Lag when playing HDR videos in YouTube - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So I've watched a few 4K videos, and I've watched a few 4K 60 frames per second videos, and both of those seem to work pretty well on this unlocked Note 8. However when I actually try to watch the HDR videos I get some pretty significant lag and choppiness, even when watching 1080p HDR. Does anybody else see this happening on their device?

You're not the only one
I too am having an issue in YouTube on the Note 8 wherre anything played back above 720p60 HDR becomes super slow and unwatchable in terms of something thats supposed to be 60fps. If you stick to 720p60 HDR for now you won't have that problem. Hopefully Google pushes out an update for YouTube asap

LG V30 stutter at 1080p HDR and above
I am experiencing the same problem too, my New LG v30 has the same issue. My internet speed is over 200mbps and I experience lag like crazy. I called Google about it and they said it is an issue on several devices and should be fixed in the coming months.

I have the same problem. Huge lag and audio sync lag when viewing videos in HDR

US unlocked note 8 , and no troubles here watching HDR. No lag or stuttering. Can you link a specific video and I can try that and let you know what happens.

View in 2160p and you'll get lag on HDR video, including voice and video sync issues.

Ok, unless I am doing something different, I still can not get it to stutter or have audio sync issues. I have watched Marco polo on Netflix that is supposed to be 4khdr. I have watch almost all 4k Samsung demos on you tube. I have 100 mbps internet going to a 5ghz wireless router, and sir about 20 ft from it. I can't find the setting in Netflix app to set 2160p , but can find settings in YouTube. I will keep trying.

In youtube you should see 2160p hdr settings otherwise no real hdr i think

That being said.. some can really tell...it could be me. I think WIFI and things running in back ground can effect it.. duh.. But I don't get lag. US unlocked SnapD

I've watched that video just now (plus other 4K HDR videos on YouTube) in 1440p settings and I get zero lag anywhere. I've got an exynox Indonesian Note 8, watching on a WiFi connection that is originally only 30mbps then routed through a tp-link powerline router (max 10mbps).

I watched this video , smooth as silk. Wonderful video, love all of the snakes , but frame rate was smooth, nothing choppy or laggy. I only had the option up to 1440p , and that is what I watched it in.

No lag on this video but i dont see it being indicated as HDR just 1440P, I think we might need to add more details when testing. I suggest everyone who claims smooth/stuttery enable stats for nerds on youtube and make sure to report if the video format shows 2560x1440 ( as sometimes youtube will still display 1080p even if you have 1440p selected ) and then mention if its 1440p, 1440p HDR or 1440p60 HDR.
A good example is to try this video and make sure video format shows 2560x1440

There is a very minor stuttering especially if you are sensitive to it, I asked someone do a blind test on me on a random scene on the clip and 10/10 I was able to tell it correctly. The stuttering is not buffering related. But Im glad that you are not sensitive to the stuttering. I was able to also test this 4 snapdragon variants and 2 on exynos all of which had same results. I think this is a bug on the player as it only stutters when playing in full screen.

Exynos India version and yes, even i observed this stuttering last night. Its quite annoying though. Let me know if you guys find any solution.

It has to say 1080 HDR or 1440 HDR for the stutter if it does not say HDR then you are not watching at the same quality as us with the issue.

Watched it after I turned on nerd stats , 1440p60hdr setting, and sorry to report, it was quite smooth. The colors were vibrant and scenes with the sunlight were quite realistic.

[Q] Video - Slow Motion quality

Question guys - to enable you to slow certain scenes in a video you need to select the slow motion video scene...fair enough.
Should this in turn reduce the quality of the video?
I could be wrong, but before I went to a custom ROM, I am fairly sure the video quality remained the same as normal. Now as soon as I record in slow motion, it reduces the quality.

yes it will reduce the quality ...

I noticed that too with mine. Horrible isn't it? You also get reduced quality with 60fps. You get verticals lines. I gave up and stuck to 30fps.

Slow Motion = Low Resolution
I saw that HTC video doing a slow motion video of a man doing fire/flame stunt. Actually I was amazed and got excited that I wanted to try that Slow motion on my own with something else like a sprinkler maybe.
So I found one at a park and as soon as I started shooting the video (slow motion video under video settings) WTH!!!! The resolution dropped to something like 768x432 and its a bite pixellated, not true HD (1080p) which I thought I'd expect just like from the HTC video... Yes you can trim/edit the video that's cool but I was hoping for 1080p HD quality
I hoped HTC would come with an update that can maximize its camera features up to 1080p resolution. oh well..

Well I guess is impossible because the Snapdragon 600 doesn't support the record of 1080p videos at 120fps :\
I'm on stock 4.2.2 and I've recorded this slow motion clip a week ago (don't forget to turn on HD when viewing it). The quality seems fine to me.
Yeah. The quality is awfull. The slow motion video from the the device with the man in the night eith fire from his mouth is years ahead bettrr than the ones we can record... But why HTC ?!

some info on this please?
hello guys. i'm sorry for this little derailing question but it was the only thread i found:
i'm currently digging into slo-mo available in latest phones.
i just saw some HTC ONE samples and i was very disappointed from the low resolution.
i was particularly impressed with the new Iphone 5S 120 FPS real 720P feature. it really looks 720 and not upscaled like the fake 720p NOTE 3 slo-mo. however i cannot use iphone anymore due to the small screen.
so from this thread i gather the faster frame limitation is by the processor itself? (snapdragon 600-800? what's the 720P limit?)
i am willing to wait until an Android phone will have a usable 720 slo-mo..
so what hardware could provide this? as i can see nowdays, the latest android phones cannot do it (not the NOTE 3 or the G2 which doesn't even have slo-mo to begin with).
my choice now are either wait for a phone that will (maybe the next HTC?), or wait till apple make a bigger phone (cannot stand the small screen).
your thoughts on this?
thanks.

[Q] Slow motion video

What specs does the N6 offer in turns of slow motion video capturing?
Bump. I have the same question. Seems that none of the reviews explored the camera settings. Any update on this?
Everything I have seen has said that it takes video at 30fps
As far as I know, slow motion requires more frames per second. So I'm thinking that's a no on slow-mo. I could be wrong though.
The only spec i see is 4k @30fps.
I hope the stock camera app will allow for 1080P or 720P at either 60, 120, or 240fps. This is really a make or break decision for me, but seeing as though there are no frame rate specs for the other resolutions yet I will probably just have to buy it and see. I'm sure the devs will have at it if it does not come factory, although I hope it comes stock.
I found this quote at techtimes.com, If true I hope for at least 720p @60fps+
"The Google Nexus 6 uses a 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS (opitcal image stabilization), dual-LED flash, autofocus, 4K video recording @ 30 fps, 1080p video @ 30 fps, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera."

The snapdragon 805 is capable of slow motion video. Even if it isn't available out of the box, which I kind of suspect it will be, I wouldn't be surprised to see some enterprising developer figure out a way to make it happen.

Agreed. Since the api allows for developers to gain access to it like never before I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see it. If I'm not mistaken the one plus one phone has slowmo recording and it uses the same camera. It's just something that needs to be implemented in the software.

Even the reviewers in many of the reviews that came out yesterday seemed surprised at how basic the camera app on the N6 is. RAW capture is the big new thing with L but the camera app doesn't capture it. Either Google has a big update in store or developers will find their own way. There have already been numerous example improvements shown with lcamera.
Anyone with a device in hand yet try any 3rd party camera apps?
You have to remember the guy who posted about the api'$ and taking raw pics it was with nexus 5 and a camera app he wrote ... won't be long b
efore some apps have it though i am sure
Here is his git hub so his camera can be used
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera/
Here is the write up
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-5-lollipop-camera-api-samples-540858/
since it has the same camera as the one plus, would installing the camera apk from it possibly bring slowmo recording or will it have to be written into the frame working?

Double Bump. The answer to this question is what will decide whether I buy a nexus 6 or a note 4.
---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 PM ----------
Can someone with a nexus 6 try the app 'Open Camera' by Mark Harman (hopefully not the actor ) and hit the settings (gear) icon, Photo and video settings, Video frame rate, change it to 60 or 120 and then record a video. In theory this should bump the video up to a higher frame rate and then playback should be slow motion. Just a guess here but it is worth a try. Also I doubt this app is using the new 5.0 APIs so it may not be a true test.
Edit: better yet try this app that is designed for the 5.0 API. https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera

Cool suggestion; just tried the Open Camera app and video recorded at 720p with 120 FPS enabled but the playback appeared normal on device. I'm going to try and run the video on my PC and see if I can find if it actually recorded in 120. I'll also try that other app and get back to you.

Netflix Test Patterns

I was messing around in the Netflix app and came across the Test Patterns Videos. After much frustration I couldn't get Netflix to play back any of the test patterns in 1080p and the highest it will play back is 1280x720. The crazy thing is my Note 4 will play back the test patterns in 1080p without any problems on the same internet connection.

Beside the Note 8 is certified for HDR playback on Netflix and you can't have HDR without 1080p or higher video resolution.

I don't believe this is a bandwidth issue.
It seems to be a server side issue. For some reason Netflix is not letting Note 8 playback 1080p even though it's one of the few devices listed on their site that supports HDR playback.
I appreciate everyone's help. Now I know I'm not going crazy.

hdr video in youtube flickering

I have been watching hdr video in YouTube and my note 9 has been flickering between normal brightness and the the boosted brightness that usually occurs when you watch hdr video. My note 9 is the Verizon model on the most recent firmware as of 8/27/18. Does anyone else have this problem?
Seems to be an issue with Auto brightness.
Manually set max brightness and disable auto and the flickering stopped for me.
Looks like a minor bug in either the youtube app or the internal HDR handling.
Doesnt always do it to me though, i've switched to Youtube Vanced as my main youtube and i havent seen it do it.

Ah okay. I don't use auto brightness. When the HDR video starts, my screen brightness jumps up because I keep it at 50% but the video plays without flicker in both dark and light areas.

Same here, the screen is flickering when watching HDR videos in the dark. Auto brightness on/off doesn't change anything, still flickers. In daylight no problem.
yeap, noticed it too watching a video in a very dark room when I got my Note 9 on the 6th of September. i sent them feedback via the Samsung members app but they just sent some generic response back. Seems to go away when the light sensor is covered with a finger.
Yes, here too, but only in a dark room.

This is NOT normal or "the nature of the ****ing beast" is completely wrong and ****ed up..... Needs fixing!!! (By the way, don't take it personally last guy comment, just frustrated and talking about hardware on a phone, nothing personal)

Alright,ok... SMH.
Download the video in question and play it with the Samsung video app or MX player and see if it flickers or not.
Also there are many posts about about this not unique to just Samsung or the note 9, Google " hdr video flickering" , good luck .

So... As always online, you never get the answer you're looking for...
You don't actually say what you mean... So, are you saying the problem is a YouTube app problem/bug? Or what...... What is it
Are you guys using a screen protector as some seem to interfere with the auto brightness I had the same problem on my so plus and on the xperia xz premium I took the screen protectors off and it seemed to stop
It has to be the YouTube app as I've been watching 4k HDR 60fps using chrome desktop mode and no signs of flickering
No Issues on My AT&T Note9 at all just tried 6 different HDR and works perfectly!
