[Q] Bitesms replacement

hello fellas, finally got my lg thrill, coming over from an iphone 3gs. i was wondering thoughts on sms replacement app? i was suing bitesms with my iphone and it did everything i needed. any good suggestions for an android replacement app?

Handsent is pretty cool. But I prefer the stock SMS app.

GoSms pro (its free, dont let the pro fool you). It can be setup to mimick the iphone ui (bubbles) or set up to mimick the stock sms ui (list). But my favorite feature is that it has an option to stay locked in memory so that it opens instantly when you need it. That feature to me is what seperates it from the rest of the sms apps out there.

I like GoSMS as well but am unfamiliar with that feature. I've just browsed through all the settings and didn't see it. Where's it and and whats it called?
EDIT: so I found an option that allows it to "run persistently" which is probably what your talking about. Mine's always been enabled and it still takes a second to launch every time I use it. I guess it would take longer if it was disabled. Having said that I used Handcent for a while and it was 10x faster, just uglier and didn't have an option to disable native SMS notifications so I was getting double notification even if I went and turned off notification in the native SMS app. I can handle a second delay when opening Go over the drawbacks of Handcent.

Ok looks like I have a few options to look at. Now to get my mind to want to keep the droid over the iPhone. I'm finding it a bit strange to get used to

I came from an iPhone as well. Give it a few days, or weeks. It takes a bit to get used to the Android but when you do there are things I wouldn't trade for the world.

I just have gotten so used to the feel of my iPhone over the last 3 years. I'm thinking I'll give it a week or so as I have 30 to return it. Just seems clumsy the way things are set up. I don't have a dock for more than 4 apps, it doesn't open to an apps screen, I have to scroll for them. Finally figured out how to turn off the key pd vibrate thing. That was annoying me to death.

You might want to give ADW launcher a try. It has a dock feature aswell as a page style app menu. Where you can slide the page of apps left to right. YouTube should have a demo of it in action. Its a very personalizable Launcher. You can even get a apple theme for it.

Thats one of the great things about android, you can make it look and function however you want. Youre not stuck with the the way the phone comes. I cant stand the stock lg launcher either but there are tons of replacements out there.

Coming from Android with a few questions...

I just ordered a HTC 8x (keeping my 32gb SIII for now) from Verizon and had a few questions. I have not used a Windows phone since my HTC TP2 - which I loved until the HTC Incredible came out. Is there an app that allows WiFi tethering - like FoxFi? I don't use it all that much but when I travel it is nice. I am grandfathered in to unlimited so the tiered plans are not an option. I also use mass txt messages several times (13 team members) a week and I am currently using GoSMS to do it. I am hoping there is a similar app that allows mass txting on Windows Phone OS - stock would be great. Does the wireless charging system use more power than the traditional hard wired cables?

On WP8 only way to tether (I could be wrong) is to pay carrier extra fee. I am waiting on another option as well, and as far as mass text you can do that in the groups setting I send out text to 16 people at a time for basketball games and such. And the room feature seems to be nice but I haven't used it yet. There is also http://xyo.net/lumia/ which will tell you what apps are somewhat equivalent.

WP8 -- in settings has an option for internet sharing (no app needed) that provides up to 5 other devices (at least on my 920 with AT&T). I assume that this is a general option in WP8 ...
I have the shared data plan that allows tethering, so I am not sure if networks need to have it allowed in order to use it ...
But, the option is there without the need of an app ...

wi-fi tethering is a built-in feature in WP8 (since WP7.5) - it's called "internet sharing". i have no problem with at&t, using my nokia 920 as a wi-fi AP for my notebook and my ms surface rt. i can even go remotely to my work computer through VPN.
you can create a group, adding anybody from your contacts. after that you can send email or text sms to all the contacts from this group - just by one click.
and yes, you don't need any additional applications for these features.

i've been a t-mobile customer, and now i'm an at&t client. i didn't pay anything additional for using my phone as a modem (through bluetooth or wi-fi, whatever) and i'm not paying now. the only payment you should be aware of - for the data, you use. i subscribed to a data shared mobile plan in at&t - $90/mo for 6Gb shared data (plus unlimited voice and text) for up to 10 (i believe) lines (i use 4) plus $35/mo per device. i pay $225/mo for 3 smartphones and 1 simple phone. we've never overlimited our 6Gb plan. though if you do, it costs $15/1Gb.
the room is a cool feature, but it works only for WP-phones. but as i said you can group your contacts to be able to email or text all of them by one click.

I think on Verizon unless I am on the Share all plan I am not allowed to use the wifi/bluetooth tethering. At least without an app like FoxFi. Speaking of contacts... how are they managed on WP8? I will go out on a limb and say iCloud is definitely out and probably so is Gmail... hope its that easy.

The 6Gb data share plan (for families, or 5Gb for individual) is needed to enable tethering with AT&T ...

Gmail is seamless, and so are your contacts if they're synced with Google.

I'm sorry man...but why the hell would you ever leave the gsIII for any other phone period? All the things you need are on Android and the gsIII.

While the SIII is a great device it is NOT the end all of phones. There are still plenty of force closes and lock ups on the device. I am just wanting to try something different and I have been looking forward to WM8 for a long time. Here's hoping.

the only way to avoid lockups is turning off these phones.

I don't think I've had a lock up or app crash on Windows Phone. They were all too common on iOS though.
But can we leave all the playground arguments over best platform to some other forum? they're only phones at the end of the day.

You're the first person in this thread to mention best platform, no one is arguing.

Crashes are present in Windows Phone as well, but are less obvious as the system simply closes down the app without saying a word.
In most cases, crashes are due to the poorly written app and not the system.
Although I have a killer wifi and university that restarts my phone lol.

After reading several of your posts, I still can't figure out if you are a WP8 supporter or not.
Either way, I have been on Android for my entire cell phone career for several years and most recently had the GS3. I can't even tell you how many force closes I have had from apps, lag and slowdown because of horrible resource management of the OS, dalvik cache slowdown, etc. I rooted all of my devices and was heavily into the technical side of things.
I never had an iPhone but have played with many. Never was my cup of tea, but I won't talk bad about it since I simply don't know enough.
I finally grew tired of it all and purchased a HTC 8X last week. I can tell you that WP8 OS is such a breath of fresh air coming from Android. There is absolutely no lag or slowdown whatsoever....ever. I can pop in and out of apps, do whatever I want and it constantly stays smooth. No ram dumps or reboots required. I also have not had a single force closed app or random reboot like some people have reported. It has been an absolute flawless experience so far.
Just thought I would post some positive energy after a lot of negative. Is WP8 a lot more simple than Android? Yes. Is it a bad thing? No. It's such a seamless and smooth experience that I'm not sure I can' go back to Android at this point. At least not for a while. YMMV.

I'm not being defensive at all. Just stating my opinion based on your quote. The other reason why I quoted you is that I've seen you all throughout this WP8 forum sort of talking down on WP8. Just curious as to why and which side you are on. Not saying you have to pick a side or you can't talk down on WP8, but just curious.

A ton of folks are, enjoy it. Don't take this stuff seriously, it's just a phone at the end of the day.

[Q] Lag in scrolling

I am new to android. I switched from iphone 5 to moto x. I got the fone yesterday and having some serious problems. Scrolling especially in facebook is very laggy. Browser is ok but facebook app is terrible. Its not the same case in iphone 5 where its buttery smooth. So my doubt is, is the fb app lags same on all android phones or just the moto x? even i will get ocassional hiccups on twitter. Is it normal. Can it be optimized by tweaking any settings? I love the phone but this thing sucks

As someone who has always greenified facebook before, is the beta FB app worth it over the normal one?

I've honestly not worried about apps or syncing or shutting off anything. This phone lasts ALL day for me with NOTHING turned off.

the most recent beta has been working flawless for me. however the ones before it had issues. beta is beta, just like nightlies. sometimes you get a bad one.

I generally don't care about facebook notifications because I'm not a terribly active user. Most notifications are a few friends that post way more than they should and I could care less so I turn them off. Because i dont need the notifications, I generally always greenified it.

Welcome to android. Scrolling in third party apps is rarely smooth on android. My iPhone 5 is flawless in that regard. It's because on android, app developers don't have to follow strict standards like on ios. Tweaking will not really help with the Facebook app. Source: tweaking both android and ios for 2 years.
You will notice quite a few android users will flat out deny any lag in an effort to defend their purchase decision. Just something I've noticed.

facebook app sucks, try just using your browser it will be much quicker and less of a battery hog. You can always set a bookmark on the browser and add that to your homescreen.

But then, you lose the top panel that allows you to make a new post, see your notifications etc unless you scroll all the way to the top. That's the way I remember it. Did they change that?

you are correct. You would need to scroll to the top to see those.

thanks for all your replys.. this is the only issue i am having.. and the battery is a beast in this phone. On heavy usage with 5hrs+ screen time and 3hrs of phone calls my phone is at 3% after 15 hours which is way way better than my iphone. I had tried stream app for facebook and its nice scrolling is a bit smooth and some features are missing. I will try the beta app as suggested.

Lag, stutter and crashes are a daily occurance on Android. Fanboys will deny it online, but if you've ever used an iPhone it's instantly obvious.

only lag or stutter i get with the moto x is in the chive app and xda developers app. These are app related not android related. Moto x has been publicized as one of the best android experience to date for partially these reasons. Apple will always be better though. One phone built for one software. Even though the latest release for apple really screwed up how well older devices worked.

I just came from an iPhone 5 and am using the Nexus 5 now (soon to be owner of the Moto X), and I can tell you that I have had no lags on my Nexus 5 at all. Just because app developers dont code their apps properly, and manufacturers insist on slapping their phones with bloated skins, doesn't mean the OS itself sucks.
And the fact that android stands up to iOS in smoothness, when iOS is NOWHERE close to Android in terms of functionality is a testament to Google and their OS.
And no I am not a fanboy by any stretch of imagination. I regularly switch between iOS and android phones (albeit only the top end ones) and have an iPad mini as my tablet right now (which I got after flipping my nexus 10)

very true. The only app that lags for me is facebook, and I stopped using that a while ago, so it doesn't even matter.

Not sure what phones you are using, but I haven't had these issues since my sgs2... Since then, it was only minimal lag and stutter... Until the moto x. I have had 1 rrb since I owned this phone (2 months) when it lags and stutters it is so limited and or imperceptible that I don't notice.
I'm no fanboy, I've used iOS extensively and it is a very very smooth experience, yes, more so than on Android, but that is to be expected considering their iron grip on the entire system.
What's funny is the way Apple has designed their os to hide the existence of app and system crashes. There is a setting in iOS that is a debugging/usage statistic report that gets sent to apple, if you have it enabled and then read the log you will see what's going on behind the scenes.
One of my employees and I were talking about this, he has an iPhone 5 and I asked him if his phone ever crashes or if apps force close, he said never. I then asked him if you ever are in an app and it just randomly goes back to the home screen, he said yes, and it was a common occurrence. He thought it was him pushing a button or something... Anyways, I explained that this was the apps force closing, it's just that Apple has cleverly disguised it, unlike Android which tells you point blank.
But I digress... I asked him to go to this setting and see if it was enabled, it was and so we looked at the bug report. There were over 2 dozen app crashes, Facebook and bluealien (reddit) were the main culprits, but also safari and a few others. All completely unknown to him because if the sly way Apple coded their os.
What my point is, is that even iOS is not perfect, and I found that there were more crashes on any iPhone 5 vs even my sgs3 and exponentially more than my moto x... Apple just hides it very very well.
Tldr: Apple hides the existence of os/app crashes, they happen more than anyone knows.

What would make you want an iPhone?

Don't rip my head off for this one.
I'm on vacation, and have to out my phone in airplane mode for the week. I can only do hangouts with people who either have the app, or have android, and use the app. My gf on the other hand, can iMessage all of her friends, video chat with all her friends, etc. Also, my work emails will only work on iPhone, or on android with an outdated gingerbread styled app.
My question is this -
Hypothetically, if the iPhone had a 5" screen, and allowed widgets and launchers, what would you need the iPhone to have in order for you to switch?
I don't think I would switch because I love the look of android, but I feel like I'm waiting for the OS to unify better between OEM makers, and that doesn't seem to be in the near future. I'm jut curious about everyone else's thoughts.

iOS suckssss. Its boring. There's no customizability. The hardware is nice though, but android manufacturers are now starting to also make some really nice hardware as well.
Only way I'd take iPhone is if I could flash KitKat on it.

Nothing would make me want an iPhone. Not now not ever. That thing is insanely pointless, and has crappy software with random bugs. Not even the hardware is good and it costs a fortune.
I'd guess making expensive apps so all the rich and upper middle class people would buy them.. Cause rich people constantly know nothing about technology and populate themselves with iDevices just because they think it's good because it's expensive and popular.

You could have used Google Voice app to text (SMS) your friends (regardless of whether they had iMessage or Hangouts installed), and could have used hangouts/skype for video chatting.
Work Emails, well, yeah, that sucks, My employer (over 75000 employees worldwide) doesn't have an Android app to access the secure network. When some employees (on a quarterly call with a few thousand employees) asked a senior VP "Why no android app", he responded, and I quote, "because as you all know, Android is so easily hacked, and is insecure". Numbnuts!
Yes, I (along with several others) sent Emails to him explaining the facts (and he said that he'll talk to the IT team to see what was needed to get an Android app developed), but the point is that Android development has been on the backburner for many corporations for many (stupid) reasons.
Would I switch to iPhone? If they provided the ability to use launchers/widgets, *and* the ability to sideload apps, *and* the ability to install adaway type apps, *and* the ability to use tasker type app, and they had the screen size that I wanted, and had deep Google Now integration, sure, why not... It would just be another "Android" phone by that time

See, that's the beauty and beast about android. I love that you can sideload or install an app to do what you want to do, but I don't like the fact that its not integrated better. That's the thing that made me (consider) the iPhone.
For things that I really wish Google would do, is force OEM makers to do specific things to the OS of the phone. For example, integrate hangouts as the main texting app, that way we android users can hangout with each other. The user can download their own texting app if they choose, but at least make the stock one hangouts. Because almost all my android friends have Samsung's, and I have yet to see hangouts being used by them.

Thing is, some people (me included) like the fact that Google doesn't (yet) force me to use a specific app for a specific purpose. Samsung/HTC and others do bundle their own apps (that can't be uninstalled), and most users call that bloat.
It is rumored that Google will bring VoIP calling capability to Hangouts in the near future (as it did for iOS last year). Once that happens, I would expect more users would install Hangouts (even if it wasn't installed by default). Whether they use it as their texting app would depend on them, but at least you would still be able to use video hangouts with your friends then.

The default app switching is the biggest part keeping me where I belong. I know I switched to am iPhone for a week and it was the worst.
This Whole thread, by the way, is not to convince me to keep my phone. I love this phone, but just was curious what would make you hardcore android fans switch.
Edit -as far as the bloat, its not bloat I'm talking about, I meant specifically the text app

Hmm, to be honest, an iPhone with 5" screen and widgets/launchers would probably be enough for me to make the switch. Although the OS would still be very "limited" compared to Android, I don't think I would be too bothered about it. It simply just works better and smoother than Android does or will. People can post benchmarks all they want, or videos comparing app opening times which in reality don't mean that much, but the fact is, the overall experience is a lot smoother on iOS. Even Nexus 5 still lags and stutters when scrolling which is pretty amazing considering the hardware that is inside.

Hangouts comes preinstalled on any Android device that has the Play Store now (I believe... but at least the big flagships like the Galaxy S5, HTC One, Nexus 5, etc...). Your friends may not use it, but it's there :laugh: I think it's been said, but the only reason iMessage/Facetime seems more integrated is that Apple forces you to use it. If Google changed it so that all Android phones had to use Hangouts and alternatives couldn't be installed by the user (there are alternatives for the iPhone, but you need to jailbreak and use Cydia to install them), then I'm sure all of your friends would be using Hangouts. But you'd also upset a lot of Android users who like the choice.
I do think it's ridiculous that Hangouts for iPhone has voice call capability while Hangouts for Android does not.
Anyway, to get me to switch there would need to be a lot of changes. Bigger screen, better support for alternative apps (SMS, dialer, browsers that aren't just interface swaps with the same backend, launcher, etc...), a more complete interface overhaul, access to apps installed from outside the app store (without jailbreaking), NFC support, something like Tasker...

In my country where many people are switching to android, they still don't use Hangout. It all depends on the messing service that is used by all and that's WhatsApp here.

I think it would be nice to force that as the stock messaging app, but give users the choice to change it via the market. But that way, my not so techy friends can actually start using hangouts with integration and the techy ones can figure out how to use other messaging apps if they prefer.

Well, that's how Google handles the Nexus phones, but that's far more control than they have exerted on manufacturer skinned phones. Samsung already doesn't like that they need to include all of the Google apps (apart from the play store) alongside their own, I think that enforcing that they be the default would cause an issue. Especially with Samsung's market share of Android phones.

They'd have to become fully open source for me to even think about it and even then.. Na shock treatment is the only way. ;P Females tend to prefer iphones more than males i think. At least more females that I know use them vs males who i know and they will NOT switch.. My wife, ex now had to have one so i bought her one when we were together. Wasn't impressed with anything but the camera and now Android is just as good in that department.. Android rules!! \m/ Been with Android since the G1.. I have so much love and respect for open source and the customization of Android blows apple off the map.. We can tweak our devices 100% with root, custom roms, kernels and themes.. Aosp is just too great imo.

The ability to obtain root access through means other than exploits that Apple patches as fast as they can. If that were possible, along with some more customization, I might consider it. And a price drop. Way too expensive.

[Q] Cross platform messaging with iOS devices?

Hello all. Had the N6 for a couple of weeks now and love this phone like I loved my last Nexus (the N1).
Only problem I've got is that my progeny like the simplicity of their iOS devices. I work away from home for long periods so I like to message them when possible. I picked up an ipad a couple of years ago for this purpose but really dislike the whole fiasco of keep track of two devices that have completely incompatible OSs.
The wife doesn't want me to set up a Google+ profile for the kids either so I'm looking for a solution that would allow me to message them from my N6 to their imessage accounts...
I found http://imessageonandroid.com/ but I'm leery of the need to side load what I would think should just be on the play store if it's so wonderful. I don't see any justification for side loading on their site either.
Anyone ever used it or know of another solution that I can seek out that doesn't involve the young one's creating more online accounts?

If they have a gmail account you could use hangouts. You don't need to make a G+ to go with it and hangouts seems to be good for most people.

You won't find an iMessage solution. You will need to stick with something else that is cross platform. A few are Hangouts, Telegram, Whatsapp (You might need a telephone # for this one), and plenty of others.

Both my 3 and my 5 year olds, both with iPads, call me through hangouts almost nightly. They haven't grasped the whole messaging feature yet, but I work nights so its how I say goodnight to them sometimes. I'd say hangouts is your best, most full featured option.
My better half also enjoys iOS with her iPhone 6, she, however, hates hangouts and will only download it on her phone if I ask her to for a quick video chat.

Ditto except my big two use their iPods, my little two use the Nabi Jr and Galaxy Tab 3. My wife with an iPhone 6 won't even download it.
