Iris scanner in the dark - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I just noticed that my Note 8 does not scanns irises in dark room.
I remember that note 7 was doing that.
If there is a bit of light source, it works pretty quick, but if it is pitch dark, even if i see my eyes in the upper part, it says after a while that irises were not recognized.
I had even tried to register irises in pitch dark, but without success.
I have even tried face scan .. it works only if there is light towards my face. Otherwise, nothing.
Is it yours different?
Thanks!

Mine works in the dark. I'm actually quite impressed how well it works altogether. Was really skeptical about it all at first.

Try putting a complete dark wallpaper on lock screen ... and try again.
It seems that mine got a bit better as soon as i added a bright lock screen wallpaper.

Black wallpaper in pitch black it unlocks for me.

How to do Sceen test +Banding on Windmill wallpaper?

I would like to know how can i check the screen of my new phone for dead pixel, patches etc.
I have already tried *#0*# method, but i want to check with light colors.
Some apps are there in market, but i dont think they support HD resolution.
Next, i can see horizontal lines across screen whenever i use the live wallpaper "Windy weather", its the one with windmills. The lines are especially visible during daytime in the wallpaper... so is it just a problem due to lower resolution of the wallpaper?
I havent seen any other color problem yet, except the above.
Look long and hard enough and you will find something that bothers you.
I'd say just enjoy the device.

I agree with you and i am happy wid my purchase, i just wonder is this because of low-res pic or its a minor banding.
Update: I am also finding horizontal lines in the Sky when playing original angry birds...

Day one with HTC one

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better

You had to root your S2 to get that too.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.
Not trying to attack anyone here, just want to make sure that the information is explained a bit more.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3

100% black wallpaper has a gradient at the top

Does anyone else have this problem it only shows on a black wallpaper and can be hidden by placing a black object over it. Its almost like the wallpapers not fully black but ive tried multiple black images and a factory reset and its always there im sure its a fault just wanted to point it out and see if anyone else sees it on there device.
I've seen it as well... But not just on this phone it has been on multiple Samsung devices that I have owned as I typically run a solid black background.
yeah this one sucks .. only solution is by using live wallpaper or set samsung theme wallpaper.

Yes, I already posted this query. ( Repost).Bottom line, it occurs on home screen only at top or screen. and is due to the resolution of the image used. Try a proper black wallpaper designed for the note 8 home screen and all will be good . Using black wallpaper from note 3 or 4 won't work .

interesting i did actually search before posting im not new around here i know how things work i never found your thread, i put tags in my post so that its easy for people searching this issue to find it, sometimes its just a case of getting the right keywords. Anyways like i said i tried multiple black images even made my own in CS5 resolution was 1440 x 2960 IIRC only thing i havent tried yet is an indexed color but i will ive had lods of sammy amoled phones and this is the first time ive seen this happen.

That was the only one that worked for me. All other would show a horizontal type "light bleed" around the LED indicator top left area on home screen.
Cheers.

Yes had this one all my sammy phones
The 'FIX' i use is to download any app that will let you set an image and apply it as a Live Wallpaper.
for example
download this one and set your custom wallpaper with it and apply the live wallpaper.
This way you can use any true black wallpaper you like rather than sticking to samsung theme stores wallpapers
it should have gone now

Just got a replacement note 8 does this lool normal?

..
Can anyone help please ?are my wallpers corrupted or something.?I'll return the phone tommrow for another note 8 I think if nobody can tell me if this is normal or not i assumed in the note 8 section there wpuld be note 8 owners?.cheers boys
Lol try a different screen saver.... you keep showing the same lockscreen pic but different colors...
Im asking if that nasty looking gradient is normal to see that defect on the orange lock screen amd the purple lockscreen.the last 2 pics were to show that they don't have the defect .
That's what I'm asking.its not really funny just a very simple question.so ovbiously nobody owns a note 8 here apart from me .So I'll return this tommrow and get a replacement. Thanks for all your amazing help guys jeez smh
Idk man i cant see any bad gradient
Ok cheers mate. Btw to see the issue I had the brightness up high in the dark so the always on display was very bright then the poor gradiut is visable easily.your pic shows thay the brighmess is not up high ,also its only the orange wallper and the grey one look bad, the blue and the purple one look great smooth gradiunt ,i think I'll return it in morning but I won't be shocked if they all have this issue on these 2 infinity wallpapers.so I'll find out soon if the infinity wallpapers have some how corrupted themselves some how when I swap this phone for another tommrow, In normal conditions it's not very visable unless you really look for it. But it's not nice imo at night in a dark room

Light vs Dark

How many of you are using using dark mode? I am using the light mode in dayllight and dark theme at night so the auto dark theme is a nice thing.
I was using dark mode most of the time but started to get a lot of headaches during the day. After switching to light mode when there´ś daylight it´s easier for my eyes and I´m feeling good. Anyone else had a problem like me?

I prefer light mode. If dark mode was dark grey everywhere like it is in Gmail etc then I'd use it.
Pure black looks awful.
Dark does improve the battery life and I was dark mode, all day, everyday. However, I wanted a change and went with dark mode only after sunset. Now I'm back to all day again just to change it up again. I agree, light mode during the day is better.

It's worth 100%.For me it's the best rom I've ever used on Pixel. You get a lot of extra features. Pair it with ex kernel and you get petfect stock android experience.
I mostly use light mode (Belo theme) but sometimes will use Swift Installer after sunset!
