No encryption option? - Honor 5C Questions & Answers

Hey! I have NEM-L21 and running the stock ROM with EMUI 5.0. Normally the option to encrypt would be under Security, which was on Advanced settings on EMUI, but there was no option for encryption?
Thank you for paying attention on reading this post.

are you using the PIN/Password etc? If not, try with that and then see for option

I was also wondering about this at some point, but I believe EMUI devices are encrypted by default. Not sure about this though.

I tried removing it, still no option for encryption under Security settings. The problem is that i would need encryption, to make the device more secure. TWRP does not asl for encryption password on startup, so im not sure if it is encrypted or not.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but since it's a related question I hope it's ok; does this phone come with encryption activated out of the box? Since it's with Android 6 and from 2016 I would have guessed so, but I can't find any information that confirms this.

Seems to me highly inlikely, because usually when device is encrypted it asks for a password before the system is booted.

same problem here, no crypting in settings...

A bit late to the party, but I found the hidden setting. However, you need Nova Launcher or any kind of activity launcher to enable it.
Long press on the home screen and select "Widgets" . Under Nova Launcher's section, chose "Activities" and then "Settings". You'll find the option to encrypt your phone in the list.
Worked for me at least, using L51C432 variant on EMUI 5.
Funny thing, I also found the fingerprint menu in that list even though there is no fingerprint sensor on L51C432.

on NEM-L21 when selected nova shuts down. also tried more "official" way without using launcher, used app called hidden settings/activities and it just flashed fast settings akd then closes? malwarebytes app says "storage encrypted"

Auto-rotate issues

Hi all, hoping to find a solution to an issue I've been having with a new N6. The Auto-rotate feature is refusing to activate when I put the phone on its side. Apps which force landscape mode (eg Netflix) can still function normally, its just rotating when the phone is sideways that doesn't work.
Things I have tried:
reboot
un-check and then re-check autorotate in the swipe down quick access menu
un-check and then re-check "landscape mode on rotate" in settings > display.
verify accelerometer is working ("check my android" and "accelerometer monitor" both show active readings on all three axes)
None of the above have worked. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? All the threads I found by searching the forums were fixed by checking the accelerometer with the above-mentioned apps.
Device info:
Nexus 6, rooted and unlocked, running stock android 5.1 ROM over the latest leankernel.
go into your main settings, accessibility, now enable it. now you can use the iption in the pulldown as well.

Not sure what you are talking about. Home screen does not rotate . That is a hack. If apps not rotating then have a problem. I run stock rooted with LeanKernel and rotation works as it should.

That is beside the point. We talking a one poster here. LMAO
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I mean that the Auto-rotate feature is not working in any scenario when I turn the phone over, for example in chrome or on YouTube or any other applicable. The only way I am able to enable landscape mode is to use an all which forces landscape mode (eg Netflix), but this does not fix the Auto-rotate even temporarily, and switching to an app like YouTube afterwards resumes the issue.

If the apps showing sensors work only option is to reflash the device. Then if don't work the apps were wrong and need to RMA.

Fastboot flash the images separately. Don't flash the userdata.img. Will keep your data. If have Google restore enabled it now restores most everything if you do wipe data. Can use TIBU but have to move the backup to PC if you wipe data as you will lose it. Can actually make a zip file with TIBU to backup that also requires root and a custom recovery such as TWRP. Sucks with no external sd. Lol

Sorry to be a bore but I'm not 100% clear on what you mean by "fastboot flash the images separately". I didn't think it was possible to, for example, flash a fresh copy of a ROM or kernel without deleting data. Are you advising me to flash something else?
Apologies if its a silly question - I'm still relatively new to the game.
Managed to work out what the above poster meant, and reflashed the bootloader, radio, boot and system images successfully. Unfortunately my phone still refuses to autorotate is there anything else I can try or is it time to get a replacement?

MM 6.0.1: "Screen Overlay" - Pulling My Hair Out!!!

Hi,
I am having a major issue with Marshmallow 6.0.1 on my Rooted N910T and it's driving me nuts! I'm totally new to MM and I have no idea how to handle this, or if it even can be handled.
This is a new phone for me, that was fresh and I updated to MM using Samsung's ROM, Rooted it and have PhilZ Recoveey on it.
After I install apps that need access to my Storage (or some other things), like for example "OfficeSuite Pro", which needs access to my Storage, a message pops up when I open the app, telling me it needs that access. So I tap "Allow".
Then another message comes up that says; "Screen Overlay Detected" and it tells me that I have to turn it Off. So I tap "Open Settings".
Then it takes me to a list of apps that each have an On/Off switch and it says; "Apps that can appear on top" at the top of that screen.. And sometimes I can move the switch, sometimes I can't. But whether it's already in the right position, or I can move it there (and I've tried both settings) makes no difference.
I.e., it still does the same thing when I go into the apps and so in this example, I still can't access my documents.
May I please humbly request, does anyone have any idea what's going on here and how to hopefully fix it? I would be so amazingly grateful!!!
Thank You!

If you have a screen color changing app like Twilight or F.lux running, pause it and run whatever you want without overlay bother. When you're done with your app, resume your color changing app.

If you have root+xposed installed you can grab ( disable screen overlay warning ) module and activate it. You can get rid of it permanently.

Q's lots of: Oreo can't figure out, find stuff, or how to do stuff. Ongoing.

N6 Oreo 8.1 [AOSiP-8.1-Official-shamu-20180617] TWRP & open_gapps-arm-8.1-micro-20180623.
Can't find Google icon in app drawer. How do I get the Google icon in app drawer?
How can I enable Double Tap to Wake?
I have other questions but I've been tweaking hard on rooting this, exploring & trying to figure N6 (new to me) & Oreo.
So I'll add other questions.
Almost all my progress so far due to ktmom, & Strephon Alkhalikoi. Starting here:

Done a lot of searching, figuring & fixing on my own as well.
"Can't find Google icon in app drawer. How do I get the Google icon in app drawer?"
Use a different OpenGApps package.
"How can I enable Double Tap to Wake?"
Search for a mod to enable it. I'm not familiar with the ROM you're using - I use Nitrogen - so I don't know if there is a setting for it built in to the ROM.
Most kernel apps such as ka mod, or ex manager will enable what your looking for. Being you are running aosip its cooked with ex kernel which has double tap to wake. As far as Google...maybe try different gapps.
Let me also suggest that you read through the thread where the ROM was downloaded as there is always gems hidden away.
And I kinda suggest that using the stock open Gapps package with a config file to prevent the install of unwanted apps help you ensure all of the frameworks you need are installed.
You can create the config file as outlined in the open Gapps wiki I linked to in the other thread and then reboot to recovery and flash the new Gapps setup. The install script will remove the old packages and install the new ones based on any config file available.

Well I kinda solved the missing Google icon in app drawer. I'm using the evie launcher.
I searched the other thread for key words knock & double. No soap.

Would I lose my non-Gapp apps?
I have searched, searched & continue to search for the double tap to wake solution. In case I'll add I'm using a locking pattern for security. On my LG G Flex that didn't affect Knock On.

No, as long as the data partition is not getting wiped, you won't lose play store apps. And there's no reason to wipe any partition for this exercise. The ones you flash in recovery go to system.

I imagine I will take your suggestion to flash stock open Gapps & write a create the config file as outlined in the open Gapps wiki. Not quite yet. I want to transfer my pdf, epub, photos, vids, get shortcuts sorted & just get used to my N6 before that.

So I'd have to flash the specific kernel? Anybody got this licked with a specific kernel please let me know.
How do I turn off cellular data? I don't see a data icon in the notification bar. There is a wifi icon but whenever I turn off wifi cellular data starts up. I don't want that.
Do I need Titanium Backup to disable system apps? For instance I don't like the default file manager. Or is this an instance for reflashing open Gapps editing out the File manger in the config file?
What is the best way to disable ads systemwide? I'm using Blockada. Or is Adaway, Ablock or something else the way to go?

The AOSiP room comes with Elemental Ex kernel. Look at settings -> System -> About phone. I don't bother but I believe you can just install the Ex kernel app to manage settings. You'll need to read an Ex kernel thread.

I have no idea. Maybe it's not optimized for Oreo, maybe another app or mod is conflicting, maybe battery optimization needs to be turned off.

I have a replacement File Manager (OSS). So I'd like to disable (disappear it from app drawer) or uninstall it.
Thanks for notification dragging tip. As far as ad blocker using Netguard from XDA through F-Droid. Had a scare optimized everything for battery usage. Stuck at Google screen. Held power button till off, turned on undid what I did OK so far.
OH btw I have sort of double/triple tap to wake thing working. Doesn't always work. And it's always proceed by picking up or turning over the phone & the ROMs crossing swords clock popping up 1st. Then I tap away & get to the lockscreen. Not sure what I did.
What happens if I do a Factory Reset? I know all data gets wiped. But does it stay Rooted, on the Same ROM with the same open GAPPS? And if I do a Nandroid & restore it is it Exactly the same?

Try installing EX Kernel Manager and going to Gestures and enabling Double Tap2Wake. If support for DT2W is built into your current Kernel as previously mentioned then that should enable it.
I think I have DT2W sussed. If lay down the N6 on it's front & then turn it over DT2W works perfectly.

Battery optimization is the same as "doze". It's a feature to help reduce the drain apps can make on the battery. The only apps I manually have set to not optimized are Tasker, k9 mail, Termux (because it has some long scripts that run overnight) and Auto tools plug-in to Tasker.
If you factory reset, only data, cache and dalvik are wiped. This is true whether the wipe is done through the ROM in settings, or using the default factory reset through TWRP. Any apps installed to system (e.g. the open gapps you flashed with the ROM) will still be available. Root, because it's installed into the boot partition, will still be available. But the root app (e.g. Magisk manager) will need to be reinstalled after boot. All user apps, which are installed into the data partition will be wiped as well as updates to the apps on system that were downloaded from the play store.

The DT2W is tied to the gesture "lift to check" (settings->display->advanced->ambient display). I *think* this association is required because of changes in the Google code that prevent apps from doing (certain) things with the display off.

How do I assign Speed Dial #s?
When I long press a # I don't even get "no number has been assigned to this speed dial".

You don't. That is what Favorites are for, as they are more efficient than speed dial. In fact, the dialer has never had speed dial. The only long press button is the number 1, and that is set for your voicemail.

I was afraid of that.
Why not offer both? Grrr frusty Speed Dial is easier for me. I don't want to look at Favorites. I want to open the Dialer & long press a number.
For instance in Speed Dial I'd assign 3-5 #s for personal contacts & 3 #s that are shtf #s.
I don't want to even think of the shtf #s let alone look at them in a Favorites page.
But when the shtf I just want to long press a #.

Because speed dial is woefully inefficient and unnecessary on a smartphone. Dumbphones need it because they lack a quick method of dialing a desired number. With a smartphone, you have your most frequently dialed numbers on the Favorites page, with no need to remember which number a particular contact is located at. A tap on their picture and you've dialed them, and more quickly than with a long press of a digit.

I find Speed Dial necessary.
I don't want to look at shtf #s on a Favorites page while calling my happy, happy, joy, joy friends & family.

Is there any way to lock apps in memory on miui 12.0.9?

Hi, I'm on stock 12.0.9.0 (QJOEUXM - global EU channel)
This update redacted the facility to lock apps in memory and select Split Screen from the Recents menu (apparently it was unstable for some users - it's to come back in a later update)
So, as it stands when you long press an app in the Recents menu, instead of being offered Split Screen, Lock, Info, it just takes you directly to App Info
Until it's fixed, does anyone know of another way to lock apps in memory?
It's getting very annoying having miui kill processes all the time
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Very definitely, yes! I'd been scouring the settings menus to find this feature again but couldn't find anything relevant
This morning the miui Security app opened up and offered me the chance to Lock Apps in memory, meaning I could select the relevant apps which are now shutting down less often
Unfortunately I can't find any way to find this menu again! Miui settings menus are a maze!
And the answer is:
Security app » Settings cog » Boost speed » Lock apps
Thanks to u/sparklesunshine777 on Reddit for that

Hi. so this means apps that are locked don't get killed all the time? There is a lock function in the settings but that just prevents apps from staring without a finger print or pin I believe.
I found an option in CustoMIUizer to stop MIUI force closing selected apps. (but that needs root.) and it seems to help so far the app (RL Bubble) stopped only 1 time today instead of every hour or so but that is still 1 time too many.
So I added it in the security app too. Who would think to look there in stead of the settings. Great find! Thanks.
I think that they make the phones more and more complicated by hiding/relocating/renaming the settings every android version.
Hi, a quick question. I do lock apps in the background, but i notice sometimes the padlock is lets say highlighted and sometimes just dim.
Anybody knows what that is?
Thank you.

Jesus, finally. Thank you man
I have an issue related to this in stock miui with netguard vpn - basically its still killed once in while even though:
Its already locked as described above including autostart;
its already set in stock android system settings for battery use as "not optimized"
its also set with the miui app settings battery saver as (no restrictions)
it's set under network settings as (always on);
So what else can I do non-root to prevent this happening?

Super annoying stuff. especially when you want to multitask, the last resort if not buying a different brand phone is to install a custom ROM, and get rid of MIUI altogether. Imo, even tho battery is not as good is a good sacrifice for sanity.

Question Hide app feature not working

hi, I'm trying to enable the "hide app" of ColorOS 11 on my Oppo Find X3 Pro (global).
I can correctly select apps to hide, set up the access code (for example #1234#), but after that the apps are still visible on drawer and homeage. And if I digit the access code on the launcher, nothing happens. I suspect the features is not working because I have google dialer and not the oppo one so maybe the feature to manage the access code is not implemented there.
Do you have any clue on how to fix this? or does the "hide app" works in your phone?
This moment...when you are trying to hide Tinder from your GF ◉‿◉
Just kidding ofc xD
On my phone it works flawlessly - i have an oppo dialer.

Hi. Did your phone come with oppo dialer?
actually it was my fault... I forgot the golden rule of IT
Just rebooting the phone (I didn't reboot after activating the hide app feature, but it was not specified in the instructions) made the hide app feature work.
The only minor glitch is that on google dialer, after I enter the access code #xyz# and the hidden app menu opens, next time I open the dialer it still has the access code visibile and I have to manually delete it.

Reboot in my case was not neccessary...but turn off/turn on is first golden action in IT ᕙ( • ‿ • )ᕗ
actually this problem is not solved. After each reboot it works flawlessy, but after some time (maybe 1/2 day; I don't know exactly) it stops working. When I enter the access code on dialer, nothing happens, until next reboot. I suspect the issue is related to ColorOS policy to kill/suspend apps (maybe the one that manage hidden apps is suspended), but didn't found any way to fix this issue. Do you have any clue?

Sorry to hear that.
I suggest removing google dialer temporarily to check whether it is an issue with the firmware or google dialer.
After that let us know.
Btw. Have u installed google dialer during phone initial setup or after?
As a workaround I suggest using external app to hide applications - they worked great for me before. Just use google play store and search for "Hide App"

actually google dialer is the default one from factory, I don't have oppo dialer (and I don't think I can even install it being a system app). From what I understood, the fact that some unit have oppo dialer and others (like mine) google dialer depends on the region. My unit is an european one (italian).
I will try external app, thanks for your suggestion.

So I finally got the update for ColorOS 11 on my Oppo Find X2 Pro yesterday and so far I like it. However, there is no way to auto-hide the navigation buttons.
I've tried navigation gestures but just cannot get used to them (I will try again some time I promise), so I'm back to my trusty navigation buttons. However, unlike ColorOS 7,i cannot find the option to automatically hide (or press a button to hide) these when in apps, etc. so I now can't have a full screen experience.
Has anyone found how to do this yet?

This is X3 Pro forum. Not X2 Pro.
hide apps milestoneapply :
Long-tap on any empty space on your home screen.
In the bottom right corner, tap the button for home screen settings.
Scroll down on that menu and tap "Hide apps."
In the menu that pops up, select any apps you want to hide, then tap "Apply."
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, our R&D Team has already started working on it to get this issue fixed. Rest, please be assured this issue will get resolved in next software update.
However, until then, you may also try alternative way for accessing the hidden apps by following below steps:
1. Device Settings > Fingerprint > Fingerprint for hidden apps quick-start
2. Select any registered finger (best option to use rarely used finger to unlock the device so that it won't open every time)
We thank you for patience and understanding.
