Magnetic Mounts and Galaxy Notes - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I've read people claim magnetic mounts can cause permanent damage to the Spen functionality and some saying Samsung reps even claim it's bad.
Have any of you used magnetic mounts on your previous Note phones? Any advice?
Also, some say their Note phone is already magnetic and can stick right on a mount without a metal plate attached to a case, like normal. Any experience with that?
This seems like an important issue to work out!

I for one, wouldn't want to use wireless charging with a magnet on the back of my phone

I have used a magnet mount with my Note 5(the magnet is not on the device just a metal card for the magnet to grab onto). I experienced no problems with my S Pen as a result. You have to get a good one though. Some of the magnets are not strong enough to hold a big phone. I had one from MPOW that worked well.

It wouldn't be on the phone, but the case. I use TPU cases that come off rather easily, so if I do get and use a wireless charger, I'd have to remove the case prior to using it. Glad you brought that up! Thanks!

Good to know. I have a mount already and use the magnetic card thing and have it stuck to my Pixel case. I will need a new plate, however. I imagine they sell those separately.

I am using this and my wireless fast and normal charging works just fine.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GYPMECG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The magnetic piece is not a full magnetic plate but just an outer circular cutout that works pretty well. It also provides wireless charging on my S8+.

I use a 6-magnet spigen with my S8 w/o a plate and it would hold fine. But the Note8 fell off twice on this morning drive.

Been using the iottie magnetic vent clip on my Note8 since I opened it yesterday and haven't had any problems.

Does anyone know exactly where the charging coil is located on the Note 8? Any internal pics? If it is more towards the middle of the phone, then a metal plate may be used at the bottom of the phone to not interfere with charging, at least this is what i'm hoping for.

The only problem with the magnetic mounts is the wireless charging. They have a new Nano stick mount it comes in tomorrow from Amazon. I will test it and report back.

Because you have to have a piece of metal on your phone or on the case for it to work. The metal will block the wireless charging.

Have used a steelie mount on my previous note 5 for 6+ months, no problems at all. But no, you can't wireless charge because it keeps the phone to far away from the charger

Magnetic mounts and wireless charging do not play well together. Wireless charging is more important to me. Aside from that, all the "good" magnetic mounts I tried over the years were never strong enough to hold my phones for long. I buy larger phones.
I finally just bit the bullet a couple of years ago and bought Pro Clip mounts. They are not cheap but I'm not tossing them every 2 weeks for something better.

Got my Nano non magnetic mount in today and it works great. It feels like it is on a magnet. I live in New Orleans and the roads here are terrible and it never fell or moved one time. This is a good mount for those of us who want to use wireless charging. Got it on amazon look at my previous post.

My no date sticks to the magnet without even putting the metal plate in the case

Best mount ever! In stock at Amazon for $19.99 with free shipping. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IOQ3K6
Their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/imagnetmount
CNET's review: http://reviews.cnet.com/other-car-components/imagnet-mount-for-smartphones/4505-6730_7-35484776.html
The mount itself is magnetic and comes with a choice of 3 metal plates (2 with adhesive backing) to attach to your phone, which are thin enough to fit under the battery cover, case or on the back side of the device. The mount's suction cup is sticky so it even works on textured surfaces.
The magnet in the mount does affect the wacom pen, which does not respond in the 1.5 inch area in front of the magnet, so don't get this if you plan on using your S-pen with the mount. I mount mine in the car where I don't use the S-pen.
The arm has limited range so it's better suited for horizontal surfaces, but the ball joint is your standard 17mm size so it will work with different bases that have adjustable arms.
Free yourself from clamps and device-specific mounts! I highly recommend this mount. Now if they only made these with wireless charging..
Does the magnet affect the memory card?
No. My memory card works fine and so does the compass, GPS, bluetooth etc.
Superglue inside? No thanks.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
It comes with 3 metal discs. 1 plain and 2 with adhesive backing to stick on the back side of the device or inside of case.
I wanted a clean install so I opted to put the plain one behind the battery cover. The ones with adhesive didn't fit. It stays put without glue but I change my battery often so I just glued it. I was able to tear it off my S3 and reinstall it on the N2. I'm sure tape works fine.
This thing has been getting 5 star reviews. I usually don't recommend products that often but this one was worth it.
It looks slick too. I'll have to post some pics.
If only they had built wireless charging into it too
it is my understanding that the magnetic field would disrupt the working of the S-pan. can you confirm that the s-pen works with this magnet attached?

You sir are correct. I went out to test this and it seems that the S-pen does not respond in the 1.5 inch circle where the magnet is. It works fine elsewhere on the screen. I don't plan on using the S-pen in the car but this is good to know because I was going to get one to use as a desk dock.
Attached a some pics of the dock and phone. That Torque app is an app I'd recommend to any car enthusiast.
Here's a shot of the metal disc taped to the back cover.

The metal disk to fit inside the cover is just a metal plate that is not magnetized. The magnet is outside.
However, I would not recommend this. If you use it a lot, the metal plate will get magnetized over time and become a magnet itself, causing the compas to give false readings and it only takes a week magnet to cause this.
You can easily try this out yourself. Get a needle that is not magnetic. Then swipe a strong magnet along the length of the needle 10-20 times. Now you have a magnetic needle.
Doesn't that only happen to some metals? I've been using this mount for 3 months since I had my GS3 and the disc has not magnetized.
This mount was originally made for iPhones and the manual said it's safe for use on iPhones--that it won't scramble the components.
Anyways, I just wanted to recommend a product that has been a joy for me to use. I think that over time they'll come out with one that has wireless charging which would be sweet.

Maybe this magnet isn't powerful enough but they can cause the battery to raipidly discharge and overheat because of the metals inside the battery. I'd love this if it was like the Palm wireless charging..
I was looking up videos of this on youtube and one of the posts had a discount code for this on Amazon. I can't post the link.

No issues with GPS here. It only seems to affect the wacom pen.

Galaxy Note 2 Car Mount ? W/Electronics?

Hello all,
I know, not another car mount thread.... Well here's the scoop, like a good boy I read through every other thread I could find and it seems like there really isn't a good car mount that can hold the Galaxy Note 2, nor are there any that have charging cables or stereo out cables.
Is this true or is there a mount that can truly hold the GN2 (even with a case?) that might have charging / audio out capabilities? I just am looking for something rock solid that at least holds the darn phone in place on my dash.
I know that there are 2 mounts - one out there by Samsung (and their distributor) as well as the Iottie (link below) but both have a lot of reviews claiming that the phone really doesn't fit and isn't held in well by the mounts.

Well, for suction cradle I went for the Exogear Exomount 2.
For stand-plug cradle I went for Capdase RacerMount.
Both hold my Note2 with case snugly.
I can even find interesting friction mounts for up to 7".
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
i honestly love the iottie one, even with the folio flip cover from samsung. phone is held nice and snug, and the suction cup on it is none like I've ever seen. so god damn sticky that its like its 'glued' on but not. grips to any surface
I have the iottie and I think its awsome. The suction cup is amazing and will stick to pretty much anything, dash, console, wall of living room. Its impressive. Alittle 2 sticky when your trying to move it. It is also very flexable to the positoning that is available. It also will hold the device with any case or shell you can put on it. And the quick latch function is nice also... I highly recomend and like this mount
I have iOtttie as well. Yes, it's a real PITA get off the dash or windowshield. It's open enough that you have full access to all the ports. I've even recorded video with GN2 while in the dock.
Here's a crap video I shot with the GN2 in the iOttie dock:
you can see the section cup holder for the dock in the bottom right corner. The other upper left suction cup holds the satellite radio dock. Everyone wants to listen to NFL radio, LOL. Too bad I had the flash on, might have been able to see the van laying on it's side.
Does the Iottie allow for too much stress on the charging port?

Proclip Charging dock?
Hey guys, has anyone tried the Proclip car dock for this phone? I'm trying to figure out if it's USB 4 or 5 pin, so as to support audio and charging on one cable, I figured I just find an OTG cable to then plug into that and go from there.
Sorry about the URL workaround, seems that I need to post 10 times before being able to put an actual URL in, which is lame, so just replace the "DOT" with an actual "."

Well, a little late to this thread but I just got the ProClip unit for the Note 2 that works with the Otterbox Defender case. This is the second ProClip unit I've had. The first being for the EVO 4G. The phone fits into the holder perfectly but you might have to wiggle it around to get it to sit right.
The unit that holds the phone without a case may fit easier.
The one thing with the unit for the EVO 4G was it didn't put it into car mode. I found the unit for the Note 2 also doesn't go into car mode but I have been reading where that might be a problem with phone itself.

Has anyone tried this? Qi Wireless Charging Pad and Receiver Kit for Note 2

I kind of want to get one mainly because it does not need any tinkering with the device, just stick the receiver or position itself on top of the battery and close the back cover.
Device in the picture is the GS3 though the website says it's for the Note 2.

Yeah, works alright. Wireless charging is kinda limited to 600-700ma or if you tinker with some wires and solder you should be able to run around 1-1.1A of charging current.
To get wireless charging on the Verizon Note 2, you have to remove the back cover and solder 2 connectors or cut away the plastic concealing the 2 protectors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slD48Zm_uBM&feature=youtube_gdata_player.

I have that but with the "Input: 5v -- 1000mA" model and it works like a charm with n7105. I understand that there is very thin 2013 model (color green) of the receiver that fits better than the one that we have. Just stick it at the back, secure the two metal connectors with tape so that it would continuously stick to the metal connectors of the phone, and it'll work.

I'm with you on wanting a new battery door. I hate the slight bulge on the back the charger coil creates. It doesn't affect the functionality but I'm a bit OCD so the fact that my phone is wobbly on a flat surface bothers the heck out of me.

Works fine with the AT&T version of Note 2, a bit slowly ofcourse. I sorta stopped using it after a while cos.. the phone seemed to need to slign quite well with the charging pad, and I'm used to picking up the phone a couple of times at night to see the time or web browse (only kidding)... and if you don't replace the phone properly on the pad, it wouldn't charge...
In the end, I realised plugging in the mini USB just before going to bed isn't as big a deal as I thought it was when I was ordering the wireless charging pad.!!

Car mounts - any available?

Hi Fellas,
I'm looking for an "official" car mount which will fit the unit snugly for my international version D802.
The universal ones tend to have thick sponges at the sides and our devices have ultra thin bezel which gets covered
Any leads?

I thought you were talking about the wireless charging. Yah, its odd the dock doesn't come with a charger.
I'm still using my OwlPad wireless charger from my DNA days, but I don't connect the charging portion. Fits every variety of phone that I've had snugly!

It's not an official car holder, it's a universal one. But I've been so impressed with it on all my phones, it's worth a shot. Fits the g2 nicely and doesn't cover the bezel. Great customer service too.
http://www.kenu.com/products/airframe
I'm also hoping for a car mount real quick, as I'm going on vacation in a week and a half, and barring any sudden change, will be using my LG G2 (come on, Tuesday...) to nav. Worse comes to worse, I'll get a universal one. For my GS II, I'm using one made for, I think, the Motorola Atrix. A couple of years ago, AT&T had this great deal where you buy the desktop dock for 16 bucks and get the car mount for a penny.
Would really be nice if they put the wireless charger in the car mount.. then no wires that you have to fool with hooking up once you put it in there...
Surely I can't be the only person that can think of these things..

Hi found some mounts for g2 :
Check out them may be you find something interesting there....
Radio Transmitter car mount for G2
Car mount with charger for G2
Thanks
Now the wireless car dock actually sounds useful. Too bad I have att: ( otherwise I don't see the big deal in putting your phone on a large pad that takes up space and has to be plugged in anyway. Now if they can build it into the arm of my couch or surface of my desk we got something good. Wireless furniture chargers.

I'm a little partial to the big, clunky mounts with beanbag bases, so this caught my eye. It's looks more like a general mount, even though the site mentions the G2 in the product title. Considering I really need one for vacation, I may go with this. http://www.shopandroid.com/arkon-we...ash-mount-and-slim-grip-holder/3A78A10703.htm
If anyone has any other ideas or found a more specific solution, I'm definitely listening.

Hi Fellas,
I'm looking for an "official" car mount which will fit the unit snugly for my international version D802.
The universal ones tend to have thick sponges at the sides and our devices have ultra thin bezel which gets covered
Any leads?

The G2 fits very nicely. You must press it firmly onto the USB connector (on right in picture) or you will get an error that says the phone cannot be charged.

I happen to find this particular one at my local tech mall:
http://shipi.com/easy-one-touch-car-mount-universal-car-mount-fits-most-smartphones.html
The claws are thin enough not to cover the screen and the one touch function is awesome. I just need to "drop" my device into the mount and it will clip itself as there's a button that will trigger the claws to snap. :good:
I went by a local VZ store yesterday to check if they had the official dock. They did not. However, I did find that the Samsung Universal Navigation Mount holds the phone quite nicely and still allows access to the USB & headphone jacks as well as the camera out above the mount. At $30 online, I think that's the way I'll go.

Now this looks interesting. Does the phone still slow charge? Have you tried it with GPS running or music running with the screen on? Does it drain faster than it charges?
Thank for any answers you can provide!
Does the back come off? Haven't gotten mine yet.
I'd like to use one of these, but don't want to stick anything on the outside of the case.

Magnetic back

I can confirm without anything out of the box you can mount the s7 edge on your magnetic mount.
I have an s5 and i stick a metal in the back cover for my magnetic mount in my car out of curiosity i tried it against my mount it stick around the middle part of the back.

Does it interfere with your signal or other functions? I think I'd rather be safe and put the metal plate inside my case. I have a magnetic mount too, so I've been curious about this.

I may be stupid but I'm pretty sure there isn't anything in your phone that would be effected by magnets.
On a desperate but related note, what difference would a metal plate make, other then to possibly interfere with signal penetration into the device?

Doesn't the wireless charging use magnetism?

Does it hold well enough that you would trust it going over bumps and what not?

There is magnetic field sensors:

Wouldn't expect it to mess up that sensor, but I just realized it might trip the hall sensor (making it think a cover closed so it would turn off the screen)

Hmm just had a look for a magnetic car holder this would be very good if it does not fall off easily

Kind of. It uses the fact that an AC current causes a fluctuating magnetic field which can then be picked up by a second conductor and turned back to AC current.
Easy to understand explaination

While the information contained in the links is mostly correct (though extremely sparse). The one thing wireless charging wl do to harm your I is heat it up. Usually it's not a concern for naked phones though.
Magnetic fields we're talking about should not effect modern electronics. The CPU and memory (RAM and ROM) don't use magnetic fields, nor would the small fields used to hold things together cause EMP like symptoms (both because they are small and stable.)

This should be useful for my taxi. Now all I need is a magnetic mount... and a s7 edge.

Good to know... I never liked putting my phone in front of my vents though. It gets cold in Columbus that would block the heat. lol I just have a gps mount that I can put my phone in. I have it so it's snug enough that it won't fall out and that I can just grab and go without unlocking it. The only downside is the it's a big mount. I just have no place to put my phone and on the dash is the best place so you still kind of have your eyes on the road using GPS.
