Hi guys,
I'm on 2.1 Stock ROM, no taskkillers etc.
My homescreen is completely frozen as I type now and I can't open the apps menu (the app drawer with 3D conveyor belt effects) or slide to any other homescreen whether i lock/unlock the screen as many times i want!
On touching any homescreen icon absolutely unrelated apps are launching, eg, on touching messaging icon the stock camera launches (whose icon is on a different homescreen!)...on touching market icon...color flashlight launches (icon not on any homescreen...straight in app menu/drawer) etc etc! So cant launch maps or anything. 8 icons on homescreen and remaining space is taken by weather widget donation HTC style clock.
Wait a min...a call just came through fine and I could answer it...after hanging up I could touch all home screen icons and they were working but then suddenly my entire home screen rotated and went to landscape mode! Like all home menu icons, weather clock etc are in landscape/vertical direction and not alined/fitted to the entire screen...as in the ends of icons are cut off as the whole page looks magnified cos its obv not intended to be like that. Landscape orientation is not supported or needed on homescreens/app menu etc on the N1. Why is this happening (never came across this orientation change issues in any forums inc. xda) , why the hang?! Weird things regarding touch sensitivity and screen behaviour etc keep happening from time to time but I know about all that screen, touch sensor make and quality issues etc etc.
Also, I've noticed that everytime after a restart my phone takes atleast 20 mins to half hour plus to get everything working snappily and respond at full speed, eg, till then homescreen transitions are not smooth, all gallery pics dont load up to show for a long while (16 gig class 2 sandisk card). Is this normal?
Sometimes after switching to 3G my 3G watchdog (mobile data transfer measurement app) doesn't auto launch (app issue maybe?) and sometimes no mater how many times I choose wifi ON, it doesn't turn on! Switching it off from power control widget (i.e., 3G on) and then on again doesn't turn on wifi either even when good signal on my laptop!
Earlier today my phone was lying on the desk and it auto-restarted god knows why! The phone freeze happened like 10-11 hours after the restart today afternoon so memory etc wasn't so full or too many apps launched. The home screen rotation orientation has changed before in the past too so not first time to be clear.
I have still more than 80 mb app memory free in internal memory and dont overload my phone with crappy apps etc etc.
Pls advice and discuss.
I know you're on a stock rom now, but have you previously unlocked the bootloader and flashed anything else like recoveries, roms, etc?
If you have and you just reverted back to a stock rom, you could've downloaded a bad rom.
Have you dropped your phone? banged it around a bit?

Nope...none of those...fresh as a daisy!
Ok, well 2 options...
Option #1 - Return your phone for a new one if it's under warranty.
Option #2 - Unlock the bootloader, upgrade your recovery, flash the new radio and upgrade to a new rom like cyanogenmod. Come to the Dark Side young skywalker.

So returning or rooting are my only options??? Why does the screen rotate weirdly? Is there any explanation of what's gone wrong?!
See if its a hardware n I root then I'll cry later due to voided warranty n in UK we get a 2 year warranty.
As far as bumps or knocks are concerned...ofcourse the phone takes normal hits or once or twice falls from my laptop to my carpeted floor but that's all.
There has to be logic behind this!
strange sceen happenings...
I've had the same ghost in my machine. In addition, my nexus would lose communication with the network and the cool startup screen with the streaming x would show. I had to pull the battery to get things back to normal. Enom suggested to watch my apps, he thought maybe one had a memory leak.
I found that moving my apps to my sdcard made my phone shot my phone to the streaming x about twice a day. Since wiping and not doing this, I haven't had that problem. I also found that my fav craigslist app was causing my screen to go unresponsive. I think the craigslist app was checking it's update and monopolized the cpu. Since my wipe i havent' installed it and the phone is working better.
Last, I installed nextheme 1.8.1. It also seems to quell the errant screen happenings. The screen still has it's moments, but if i press the off button and turn the phone back on again, i have control back.
I still have problems, but i've gotten them managable. I don't think it's a hardware problem because my rom choise and app selection really affect it. If it were hardware, it would be more consisitant regardless.
Hope this helps...
This may give us some sense on how widespread the issue is. No answers based on informal fixes please.
Meaningless poll.
As long as samsung won't move the app data to the ROM instead of the internal SD, there will be a lag when opening some of the apps.
Menus flow swiftly, though.
Coming from a HTC Touch HD the lag is nonexistent in my view, what stutters people seem to be complaining about are pretty much nonevents to me.
mine had a lag (received today)...until i updated the firmware to JG3. BIG difference now
^
Now this is new to me, is JG3 compatible with UK devices?

It may be meaninless to you, but I would like to have a sense, before purchasing the phone, if this is a widespread issue or just a matter involving few noisy owners. If this is a widespread issue and I need to rely on Samsung's not so impressing update reputation, I may wait a little bit.

You have to remember, people who come into forums are the one with problems.
Nobody goes to the doctors office and say, "Look I'm healthy and I have no problems." and just walk out. Only those with problems or concerns walk into a doctors office, no?

Not these forums. People come to XDA not only with problems but to learn more about their phone and share experiences, especially those early adopters who buy the phone right away.
I sometimes have a bit of lag, but nothing that makes me think, "why did I buy this phone", for me the Galaxy S is everything I wanted from a Android phone, it's powerful, screen is beautiful and it runs all my apps very smoothly.
The lags happened very rarely and most times the phone is snappy. Such things happened to all phones, even my wife's iphone. Still much better than winmo where most things lagged big time.
Though after I switched to using autokiller with aggressive setting, I dun get the lags anymore. My free memory also stay above 100mb all the time without me having to kill any apps manually
I disabled the samsung widgets and i am alot better now.
2 solutions :
We don't have the same phone or we don't know what a lag is
When I try to delete a mail it takes between 10s to 30s. If it is not a lag what is it??
On the iphone I can't tel you how fast it is as it is less than 1 seconde
And I have flashed my phone to the new rom ...

But the thing with your example is, is it really deleting the email in 1 second or is it just displaying the email is gone and just spending 9 seconds in the background actually deleting it?
It's nothing to make it appear that the email has actually gone while it actually does the work in it's own time.

I was using it for over a week, then flashed JG3. Lags seems pretty much gone with this firmware.
I got quite horrendous lag at times on the original firmware (JF3).
Now I am on JG1 with the MoDaCo R2 ROM and Autokiller (set to aggressive originally, now trying on optimum) and I don't seem to get much lag at all, if any. It is like a different phone.
Unfortunately I did have to do a factory reset last night but that was other problems - I do hope that's not a regular occurrence though.
when I say it's a lag i mean that during 10 to 30 sec the phone is blocked with the popup box where you hit the button delete.
I must confess I don't reallycare if the mail is really gone or not in 1s ... what I know is that I have to wait 20sec to be able to open a new mail.
If the iphone is smart enough to display the mail as deleted and let me work on another one while it is really deleting the mail on the background ... it might mean that it has 2 years of advance compared to my phone as it is now. I prefer to believe that's not the case
last night I couldn't get the phone to accept my unlock pattern. had to turn it off completely and then turn it on again...
by "not accept" i mean the screen wouldn't light up red or green when i was swiping my finger over it and the screen would turn on and off.
I'm doing a factory reset now.
I also can't use the kies program - the mtp application flicks on and off.
hoping the factory reset will solve my problems...

I understand that you may have issues but this has nothing to do with a lag, which is what this poll and thread all about.
I just tested mine now, I have the stock JF3(?) ROM that came with the phone, I deleted an email from my Hotmail, and replied to a different email in 2 seconds, no lag in email at all.

I noticed lag sometimes on my JF3 but only when using Yahoo Mail application (from Yahoo Inc.), it just stuck in black screen at either email-loading or going back for some seconds (and many times pop-up came-up to Force Close the application _but_ after some seconds application came back).
This is the only lag I am facing related to emails. Other lag I some time notice in Dolphin HD browser when opening it first time OR switching to new link. Default browser is very fast as compare to this.
Hello everyone.
I'm running on cocore 9.8 and ikaster's pure vanilla rom, with hungarian baseband. I would say I'm moderately satisfied with the phones performance most of the time. I mean apps run smoothly, except when I have a program running(lets say WAZE, facebook, clash of clans, or even poweramp) and I get a call. This makes the phone lag hard, if it manages to proceed to showing the dial screen in time, and I get to actually pick up the phone, it still lags for about 5-10 second while the calling party is waiting for me to join the conversation. What I must say could be really embarrassing and annoying. What I am looking for is a solution for this. What I thought about, is to set up a process what clears my memory, or exit the application running right when the call comes in. Since 95% of the time I'm not doing anything uninterruptable on the phone (clash of clans or facebook) I wouldnt mind shutting down Everything for a call. Because it's a phone afterall, and I want to be able to pick it up.
I'm also ready to switch rom's if it is necessary to obtain better multitasking or prioritizing, if it's worth the hassle. I've been reading the hyped roms lately, but the responses are pretty mixed, and I'm not confident enough it is worth spending hours on installing a different rom(i know installing takes minutes, but costumizing, installing applications, and generally getting familiar with the new stuffs could take a whole bunch of time), I would love to try them all, but I just dont have the time to mess around with it. Besides I have work calls to make quite often. I'm aware that you are not allowed to recommend any rom (try it for yourself is the policy), but I would like to know if you think I could get better experience if I switch maybe to the indian baseband or the latest italian, or go with cm 10.2, even if there is any way to fix this problem.
How i got along with the phone is that I clean the background applications mostly after I'm done using the phone for now, this way it responds fine, and works alright. But sadly I can't do that when a call comes in. I don't even understand why this is have to go this way, since what I've read is that the OS should deal with the background applications and ram management, but somehow it doesnt seem to work as smooth as it should and it often requires manual cleaning. Also i do not use task killers (i've read they do more harm than good), I do it manually long pressing the home button.
again what i see as the easiest and 'best' option is to find a way to make the phone do this automatically whenever a call comes in, and possibly do it before the ram gets filled up and the phones goes numb.
Thank you for your help in advance
I bought a used Droid Bionic off eBay cheap as a temporary replacement for my broken Samsung S3 to last until contract renewal time. But, this thing is just a turd. It's a PITA to use.
I'm running SlimKat in Slot 1. That's the only custom ROM I have installed. But it's just as slow if I boot the stock rom (and was before I rooted or did any customizing).
When I get a call, it rings several times before the screen wakes up so I can answer it. A couple times, the call has gone to voicemail before the screen woke up so I could answer the call. The capacitive buttons light up, it vibrates, the ringtone plays, but the screen stays dark until the 3rd ring.
Sometimes it takes 10 or 15 seconds just to get the keyboard to come up when I touch a text entry box. Doesn't matter what app or what keyboard I use.
Sometimes it takes so long for it to respond to a touch that I don't know if it registered my touch so I touch the screen again then a few seconds later it registers both touches which totally screws up whatever I was trying to do and I have to start over.
Sometimes I just want to throw this thing against a brick wall. It would be very satisfying to watch it shatter into pieces. It's frustrating me so much, I'm seriously thinking of borrowing a friend's old iPhone... Just typing that made me feel dirty, but that's how bad it is.
I don't see anybody else complaining. What's wrong with my phone?

Have you tried running LagFix (from the Play Store; I am unable to post a link)? My phone slowed significantly over time while running CM11 nightlies; I occasionally boot into stock and run LagFix and it does clear up a fair number of slowdowns. This seems the most likely cause which would impact both stock and slot performance.
It's not ROM but the battery that makes phone slow over the time... Old battery creates static charge and unable to generate enough discharge to run the phone.
Replace the battery with the new one.. And you are good to go...

I tried LagFix, but got an error saying it was incompatible.
My battery does die awfully fast, so I've ordered a replacement. I have doubts about that fixing the slowness, but I needed a new battery anyway so it won't be a total loss if it doesn't work.

Not sure what you are doing to your Bionic to make it so slow. Mine is by far no speed demon but definitely not slow. Do you have a lot of unnecessary crap such as widgets, themes, etc.. running?

Not at all. The only widget I use is the calendar widget. I use Nova launcher, trimmed down to one home screen. No themes. No games. Only a handful of apps and most of those are utilities (ES File Explorer, Swifkey, Dropbox, XBMC remote, an alarm clock, etc.). Facebook is the only social media app.

That is bizarre, must be Slim Kat. I am on CM M8 and while it does have some minor slow downs sometimes but nothing what you describe.
(A good time to update SafeStrap if you are not on the newest version)

LagFix has to be run from the stock install, rather than from a custom rom slot; it will then work only on the /data partition, which is normal.
Concerning the delay in pulling up the screen for an incoming call, I also have that same issue inconsistently on CM11 nightlies - it's often the third pulse of the motor before the screen wakes up. I haven't found a good solution to this, as it seems to be related to the phone being in deep sleep with the second core hot-unplugged. You may be able to increase the responsiveness at the cost of battery life by increasing the minimum processor speed or using a different governor, but I haven't experimented with this systematically enough to make a recommendation.
I found a solution!!
A new Samsung Galaxy S5 will be here tomorrow.

Battery effecting speed seems quite farfetched. If you say it's "static charge" that really means nothing. Maybe you mean it won't source enough current. Therefore effecting processor speed? If so then plugging in would fix you up.
Hi Everyone. I'm relatively new here, but would appreciate any advice offered.
I've had my M7 for almost 2 years now, and it's been a great phone. My issue is that the phone seems to have randomly become very slow. When I got the phone, I was amazed at how quickly the phone booted. Now when I do a reset, it easily takes 2-3 times as long as it used to. More importantly, the phone will lag when turning on with the power button (to the point where I wonder if I hit the button hard enough, and push it again, causing the phone screen to come on then immediately go off). Responding to texts is slow, the keyboard will occasionally lag opening up. Texting is sometime laggy as well, with words not appearing for several seconds. Scrolling through web pages is also laggy at times. Gaming is relatively fine; I haven't noticed any slow down issues when playing, although I suppose games could load faster, but I can't notice if there is a difference from when I got the phone until now.
The phone has also gotten wonky with adjusting the volume. Sometimes I will try to adjust the volume, but it adjusts the app/games volume instead of the main/ringtone volume (when I'm not in an app or game).
I do have a lot of stuff on the phone, but routinely clean out photos and apps I don't use. I'm using 23.8 gigs out of the 32g available, so I should have plenty of space. I also close out apps regularly, so I don't think it is a memory loss issue.
I've wondered if it is the apps running in the background. It's hard to tell, as the biggest ram offender is "settings." Right now for example, settings is using 76MB of ram, but i have no idea why. I've closed all apps as well. I'm on AT&T, so of course I have a bunch of their crap running in the background, but most of it is relatively small.
I've thought about doing a factory reset, or even rooting, to see if that would help, before I decide to just go ahead and upgrade to a new phone. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

Plug the phone into your pc and copy the entire contins of the sdcard to a folder on your pc. when it's done do a factory reset from the bootloader
setup the phone as a new phone and only copy back the stuff you really need and use. This should be done about every 6 months in my opinion
How is your storage? I had the same symptoms a few months ago, and what fixed it was clearing up some space from the phone. It used to have only 2-3 GB space left, and when I removed all the media files I got 12-13 GB free space left, and suddenly the phone is back to snappy again!
When I encountered the same situation, I was rooted and running CM 12, but no amount of wipes would resolve the issue. What I did that resolved the issue was to load the RUU for my HBOOT version, re-root my One, change the system to S-Off (hence not updating the HBOOT version), and then reloading everything. In all honesty, it took about 8 hours if you include the banging my head against the wall trying to download the right files, but the performance is increased about 25%, with the battery performance having increased about 30%. Before, about 4 hours of activity would kill it, now she can handle 5 to 5:45 of activity. I was initially thinking about grabbing a new phone, but the change after reloading everything makes me think that another she'll be good for another year.
