FAQ:
So you want to enter the competitive world of professional ROM flashing? If so, you need to take your phone flashing to a new level. How can you position yourself and your expertise so you are the dev's obvious choice? Be honest. Do you enjoy troubleshooting? Do you have a problem with things going wrong? If so, then you might be better off staying on your current OS.
If you are still reading this and are sitting in your chair thinking: “I could do that, if I tried”, then maybe you have a chance.
If you can't read, watch this video: https://youtu.be/JmvCpR45LKA
Q: I flashed an update and lost TWRP
A: If you have access to a computer, go to 1. No computer and s-off go to 2. No computer and s-on go to 3.
You need to re-flash the TWRP file via fastboot.
Go to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/2016-05-27-fastboot-flashing-firmware-t3387520
Read the instructions before flashing anything. Make sure you choose the right file.
Refer to this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72875043&postcount=2059
Q: How can I prevent the loss of TWRP when updating?
A: You need to flash root to prevent TWRP from being overwritten.
Note that this is only true for older builds as of July 2017. The problem with TWRP has been resolved as of the first official release of July 2017.
Q: I’m coming from Viper or some other stock-based ROM. What do I need to do?
A:
If you’re encrypted, you need to format (different than wipe. You have to type “yes” in TWRP) your internal storage.
This will wipe everything from your internal storage including TWRP folder with backups, titanium backup, etc. If you have anything you want to keep, move it to external storage or back it up to the computer before proceeding.
If you’re not encrypted, just do a normal wipe (system, cache, dalvik, data) and flash the ROM, gapps, and either SuperSU or Magisk for root.
Q: I want to use this ROM, but I don’t want root. Is that possible?
A: You’re in luck. This ROM does not come pre-rooted. So you can use this with no root if you desire. Although, I’m not sure why you would want to do that, but you can.
Q: My phone reboots randomly
A: Use adb or any other file explorer tool to pull a copy of /sys/fs/pstore/console-ramoops (command: adb pull /sys/fs/pstore/console-ramoops) after the reboot and post that. Try to include what you were doing when experiencing the reboot. Also refer to the next question before filing any reports.
Q: I’m having weird crashes/reboots
A: Do you have other third party software installed such as a different kernel, Magisk, sound mods, etc.? Remove all of these before submitting a bug report. Reports made with unsupported software like what is listed above will not be addressed.
Q: Will this ROM receive frequent Security Updates?
A: Yes
Q: Does this ROM pass SafetyNet?
A: It should if you don’t flash root when installing the ROM, since it doesn’t come loaded with root out of the box. If you want root, Magisk will allow you to pass SafetyNet.
Q: Does OTA work?
A: Yes
Q: Do I need to do a clean install?
A: If you’re coming from another ROM, yes. If you’re already running ours, a dirty flash should be fine unless otherwise specified. If you have problems, try a clean flash before reporting issues. Refer to an above question if you are coming from a stock-based ROM or are possibly encrypted.
Q: Will you add stuff to the ROM?
A: *insert perhaps cow meme here*
Q: Is this a Sense based ROM?
A: No
Q: Does the camera work?
A: See the OP for current stuff not working
Q: Will Stock camera work on this ROM?
A: No

Any reason for linking the May Beans Gapps instead of the June ones? Just curious.

Installed it first thing this morning running fine haven't had any major hiccups other then having to install snap camera
Found another bug. When putting fingerprint in if you don't get it first try it disables fingerprint untill you relock the screen
Installed this rom this morning and all is running well. It's very smooth and fast as advertised. I noticed a few things that are missing however, at least in my experience. These are in no offer except the first one.
1. The Speakerphone bug still exists on this build. It was fixed on the latest build of AOSP Extended. The workarounds do not appear to work either by cutting the screen on or off nor ticking the bottom on or off.
2. There is no option for weather on the lockscreen. This is not a deal breaker but nice to have.
3. There doesn't appear to be a way to remove the input selector in the status bar when you open a text field.
4. Although there's an option to use the fingerprint scanner after reboot, there's no option to unlock after pin without pressing check button.
5. The purenexus Kernel Aduitor zip will not flash in recovery. Error message reads file is not in proper zip format.
6. SELinux preset to Permissive in Dev Ops. Even when changed to Enforcing, defaults back to Permissive.
That's all I could think of at the moment. Other than that, this is a very nice build. Thanks for sharing your work OP!

I noticed a few people have asked about the weather on lockscreen... We will look into that.
as for the purenexus kernel aduitor zip, that has to do with the new twrp's update scripting and busybox.......
I will look into that as well.. but it will be helpful if you left a recovery log on that.......
As for your speaker phone that would be Maintainer on the device tree...............
Thank you for your support and reporting the problems...........

Hey hi, nice to see you here....
As you have nandroid backup, do this: Wipe everything except internal storage and then flash ROM, gapps and supersu.
It will work smoothly!

Thanks for Rom, one question how about sound quality? I've heard that it is very poorly.

First of all... Thanks buddy for bringing Nougat Custom ROM to our beloved Nexus 4... Truly loving this [emoji7]
@zaclimon brought us first ever daily driver rom & now you developer folks are adding features over it... You all are Amazing guys!!
I can see "volume rocker wake" in screen shots... I was absolutely missing this one from MM rom ..
Wants to try this ROM...But I have 125+ apps already installed so do not want start from scratch (clean) .... So can you tell me below steps will help to keep all apps (data 4.5 gb actually) & only replacing system partition will works for me....
1. Nandroid backup of existing rom (boot + system)
2. Wipe boot, system, dalvik & cache (not Data)
3. Install Nitrogen-os + gapp + super-su
4. Wipe dalvik & cache
5. Reboot
Please suggest....

@nitin.chobhe are you planing on bringing OTA on this ROM as well as on the Android 6 based one. I'm maintaining the two major of my girlfriends parents. Her dad uses Chroma ATM, and her mom Nitrogen as it comes with OTA which she's in need of, as she doesn't know to much about flashing and all that's around. Would be great as I could upgrade her phone next time I'll see her.
I install substratum and Deity theme, after install mods of Deity theme , my device no starts more, why?

Considering the number if apps you have, I would advise you to backup all your apps + app data with titanium backup, flash rom, gapps, SuperSU and restore back the apps...

halogenOS Checklist
Although no data should be lost or damaged by the flashing process,
we advise you to follow the following steps if you are coming from another rom:
Please take a full nandroid backup!
Please copy your back up to an external device.
Backing up your Internal Storage is also recommended.
When completed, please clean flash the build!
Although you usually can dirty flash halogenOS over other ROMs, considering the other
ROM has the same Android version, it is not guaranteed. In case of serious
crashes please do a clean flash.
This is a ROM that is currently in an beta state.
XOS is a new generation cutting-edge OS for Android based on Code Aurora Forum releases.
What is XOS?
halogenOS, also known as XOS is a new Android ROM which ships with the global aim to
become a modular ROM which keeps as high as potentially possible operating
performance on your mobile device while still maintaining a sufficient feature
base of nice, small and minimal features that would not be available via any
external feature base, extension, mod or plugin.
We hope you have a truly halogenified experience!
Internals of XOS
At core, the ROM is composed mainly of components from CodeAuroraForums (CAF),
featuring only extremely minor set of components from CyanogenMod (CM) which
have been added to source in order to allow for better cross-device compatibility.
Our LOVE to others
A huge thanks goes to those behind the CodeAuroraForums (CAF), the CyanogenMod
organization and all of its
contributors for the sources used in the development of the base ROM which we
started with inclusive of all the work and dedication their team puts in order to
keep us updated on the awesome contributions that they make.
We will be keen on ensuring that we be up to date with the code from our base sources,
with regular ROM updates hopefully coming from time to time.
Please do not ask for ETA's (else you shall be spooked by Mr Skeltal). Almost all of us are
students, and with the current lifestyles and routines we have, it is not that easy to acquire
time to develop the ROM, though we'll be sure to keep you updated and release OTAs as
soon as they are available and ready for publication. If you want to be really updated quick,
then join us on Telegram: http://telegram.me/halogenos
Visit our website for features such as: Downloads, Information etc.

(Not finished yet)
Common stuff
Known issues:
No backlight for hardware keys
Please use Footej camera for video recording (4K supported) or Google Camera (1080p).
Navbar section in SystemUI Tuner crashes
Known issues are going to be fixed as soon as possible. We don't have infinite time.
Planned features (don't ask for these!):
Lockscreen Visualizer (This time we are going to make it ourselves. Since on CM-based ROMs the lockscreen visualizer causes the infamous QuickSettings Bug, we are making a new implementation)
Navigation bar & Hardware Keys toggles
Heads-Up toggle
Hardware buttons backlight
And more stuff I don't remember now
Highlights :
Substratum
Full media support (FFMPEG, video codecs, ...)
Great Audio quality, no distortions, no crap
Optimized many portions of the system including surfaceflinger, inputflinger, System Server, and more
Super fast boot
Superuser-capable
Great battery life
Soundmod support (not all soundmods work on Nougat, it's not our fault)
addon.d support (backups your gapps etc. when flashing new build - don't wipe system before flashing!)
init.d support
BusyBox
Disabled Access Time for all partitions (We don't need access time. When access time is enabled, it will store the exact date of the access when a file is accessed, what just wastes write cycles (in theory) and has impact in I/O performance.)
Super smooth
Signature Spoofing toggle (Support for MicroG)
Support for trusted third-party WebViews like Chrome
Long press on home for assist toggle
Security Patches in kernel
OpenGapps (Mini/Micro/Nano recommended) and Banks GApps support
Full KeyHandler & KeyDisabler support
Dexpreopt for faster (first) boot time and less space consumption on data partition
Upgrade & Boot the ROM in just 5 minutes - no more endless waiting for flashing a new build
Very high compatibility with other ROMs
Warning: You should not use SuperSU by Chainfire, as that breaks sensors on Nougat ROMs for Redmi Note 3 .
Instead, please flash this zip and install the phh's superuser app from Play Store: Phh's Superuser
How to update the ROM:
Download the latest zip
Reboot into TWRP (Please use official TWRP)
Do not wipe anything
Flash the ROM
Reboot
You don't need to wipe Cache/Dalvik.
You don't need to flash gapps again. There is some magic going on which keeps your GApps. Just make sure that you don't wipe system before flashing.
You don't need more than 5 minutes.
Supported Kernels
Stock kernel. (Great battery - Performance ratio) (recommended)
You can actually flash any custom kernel on this rom.
CM kernels are usually supported, especially those that are delivered as an
AnyKernel package.

CarbonROM is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. We are dedicated to fast, stable, and feature-filled roms, honesty and communication with our users, and openness with our code. We like frequent builds, with the very latest and greatest hardware support and fixes. We strive to not only provide you with the best rom we can build, but also to give back to the Android community and our fellow developers. For us, this is about creating something we can be proud of and hope you will enjoy.
Please feel free to look, build, and use our code at CarbonROM's GitHub... and at CarbonROM Gerrit.
Disclaimer:
While we make every effort to test these builds as much as possible, we are not responsible for anything that may happen to your device, family, pets, or perception of reality. We ask that you do your part to know your device and know how to recover from problems before you flash!
Support:
We spend an astonishing amount of time developing this software. We can't spend much time on XDA as a result, so if you need support, please try the following:
1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our website. Carbon FAQ
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Join our Discord server! There, you can connect with other Carbon users and our developers, and you can get quicker responses to your bug reports. The invite link is right below.
We recommend MindTheGApps. OpenGApps should work, but please make sure you clearly mention the gapps you're using when reporting bugs.
Notice:
For this ROM to work you need to use the latest ODM Images. If you need additional guidance on how to do that, please refer to Sonys Guide on how to flash an ODM Image.

No one tried this rom yet? I have a problem over here. It keeps asking for password after the CarbonROM logo even though I wipe everything clear, any ideas? What I was doing was flash 41.3.A.2.99 with everything wiped, flash ODM, flash TWRP, flash the rom and then Pico OpenGapps. Something wrong with my procedure? Thanks in advance.
EDIT1 : Oh yeah, forgot to mention my device is F8332, it isn't supported?

Use the "format data" option in TWRP to get rid of encryption, wipe doesn't clear encryption. If coming from stock, thats necessary unfortunately due to differences in the encryption used. Otherwise (if coming from AOSP) the password its asking for would be the one you used before.
Dual sim support?

No it isn't. At least out of the box. You can find a patch on Sony AOSP Build thread.
Volte Supported??
First of all, thanks alot @Myself5 and all other devs, who are working hard to bring this to our XZ :good:
My experiences after 1 day:
- rom is very smooth and snappy.
- root via Magisk v16 & Xposed 90.1-beta3 (systemless) works flawlessly
- the fp sensor always works, but it's not as sensitive as with stock
- night light worked - until I've installed Substratum and a Substratum theme, but after that it doesn't work anymore (even after deactivating, uninstalling the theme, a system restart and deinstalling the Substratum app it sill doesn't work). Also a dirty flash of the rom.zip didn't help to get it working again.
- the build-in camera takes acceptable pics (not as well as the stock camera, but acceptable); also focussing is a little slower than stock. Another thing is, it's not possible to chance the location to save the pics to the ext. sdcard.
- formatted as a portable storage, the ext. sdcard item on the left of the status bar can't be removed (see attachement)
- the battery consumption is a bit high (from 100 % to 98 % in 1 h - without doing anything)
But in the whole, it's really promising for th 1st official build :good::good::good:

Hello, is the battery life when used good ? As good as stock ?
And does it have that bug when if you record video the result will be green ?
Can you upload screen recording of rom from home to settings and other functions.
I plan on flashing this soon, but I figured I'd tell you, your link to the Carbon FAQ is broken.

The battery consumption while in use is ok. But my device doesn't go into deepsleep while the screen is off. So I had lost about 23 % in 10 hrs - leaving the device untouched!
Video recording works; I haven't noticed that bug.

Sorry, I went back to stock for now, as there's a new stock fw (41.3.A.2.107).
I have a few bugs to report. First, the fingerprint sensor is extremely slow, about half or even one third of the speed compared to stock. Second, could you guys please fix the deepsleep? That one is not working for now. And third, Night Light does not work at all...
Thank you for updating the XZ to Android 8.1 I am glad to see carbon rom on this device although it is not that stable for now.
Really nice ROM and I'm looking forward to make this my daily driver, I tried it for two days and these are the bugs I found:
1: GPU performance is really bad with 2d games and google maps lagging all the time when they never do on stock
2: CPU performance is inferior compared to stock, especially single threaded
3: enabling 120 hz display won't do anything and the settings or UI will crash when leaving the page
4: fingerprint seems to be sometimes less responsive, usable but can be improved
Camera is not so bad and the modded google camera works well, hopefully this will become the first proper AOSP based platform for this device that has only seen failures until now, keep up the good work.
Can I dirty flash this rom for just update?
I use Carbon Rom 3/31 version, but I can't use delta update because my device cannot receive the stock script.
I must change the rom script with Notepad+.
So...can I use dirty flash or....could you manage it?
Thanks for continously updating this rom and thank you for fixing the bug with the fingerprint sensor.
I'm not sure if deepsleep has been fixed but there is a big problem with playing music. I can't even play any music track at all...
Hello, looking forward to make this my daily driver, is it possible ?
What I would want is decent battery life and camera.
Hello. I tried to listen to music after installing the ROM, but the earphones are disconnected as soon as they are connected to the smartphone.
The earbuds pfe 132 and are made up of earphones with an iphone microphone.

Clean flashed the 10th build along with Rytekk's dual-SIM patch, Pico Open GApps and Magisk 16.3 to my F8332 and other than that annoying SD notification (which can be banished to the notification drawer by making System UI notifications low priority) and Night Light not working, the only other major issue raised ITT of the CPUs not entering Deep Sleep is fixed according to Adiutor.
Great stuff. I haven't been able to standardise on one ROM since the CM days (interesting side note, it looks like you built the kernel for the NOCT build on my Z2 tablet).
I recommend this to anyone for daily use. Also, lower your expectations to realistic levels guise. I remember when XDA threads were for flagging major broken functionality, not complaining that a few amateur enthusiasts weren't putting out work that competed on every indicator against the finished product of a multibillion-dollar for-profit international conglomerate.

Installation procedure:
Have an unlocked bootloader (Not gonna be explained here, there'll be threads in this forum somewhere)
Make sure to backup internal storage as wiping data will delete everything.
Reboot to fastboot and flash the provided boot.img with the following commands:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot /path/to/boot.img
reboot into recovery and select "Apply update from ADB":
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
adb sideload /path/to/rom.zip
In recovery before rebooting, make sure to factory reset/wipe data.
Reboot into the system, and enjoy the illusion!
Update procedure:
Just use the built in updater. Easy peasy.
Updating with Magisk:
Update using the built in updater same as you would without magisk, but when it prompts you to reboot, open magisk manager, tap install for the magisk option > then select "install to inactive slot" > then proceed as you normally would and reboot once it's done.
KNOWN ISSUES:
Currently none, let me know what you find!
Reporting Bugs
DO NOT Report bugs if you're running a custom kernel or you installed Xposed

Include your firmware versions in reports.
Mention any and all Magisk modules you might be using along with the Magisk version
If it is a random reboot, grab dmesg . (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
If the problem disappears after running "setenforce 0" from a root shell, grab /data/misc/audit/audit.log

Nice! Some new roms showing up! Thanks for your hard work! Is there any links to screen shots or features lists?
Flashed it about an hour ago.... dang.. it is fast! This rom feels really smooth! I use Visible service and it works great on this rom too. I have LTE + (volte). It honestly feels faster then any other custom rom I have tried and faster then stock for sure. And this isn't just because of animation speeds or what not; I always set mine to x0.5. It just is faster and smoother.
Nice job!

Thanks for maintaining it for both Bonito and Sargo

Using adb reboot fastboot didn't work for me.
This is what worked for me for anyone having problems:
After flashing February's stock firmware to both slots, without actually starting the system afterwards, I immediately booted into fastboot by Volume Down + Power.
On the bootloader screen(fastboot not fastbootd) is when i entered fastboot flash boot /path/boot.img.
Next step I did was reboot back into fastboot, and then entered recovery by volume down/enter.
Entering "Apply update from ADB", I then sideloaded AOSiP-10-Alpha-bonito-20200204.zip. (AOSiP-10-Alpha-beryllium-20200204.zip wouldn't flash no matter what process I did)
Rebooted system and everything loaded fast! (When certain processes failed I would get stuck at the boot animation.)
Anyways, its snappy and haven't ran into any bugs.
Great work and i love the boot animation!

As for your beryllium troubles that's because that's another device (Poco F1 to be exact).

Looks incredibly promising! Have been using HavocOS but the kernel it's built with causes issues with ElementalX, and it has several issues such as freezing my music players and crashing my Netflix randomly, causing a total reboot - has this ROM been noted to have either of these issues? I'd prefer to wait until after it's at least in Beta, but if it has less issues than this ROM I'll definitely do a factory reset just to install it!

There isn't any notification vibration customisation. What I generally do is disable the "noisy notifications if screen on" option in OwlsNest > notifications and I also disable heads up notifications via the quicksettings tile. It's not exactly the same thing you want but it works for me.

That unfortunately does not answer anything.. the issues I have with stebo's HavocOS are that media players freeze up after a certain amount of songs are played, causing me to have to force stop it, and that attempting to use Netflix caused a COMPLETE freeze of the OS, whereupon a buzzing sound is heard through the speakers and the phone forces ITSELF to reboot.
Also of importance is ElementalX compatibility, as HavocOS has issues with it - it flashes and applies settings fine, but it completely disables Wi-Fi functionality, in that not even the settings page for it will load.
Regardless of whether or not you know whether or not these issues are prevalent in your own ROM, or how you answer, I'm going to be giving it a try as his January 9th HavocOS release has completely broken my SIM cards' APN, brought Chrome back onto my phone with no way to uninstall it, and made it so the recent apps view loads the Pixel Launcher. I'm sure I won't be disappointed, seeing as you seem much more capable.

What? No, firmware, like modem, bootloader, etc.
Question:
If you don't follow these instructions, or use 3rd party add-ons (like Magisk) please don't expect support here.
So are you saying if we root there is no support? As most of us coming from stock would at least need root temporarily to restore all our apps.
Can anyone confirm if root even works on this build. I woudnt see any reason not but would like to know cause of the above reason.
UPDATE: Decided to just go for it and everything is working great so far. Took a little work to get google apps working instead of the included aosp ones (phone calendar and contacts) and a bt more work to get it to pass safteynet but its all working 100% now. Also tested this build with both ex kernel and mvk and they both seem to work just fine as well. Will report back if anything changes as have only been running it.a few hours but so far no issues or complaints at all.
Great job LOS team
What is the official way to obtain root access? or is there one any more?

Based on the above statement i quoted sounds like root is not "officially" supported at all. That said to get root i followed the process by which you patch a boot image file with magisk manager. Making it pass safteynet net took additional steps.
If you need more details on either process just post back and i can be more detailed

Yes please - maybe message me off thread, as this topic might not be appropriate on here.
I have Magisk app installed, due to using Titanium Backup to keep a backup of my app. The upgrade went great and everything is working fine under LOS 18.1. But I miss the ability to take backups and use certain features properly on the device (ie clipboard sharing and other features in KDE Connect, scheduling backups etc) There used to be a package provided by LOS to add or remove su - https://download.lineageos.org/extras but that seems to have stopped now. I was just wondering if there was an "official" way of doing it!
I actually held off upgrading due to the previous download being released on 1st April and not finding some previous April fools pranks to be very funny!!

i flashed the version of Magisk (v21.4) via the LineageOS recovery using the adb sideload and just updated to v22 via the app. I haven't had any issues with root since installing.
First off, I want to say thank you for all the hard work on these builds.
I have came across one issue that isn't working for me, but might not be something everyone else uses a lot. My "squeeze" for Assistant isn't working, but I can change it to take a screenshot of any other option, except the Assistant. Am I doing something wrong or is there another settings need to activate for it to work?
Thanks!
Really want to try this, but can't "fastboot boot twrp.img" or "fastboot flash boot twrp.img" in Android 11 to backup my partitions. What's the point of Android OS if I can't backup my system? I can boot into Lineage OS Recovery, enable adb, figure out the partition names, dd the partitions from shell or pull with adb? But good grief, kinda ridiculous if you ask me.
Haven't been able to use twrp since Android 9 far as i know
lineage-18.1-20210401-nightly-bonito-signed.zip
Searching Settings aborts after a matter of seconds and while typing.
Derelict non-clearable notifications requiring reboot or force close.
Desk Clock stuck at "Loading".
The final LOS 17 seems more polished, but lingering notifications are still present requiring force close.
Nevermind, user error.

you're using opengapps - don't do that ;p
Use MindTheGapps, which doesn't break that feature.

Actually, it's the first time I've used MindTheGapps. I used OpenGapps after falling back to 17.1 though since it is recommended on the LOS site. I kind of liked the Slim Gapps feel of MTG though, and might try it on 17.1

weird - we don't have MTG builds for 17.1 though, sadly.
How do I disable encrypted device? Tried ElemntalX kernel and Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_quota.zip but phone is still encrypted under security settings after first boot.
When I see "Say Hello To Trust", I just want to punch it in the face. Somebody just needs to build an updated LOS 16 so we have TWRP and possible access to /data (formerly user space) and call it a day.

Why do you want encryption disabled?
It's hardware backed, and FBE, so very little gain from running unencrypted...
"Trust" has nothing to do with encryption, it can be on, off, trust just reports it to the user.
Why do you want TWRP? Lineage Recovery does the job just fine. What do you mean "/data (formerly userspace)"? That statement doesn't make much sense.
Regardless of all the above, the disabel force encrypt zip, followed by `fastboot -w` to format userdata ought to do it - but be warned, if you set a PIN, Android (AOSP, not a lineage thing specifically) will re-encrypt you... hence there being no point.
