How to connect multiple devices via USB cables to raspberry pi? - Raspberry Pi Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 12 devices that I wish to extract data from and archive on Apache server as a file management server for users to access over the network.
The devices have a USB port for which it dumps data on the USB flash drive, provided that it reads the authentication key from the corresponding USB, since each key targets different devices.
Since the USB port on the device is already powered, I intend on modifying the USB cable (shorting the Power and GND) and utilize the TX\RX lines.
How can I connect multiple modified USB cables from devices to the raspberry Pi? Can I use a relay switch board for this solution? Can I store the different authentication keys on the server such that it transmits the keys to specific devices and pulls data from the devices to the server? I have heard that this can be done via the GPIO pins but there isn’t a tutorial that displays these connections and relevant software available.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

XDA USB INTERFACE

hello im working on a htc wallaby usb interface. but i have stumbeld across the problem that the htc wallaby is only a slave interface and therefore cannot use usb devices as they are also slave. how can i make the xda a host device? thankyou.
Raptor,
Read MSDN USB site about USB and the need for a Host Controller in order to host USB peripherals. They recognize that wince/pocketpc should have hosting functionality but they haven't got there yet, therefore all wince devices have to be treated as peripherals for now, which means for now you can only run as slave. If you need to drive a usb peripheral from your wince device an option is to add an SDIO pcmcia USB connector and write USB drivers through it. A forum on ExpertsExchange talks about these add-ons. I can;t imagine this is the solution you're looking for though.

Mini-USB potential

Hi there,
Regarding the mini-USB port, does anyone know if it is specifically for connection in some sort of “slave” mode, or does it have the potential to be used in the same way as the USB port on a normal desktop PC?
In other words, just as a PC can communicate and control a whole load of devices (external drives, printers etc), would it be possible with suitable software for the PPC’s mini-USB to do likewise?
Any ideas most welcome.
Ken
No this is not possible because the phones dont have a host controller as of yet, i don't know if the Universal has this yet but without a controller a device can only connect to a USB connection that does have one so the Wizard is out of the question.
A USB system has an asymmetric design, consisting of a host controller and multiple devices connected in a tree-like fashion using special hub devices

SDIO USB Host

hi i was wondering if anyone out there new if there was an SDIO USB HOST card, similar to the shown on the link below (but obviously SD not CF)
http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/cfu1u.html
if not, does anyone know/have tried the above CF to USB Host with a standard usb webcam and got it to work? if so can you explain how i go about setting it up.
thanks

i'd suspect that the fact that usb to host have to supply 5volt with 0.5mA
it could be an issue for something as thin as an sdcard
also not sure if the sdio interface even operate at 5v
usb host
I haven't seen an sdio to usb card, but I use my "htc universal" with it's mini usb as a usb 1.1 host. It works ok but you have to supply external power.
if you have that working you are the first and only person i know of who gotten any htc device act as usb host
sure there were rumors that it would do host
but later on ppl retracted those claims
After wiring up a cable for that, how do you set the phone to 'host mode'?
Thanks
usb host is not a mode
your pc is in host mode always
as are the 2 htc devices which do support
usb host out of the box
is a device is connected and the driver
is present the device works
Nope, USB host is a mode. It's the whole Master / Slave affair. Granted, it's automatic for most devices when another is connected... ah... that ought to answer my question I guess.

[Q] USB host mode no worky

Bought a Nook Color (blue dot). Rooted and installed CM7 7.1.0-encore. Kernel is 2.6.32.9. Downloaded Nook Tweaks. Followed Moshe's instructions for connecting USB devices to the Nook. Using a powered USB hub. I also have the male/female adapter that verygreen referenced in his thread. Downloaded Root Explorer. No dice.
The Nook does not recognize any USB device. Please tell me what I did wrong or need to do differently. Thank you!!!
Anyone? Please?
USB host aside, the (micro)USB port puts out very little power. For most micro types, the nominal power output is 100mA, which isn't enough to power most USB devices, including most flash keys.
Self-powered USB devices will work. I had some 1st-gen iPod Shuffle that worked, since they're battery powered. Also an unpowered cardreader. I imagine that devices connected to a powered USB hub should also work, although I didn't test that firsthand.
Thank you. From what I've been able to glean, a powered USB hub will allow non-selfpowered devices to be accessed/mounted by the NC. But I can plug in any USB device and it never gets ANY acknowledgement by the NC.
I read somewhere that an app may be interfering with the USB host mode.
Should I attempt to wipe downloaded apps off of the Nook? Should I just try a full wipe/format/reinstall?
Any insight would be appreciated. I've tried to find anything that I missed. But I'm running out of ideas.
From what I've read, success rate with powered hub is itself spotty. It's kind of hit-and-miss.
First thing is try w/o the hub to remove it from the equation. The techsupp mantra for troubleshooting is to minimize your configuration. Your variables are then the Nook itself, your software OS config, the cable, and the device.
Assuming the first two are OK, then find an eligible low-powered device like certain card readers, or a keyboard, or a self-powered device (some MP3 players with USB mass storage), or a HDD powered by a Y-cable connected to a laptop. Second, find a different micro-USB cable if none of the above work. Last, find somebody close by with a CM7 Nook to compare if all else fails.
Once you have at least a known-good setup, then expand from there by trying new periphs, like powered (or non-powered) hubs, et al.
I'll assume the obvious that you've enabled Host Mode in Nook Tweaks, check your /mnt/usbdisk, only FAT16/32 format and no NTFS, no multiple partitions, etc.
Good luck. If all else fails, you can wait for the CM9 with built-in host mode and see if that works better.
Can you specify what exactly you did? which hub?
Which usb devices you tried? and please provide logs
Check my POST for working with a powered-hub

[Q]using this phone as a dhcp server with usb to lan adapter

well, I was wondering, if it is possible to turn this phone in a dhcp server for a LAN using an usb to lan adapter.
I have bough a cheap adapter and it comes with a driver for android, so if someone knows how, or can point me to a manual or similar I would be grateful.
also just in case, I tried connect the adapter to the phone but it isn't detected. (expected result).
going to add the files listed in the folder of driver for android of the adapter is a CH9200 USB Ethernet Adapter driver
thanks for reading.
Just curious how it ended up with the usb lan adapter.
Any update on this ?
