Symptoms: Turn phone on it goes to System updating and then spits me out at a black and white screen with messages of stats failed efs mount. Then proceeds to reboot and the process repeats it's self until the battery dies.
What i've done to fix it:
-Recovery mode doesn't start Up button + Home button + Power button
-Download mode doesn't start either Down button + Home button + Power button
-Taking battery in and out doesn't help either
-Tried different buttons side buttons and power button and home button from another phone
My thoughts:
The Phone received some water damage. Turned it on a few days later and It worked. Wifi was having difficulty starting and home button wasn't working. Phone then decided to do a ota update 10 minutes later then this problem started during the reboot.

Are you sure you have a Note 5?
You can't remove the battery, they're sealed.

Did you know you could have saved your Note 5 serious physical frustration (and harm) all by holding down the Volume down button and the right key at the same time?
It's the same as if you were removing the battery yourself.
How do I know this?
Google is your friend.

My NC will no longer turn on AT ALL -- doesn't even flash the screen -- after maybe about the 4th boot of the Froyo on eMMC install I put on there. It's not my hacking it, that would make no sense as it booted several times before just failing when I rebooted it with ADB after deleting the YouTube app. I think somewhere in there something connected to power just failed. But I suspect if I get it warranty replaced B&N will just blame my rooting it rather than finding the actual cause of the problem.
So I want to know if the extended warranty is just a "no questions asked" type, because that would be helpful in getting my device fixed!
If it won't turn on at the store, they can't check. However this isn't 100% ethical, as you did make major changes, which could be at the heart of this.
Can you boot from sd at all?

I'd say go for it, companies shouldn't get mad at us for doing what we want for the device that we bought.
...But this isn't really the best train of thought for this situation because you want to get another one or your money back xD
Had this same issue earlier. Have you tried booting without the sd card? Plug it into your computer, and see if it shows it as connected, hold down power and try it a few times.

Had this happen to me also. What I did was burn the ClockWorkMod to your SD card, also copy the factory boot.img and system.img file from the [ADV][DEV][STOCK IMAGE]Nook 1.01 stock dd images thread in development. Put it into your Nook, connect the USB cable to your computer and then hold the power button for about 20-30 seconds. It should flash to life, at least mine did. Once it comes up use the volume buttons to scroll down to the mount and storage option. use the "N" button to click it, then click on the mount /system option, then format /system option. then the same for mount /data, then format /data. Finally mount /sdcard, then on your computer using adb, use the adb shell command, and then use the 2 dd command from the thread mentioned above.
Rebbot after that and remove the sdcard, then do the power + N reset and the 9 reboot thing and you should be back at stock.
Hope that helps.
Turned out to be that whatever was broken installed on the eMMC had caused the device to be turned on, with the screen off, but entirely unresponsive to the buttons. I brought it into B&N and managed to get it to power on once with the battery nearly depleted. Then I recharged it, rebooted it and it went black and unresponsive again. They swapped it for me with about 10% battery left. So what will happen is: it will get to the depot with no battery left, they'll power it up, flash it, and it will go to some other deserving customer
I was surprised to find that just putting my phone down in the plastic case it came in from samsung caused the phone to enter download mode, (with the green robot and the warning "do not switch off target"). Shows the buttons are very sensitive.
It wasn't connected to the pc or anything.
Does entering download mode this way , ie accidentally, do anything bad?. I got out of download mode by pulling the battery out. The screen wallpaper had changed but apart from that all my settings seem the same.
Does nothing except be VERY annoying (unless you have a stock firmware copied to your sd card - then it will flash firmware)...
Case will probably keep shutting your phone off , going through and selecting apps and making your volume go up and down as you need to press power, volume down and menu button to go to download mode. You then need to press volume up.
This must be a very tight case and it's strange that the menu button is pressed as most cases don't have a screen guard anymore owing to the touchscreens of new phones.
To turn off you only need to hold power button down for 10 seconds. Don't need to pull battery...
Hi there
I broke screen on my captivate (cm-10.1.2 ; usb debug mode was off)
I NEED the data that is on my phone.
I think the best way is to mount usb drive via recovery (clockworkmod)
I don't really remember menu items...
please someone (with same CM) tell me the key sequence how to get to - usb mount
like:
volume up + volume down + power (10 sec)
volume down x 5
Power
and so on.....
Please help.... I am in real need

Hey,
So if I'm understanding your post correctly,
Step 1: hold power button down until you feel the device vibrate twice.
Step 2: hold volume up+power for a few seconds (since your screen is broken, I'd hold it for like 5-10 seconds just to be sure)
Step 3: now, I counted the amount of times I pressed the volume down button and it was six until I got to MOUNTS AND STORAGE, but I'm on a galaxy s3 using the most recent CWM and it doesn't say specifically "USB MOUNT" but it does say MOUNT SD which is the same thing you're looking for. So I'm going to guess they are probably in the same spot.
Step 4: press volume down three time and hit the power button and that should get you mounted.
I'm going to apologize in advance if that doesn't work considering we are on two different devices but I ran captivate for two years and the muscle memory seems right to me.
If that doesn't work, couldn't you just connect your phone via USB to your computer? Doesn't that pull up all your files?
Anyways, good luck man.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me with batterydrain on my HTC One Telus? I have Betterbatterystats and wakelock detector but I not rooted. Is there an alternative I can use without root?
Thanks in advance,
****this totally solved my battery issues****
****THIS TOTALLY SOLVED MY BATTERY ISSUES****
Hi All
Dont know if youve sorted out your battery issues. I had them too. Phone always lasted a full day (c.16hrs) with about 10-15% spare. Suddenly found it totally dying by about 3pm every day. Tried a few things that didnt work but then came across the post below on a Verizon forum and it totally soved my problem - battery now even better than before, without changing any other sync, wifi, etc settings. Hope it works for you too....
"got an email from HTC support, which I will copy. so far, my battery is back to normal.
I totally understand your concern on this matter with the battery drainage of the phone, and I will be more than glad to assist you.
I ask you to please go to All apps > Settings > Battery or Power, and disable Fast boot. Then, please go to All apps > Settings > Developer options, and enable USB debugging. After doing this, please perform a Cache reset. This process will delete unwanted and temporary files from your phone. It will not mess up your personal files. Just follow the instructions on the attached file.
COPY OF ATTACHED FILE:
Power the phone off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and then while still holding the Volume down, press the Power button as well.
You will get a menu giving you options such as: Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage, and SIMlock
Navigate to “Recovery” using volume buttons, then press power to select.
The screen will change to display a phone on its back, with the update symbol above it. Momentarily it will change to an image of a phone with a red triangle and exclamation mark.
Press and hold volume up then press the power button for about 3seconds. You will see something very similar to the example shown below.
e:can’t open /cache/recovery/command
e:/ failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory exists)
e:/ failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory exists)
e:/ failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory exists)
A new screen will give you options like Reboot system now, Wipe Cache partition, and Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
Navigate to “Wipe Cache” the volume down button and select with Power.
Navigate to “Reboot Phone” with the volume buttons and select with power.
HOPE THIS HELPS ALL Y'ALL (as we say in SC)"

Wow, good find, I'll be trying this tomorrow! I had the battery drain problem after upgrading, along with other issues, I resolved it with a hard reset - which is a pain. Now, several months later, the battery drain issue is back again. Hoping that this will be an easier fix (and that Sprint hasn't done something to prevent me from entering recovery mode). Thanks for the tip!

Of course, first one has to figure out how to enable Developer Options, which has been hidden.
Go to Settings -> About -> Software Information -> More and tap "Build Number" 7 times

A good guide with pictures here ... But it skips the USB debugging step, which I assume is still necessary?

Thanks again for the tip jjmorgan79, my phone is definitely snappier and hopefully this fixes the battery issue too. I suspect this is going to become a monthly activity for me!

I am on pie stable and since "updating" every now and then when using an app the nav bar just does not respond. The rest of the screen is ok but cant get back to the nav bar to move things.
I have tried going into setting during the freeze to change to gestures but this does nothing.
Is this a Pie glitch or something with certain apps.
Saw a screen freeze thread but that had gone on to talk about battery things.
The same happen here sometimes...
Me too... Really annoying. (I concluded that leaving certain apps open are NOT the problem, happens on home screen too)
I have the same problem and is awaiting Nokias help desks response...
Have any of you solved this problem?
Purchased my Nokia 7 Plus in mediamarkt.de last week, so it's brand new. This crap bothers me though and it's my 3rd Nokia in a year. Has HMD turned Nokia into ****?

When it happens go into settings -> system-> about phone. That wakes up the navbar, but it will probably freeze again at some point.
I also have this since a few weeks (siince the update to pie).
Already tried Factory Reset and on advice of Nokia i tried Safe mode, but the last was a problem for me.
You only get real androidone, with only google apps.
So my token app (multifactor authentication for work and for private) where not available, just liek a few other needed apps.
I had to reboot again to go back to normal.
Now i have cleared the cache via a fastboot option, but did that this evening, so i have to wait again for locking up.
For others who want to try:
* Safe mode: Press power button until you see the power menu.
Press AND HOLD for 2 seconds the button Power Off and the system wil reboot to Safe mode
* Clear cache (it sounds strange, but seems to work):
1) Turn off the device
2) connect it to a power source using the original charger
3) Press and hold both power key and volume up key
4) When the android logo pop up, release the power key (keep holding the volume up key)
5) when the android alien laying of the floor appear release the volume key up
6) hold the power key and press one time the volume up key
7) use the volume keys to navigate and power key to select
8) select*run graphic test*-> yes
9) select reboot system now. Verify if it works properly.
During the clear cache actions, i got an error first, but the system then did the update again and worked (whatever update it was).

After using the phone for 48 hours now, without any problems with the button bar, i suppose that above actions did really solve this problem.
I can advise anyone with this problem, to try this solution (clear cache via Graphics test)
New Info:
Really to bad, 24 hours after writing the above, the button bar got stuck again.
But i could get it free via System Settings -> System -> About Phone
As told by another person in this thread.
I really thought the problem was gone.
Already informed Nokia/HMD Global about this.
