Considering trading my note 8 for an S8 plus - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I loved my note 7 (nice rounded edges samsung oem screen protector etc) This phone just feels ...well HUGE... in pocket as well as in hand... I am realizing im not using the spen at all really (other than to send sparkly messages to my wife) since i got my ipad pro and pencil for sketching. For some reason this thing feels immense in my front pocket and heavy.I read at night and holding this phone can be cumbersome at best.. I love the screen and playing games on it but for pretty much everything else its not what i expected. I went to best buy and held both phones at the same time and the s8+ feels so much better in hand with only a .1 in screen difference (i cannot even notice) Am i crazy for exchanging it for a S8+?
ps i like the dual camera live focus thing but for me personally its not that important. 99% of my phone pics are point and shoot and share to a friend or social media..

Really, this is a decision up to you. No one here can tell you what phone you want. But in my opinion, if you don't care for the S-Pen, the better screen, and the dual cameras, then you would be both happier and better off financially if you get the S8+ instead. The S8+ is practically the same phone if you remove those features from the Note 8. The processor is the same and Samsung will support both phones with updates for the same length of time.

Yes, we all have a different preference Good luck finding what you want!

I'm posting from my S8 plus right now as my n8 is on the charger hands down I love my Note 8 so much more but then again I like bigger phones the S8 plus just seems so tiny compared

There's not much difference besides the ergonomics. The s8 plus feels good in the hand and less blocky. I wouldn't do it.

Nothing worse than buyers remorse. So sorry to learn you are not enjoying your Note 8. Odd having enjoyed the Note 7? The Note 8 improves on all the Note 7 had, then some.
I do hope you enjoy the S8+ it's a superb phone, I moved sideways from it to buy the Note 8 as I want and use the S-pen. Had I not wanted the S-pen I would have still sold the S8+ and bought the LG V30 as next on my list of prioritise is music and the LG excels in that arena.
Let us know how you get on. :good:

I got a Note8 to replace a S8+. The Note8's for want of a better word beefier. I like the corners of the display squared; there's more usable space. And it has S Pen which I've missed since the Note7 debacle. My S8+ was a UK Exynos and my Note8 is a S-835 unlocked U.S. phone because of the $425 Note7 discount. They perform the same and even battery life is the same even though the Note8's battery is smaller. Side by side I like the colors and brightness of the Note8's display better. And my S8+ was one of the few without display issues.
To each their own.

Yeah my S8 plus was nothing but something to tide me over until the Note 8
It's pretty much become my Kodi box

If this is what you want, don't let anybody persuade you otherwise, just don't let the door hit you on the way out. I couldn't wait to give my S8 to my wife and get N8, but I use s-pen all the time and I'm surprised you going for S8+, instead of S8, since as you said the difference is small, but whatever makes you happy, it makes you happy.

i actually considered the s8 over the s8 plus but it seems much more narrow or improperly proportioned compared to the s8 plus if that makes sense.. my main grip is the in hand and in pocket feeling the squared off note 8 feels compared to the much more rounded s8 plus it feels much more ergonomic in my hands.. i barely used the spen in my note 4 and simply got it because at the time it was the largest screen offered in a sammy device.. i guess at some point bigger isnt always better..

Me also but i was annoyed they didnt move the fingerprint reader which put me off it some now the whole issue with the OEM unlock option missing on some exynos devices.
Not looking like I will bother with it but I did play around with a note 8 and had my s8+ with me and like the way the note felt in hand better.

I've got both (well wife has the S8 plus). I really can't tell a difference in size and I have small hands...
As long as you are happy.

Yep, aside from the Note being a bit (approx 0.7cm) longer than the note, it is just as wide. The note 8 has more square corners too but overall the width is identical...
I also have both.

THAT is what counts. What you like and enjoy. :good:
Well done. Ryland.

I would of stayed with note 8 more ram and way better standby time than s8+

I came from my s8+ which I absolutely loved but I switched carriers and figured I'd try a different phone, first week I wanted to March back to store room exchange for s8+ as the note 8 is heavier and tad thicker and screen is more blocky, and now a week later I have to admit I do love the note, the spen is really useful for me at work as I need clients to sign my phone when making transactions, battery life isn't as beast as the s8+ as expected, but isn't much behind either, both phones are all day battery, so no complaints there but I feel note 8 has more screen real estate simply from the corners being less rounded, I'm a happy camper

I ended up going back to the note 8 !! Even with a case on the s8 plus i was getting false registers on the sides and corners with my big meaty hands... Is will be here Monday. Also in gaming grip or watching movies there note is far superior.. i feel dumb returning it but hey, it was a learning experience and at least i ended up with the better phone in the end

Yeah, for sure if you're not regularly using your S-Pen and you're not gonna miss the dual cameras or the extra bit of RAM the S8 Plus is a reasonably solid alternative. Like others have said here, the Note series is no longer the only device with a large OLED screen. Hell, now you'll have the LG V30 to choose from if you're switching away from the Note 8 as that's also OLED (and flat).
The feel between these two phones, aesthetically with the body's frame, for sure, feel different. I still have my S8 Plus to kick around and I can feel how well it rest much easier in the hand than my Note 8. I'm just partial to the more squared off corners of the Note 8's screen. Something about that more sharper edge in the corners also makes it feel like a thinner phone than the S8 Plus. I know, that sounds weird but that's what I feel when I'm holding both of them. The screen, IMO, needs to be as sharp in the corners as possible because I find that to be more sleek and mature in design.
At least we have some brilliant choices to pick from today. We're pretty spoiled in the modern phone market.

LOL! I was watching something on TV while I was typing my previous reply so I took a while to finish what I was typing and I didn't see this until I finally hit "submit". You're back on the N8, that's cool. Like you said, you learned what you really wanted so that's good. Enjoy your new phone when it arrives!

help me decide between note 5 vs edge plus

Hello everyone,
I'm looking to upgrade my note 4 (H version) to either a note 5 or edge plus, I aware that both phones are 95% identical yet there are few things that are still not clear to me which would help me decide. I know that each phone is targeted toward different audience however, the main decisive factor in purchasing the note series in the 1st place was the display size & the hardware, the stylus functionality was always an added value.
If some of you might be wondering why I'm upgrading from N 910H its because of the 4g support, 64 bit chip, premium build quality and I'm guessing it will enjoy better vendor & community support than the H version that I have.
As such, I would appreciate your help if you could provide me with your experiences/ knowledge:
1- Which one has less bloat ware that might sluggish the performance of the device? for e.g. the note 5 comes with a lot of Samsung software/optimization for its stylus functionality which might impact the smoothness of the device not to mentioned TW
2- Which one has more usable storage (less system memory) considering the limited storage options we have?
3- Which device scored better in benchmarks testing such as Antutu ?
4- Which one has longer battery life?
Thanks everyone
after my experience with my 32GB S6 edge, i realised just how small of a storage it is and went with a 64GB for my Note 5 Duos. the OS takes up just over 1.5GB and System Memory takes up under 10GB. if you need the S-Pen, your number 1 becomes a moot point.
if you need the absolute peak performance in processing speed and battery life, then i would think it becomes a very negligible difference between the two. i haven't seen actual comparison specs, but i would imagine they're both similar.
personally, i really wanted the curved front screen, but the stylus will always win me over. i need it for cropping screenshots, diagramming and taking notes, quickly. and like i tell everyone else, in case you ever need it, at least the stylus will always be there.
The curved screen is a gimmick. The novelty will wear off very quickly. I honestly don't see the point. It looks cool, granted, but it makes content look distorted. Why would you want that?!
Anyway, it wasn't even a choice for me. Note 5 all the way.
If I chose the edge+ over the note 5 I would only do so if it has "proven" better battery life, more available storage and smoother experience (less bloat ware) not because of the curved display.
I have the edge, I really like it a lot, but I don't use the edge what so ever. Basically bought the phone due to the color, and looks. Extremely visually appealing.

That's a tough decision. .. but then you have to pick a color! !!!
I would ideally own all of them!
I had the S6E before buying the Note 5 and while I loved the look and feel of the Edge screen, there were 2 major reasons I didn't buy the plus. The first is simply I didn't even use the few edge features there were, as previously said it's gimmicky. Second, and this is the big one, terrible options for glass screen protectors. It may seem odd to make a buying decision based on the screen protector support but I cannot and will not go back to anything but tempered glass and I am not willing to forgo any sort of protection at all.

That's exactly my issue with the s6. I couldn't buy the proper protection for it and it got broken on me. The note 5 is much better with protection and cases.

If it's as good as the S7 Edge with SPEN then it'll be perfect for most folks. Should spend time in the TMOB S7 Edge forums to find the quirks.

I've lurked in there for quite a while... I ordered a S7 when it first hit but cancelled it before I ever got it due to locked bootloader....
I told myself regardless of locked bootloader I want the N7 so I'm making the jump...
The thing I like the least is that I can't find a tempered glass screen protector for my s7 edge so I am disappointed that a non edge version isn't being released.

Honestly though I don't think the work very well. My cousin has the s6 edge, and with the tempered glass and a case (uag I believe) on it caused all sorts of touch recognition issues. Could be dependent on case and all that, but still seems like a lot of trouble.
Anybody see that the Chinese version might have 6gb of memory, and 128gb of storage. http://www.gsmarena.com/galaxy_note7_to_have_a_6gb_128gb_version_after_all-news-19786.php

I wasn't really very impressed with what I saw online, but when I went to Best Buy to check it out I was sold. You really have to see it in person to appreciate it. The curved edge display is much less intrusive than previous edge models, I felt like I could hold onto it without worrying about dropping it (since I won't be using a case). It didn't feel laggy at all. The phone feels nice in my hand. I liked the silver a lot, but even just the reflection of the store lights was very distracting. The S-pen worked really well. I know a lot of people don't really use the S-pen but I use it all the time on my Note 4. I like the new S-pen features, the magnify and the translate. I'm glad they brought back the SD card, that's the reason I didn't buy the Note 5. I like the IP68 rating, that's a feature I really liked on my S5.
I don't like the absence of a removable battery, or that the phone is only available with the edge display. I'll never use the iris scanner so I feel like that's wasted space and resources. Would be nice if they kept the IR blaster, but honestly I've never used it on my Note 4. Black is pretty plain looking from the back, looks like cheap plastic to me, so we've got the fragile nature of "premium materials" with the look of cheap plastic.

I have a s7 edge and I'm seriously considering it. Biggest reason is, and it may sound stupid, is because for 1 I want a different color than my silver. And for the bigger reason I think it has a wider side rail which should be easier to hold and reduce the accidental touches. And lastly because I can .

What I like is that Note 7 finallly featurs water resistant and curved screen, which makes the phone more pratical and beautiful. What I dislike is that it doesn't have a bigger battery than S7 as Note 7 get bigger screen. What I care is the Note 7 whether supports Quick Charge 3.0?

Galaxy Note 7 body is more narrow

I went to some cellular stores to get my hands on the Note 7 for a little bit. The first thing I noticed is that the Galaxy Note 7 is smaller (narrow) in your hands than my old Galaxy Note 2. Outside of the curve of the screen the screen real estate between my Note 2 and the Note 7 is about the same. Just feels so weird holding the Note 7 with the same basic screen real estate as my Note 2 and yet feels so much more narrow. I had to keep putting the two Galaxy devices together screen to screen to remind myself that the straight part of the screen real estate is basically the same. The 0.2in more is really the curves of the screen itself. Just so weird.
Not a bad thing. In fact basically the curve of the glass being the bezel on the sides is the reason that Note 7 is more narrow. It fits more natural in my hands without having trouble reaching over the device with my fingers. I like that.
The only downside is now it leaves me with the feel of wanting a little larger size screen like maybe 6".
I having hard time waiting to tryout the features that I been missing from my Galaxy Note 2. The stores take away the stylus. So I wait for my preorder Galaxy Note7 SM-N930TZKATMB (Black Onyx).

I agree, it bugs that after all this time they haven't gotten a little bit bigger. I'm just glad i kept my note 4 by skipping the note 5. I watch tv on my phone everyday on my lunch break, but I'm not gonna be gaining any screen size compared to the S7E I'm using now (only because of the BOGO deal, the wife got the other one).
You will get used to curve the display the N7 is actually a better fit in the hand than the S7E IMO. I have a S7E and loved the feel of the N7. I think you will appreciate the reduction in the weight difference between the N7 and the N2
I went to local T-mobile store to see it on Aug 4th. Comparing to my current iPhone 6 plus, Note 7 is almost the same size and it's narrow. Really good design.
I just got my Note7 case today and I was able to put my Note5 in it. They are almost exactly the same size. The sides didn't fit right of course since the Note5 doesn't have the edge screen but overall it was a very close fit. When I briefly looked at the Note7 at Costco, it did look skinny for sure.

still worth buying?

My s7 edge is pretty busted up and I need a new phone ASAP. Is the note 8 still worth buying? I'm between it and the s8 plus. I hear the s9 is coming out in a few months or something. Are there any known defects I should be aware of so I can inspect the phone when I get it? I'm weary because I had the note 7 and that a fiasco that was.
I LOVE my Note 8. I've had it for about a month, and had an S8+ before that. The S8+ and the N8 are very similar, actually. The N8 has a 0.1 inch bigger screen with less rounded corners. It is bigger, thicker, and heavier than the S8+, but also feels more solid and premium.
The N8 has 2GB more RAM and a dual lens camera with 2x optical zoom. But the S8+ has a bigger battery.
The real differentiating factor is the S-Pen. Some people use it everyday, others never take it out of the phone. I personally use it more and more.
The S8+ is cheaper for basically the same experience, and I was very happy with it, but I found a great deal on a used N8, so I bought it. I think it's worth every penny over the S8+. But I wound up keeping my S8+ as a backup phone anyway, so now I have both. Either one is a worthy upgrade to the S7 Edge.
As far as defects to look out for? There were issues with the S8+ screen having a red or pink tint. The bigger issue was the one that had UNEVEN tinting. So check out the screen and make sure it's true white and even all across. I don't believe the N8 had that same problem, or at least it was not as prevalent.
Now, do you get the S8+, the N8, or wait for the S9+? Here are my thoughts:
True the S9+ is a couple months away, so you could wait for it. But then when it releases, the Note 9 will be just a couple months away, so you could wait for it. But then what about the S10? Etc... There is ALWAYS something better right around the corner.
Honestly, the S9+ looks like an incremental upgrade. Dual camera and 6GB of RAM. Both of which are available in the Note 8 now. It will have a slightly faster SD845 processor and faster Iris scanner (reportedly), but not sure if that's worth the wait.
My opinion: get the Note 8. It already has the extra RAM and the dual lens camera. If you shop around, you can get a used one fairly cheap now, almost as cheap as an S8+. Cheaper in my case, actually.
Get the Note 8. Big boys phone (or girl)
S8/S9 etc are brilliant and all... But they just seem... Oh I don`t know. Boring is the wrong word.
"Samey" is maybe the right word.
There may be marginally higher specced phones round the corner, but when isn`t there?
Get the note. It seems more "grown up". And it will be worth more come upgrade time than a s8+
I am really enjoying mine. And I`m strictly a Moto fan (at least what moto was before Lenumptys bought the brand)
Thanks for the responses guys.... I actually just watched some s9 videos and yeah there's nothing about it that blows the note 8 out of the water. I don't really care about the finger print sensor because I plan on using the iris scanner mostly. Are there any good screen protector that work with the note 8 curves screen though? I want to get a good one on it as soon as I can.

I've been using these film ones from Amazon on 2 Note 8's and a S8 + and we are happy. I'm not a fan of the glass ones because of the dot matrix effect and what not.
I hope the note 9 has 8 GB Ram, if not will wait for Note 10.

For film, I've used Spigen protectors and they were great. For glass, one of the more popular full adhesive screen protectors is Whitestone Dome. Zagg also has a new one that looks promising. Finally, there were a few cheap ones that were absolute garbage for me, lol... Check out the accessories threads for more info.

Finally, there were a few cheap ones that were absolute garbage for me, lol... Check out the accessories threads for more info.

I have it on mine and it's perfect, but yes I've read about some people having issues...Then again, I've read negatives about every TGSP! Works for me, but buyer should always research of course
Apologies for off-topic.
No doubt Note 8
If you look at my older posts..I had a Galaxy S7 Edge too. It's motherboard got fried on it's own lol. So I had to buy a new phone. I was confused with N8 and S8 too..and in my country the price difference was just around 80-90 dollars so I went with Note8. Also I am using it completely stock. No Screen Protection and only the transparent case that I got inside the box. I have learned one thing about phones in today's world...Whenever you buy a new phone, just unsubscribe from all the tech channels and newsletters as they keep pushing about the latest and greatest phones, which makes you feel that your phone is somehow outdated now. So just buy a phone and forget that newer phones exists. That way your phone will be brand new for more than 5 years.

Just busting your chops ha. Yeah nothing perfect. I am not loyal to brands. Only stand by whats best for protection. I like tech 21. But to some customer service blows. Screen protector good, but way to many steps to install. Case I love ❤
Gonna order it today. Which color do you guys prefer? I think the gut said black or gray

Black for me but it's a personal preference. If you get a case or something maybe consider that color too so they match. Really up to you though
I bought a exynos duos. It has a premium phone but
- aod drains a lot of battery so I'm pretty angry because it has not sense turn it off to get better sot.
- edge lighting doesn't work too... so bad because if you can't use aod at least edge lighting...
- I really don't know how to get 6 hour or more sot... tried everything (black theme, turn everything off, medium psm, worst resolution, etc).
- the virtual keys burns the pixel of the screen so u have to set auto hide
- Samsung support [email protected]#^ks
- most snote features disabled
Btoh:
- not matter if you use performance mode every day... it uses the same amount of battery life but slightly improve sound and screen visualisation; 2% more of battery usage.
- the phone is a monster: excellent camera, ultra fast...
- spen really nice
If note's problems don't get fixed with Oreo update consider think if really want to buy 1000 dollar smartphone and can't use it main and unique features. Also if you think to use mpsm to get more battery b life it will be like to buy a car and walk to work because use to much gasoline...
Btw... grey is the best colour

I have a duos (950FD) too, but without burn-in issues, and I always get 6-7 hours SOT... Maybe a rogue app draining your battery there. Also, can you explain more about why your edge lighting doesn't work?

Edge lighting issue is not just mine... take a look on Google and you will see that is a extended problem throw users. Edge lighting simply don't works on turned off screen or on.
About battery drain... just a few apps installed and I tested with and without aod stuff. Without it 6 hours at max: with it 4 max (6% usage). Also with aod deep sleep has a few % running.

is Note 9 is bulky in your hand ?

i was in confusion to buy note 9 or oneplus 6t , when hold n9 in hand it feels heavy , i just want to know the experience of n9 users that are you able to hold and use it for long time ?
You get used to the size and feel of the phone where others will feel super light. It's like if you drove a sedan all your life then you get a truck it will feel huge. But eventually you adapt to the change.

Thanks for the answer, you encouraged me to buy note 9 . i see you have 6t also which one you like most ?
I took my S5 and N9 in each hand, closed my eyes, and started "feeling" the differences. Swapped them between hands and continued. I have to say, if I would not see them, or feel the textures or sides (or checked their length or weight balance differences), I would not be able to tell quickly which one is which. In my hands, Note 9 feels no bulkier than S5.
I read news with N9 during local train trips (about 15 minutes), which are about the longest continuous activities I do with phones (except long calls, which are rare for me). I haven't noticed any bulkiness or hand getting tired in that (relatively) short amount of time.
When it comes to pockets, N9's significantly longer length does matter. S5 can fit fine in my jeans front pocket (though it does create a hole on one spot over time), N9 does not fit in the same orientation/properly. So, N9 is bulkier in that sense. Though I wouldn't put N9 in front pocket even if it fit, as those pockets seems to collect "hard" dust over time (or something), leading to surface wear on the corners of the phone.
It's a bit heavy, but in a good way. It's more tall than bulky.
At times I have a bit of trouble reaching things, but not unacceptably. I am 5'8" and my hand from wrist to tip of middle finger is approximately 7.5"
The phone is a little heavy feeling when not in a case and very "slippery". I've got an "Otterbox like" hybrid case and love it and I've got medium hands......
Having gone two and a half days on a 90% charge I'll live with it. Not to mention 512+256 and really good mountain cell signal

My previous device was an LG V20 so the Note 9 does not feel too heavy to me at all. It has a nice quality feel to it and feels "just right" in my hand.
Not bulky. It's relatively thin/narrow, and it feels very premium. It's a little bit tall, slippery and on the heavy side though.
That's something I had to adjust to when I switched from a Pixel 2 XL (at first, my little finger would hurt after using the phone for a prolonged period of time. The Pixel 2 XL is 26 grams lighter and the paint finish helps to have a better grip).
Even if the Note 9 looks great, my advice would be to get a good case. It feels like (and it is) a luxury phone. Better protect it than be sorry later

It's a lot more comfortable than the s7e that I got and used for two years (3m for the note 9) - even one hand. I had even hand pain sometimes from the s7e after extensive use, something I never got on my note 9. Both naked, never used a case/screen protector on both.
No problem. I actually have the 1+6
I had the 1+6t but didn't like the in display fingerprint scanner. The fact that you have to turn on the screen for the scanner to work seems odd when I'd rather have on on the back of the phone which is more reliable. But i equally enjoy my 1+6 because it's such a smooth phone, lightweight, great looks, and camera is pretty good on it. Battery is about 1hr SOT less than the Note 9.

Maybe some time in the gym is in order for you all. ?
It IS heavier than say an S9+, but I don't consider it heavy. I'm on my phone all day, and I never even think about the weight of it. Like others said, it's slippery without a case and pretty tall, so it can make one-handed operation awkward. More than anything, this trend of thin phones and no side bezel makes using it without a case difficult. There's nothing to really hold on to and it's slick, so it's easy to drop.
That's why I put it in a cheap clear TPU case and use it that way. Protects against scratches and light drops, but adds little to no bulk.
I had been using OP6 prior to this, still have it. First day I felt this was heavier and difficult / awkward to handle (considering my last note was note 4), was just a matter of a day and I'm pretty comfortable with it. Used it with the cover that came in the box first couple days, then changed too neo hybrid (makes it more bulky) but in a good way (feels sturdy).
Loving the great battery life on the Note 9 compared to OP6. Used to get between 4 to 6 hours of screen time on OP6. With Note 9, I average around 1 hr per 10 percent of battery (in case the standby times aren't too long) otherwise you can expect 10 to 20 percent going towards a day of standby + 8 hours of screen on. Do note, I'm a heavy user with dozen apps running thr background, Slack, Asana, Aqua mail (for emails), Whatsapp & Facebook.
It's a great phone overall, other than the fact it was difficult getting used to N9 being slightly less responsive than the OP6 (with Android Pie).
So far, so good!
I don't think it is that bulky. I came from Essential phone and weight wise it is just a little heavier, but not by much. it is of course much much longer.
I still carry it in my front pocket.
Not as big as you expect it to be, far more manageable than say an iPhone X's max for example.
I'll second the lack of responsiveness Vs the OP6. The Note feels more premium but the OP just flies in the comparison.

Note 9 feels tall, narrow, top heavy, dense and slippery. The 6T feels wider, lighter, also slippery.
One thing for sure, my 6T does *everything* faster but Note 9 just does things better. Higher resolution, bigger battery, wireless charging , headphone jack, stylus, and a few others.
To me, Note 9 is the better phone without considering price. Performance for the price, much better value from OnePlus and I think that's their goal.
With a heavy heart, I finally sold the OP6 so I could dedicate myself to Note 9. First few hours post the transaction were tough (I get emotionally attached to mg phones lol), all good now and Note 9 from here on all the way.
I switched to the note 9 from the Huawei Mate 20 X. If anything is bulky that Mate 20 variant is the most bulky. Note 9 now seems perfect sized.
I think it's way too heavy when compared too all previous Note phones. It is the heaviest. That's the reason why I skipped and got a Pixel 3 XL.

I actually did the opposite yesterday, I gave back the Note 9 to someone else to test in my team and will keep the 6T for awhile. The fact that Android Auto doesn't work in my car with the Note 9 is a rather big problem (I bought a car with android auto specifically because I love using it). The second reason is the infinity display. Looks absolutely amazing, but I keep accidentally clicking stuff all the time. I seem to do better with a flat display and a slightly smaller/lighter phone.

I was in 2 minds until someone bid on the Oneplus - I was so heavy hearted selling the phone that I could have flipped anytime during the transaction haha. Since the decision had valid pros and cons each side, I left it to fate for whichever to fetch my target price. Even though I experienced a little more than usual BT connectivity issues initially with N9 & my car, it's all settled now. Kinda starting to enjoy the phone now, knowing this is the only option lol. Battery life + sound + better vibration + xposed (something still good about O) + good screen seem to reasons enough to not be super whinny. Gluck with your decision!
