Hello guys,
Yesterday I decided to root my Moto x play.
I unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP without any problems.
Then, after installing SuperSU, I get the "warning bootloader unlocked" screen all the time, when I try to reboot normally into Android.
I first tried SuperSU v2.65. Then I tried SuperSU v2.46.
How should I proceed to correct this?
Did you try SuperSU 2.79?!
Sent from my LS-5015 using Tapatalk
Actually, I did so because I want to install a custom ROM.
Should I ignore this step (rooting) and jump to ROM flash already, since I got TWRP working?
Yes you can do that..
Read the flash instructions carefully, before you proceed.

I just tried, still the same screen, since 10 minutes ago.
I don't think it takes 30 minutes to boot into Android after installing SuperSU, does it?
What am I missing here??
Well, I finish by flashing a new ROM, without rooting my device.
Thanks anyway.

I hope its a simple mistake on my end of being blind, but i have not been able to locate ( if possible ) a way to root 4.2.2 with already running wpnomoto. I was hoping i could do that and get back on SS and run a ROM. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I was on 4.4 and went back to 4.2.2.....or am i out of luck and have to just settle for rooted stock 4.4?
With me being impatient i ended up going back to 4.4 I know that safestrap does not "work" on 4.4, BUT I was able to install it and flash the eclipse ROM on the stock slot! Booted up and seems to be running like a champ! Id still like to find out in regards to the OP though.

You can not flash the 4.4 ota with any form of custom recovery or root , it will bootloop as you found out. So to stop the bootloops you need to delete the ota in the cache folder. What method did you use to root?

Matt, I guess that was what you did:
1. You had a root 4.4.
2. You run MotoWpNoMo to turn off WP permenently (yes, it is permenent).
3. You flashed the unit back to 4.2.2 for a reason (but you should lost the root) .
4. With 4.2.2 and WP off, you wished you can run RockMyMoto to gain the root again (in 4.2.2).
5. But you found that RockMyMoto stopped at the Step 1 since the WP is off or "0". No more Step 2 and 3. So basically, you wasn't able to re-gain the root.
6. So you decided to reflash the unit back to 4.4.
7. Then you installed again the Safestrape.
8. And you found that SS was still working.
But, after you lost your root, how did you make the SS to work? Very interesting!

Update. SS is sketchy. I tried to use it and its rough around the edges. I think I flashed my phone via RSD today around 6 times..... I ended up back on rooted 4.4
I though I read somewhere that someone had altered the program so it'll root 4.2.2.......
FYI I was able to obtain root on just 4.2.2 using slapmymoto and NOT taking the OTA. I did every step and I was able to install super su and get root access.
That means I have tried SS ON 4.2.2 AND 4.4 I got the same result on both stock Roms. The only thing I tried to flash was ECLIPSE ROM. Maybe that ROM was what was being finiky and NOT SS......MAKE SENSE?

Matt, thanks for your quick response. I found that I wasn't able to gain the root for a WP-Off unit with 4.2.2 by the "old" SlapMyMoto. jcase released a new version that works perfectly for a WP-Off unit. Thanks, jcase!
Some games I wanted to play doesn't support 4.4 so I flashed back to Camera update 4.2.2 and tried again games worked. So, I decided to stay on 4.2.2.
I tried rockmymoto again and I get is system is not write protected... executing step 3... nothing happens
toolkit even doesn't work. Any methods to root only 4.2.2? at&t user here...
Thanks in advance!
I believe since you disabled write protection you need to root using slapmymoto 4.4

Root in 3 mins or less
Easy..... Just install recovery twrp 2.6.3.1, it works with 4.2.2 and 4.4. This recovery will ask u if u want to root/install superSU.
Then...when the moto x starts goto playtore and update/install superSU.

I think you missed where LeonKnight12 says " at&t user here." so can't install TWRP since ATT can't unlock bootloader, unless I missed something.

You are right, I never realized slapmymot 4.4 can be used on 4.2.2 to root. I wasted many hours to find solution. I'm glad I rooted 4.2.2 and staying there.
Hi. Sorry to bother - didnt find an answere. I have Moto X from ATT ( Android 4.2.2). It was rooted by seller - so I recieved it as it is. Now I want to install 4.4, but at first I need it back to factory. I've tried to wipe it from menu - nothing. Its reboot and nothing happends. Ive tried to do it from recovery - it's just rebooting and its it. Help please

It has probably been rooted using an exploit. Be VERY careful or you could lose root forever.
Is the bootloader unlocked? Let me know and I may be able to help you with clear and precise steps.

If you erase..are you aware that you will loose Root permanently.?
BUT..If you use the (jcase) RockMyMoto & SlapMyMoto, you can retain Root with these two exploits, Since your device is still on Jelly Bean OS..BUT..to do so, one must be experienced with adb & RSDLite..and you can retain Root over into 4.4_

Root for this phone is not that important. Im tired that every time I want update a program or install a new one I need to delete google profile from the phone, reboot it and again use google profile. Otherwise nothing is installing.

If root isn't important to you......BY FAR, the easiest solution is to follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread - in general subforum, and flash the entire 4.4.2 SBF to your phone. Everything you need is in that thread, including links to drivers, tools, and the SBF files themselves.
Just keep in mind - you'll permanently lose root/wp-off. You can still use the temp-root methods, for now...but once you update to 4.4.4 (it will be pushed out to everyone SOON), you will have ZERO chance at rooting (unless a new exploit comes along, which is extremely unlikely, OR you get your bootloader unlocked through the middleman).
Good Luck!

I've searched a bit and the only root tutorial I can find is locked pending an update.
The phone is on 4.4.4. Is it the same recovery as the non-4G version? Because I've recently successfully flashed recovery and rooted on that phone and wondered if I could use the same files.
I'm comfortable with commands in the terminal so just need to know if its possible and what files to download.
Also, the person it's for isn't bothered about the upcoming Lollipop update so can just wait for a new root method for that.

First you need to unlock the device here:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Then install TWRP through fastboot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-0-1-moto-g-2014-t2896165
If you need root, get SuperSU (download the recovery zip)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23427715&postcount=1
Thanks. I've unlocked the bootloader (first thing I did). Is it the same files as the non-4G? Or should I download those specifically?

I have not the slightest idea what you are talking about. There is only one image of TWRP for Moto G (2014).
And SuperSU is universal for all devices.

I've tried flashing recovery but I'm getting a boot up failed error.
Any idea what's went wrong?
Did you use the TWRP recovery that @doppelhelix posted? If that one doesn´t work you can try philz: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-cwm-philz-touch-6-moto-g-2014-t2896586
And the Moto G 2 Gen is an almost completely different phone then the 2013 Moto G. Don´t use roms, recoveries etc. made for that device.

Yep. I'll try this one as well.
Is using fastboot boot command the only way to boot into recovery?
If the phone is off press power+vol.down for 5sec. Custom ROMs or Gravity Box for Xposed will give you a extended shutdown menu

I'm trying on the 4G version, I just wondered if I could use recovery from the 2013 model because I've recently flashed recovery on one (doesn't work by the way).
I've tried the touch version and get the same error. Using fastboot boot command just boots into the Motorola logo and slowly turns the screen blue.
Why does it just turn blue? All I want to do is root to install Xposed.
After more searching I realised I've been forgetting to adb reboot bootloader before flashing recovery. Could that be why?
Keep in mind xposed is not yet out for 5.0 just so you know
Hello, this is my first post on xda but I have been using xda (without an account) for around 1-2 years. Also please forgive me if im writing this in the wrong section. Anyways, I was wondering how to install a custom boot animation for my moto e5 play (james). I have tried using the boot animation app by JRummy Apps. (I don't know if you can change the animation through flashing zips or something) It says its installed but when i reboot, it still shows the regular "Hello Moto" one. I've tried many times with different animations but none seem to work. Did I do something wrong or is it impossible for my moto? Also, my bootloader is unlocked, I have TWRP Custom Recovery and I am rooted using Magisk. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!
