Probably not without root.

Nope. However, you can install a different launcher, the Google Play Store and/or remove access to most preinstalled apps. One or all of these actions can improve the daily experience for those dissatisfied with FireOS and the suite of services provided by Amazon.
Look through the General section for threads dealing with all of the above. Some representative links:

Its possible that a root method may never be found.

At the risk of sounding absolutely ridiculous; I am aware that there is currently no root, and that there is a program to remove bloatware, ads, and switch launchers using a program on the computer. HOWEVER I do not have a computer.
At present these are the materials I have at hand-
1 Kindle 7" tablet w/ 3rd part apps activated, and ADB
1 rooted Kyocera Hydra Reach
1 Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (compatable with both devices. I tested this)
- both devices have a terminal emulator app installed.
So, my question is simple. Is there a way to do any of the following-
A: Install the drivers onto either device to run the terminal emulator from the Kindle, or smart phone to run the commands either directly into the device itself, or from the phone to the tablet?
B: run the programs with an emulation?
I am aware that this is a shot in the dark, and I have no access to a computer, or laptop currently. I am able if to obtain a laptop (albeit a cheap windows 7 laptop from ebay) if I have to. However, I would prefer not to.
Any information would be much appreciated, and thank you for your time!

install apps to sd card
I have the Fire HD 8 with 5.6 on it. I have installed the Play Store, and everything works fine with that. When I install apps from the plays store and attempt to move them to the SD card though it is only moving the apk not the obb. Is there a way to get the entire app installation to occur on the SD card with rooting? I know that there are apps that allow the movement of the obb to the card, but it seems they all require rooting. Right now I have a 128 gb of storage that the tablet seems to be refusing to actually use. Thanks in advance.

Nope - limitation of Android 5.1. Some custom ROMs incorporate adaptations that permit more (sometimes all) app components to be migrated to external storage. Amazon went a different path with FireOS v5.
I have a 7th gen Fire 7 (non-HD running 5.6.0.0) and keep getting asked by one app I'd like to use to update google play services. Problem is, when I click update in the app the Amazon App Store is hijacking the request with the options to Cancel or Continue. Cancel does just what it says and Continue just tries to take me to the Amazon app store, which of course won't work. I've attempted to disable the app store in Manage Applications (per this thread) but the option is grayed out. I found a few link handling options under settings / Amazon Application Settings / Appstore and those don't seem to help either. I also attempted to sideload a newer version of play services but couldn't determine the correct version apk to grab from apkmirror as there only appeared to be one version there for Android 5.x. Any ideas?

The Amazon app store can not be disabled on FireOS 5.6. You could roll back to an earlier build of FireOS and then disable but that's only a temporary work around that you'll likely regret as time passes.
Below is a link to the lastest stable Google Play Services build for your device. Load that and see what happens. My sense is the app is looking for another component that does not reside on your device. Hopefully that assumption is wrong.

Thanks for looking. I just checked and it appears that's the version of play services running on my device ( 11.7.46 (230-175121617 ). What's interesting is that I don't see a 230 version of the apk available. Half tempted to try the 030 version and see if that updates properly or not. That said, the application I'm having issues with is Movies Anywhere, which, after things update, will work until I attempt to download a movie from my library, at which case it gripes about play services being out of date. I think you may be on to something with a missing component, which doesn't bode well I fear.

030 (generic) and 230 (optimized for 160 DPI devices) will both work. The former contains code for multiple DPIs so is a slightly larger download. Once installed they should perform similarly. If you prefer the 230 variant jump back to the prior non-beta build. It will auto-update as needed once installed.
Movie downloads typically involve DRM which is a complex. Not sure you'll get this to work on a butchered Amazon gizmo running FireOS.

So, I think I accidentally figured it out. I updated to the beta 230. That still didn't work with Movies Anywhere so I installed Play Movies and TV (things are supposed to sync there anyway). It also wanted to update Google Play Services and actually managed to. After the update, Play Movies and TV and Movies Anywhere allow downloads.
Not entirely sure if the beta version was necessary or not, but I have another tablet to try things on and I'll report back if I've figured things out. Appreciate the help though.

Great solution; similar to installing the official YouTube app which @DragonFire1024 mentions in several posts. Thanks for sharing!
Unbox a 7th gen fire 8
I have a new 7th gen Fire 8
Have not turned it on.
I have no idea what it is running, 5.4.0.0, 5.4.1.0, 5.6.0.0
I am new to this though and I want to do it right, how do I start the tablet to give me the best chance of keeping it UN-updated.
I have read to power it off after putting in the wifi and it will stay at the lower version. AND THEN install a firewall or uninstall the OTA APK (which is a whole nother thing I will figure out down the line)

Market Enabler
People often mention that to get apps to show in the Market that are missing, they use MarketEnabler. When I do this, and fake T-Mobile, Verizon or whatever, it never shows any missing apps at all. It looks like it does nothing. I've even tried Force Stopping the Market afterwards and clearing its cache. (Yes I have root. I'm currently running CM7, but it didn't do anything on Eclair 1.0.1 either.) Am I missing something? Is there a trick to getting it to work? Is there any other way to get apps to show up? Downloading on my phone, backing it up, and transferring it is getting annoying haha.
Anyone?
have you tried "market access"? without it i could not see paid apps in the store (because of my country). now i can buy apps with no problem. still, i dont know if it will give you access to those apps hidden for you

Its not carrier restricted since you are not coming from a carrier. The problem is actually being addressed at length by the CM team in the dev threads. edit: its related to (i believe) some apps requiring an SD card and some apps requiring a security setting related to copy protection... I could be wrong on that 2nd part.

Hmm. Could you tell me, how much time it took for web market to recognise your device after rooting and adding google apps? It was more than 10 hours since I autonooted, but there are no signs of my nook in market's device list. I use autonooted 1.1.0. Thanks in advance.

I had success with market enabler, but not on cm7..nookie froyo and I did the clear cache of market force stop and google framework something or other also. Did a reboot and then first thing used market enabler to fake Tmo and then all the missing apps I had been looking for showed up right away. hit and miss is no joke though.
tried both verizon and tmoble. didnt do anything except cause my market to keep crashing. trying to reboot a couple of time to hopefully bring it back up. glad i made a back up a little while ago. guess ill search for another solution.

well it appears that my nook was registered through the marketplace properly, went to the the android market website, found the app i wanted (google maps), selected install, it lets me choose either my phone or my nook. chose nook, downloaded right away. now i have access to anything not showing in my market. not the most ideal fix. but it works for now. not like i was missing many anyways. try it out. can probably even be done from nook browser.

[Q] Question about External market links
Firstly, I'm sorry if there's been any topic with the same problem. So I'm using a Kindle Fire HD 7', rooted, google play store and external market links open just fine. But that's half a month ago, since the new firmware update (for which I had to re-root and reinstall google play) it seems that Amazon took extra caution to external market links since I can't go through the "External market links disabled ..." notification thingies now. Google store works fine, however. Thus, I'm wondering if anyone could help me with this, or confirm that is impossible (for now)? Peace out. :good:
Try your settings? Allow downloads from other sources? Just a guess
Apps with usage access? Rooted Fire 5.1.1
Root and play services all went without a hitch, but I cannot run an app that requires an additional permission normally accessed via settings>security>apps with usage access. It simply does not exist in the settings menu on the kindle. Is there any way to add the option or access the setting another way? I've attached a screenshot of the app at the point it gets stuck.
Did you ever get this working? Sorry, this isn't an answer. For some reason, posting a comment isn't working on this site in any web browser. In any case, I've got the exact situation you do (same HW/SW/root). I'm even trying to get the same app working through the google play store that you are, and am seeing the same message. Did you ever find a solution to this? Were you ever able to get MobileFence running on the Fire?
It is not available on Fire OS. Since Amazon has no use for Google play services. You would have to Install a different ROM. I would ditch Fire Os and set it up as a kids tablet under CM or SlimLP. There is a good thread on how to do it in the Fire forum.
This proves Jeff Bezos is as big a crooks as the rest of them. This stinks to high heaven!
Actually no, business model is solid even though it displeases some. Purchase a different device If you dislike Amazon's ecosystem.
This should work: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/guide-workaround-apps-access-to-usage-t3535705
I know this is an old post, but since I came across it looking for a solution, I thought I should answer for others that come across this looking for a solution... I found the answer on this thread, but here's the tl;dr version: Download App Ops, which also requires Shizuku Manager. I was trying to install AppLock which has a similar issue and this fixed it for me.
Cannot install certain apps from Google Play Store on AOSP rom
I successfully rooted and hacked my Fire 7 5th Gen tablets to an AOSP rom, following the talesofatech.com article titled "Kindle Fire 7″ 5th Gen: AOSP ROM" (sorry my account is too new to post links). There are certain apps that I cannot install -- particularly, Google Calendar and Nest. After the installation process reaches 100%, I get an error that says "Can't Install app. Try again, and if the problem continues, get help troubleshooting. (Error code: -505). Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can get around this? Thanks.

For example, I have Plex purchased through Amazon. It never updates through Google Play. Maybe I'm wrong, but I swear I've had sideloaded apps get updated, but then some don't.
After I sideloaded Calendar, it shows up in my play store as an installed item. I sideloaded Google News, Nest and GroupMe, and they both still say "Your device isn't compatible with this version", but they work perfectly fine otherwise.

For me, I don't plan on using the tablet for much of anything other than videos (Plex, Amazon Prime, Dish Anywhere), so calendar and a couple of other items is all I need and most of my apps loaded okay through the Play Store.
Problems with Kindle Books app
Hi All, I'm having some issues with my Kindle Books app, when I go into the library most of my books appear as greyed out and won't open, there seems to be no difference between books downloaded to the device and books stored in the cloud. Only two books seem to work and I think both of these were purchased after the issue first ocurred. The odd thing is that if I go via the books store and select the "read now" button, the book will open on my device. Not really sure what's going on here, any thoughts on what I an do to fix this? Running Fire OS 5.3.1 with root and ota blocked (by renaming file). Thanks, Jonny
