Just in case any of you don't like the fixed status bar you can still hide it with the old shell commands, to bring it back for a few seconds just swipe down from the top.
I did on my S8+ and just tried on the Note 8 and it works fine. No Root needed

Is there a way to permanently disable navigation bar and use swipe gestures instead? (I don't mean hide the navbar, because it appears when you try to use swipe gestures). I love the immersive mode but constant need to bring the bar back is pretty annoying. I would greatly appreciate if anyone would suggest a way!
If you dont want to go through all this you can use Nova launcer and just choose the option to hide the status bar, it will only appear if you swipe down from the top

This is for immersive mode system wide, you will not see the status bar in all apps too.

I LOVE immersive mode but doing it this way is too buggy for me to enjoy
Causes lag dragging the notification bar down and also bugs out in lots of apps (facebook/whatsapp/MEGA) etc
I have a better idea:
download the "Tiles" app from the play store, it has immersive mode option to be turned on and off from the notification panel, added as a tile. run this adb command "adb shell pm grant com.rascarlo.quick.settings.tiles android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS" then you can set it to ask you to turn off everything or different component. You can still swipe up. Also, you can only turn off status bar. etc.
Also, I am personally using the PIE controls app form the play store instead of the gestures since I am unrooted. Works well.

Yes that is. If you swipe up it will appear otherwise it doesn't show.
Is there any way to permanently hide it? I don’t want it coming back when swiping up. Want to replace it with pie.
Is there a way to get a gesture that let's me swipe up to go to home from and screen?. Like webos, Nokia and blackberry 10 had?
I'm trying to find the opposite option. I have a few apps that use immersive mode, but can't use the full screen, leaving annoying black bars. Is there a way to disable immersive mode for these apps so I can keep the navbar and status bar visible?

The app SystemUI Tuner by Zachary Wander, has Immersive Mode. In that category for it you can blacklist app to not use Immersive Mode.

Are you looking for a setting to switch back to the original tw launcher or for use in the nova launcher? To set touch whizz as the default launcher just go to nova settings and it's the first option, select touch whizz, switch the screen of and use the twisting arm wake gesture to select home. If you're looking at changing the nova settings it might be an idea to reflash null and not check full ui in the aroma options. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for though. It's a bit late here and I'm a bit frazzled

I'm in the TouchWiz launcher / shell, which is nice. No issue there. My problem is I two-finger tapped or double-tapped the screen to try gestures, and the status bar appeared at the top, showing the battery %, time, Bluetooth icon, etc. I now have no way to make this status bar disappear at the top. For example, I see it when I'm in Settings, or in the root browser, or any custom app.
It seems the two-finger tap toggled it on, but there is no way to toggle it off. Where is the setting to turn it off?

That's not the two finger toggle. The two finger toggle on stock or null without full system ui is a shortcut to brightness/volume and battery screen. Sounds like you've selected full system ui in the aroma settings. I can't see any options to switch off the status bar in apps. You can turn it off on the nova launcher with nova settings but that doesn't apply to apps. You can try flashing the Rom again and uncheck the full status ui and see if the status bar is still present in third party apps or you can download another third party app to control things like the status bar in apps. There's a list of third party apps you could use in the help sticky null_/free falling theme..... It's under notifications icons/soft buttons

If you on Pie and using navbar you cannot hide it anymore.
Samsung has taken that option away.
You have to basically use the swipe gestures.
However if you use, certain apps like
eg
Shortcutter Quick Settings (Play Store)
I just tested it now, yes then you can hide navbar.
or maybe some Bixby remapper can do it.?
I however use the swipe actions .
Takes a bit, to get use to it,
but i now prefer swipe to navbar, as it seems pretty obvious
Samsung is "forcing" you to opt for
swipe.?
I've got a feeling that Samsung will drop navbar all together for swipe. (at some stage. or later ?)
Good luck.

I used systemui tuner.
*edit* I only hide the navbar, I leave status bar. The only thing i've noticed however is that it won't work with stock launcher. Using any other launcher it will hide. I guess we will have to wait until developers update their apps to work with samsung. Same thing happened on my essential phone. had to wait till devs fixed the screen resolution cause of the notch.

this makes your device full immersive mode permanent.
Full Time - Immersive Mode
(Permanently hide status and nav bar, restart device afterwards)
Code:
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.status=*

Immersive manager
Good day.
I use immersive manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivianuu.immersivemodemanager), because it has 2 modes, 'global immersive' and 'per app immersive'. So i can choose which apps use immersive mode.
It can be activated through ADB with a PC.

Go to Settings/Display/Full Screen Apps and change the setting for the offending apps to Full Screen (default is auto). If that doesn't work, then perhaps the apps that are giving the issue don't support it.
I have all of my apps set to full screen and none of them are full screen... I have even used the adb command and all it does is remove the status bar info but I am still stuck with the bar.

Not sure what you have going on, then. The version of chrome that came on the phone is working fine for me in immersive mode. Granted, all that it does is color the top of the screen with the color theme of whatever site I'm on. But, it's definitely not putting a black bar there. So far the apps I've tried, and work: Chrome, Yahoo, Discord, Sync. You sure you don't have "hide front camera" option enabled in the full screen settings?
You are right the bar changes color with the color theme of the website. But i'm looking for a way to remove it. I've tried in settings and with immersive manager via adb and I didn't succeed at the moment.

For me, both the nav/status bar hide when I am in immersive mode. I used Immersive mode manager and it worked fine. Right now just using Button Mapper by Flar2 to map the bixby button to it.
That looks like you are in gesture mode, not immersive mode. I actually prefer gesture mode. Swiping up just to get the bar is a pain.
Does anyone know a method to remove the tinting from the status bar? Making it the same colour as the app headers or even transparent with the background?
After the update to Android Pie, I realized I can't hide the Navigation bar anymore (in order to use hand gestures using "One Hand Operation +) .
I was able to at least apply ADB immersive mode to all my apps. However, that doesnt get rid of the navigation bar on my home screen.
I was hoping someone can suggest a good supplemental app that specifically focuses on removing the navigation buttons from my home screen. I've tried a couple Nav bar removal apps. However, they seem to still focus on immersive mode and adding white lists to immersive mode only.
I would appreciate any useful suggestions.
You should be able to hide navigation bar simply by changing to full screen gestures in Settings. If it doesn't it could due to earlier customisation. See if you can revert it back to default. Also wipe cache partition helps with issue after the updates
Yep, just enable full screen gestures and the nav bar will be gone and stay gone
Thanks. Yes, that's the first thing I did, until I quickly realized that I didn't like the native full-screen gestures capabilities of Pie. One Hand Operation + does a MUCH better job for gestures IMO.

Download full screen gestures by xda, give it adb permission and you can safely hide the nav bar (make sure to have it enabled first). Hope it helps
Thanks. The full-screen gestures app from XDA doesnt support lanscape mode, at least when I tried it. That's why I switched to One Hand Operation +" which does gestures very well. I'm already using the ADB to enable immersive mode to auto-hide the navigation bar.

I agree. I use full screen gestures to hide nav bar but only actually use One Hand Operation+ for gestures
I'm glad you brought that up. This is exactly what i attempted to do. However, for some reason, Pie Full-Screen gestures will break One Hand Operations + "Right handle" in landscape mode after enabling it for a little while. It looks like a conflict of some kind.
Could you please test One Hand Operations + in Landscape mode WHILE Pie Full-screen gestures is also enabled? The right handle stops working for after a little while of use. I really wish I could figure out a way for both of them to run without conflicts in Landscape mode.
I dont think this happens in One Hand Operations Portrait mode.

Huh. You are right. I almost never use landscape so hadn't noticed ...
Weird issue. Will hooefully be fixed in a future version of OHO+
Thanks for confirming. I don't think I can count on OHO+ ever fixing this bug... since there's no good way to report this bug to the developers.
I probably would be okay with using the native Pie fullscreen gestures. However, oddly it doesn't have haptic feedback for some reason.

You can also try the oneplus gestures app on the play store, you give it adb permission, hide the nav bar, but at the same time keep the oneplus gestures disabled, I'm sure it can work for you
Thanks for the tip. The One + Gestures app looks very similar to the XDA Navigation Gestures app.
There's also an app on the Play Store called, Hide Navigation Bar that ONLY hides the navigation bar using the same technique via ADB without any extra features I won't use.
Does anyone have any experience using the above apps' technique via ADB to hide the Navigation bar on the Note 9? To be honest, I'm a little nervous to try this method to hide the Navigation bar; since there are warnings of unpredictable results for certain features on Samsung hardware... like hiding the last row of pixels of the Navigation bar. It would be good to know from someone who's already tried this on their Note 9 what issues to expect. Also, I'm curious if there's any chance I could irreversibly break an OS component on my phone.
EDIT: I finally tried Hide Navigation Bar. It worked perfectly on my Note 9. I think it might be the only app that hides the navigation bar completely WITHOUT trying to add it's own gesture support. this allows me to use my favorite gestures app, One Hand Operation + (which uses edge gestures, even in landscape, instead of trying to do it the way iphone does).
The only minor issue is that the area that used to be the navigation bar cannot be used for app icons on the home screen. However, in applications themselves, that area is completely useable.

I am using an app called Hide Navigation Bar to hide the white bar, which works great. I tried to use xda's Navigation Gestures for the same purpose but it does not work well in fullscreen landscape game, while Hide Navigation Bar does. That being said, I hope ASUS can implement an official hiding gesture hint feature just like what Samsung does.
I'm using the "adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural" command to re-enable gestures in Nova Launcher, but it's not a perfect solution and resets to standard navigation when the phone reboots.

Im using these two apps and I can say my experience is even better than what I had on a9 because now I can cboose different options and actions for my gestures
Xda navigation gestures, to hide the navbar (other apps I have tried didnt work) it also has the issue when using the phone in landscape mode the volume control bar goes out of the screen
