AOD battery consumption - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi guys. Got my note 8 several days ago. Up to now I'm totally stock. Noticed that AOD consumes too much energy. It is second in consumption after screen. Previously on s7 edge it was on the bottom of the consumption list.

Yeah it was like this for me on my S8+ and now my Note. Hopefully it'll be fixed with an update.

Thanks man. I was wondering whether it is just me. Jumped directly from s7e to note 8. Previously never had issues with AOD battery drain.

I'm happy to hear that perhaps what we're seeing on the N8 is not the expected battery consumption. I liked the idea but I'm certainly not willing to give up 6-8% of my battery life for AOD.

Same here. AOD causes at least 1% per hour battery drain on my phone. My wife's S8+ had 22% drain overnight with AOD on and when AOD was off, it was only 2%. I remember AOD wasn't draining that much battery but I feel that the latest upgrade (the one that removes black nav bar and comes with N8) ruins the battery life.

I noticed that while the batterystats shows that AOD has consumed 2% the Appmanager shows AOD at 0% battery....
Seems like something is of here, anybody else noticed this?

Noticing similar battery usage, as well. Hope this is something an update can fix but I might just forgo using AOD for the time being. Not worth the juice it's using, currently.
The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I have my AOD set only for morning around time I get up and get ready to work, only time when I actually want it, also you can set it so it doesn't display when it's in your pocket, or probably when face down, so that could cut it's time on.

Just another update on AOD power consumption on my phone.

I've decided I'm going to keep it off. The extra juice is worth leaving AOD off. I'm going to roll with this during the next few days and see how much more I prefer it. So far I've noticed my standby time improving by a healthy enough margin.

AOD has been a huge drainer on my phone (Aus N8).
Not too sure why an OLED drains so much when phones like the G5 last year had hardly any AOD drain with an LCD.

It's not supposed to be that way. I have mine on all the time. My note Note 7 was good with AOD drain too.

Ok... I did some tests on mine UNLOCKED SnapD. If AOD is off.. I get like 3% drain over night. After a few times AOD on.. went to sleep battery was 76% got up 53%. No big deal to me at all. On or off .. I could care less. Yet.. does drain BIG TIME!

I'm wondering if drain is caused if you have notifications on with AOD?
Sent from my SM-N950U using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Just to boop this up a bit.... I'm having the same issue.
I've only got the clock on with the little notification badges and this seems pretty ridiculous.. I didn't have this issue w the same setting on my s8+ so I'm lost.
I really like using it bc it's so convenient.... But who wants this crazy battery drain?

Any updates of this? Still having the problem and still no update from AoD.

I haven't seen any updates come out for the phone since the first one shortly after phone release. They're going to need to fix this in an update. I'd like to see this fixed, because I'd like to use AOD without the battery drain.
I'm surprised that they haven't update the phone yet, and it's mid November.

I'm still on August security patch. Aod battery drain is really bad on my phone, but what I don't get is why it's not happening with everyone. Some are saying theres are fine.

My battery shows the same sometimes. But that is with AOD getting 10-15 hrs on ,and it doesn't seem to effect my battery as a whole, still get full day with 4.5 to 6 hours SOT. Lots of streaming music , calls and bluetooth headphones.

Idle drain still a problem?

Is idle drain still a problem after people have rooted and frozen bloat apps? Here is a screen shot of good idle drain from an HTC one mini. 3% in 9 hours.
When I had an X and a Droid Mini, they lost 10-15% in that same time period, despite showing 98% deep sleep in better battery stats. And they were setup exactly the same as the one mini.
Anybody with an X getting anything close to as good as what I posted?
And for those who want to say "who cares," the point is that idle drain overnight is indicative of idle drain during the day. Bad idle drain is a symptom of other problems and poor optimization by Motorola, imo, and it concerns me.
Sent from my HTC One mini
My idle drain is comparable to what you posted. I went to bed at about midnight with a full charge and now it's 7 and I'm at 98%.
I don't really notice it. I charge overnight and it lasts through the entire day and into the late evenings (8-11pm). When you're getting 5 hours of screen time, I think the optimization is working lol.

Are you seeing excessive idle drain? Metal head is about the only person I've seen posting good things about idle drain. I'm tempted to buy another X now that we have root, but seeing 15% drain in 8 or 9 hours of idle just bothers me to no end for some reason.

Just out of curiosity, do those who get excessive drain leave their phone face up or face down during long idle times?

Also I would add that I think this problem affects most X owners, even though some (or most) will never notice. The battery threads show that pretty much EVERYBODY has higher than normal android OS use, due to the kernel according to gsam battery monitor. I think that is what's responsible for the drain, and personally I couldn't get it to go down even when I disabled everything. Android OS simply should not be the #2 battery drain behind screen, and it almost universally is on the X and the new Droids.

Nope, just always looking at finding better batt life. Last avg was 0.7% drain overnight. Just did a complete reinstall of the OS, root, and freeze. Going to see what happens tonight. Also hoping my moto assist starts working.
Is your wifi & mobile network access enabled under location access? That also causes drain, seemingly constantly. As far as I know, that is a bug with Google services and isn't unique to the X, but most prevalent in 4.2+ devices.

Gonna need more info than that. You talking screen on time? or total? under what settings? full screen brightness?
Yeah screen on time with auto screen brightness. Pretty much on LTE all day. Only disabled bloat apps.
Full day with it, unplugged at 3am and at 8:38pm cst, I am still at 48%. Now I don't use facebook or Tweeter so that helps my battery life. Wifi at work weak and slow so I am on LTE most of the time.

Same here. Only around 4 hrs with regular use. This device needs root.
Easily getting through a day with the phone. Most of the bloat disabled, moderate usage, Bluetooth/NFC/Wi-Fi always on, though mostly on LTE. I certainly don't expect this thing to last like my Note 4, but I'm pleased with the battery life. I get home with time to spare, and plug it in every night like any other phone, so its all good.

Root doesn't mean better battery life. My nexus 5 had about the same battery and got about the same battery life as my s6. And that's rooted, stock, slimrom, and cataclysm. My G3 has about 500 more mAh than the s6 and I get about 5 hours of screen time. Stock battery was better than cyanogen battery.
It's not 2012 anymore. Root is almost obsolete. It's good for app removal, rooted app functionality, and customization. Even if underclocked and undervolted it doesn't change dramatically. If u want a better battery, buy a phone with a bigger battery. MOST people don't look at their phone for 25% of their awake hours (if avg sleep is 8 hrs.) The s6 will give u 3.5-4hrs of screen time on 14-15 hours of use. That is plenty for MOST users

We badly need root. Rooting my phone has always improved the battery life and performance of your phone.
Battery life today was better I think. Screen-on time didn't even show up in the battery usage list, so i'm not sure how much it used. 20.5hrs since unplugging with 14% left.
This will definitely be a phone I'll have to get rid of after a year. With constant charging and a sealed battery, this device really doesn't have a long life. That's my main concern.
Someone in another thread turned off Enhanced LTE (Voice over LTE) under network settings and saw a much better battery life (or lack of drain).
I am experiencing insane WiFi battery drain. I am foregoing the use of WiFi in the mean time. Seems to help.

I updated mine plus turned off Wi-Fi and the hotspots setting in advanced Wi-Fi and battery life has improved. I still see screen as being one of the lowest factors for battery consumption. Our gs6 must have a very battery efficient display. Android os is now my top battery drain. I'm hoping an update to android 5.1 improves the system battery usage. I know it did on my nexus 6.

(Copied from another thread) S9 Exynos here.
Second full day (after a half day when I got it) and it's been pretty horrible. I expected it to be average or not great for the first couple days, but this is nuts.
I've got everything on - location, sync, AOD, Bixby, etc - and am losing about 5% per hour with the screen off. Ending the day on 15% with only an hour or two of SOT.
Will be keeping a spreadsheet log of it, including what services are on and how I've used it, so will report back. Hope it improves naturally with everything on though. Reception is also surprisingly average; in the bathroom at work my Pixel 1 had decent enough reception to load videos, but my S9 seems to struggle to even load images. Pixel 1 had 3G in an underground pub, but my S9 couldn't get any data at all.
First full day (Snapdragon)
Haven't actually charged to 100% (except the first charge) and recorded stats. I'll have to do that and see.
But the first night after setting up my phone, during 8 hours of non-use, my battery level only dropped 4%. The next night, with AOD on, it dropped only 11% during 8 hours. Pretty happy with standby battery performance.

My only suggestion is to make sure you have the display auto-adjust and to make sure nothing is running explicitly in the background all day.
Turn off Wi-fi, Bluetooth, NFC when you aren't using them.
2days turn on time with 5hrs SoT!!
Awesome.
You guys are posting some pretty decent numbers, considering all the negative coverage. 6hrs of SOT is pretty respectable and with my usage patterns it will last more than a day
Exynos S9
Used for 1 week
Disabled Bixby, Facebook
WQHD
Power saving mode off
AOD off
Max SOT 3.5 hours
3 times factory reset still no luck
Should I send my phone back to SAMSUNG for replacement?

Note 9 drain over night

Hi all,
I having issue with my note 9, and I’m new to using note, is a 4% drain normal? Unplug at 12am and not use since and this morning I check battery was at 96% at 6.45am
How long have you had it. It takes some time for it to do battery optimizations but that drain doesn't seem too bad.
tat is only my 2nd or 3rd charge, have it only for 2 or 3 day
I have been draining about .7% an hour since I got it. I wish it was little bit better but the SOT more than makes up for it.
Sorry, but what is SOT? Screen on time?
So now on android ppl use SOT to measure if a battery usage is normal?

Wow I'm telling you some of you people have some really unrealistic expectations. Your complaining your phone looses a few percent in 6-8 hours. What do you expect? If you don't want your battery to drain then turn off your phone or plug it in. And then don't come complain you miss calls or have to have it plugged in all the time becusse your worried about a few percent while you sleep.

Preferable to not leave it plugged in at night if you want to lessen the longevity of your battery.
~.7% an hour is not bad. With root and older phones I was able to lessen to 2-3% per 7-8h. Ideally that is what you want, less than .5% an hour. But we don't have root. Other ways to get less drain at night during sleep is to turn off sync or airplane mode or better yet turn your phone off. But as I said .7% an hour is all day for me in standby. I don't even know what it is at night, probably less.
I've been getting well over 10h SOT and had another hour or two of SOT left should I have chosen to drain down to <5% battery. I have been able to get 8h+ SOT over 36h on a charge. Your expectations are unrealistic as are many others on here. Be realistic or get another phone.

That's interesting has to be a app causing the drain what third party apps do you have installed? the screen res wouldn't affect anything in terms of battery life because the screen is off. I charged last night and I'm at 16 percent right now on WQHD almost been 22hrs since I charged my phone

Change the resolution to WQHD+, the power saving is too little to worth the downgrade of screen quality. Tested on s7e,s8+ and s9+ and read about it for note 9.
Also worth to note that iphones tend to show less drain at high percentages and then speed up after below 60%, i.e. if you leave the iphone over night with 30% battery, most likely it will drop 1-2%. Still, iphones standby is a little bit better vs android and samsungs. I achieved 1% drop over night or non in M8 android 4.4 times, not since them. My best is around 0.3%/h via root and custom tweaking, for samsung stock it's normal to have 0.4-1%/h. Hope that brings some clarity.

My note 9 is a week old, but I'm no where the statics says about the battery life, I have iPhone 6 and it hold the battery better than my note 9, my usage is really under average I wake up 7 am with 100% I reach home back from office with 13~10% left , and I really don't use the phone at all, you can say that I use it approximately for 30 min through my whole day my iPhone 6 is at 71% with same usage and my iphone was charged two days ago I have no clue what's up with my phone, I disabled sync, navigation bar, nfc but no luck .

Leave off charge at night and see how much battery it uses during the time you are sleeping. Report back.

Once(night) with flight mode and once without.

Just FYI, signal strength is probably one of the biggest influences on battery life. If you're in a concrete building where the signal is very weak, the phone could be constantly polling for a stronger/closer tower. Using WiFi at work, if available, will help mitigate that.
7 hours sleep lost 20% flight mode is off, I still think 20% idle is very high

That is high, i had same issues.. i was losing around 40% over 12 hour period! 4g on Sync On that's it everything else off..
My NOTE 9 was only few weeks old come to week 4 i had a replaced.. Before having it replaced week 4 battery got much better i was losing around 4-5% over a 12 hour period.
i still got it replaced, one thing I’ve noticed it seems like Note 9 is learning your usage pattern.. Your battery will settle down, you just have to give it time.. Samsung usually offer 30 day replacement! so wait till you get into your mid 20s days if the battery isn’t normal get it replaced!

You definitely have a rogue app or something, I leave home with 100% and use the phone a bit and i have 80% odd when i get home, install better battery stats and check what's consuming your battery.

Get it replaced , dont waste your time trying to figure out the problem. It's a hardware issue.

yes, install the app called better battery stats and let it run for a day, and see which app(s) or process is consuming battery.
Just an observation in regards to deep sleep and signal strength. I've noticed if I place my note 9 in an area where I have the best signal before I got to bed , then less wake locks appear to occur. I've tried this theory a few times.

The absolute max should be 7% for 7 hours (1% per hour drain) and most of the time it should be around 3-4% for 7h. Most likely you have a rogue app on your phone that is causing the issue or you used package disabler to disable some packages in the operating system.
