Does anyone have experience using a VPN on a T-Mobile Note 8 (or any other T-Mobile phone)? I'd like to be able to bypass their video-res restriction. Do they block (or throttle) VPN connections?

I use VPN all the time (not on note 8, but other phones), though not for streaming. No blocking/ throtteling on VPN connection for me so far.
I use TG with no issues.

I've searched many treads and also put up a few posting in the past.
I know Anyconnect is not available for the Xoom/Andriod OS at this time, but has anyone found an "easy" way to connect to a Cisco VPN system.
I was able to install certs as needed and tried a few workarounds, but no luck.
This is the a must have for me and I know a lot of others.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I was able to get my Cisco VPN to connect by rooting and using VPN Connections.

Thanks for the response...
Couple of questions
You mentioned rooted? Did you change kernel also?
3g or Wifi model? (I have Wifi)
When you say VPN connections, do you mean a app or the stock connect in the system?
Did you tranfer your certificates to the Xoom?
Sorry for all the questions. I've had a Gtab since November and just picked up a Xoom after holding out for a month.
Glad I made the purchase.....

I should mention the Cisco VPN I'm connecting to only uses grou passwords
I'm using the 3G model, and it is rooted with the tun.ko module available from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972550&highlight=tun.ko.
VPN Connections is a root app available from http://code.google.com/p/get-a-robot-vpnc/

The problem is, that the VPN Connection with anyconnect is totally unstable and with all the other Cisco VPN-concentrators its the same problem. That is the result of how android is programmed. i Tried to get a stable cisco-vpn connection on a nexus one, nexus s and optimus speed. All failed. You had to copy a tun.ko file, specific for the phone. then you where able to connect to a normal cisco vpn concentrator (not anyconnect concentrator). but that worked only once. every time after that, the vpn connection was so unstable i could only get it up for some secounds. thats why i bought an iPhone as smartphone and use the xoom as tethering.
what i want to try the next few days is, connect with the free iOS Any-Connect / VPN protocoll on the iPhone and then tether my xoom to use the same connection there. dunno if it will work

So far, that is the only way I can get a "connection." However, there does not appear to be any traffic going across the connection and VPN Connections hangs when I try to disconnect. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I've also had no luck connecting to my work VPN. We use Cisco Anyconnect and SecurID. The Cisco rep has been saying a client is in the works but nothing so far. This is the only think keeping the Xoom from really being a laptop replacement for me. Sucks.
Agreed!

I can't connect either but my setup is a little different. I log into Cisco SSL VPN Service through the website, which requires UN/PW/Group. When connecting for the 1st time on a device, it downloads and installs the VPN client. Through this method it performs:1)Platform Detection; 2)ActiveX; 3)Java Detection; 4)Sun Java; 5)Download & 6)Connected. But when signing in using my Xoom it hangs at step 5(Download). It displays a link, Linux i386, but it does nothing when clicking on it. Does anyone have this file or know a way around this?
The problem is google wont allow cisco into the kernal. The app is done at Cisco, but google is holding up the show. Cisco also has a new light weight vpn client that is more of an on demand app that will work with Jabber. (which works on xoom, i have it loaded)
What is the name of the light weight app that works on the Xoom?

if you flash the tiamat kernal and install the tun.ko you should be able to use the updated VPNC to connect just fine. i use my SecurID with this same setup and tunnel in daily for work. it sure does beat carrying a laptop around.
Also, Office chat is a office communicator app if your work uses it. basically i never have to carry a laptop around. I also use evernote. Onenote is great but evernote stores in the cloud and syncs to my phone, laptop, and xoom instantly will no setup necessary. Try it out.
Thanks for the tip Holsum. My Xoom isn't rooted yet but I'll investigate for my NexusOne which is already rooted and I'm very familiar with hacking on it. I'll give your suggestion a try and see if it helps.
When I run the vpn widget and test prerequisites it says that it doesn't have root. I am rooted running the newest tiamat kernel and the superuser app popped up and allows me to grant the app root... any idea why it thinks it doesn't have root?
Hi, I've searched for an answer but I didn't find anything relevant, so my questions is, can I create an wifi lan connection between two phones but without sharing the mobile data connection?

you mean then exchanging files through wireless, where the wireless LAN is established and maintained by the two phones and not by a 3rd device (router) ?
Exactly. But not only file exchange, I want rather to host a web-server on one phone and other phones can access it without having an internet connection.

I might be less informed than you, but then what is tethering about?
With tethering, the phone with WAN access (the tetherer) can share the internet to the phone without internet access (the tetheree)
It also shares the mobile data connection which I don't want. Maybe there is a way to start Wi-fi thetering without sharing the data connection?
Wi-Fi direct is what you are looking for, the bad news is that the sgs doesn't support it (to my knowledge).
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
Why not simply disable 'data' for mobile connection on server side?
Maybe you can control the corresponding traffic (port 80) with Droidwall.
I think this may be exactly what you want. It creates a local web server using the WiFi hotspot library so people can download files from your phone with a very to use QR system.

there are roms with wi-fi direct support. I was able using it with CM10
Thanks guys, I've solved it with the wi-fi hotspot option from cm10 & disabling the data connection.
And by the way, as a web-server I used Paw Server. It also supports PHP.
Is there a way to enable tethering on a Windows Phone 8 handset without having to pay the carrier? There was a hack for Windows Phone 7 that allowed this, but I'm not seeing anything for Windows Phone 8.
On WP7.X there are ROMS out there that have internet sharing but if you stream and use it offten your provider will eventually find out. I use mine to check email and to test VPN but i'm in and out; don't really surf or stream.

I am on Verizon and switched to the new plan (not unlimited data anymore since I needed to upgrade). If you are on a "limited" data plan the tethering is free and works perfect. Not sure about ATT.
As far as enabling it otherwise, on WP8 you can't until someone figures out an Interop-unlock or custom ROM.

This is something imposed by the carriers. If you get an international version phone, you won't have to pay them.
It also depends on which carrier you use. For instance, in my corner of the world, tethering drains away at your subscription's data connection, and if you exceed that you begin paying.

I would like to use my Chromecast on my company's wifi which users EAP 802.1x. Is there a way to configure the Chromecast to work? If not, does anyone know if Google plans to support EAP networks in the future?

I am wondering about the same thing here... Does anyone have a solution, or work-around to use Chromecast on EAP 802.1x?
This is the exact question that I have regarding the Chromecast. I've heard some people mention perhaps using Virtual Routers, but I'm not sure if it actually works or not.
I actually work for metroPCS and have been doing some testing. MetroPCS has a data cap on their hostpot for the unlimited plan. This cap is clearly rooted into the actual hotspot app on the phone. My question is, have any of you bypassed this by chance? I've tried disabling the teherguard via plist to no avail.
Also, I know this setting is part of the phone and can be completely bypassed for unlimited tethering. Using an ATT unlocked phone with metro allows unlimited tethering out of the box.
Well... Back when I had my t mobile Hercules (s2) I used all kinds of custom roms, and all of them had the same issue.. How metro limits us on hotspot is through the user agent on your device.. It can tell when you are using a tablet or computer. The only workaround for this that I know of is to change your user agent string. PC version of chrome and Firefox allow you to change the user agent to show up as an android device, I phone, I pad, and a few others instead of sending out the default one that a PC would.. When you change the user agent on the PC browser to mimic a mobile device, the protocol metro uses will be fooled. But of course, this will only give you unlimited hotspot through that particular browser.. You still won't be able to do other things like download windows updates. You will be limited to the particular browser you changed the user agent to. Hope that helps

I don't believe it works that way any more. Now once you've used over 7gbs it throttle down like plans that aren't on the unlimited would.

I use pda net from the play store for USB tethering. Speeds have never been slowed. I game online with my PC (Wi-Fi router is on the other side of the house) and it works great, the app is like 8 dollars though. But well worth it in my opinion

I've tried this, but my HTC literally hooks any third party tethering apps I use to the core hotspot that comes with the phone. Basically, using any other hotspot app will also enable the default hotspot after being enabled.

Still didn't work, just turned the core hotspot off. It says PDANet is still on but nothing is being broadcast wifi wise.

Try with USB tether and see if that works. I never use WiFi, just USB tether
Make sure that his tether usage is enabled
You have pda net installed on your computer too right?
there is app called fly vpn that can give u free access to 4g and 3g data for free
if you dont use the pda app on your computer, you must configure the reverse proxy to 192.168.46.1:8000
