No screen protector on my phone and my god, gorilla glass 5 sucks so bad. I've put this phone through the same exact usage and storage and pockets and what not that my 3t went through and holy crap it is so scratched up and cracked from less than 1 month of using it. I take really good care of my phones so every time i pull this out of my pocket and see a new one i get so frustrated beyond belief. Theres over 30 scratches and grooves on my phone now and theres 0 on my 3t. If anything ive been way gentler on this phone than my 3t. This is a case where the higher number is worse.
I am not sure..but something is pricking the device in your pocket..
For me gorilla glass 5 is a flop.
I NEVER use my phones naked! there is no scratch resistant glass yet in use in the actual smartphones.
My phone pocket is dedicated solely to my phone. Its judt that gorilla glass 5 has no scratch resistance especially not as mucn as 4 did. Theres no scratches on my 3t.... It pisses me off that i paid 500 bucks for a phone that cant even take a key.
I'm not rocking a screen protector. It's been over a month. Gorilla glass is holding up very well. No scratches at all. No complaints.
I don't put my keys in the same pocket as my phone though. That's crazy! Lol

That's your problem right there.......Sorry, but I treat my phone better than that. Keys never ever touch my phone. I don't care what kind of advertisements about new glass tech there are. If you care so much about scratches to post about it here, then you should be using a screen protector or being more careful with your phone.
My OP5 screen is naked and I have not had any issues with it. Phone protection is really a personal thing. Everyone treats their phone different. Depending on what you do, protect your phone accordingly. There really is not comparison between different people.
I dont keep my keys near my phone. Idk where u all got that info from as I said i only keep my phone in its own pocket with nothing else. These scratches appear from nowhere and show how brittle and weak this glass if if my 3t went through the same usage as this one with no scratches
What screen protector do you all recommend? i just bought this spigen case here. Should i just get the protector from oneplus' website? Or is there a really good one that can slide under the case so its not even noticable?

You don't seem to understand how it works. First, GG won't protect your from cracks, only scratches. Secondly, it's still limited to the hardness of the glass. Any mineral that's harder than it will scratch it, so it's immune to keys, but sand will wreck it.
I am not a screen protector fan.. but reading so many compliments about how poor gorilla glass 5 is vs scratches.. hmm, damn! I will have to think twice before removing the pre-applied screen protector..

Are we sure he took off the preinstalled protector, and it's not just scratches in the plastic protector?
I have been using my phone with only the pteinstalled protector. I have got 0 scratches on my phone. I take good care of it but I also take my phone with me when I do sports, biking/runing etc.

Sorry can't believe that a soft cloth pocket would scratch ANY smartphone screen these days or even from 3 years ago. Something scratched that screen and certainly if you're mentioning gouges. You mentioned a key... that is what did it and just lightly in a pocket wouldnt do it either... so must have sat on the phone with the key as well.

Even that wouldn't have done it, I don't think. JerryRigEverything tried to scratch the screen with keys and it didn't do anything. He'd either have to put a LOT of pressure on it, or he has shards of something harder in his pocket [sand, probably]

Hi,
Can anyone help? I've been trying to find out if the glass used on the HD7 is Gorilla Glass (or an equivalent). A student of mine showed me how to drag a screwdriver up and down a Desire HD screen with no affect whatsoever, so I'm hoping the HD7 is built of the same stuff. I'm also rubbish at putting screen protectors on
Cheers...
YT
From what I was told at Mobile media, It is a gorilla screen/equivalent.
Why don't you try the same with the screwdriver and let know how did that work out for you?
LOL.... Why do you care dude. Personally, I use a full transparent sleeve for my device which is not silicon or hard plastic, but fixable. This cover, does not allow the screen to touch the surface when the phone is put screen down. So I have removed the screen protector.
So, if you have something like that, I guess you are fine without the screen protector. I usually put my phone in my pockets which have my car keys or coins and my cig lighter and stuff. They never scratched the screen.

The best screen protectors I know of are from Zagg and Bodyguardz. They are both Military Grade. From experience I would choose Bodyguard. Zaggs are easy to find in stores though. Use both a screen protector and hard case, it goes hand in hand.
I never used a screen protector on my HD2 and it is completely scratch-free. I don't have one on my HD7 either and again, no scratches.
Having said that, I have a golden rule of never putting my phone in a pocket together with anything hard (oo-er!). My keys always go in a different pocket.
Glass is generally quite hard to scratch though.
It'd be really cool if they made phone screens out of a slice of man-made white sapphire like they use on Rolex watches. That stuff is the second hardest transparent substance known to man, second only to diamond. Mind you, that might put the price up a bit, my Submariner was over three grand....
I had my HD7 since it came out, no screen protector, no pouch, no scratches at all.
Well, my asnwer is a little late, but...
Corning lists the HD7 (along with many other HTC phones) as a Gorilla Glass devices.
I can't post the link since I'm a new user.
But check out corninggorillaglass[dot]com/featured-products
Although, my HD7 already has scratches. It had them after about a week. Just from having it in my pocket.
Really..
I was trying to find that information out also, funny that Corning lists our HD7s as having Gorilla Glass because I have micro scratches on mine also. Hmm....
My HD2, which they list also is smashed to pieces from a drop of about 2 1/2 feet on the ground. Either the glass isn't as tough as they say or somewhere they're dropping the ball on certain phones (USA maybe?).
Cyph
HTC phones were never listed has having GG before until recently. Leads me to believe that the ones use by HTC are not the same because I seriously doubt some of the earlier phones have em. It looks like they pretty much just put their whole entire lineup on there.

My HD7 picked up a tiny scratch after 3 days use. The screen scratches, period.
Buy a screen protector and forget all about what make of glass it is, its glass which needs protection.
Im considering getting a HD7 (To replace my Motorola MileStone) & the screen is my biggest concern
Can the HD7 take a hit or survive a fall ? without the screen being shattered into pieces ?
I knew some who dropped his HD2 & the screen got shattered & it costs (eql. 300 USD) to fix it in Saudi Arabia , which more than the price of a new HD2 these days
I can't have a sensitive phone like that ,especially coming from Motorola MileStone (now thats one tough phone , you won't believe what my MileStone survived)
I really like the HD7 (& the Windows Phone 7 platform) , but if thats means I've to replace the screen every time the phone falls from me , I think I'll better off with a Motorola Atrix running Launcher 7
Thanks for your help

The screen is glass, yes it will shatter! Best suggestion is buy a good case.
little random...but i suggest an anti glare, matte screen protector to everyone! pretty awesome....and its drastically eliminated finger prints, hated having to wipe the screen all the time.
I have dropped my HD7 3 times so far, but I have an aluminum case from pdair. Has totally been worth the case. Otterbox also has a commuter case. I think with the right case they're ok.

I personally think the build quality of the HD2 is better than HD7. Since the HD2 is a completely candybar, doesn't like the HD7 on the top and bottom part. I dropped my HD2 several times, put to the same pockets but there was no damage that can be seen clearly outside. But that story doesn't happen with my HD7. One drop to hard surface, on the pockets as daily use = one noticeable scratch, one small dot crack inside the screen + damages outside.
Make me want to have another phone right now, but there is no point to buy a Windows Phone right now since the Mango come with Skype and front camera, maybe a better CPU...
I just got my note and as usual l am very paranoid about it. Will using S Pen frequently scratch it?
BTW: I wrote this entire message with handwriting recognition on note.

Well, think about this - will you actually be using the stylus all the time? I'm still going to be using my finger for most things, unless I really want to make precise lines, write, etc. I'm not going to color or paint, that isn't something I'd do, but write lists, perhaps...that's about it. So, if it only comes out occasionally, then I don't see the issue. It is glass, after all, not a soft material like my old Palm unit - I wore out the upper corners playing solitaire
I've had my Dell Streak for over a year. First 3 month, kept a screen protector on it, but I took it off and have been screen protector free since. In and out of a pouch dozens of times a day, not one scratch. If it has gorilla glass, don't worry about it unless you use a diamond tip

If you're pressing hard enough to make noise, I actually wonder if the screen is going to break the stylus. The tip looks like it's made of plastic.
Slightly off topic, if you write a lot it might be worth getting a screen protector so the surface has more friction. I used to stick scotch tape to my palm so the stylus felt more like a pencil.
- Frank
Back in the days of the windows tablet (yes long before the iPad) I had an Acer that I could only operate with a stylus. A wacom stylus, with the same tip as the one that comes with the Note. I used it for years on a day to day basis and even used a writing to text input. Not a scratch! And this was without a screen protector.
Because the Note has a (gorilla) glass screen (in contrast to the Acer which had some kind of plastic screen) it didn't even come to my mind that I could ever scratch the Note screen with the stylus.

Ha lol, yeah that was a nice tip floating around on the internet those days. The scotch tape tip . Nostalgic!
Hello. I bought a galaxy note on 28th november. After only 2 weeks of absolutely normal and careful use, my screen is scratched and broken. Ok, it is a small crack, but it is not good.
It never fell and it never hit anything. After only 2 days, i noticed some scratchs and some other came in the days after. Then, the part of the screen between the upper edge and the speaker broke in two, with a crack (small, 5mm but still a crack) going from the edge to the speaker. I can't post a photo as i sent it back to samsung for repairs (it had also display issues). Do you know a reason for it? It should be gorilla glass, and i only kept it in my pockets without anything inside apart the smartphone. Do you think samsung will repair it since it happened during normal use after ONLY 2 weeks? I'm really annoyed and disappointed.
Anyone experiencing glass resistance issues?
Thanks
Call samsung and send it in they will fix it..
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Yes, i did it and i'm waiting, and i also adressed the lines issue and the green/banded screen, but i am in italy and i'm not sure if it is covered by warranty, it should: they can say i broke it.
The Corning Gorilla Glass was one reason I went with the SGS2.
The other reason was fear of provoking the wrath of God for having such a sensationally beautiful device (the Note). It's an awesome device, really.
But God smote those who worshiped a golden calf, too.
lol Sorry, I'm not really a religious fanatic. But yeah, sucks about your screen. Hope Sammy fixes that one up for you.
Welcome Nickelsilver and please don't take this personally and in NO way I'm defending Samsung or the Note but I have to say the neither scratches or dents/cracks come by their own.
They just don't happen/appear magically by themselves on the phone's screen/body. Maybe someone is messing with you Note without you knowing it?
E.g: I have 1mm small and barely noticeable scratch on the top left corner which I suspect it came from the ONLY 1 time my Note slipped from the passenger's seat and fell in the gap between the passenger's door/seat.
I went through 3 screens on my dell streak. Now that I have the note which is even bigger I was so cautious I treated it like a delicate fragile little flower. Needless to say after 2 weeks I noticed what appeared to be a scratch going up from the bottom middle halfway up. Turns out this is not a magical scratch that sprang out of nowhere but an actual crack on the outer glass screen. I have never dropped it but perhaps it was somehow flexed.
No warranty of course. I have ordered the glass itself from overseas and when it gets here in a month I suppose I will try replacing that piece individually as its only the outer glass that seems cracked. Hopefully they do not glue the screens together like they did in the streak ><

Plus.. He forgot that he has also once posted a question regarding to his screen problem too here on the forum.
Gorilla glass is bull****. I had dell 5 streak, and I changed the screen more than 5 times. Little drop will result in screen loss. Do not depend on gorilla glass.
My Samsung Galaxy Note are broke
Yesterday I was knocked out of the hands under my 40 days old Samsung Galaxy Note, the cover glass is cracked along its entire length as a spider's web, while the LCD screen is not damaged, that still works, receiving the touch command. The solution I found in the orders of the new protective glass over eBay. Maybe that was too much angry because it happened to me, but NOTE is too amazing, and I somehow survive.. I'll let it be when we come new safety glass
I do not think this is a witch hunt. More of an informative thread on one weakness to an otherwise amazing device. It may be that until an indestructive clear glass is created that we will continually face this on any large phone. Anything this large will flex easily and likely crack. One thing Samsung definately did right was not glue the glass to the LCD behind it. I put a clear screen cover over mine and you cant even see the crack anymore. Were this a dell streak you would have half of your screen blacked out.
This is definitely the best mobile device out there in my opinion, people should just be extremely cautious with where they carry it. Mine most likely cracked in my pocket from slight flexing.
The glass on the note shouldn't break even when flexed unless it's not Gorilla glass.
Gorilla glass is not only scratch resistant,it is also shatter resistant.
If the glass is breaking frequently on the notes, then I wonder if they really have Gorilla glass.

That demonstration glass at the beginning of the video is about 3 times thicker than what Samsung uses on the Note/Galaxy S2/Galaxy S SAMOLED panels. And it's quite a bit smaller, height/width wise (it's about iPhone 4 sized).
Thickness makes a significant difference in flexibility and shatter resistance. Which is off on a tangent, because the main reason Samsung and others uses GG and similar techniques is not for shatter resistance.
It's almost entirely for the combination of higher scratch resistance vs metals (all bets are off with sand particles) and a better tactile feel (it's smoother) than non-treated glass.
Sure it may not be as thick on the note but you are never going to flex the phone anywhere as much as that demonstration.
My point is that if it is gorilla glass,it shouldn't be that easy to crack the screen given the abuse that it is supposed to be able to take.
All these? Gorilla Glass
And all these? Gorilla Glass
How about all these? Gorilla Glass
Or maybe all these? Gorilla Glass
It's been 10 days since i bought "the Note". I dropped the device just once from 1 meter height. It was a free fall with not much impact power. The screen has a crack on the upper right corner. I know every product is meant to last but so easy , so fast ! ??? Thankfully it still works with no functional issues. It's just the protective glass on top of the actual LCD that is broken. But u can still feel it while wiping your finger and it is appearent...
Hardware wise The Note is simply outragous but when it comes to software and durability it can't even come closer to what i used to find on HTC devices

The weight of the note will count against it during falls compared to say a very light phone like the SG2.Impact is going to be much harder if they both fell from the same height especially given te size of the notes screen.
Until they can make the note lighter, users will just have to be more careful not to drop it.Gorilla glass is not unbreakable.
I get my note tomorrow. Now I'm all paranoid
I saw multiple threads on this forum about people reporting issues about this phone screen including cracks and scratches and even breaking my question is is this true although the phone screen should have Gorilla glass ? And do I need to put on screen protector ?
Thanks in advance and hoping someone should answer me.
check the Corning's website, in the products section, for HTC phones, and you'll see that it's not listed there... neither Sensation XL, nor Sensation XE, only the regular Sensation...
also, I've talked to a guy from HTC support (Romania), and he confirmed that the Sensation XL does not come with Gorilla Glass, unfortunately...
some users say they don't use any screen protection, and they didn't get any scratches, others say they did... so, maybe some of them have, others don't...I think you should consider buying a screen protector...
I'm buying this phone in a few days, and, even though I'd really like to use the phone as it is (no case/screen protector), for the money I'm paying for it, I though it's best to get a case and a screen protector... at least for a while...
but how can this happen? such a unique phone doesn't have gorilla glass inspite other earlier phones have it.and regarding the gorilla website ,if you check that list you will see that some recent phones aren't listed as well like htc titan and htc one.Iam really confused.

Dude, check out the thread i started. I have alot of issues with the screen but i take really good care of my phone. I have a big scratch at the top of my phone, which probably got there cause the screen couldnt handle the difference in temperature of warm pockets and cold winter air.
?????
My phohe was experiencing cold many times this winter -18 ( Celsius ) at a time even -20 C, and even heat, and i have no scratches .I never heard that scratch would appear because of a cold weather. That is really silly
Not sure on the gorilla glass, but I have mine in the pocket without a case, and with my keys in, I used to worry, not anymore!
Not like my Desire-z that screen used to scratch if you had a bit of sand on your finger
I asked a htc rep at work at work and as expected the phone doen't have it. As proof my friend dropped mine today and its now cracked. Luckily I'm not paying for the repair
Dont know how people using their devices, but i carry it in my pocket without any protection (except at work is somethimes in leather case cause of difficult conditions) and it have no scratches.
Even on ace after 1 year of usage there is no a single scratch.
well
Well a long time ago i have spoken with a HTC customer care and they told me that there isn't GG on XL.
I do not use any kind of protectors or else. Go to the gym, work, throw it at my place everywhere and didn't get any scratches.
I am not a fan from screen protectors and would rather not to use one. Because most of them are made somewhere in some asian garage and we don't know what material did they use. If i scratch it one day i will replace the whole front glass with another. I am not used to serve the tech....the tech must serve me
Does it even matter if the SXL has gorilla glass or not? My Desire HD had gorilla glass and i put a big scratch on the screen when it fell off my bed (No lie). It's not all it's cracked up to be. Normal mineral glass is just as good IMO.

Thought I'd share this video with you guys, this is mostly for those who want to keep their phones without any case so they may be able to take the proper precautions.
And for those who don't want to watch the whole video, skip towards 3/4 of the video and you will see the Nexus 5 screen break down after just one drop on it's screen, it was still functional but it was badly damage so this is more so you all may be careful and see what could happen if you phone falls just once on its screen at chest level.
hate too see this kind of test, obviusly if I drop the phone it will be somehow damaged, even if I drop my worst enemy head will be damaged.. just wasting of time and money
That was PAINFUL to watch, i cringed :crying: , wow i was very very surprised how bad it did, whole sections of the screen dettached themselves from the phone, I seriously thought gorilla glass was stronger
pretty brutal
prob grabbing a case just because of the camera protrusion however this helps reinforce that decision

this guy gets sent free phones to do these tests
Good video, but I can't stand cases.
Takes a cool looking phone and makes them look like bricks out of the 1980s.
No thanks. Keep your phones cool, don't be scared.

Gorilla Glass is just that - glass. It doesn't take side damage or flat landing good at all. The way Apple, Samsung & co are trying to protect the glass from drop damage is using an extra rim around the front panel, something that is missing from the Nexus 5, so no surprises that the screen cracked. What surprised me is the rigid plastic that shattered way too easy, it's something really cheap sorry to say.
The N5 is a lot more fragile than the N4. The phone isn't as rugged, though.
The N5 has no aluminum rim bezel as the N4. My N4 has fell from about the same height and only the bezel got dented. It is that rugged.

One of the advertising points for the N5, Moto X, and I believe G2 is the side-to-side glass. The extra rim isn't missing; it is intentionally left off. I love that combined with Pie controls.
But yes, the Gorilla Glass is just glass. I agree with your point here. It is supposed to be scratch resistant, not drop-proof diamond material. People always seem amazed by these videos when the glass breaks. Guys, it is glass, it breaks when you drop it. It doesn't matter if it's a phone, a computer, a TV, or even a watch. Glass breaks when it hits something hard at a decent speed. Nothing surprising there.
I never understood the purpose of these drops tests. Wouldn't you have to drop hundreds if not thousands to arrive at a conclusion? There are tons of people who post that their screen broke on a drop but someone would come on and say they dropped there's and only got a dent.
When they do crash ratings on cars, they do very specific tests at pre-determined angles of impact, etc...
These drop videos are some random dude that drops it and the phone lands at some random angle.
Remind me not to drop this thing! I miss the days when you could drop a phone and the worst thing that happened was the battery cover popping off...

Yeah, they were like Legos. You drop the phone, it shoots one way, the battery case shoots another way, the battery itself shoots a third way. Although that was unintentional, it is interesting that they make phone cases like that now. I can't recall off the top of my head, but I remember one that was designed to break into multiple parts when it was dropped in order to minimize the impact on the phone itself. Interesting idea. Never owned one, though.
Ordering case now

I'm usually very anti case, but the red one in the Play Store looks rad so I'll probably swoop on one of those

I can't wait til sapphire is the standard on phone screens. I would easily pay extra for a screen made with it.
I agree with you are all saying, sure is just glass and it is likely to break when dropped I mean we all know that is obvious but I decided to post this as a fair warning to every owner cause I have a Samsung S1 aka Captivate and have accidentally dropped it on the screen and not even a scratch, so yeah I know it depends on the build and materials so figured people should be more careful with their N5s.
Is the back cover removable? On the drop test it seems like it is.
I'm asking because I've to choose from a real bumper and a bumper with a protection on the back.

Easy to remove. Just drop your phone! But it probably could be removed, if you were so inclined. I can't imagine why you'd ever want to though. Because your warranty is likely toast if you do. And it may never go on correctly again. Just keep checking Youtube, a teardown video will be up soon enough they will see how hard it is to get off.
EDIT: Nevermind here is the video. Fairly easy to get off. But it is glued at the bottom so your results may vary.

I guess it's a good thing I don't drop my phones. :good:
