So I won the XDA phone of the year contest. I showed my work on the Galaxy S 2 and I was voted to win a AT&T Galaxy S 2 http://www.xda-developers.com/announcements/xdas-favorite-phone-and-tablet-of-2011-contest-vote-now/
I am typing this on a Focus S i received from someone at Samsung. This is not what I was expecting. My initial impressions:
1. Laggy. When loading a page, the device tends to lock up and words become illegible.
2. No status indicators when browsing the internet.. I want to see time and signal strength when I post a new thread.
3. Copy and paste should not be the default when you select a cursor position
4. Autocorrect seems to be pretty darn good.
5. Its pretty.
I really hope I'm not stuck working with this closed source device. Everything about it is closed source, down to the Qualcomm processor. As a hobbiest, this device isn't valuable. It is a finished product without the ability to be modified or changed in the true xda hardware/kernel hacking manner.
I'm sorry if I offend anyone. This is not my intent. This device is definitely not for me.

So, I understand that isn't what you were looking for, and yes, it's not 'open source' like the Android phones.
But I'm wondering why you thought you should post it here, rather than complain directly to the XDA moderators and/or Samsung. If you were voted a Galaxy S II, and you didn't receive it, I would think the appropriate place to complain would be the people who offered the content -- not rag on the unit in the user support forum of those of us who enjoy the WP7 O/S and one of the speediest and best looking units out there.
I already did. I figured someone may benefeit from my initial impression of the device. Also, it's not speedy. My single core Infuse4g responds better and has more features.
If samsung lets me keep this device, I'll tear it up and make a how-to on the serial administration console.
Damn the i777 would really benefit from having u onboard =/, hope u can sort it out with samsung tho =]
Hi, I am looking for a Samsung Focus S. But it wouldn't be sold in China. If you don't like it. I want to buy yours. Contact to me via [email protected] if you would. By the way, is is unlocked? I will use China Mobile SIM card.
Don't know if eBay is available in China, but that might be the best place to look.

Curious about what exactly you found not speedy? After going from a Samsung Focus > Galaxy Nexus (for 2 weeks because I couldn't handle all the lag) > back to a Lumia 710 I couldn't find a single aspect of Android that was less laggy than WP7. There are some things Android would do faster (browser page loads) but all in all it did everything with far more lag. Even the keyboard lagged severely compared to WP7.

I most certainly agree with you here. After the last 2 years with android, I replaced my bionic with the focus s yesterday. I bought a lumia 710 3 weeks ago to check out the 2nd gen devices, after coming back to my Dell Venue Pro. It was $20 USD, with no contract extension, so it was worth a risk. . Yes there are things android does better. But not alot. Wp7 is comparable in many ways...most of the ways I use a phone. Android and rooting and modding, in many ways reminds me of the old tv commercial for McDonald's chicken nuggets...parts is parts.
I will actually be moving to a lumia 900 when it arrives. I bought the Focus because its a 4.3 mango device and I had to leave the Bionic, immediately. It has been a pleasant surprise....no regrets.
Only problem so far...1 freeze when browsing while loading 30 apps with reinstaller.
I'm considering a move to the Note from my SGS2 (which would go to my wife to replace her aging Captivate).
Searching either returned to varied results, or nothing. The Wiki didn't seem to cover these specific questions.
The features and whatnot all look great to me, but my question is regarding some of the issues I've seen mentioned lately. An EMMC brick, screen problems, etc.
What known issues are there?
How severe are they?
Do they affect newer batches of the device?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

As my sister uses the glaxy note, what I can say is that there has been almost no complaints yet. The screen is good , it rarely appears pixelated but is oversaturated. About the bricks, I believe that it was notes for a specific time frame but is fixed now.... Unlukily I completely forgot where I read that ..
Hope your questions got awnsered!

The eMMC bug is still present, Apparently samsung are working on a fix, But there is no timeframe as to when it will be released.
Its a serious matter, But if you follow the instructions you will be fine, Just avoid doing a full wipe on a stock ICS kernel, Simple as that, Get the phone, Flash a KNOWN Safe kernel and job done :good:
Your note might come with GB not ICS, If this is the case, You can just stick with it until the eMMC bug is fixed, GB on the Note is very nice and very smooth, I upgraded to ICS via ODIN and havent seen a massive improvement, Only a few minor tweaks and such.
The screen issues dont affect everyone, Only a small number of users, However there have been a few tips and tricks to help eradicate it.
All in all i'd say its an awesome device, Id highly recommend you go for it.
Thank you both for the quick, encouraging words. Sounds like it's just crapshoot for screen issues then, which is normal for everything. I'll both the phone once to make sure it works, then I'll have AOKP on it before it can take another breath
Or wait and buy the note 2

ive had the galaxy note for quite some time now and i must say that is an awesome device. There have been some problems such as dead pixels on the screen but as long as you buy it from an authorized samsung retailer then it should be fine as warranty will cover any hardware problem as long as it is not damaged by use. eMMC brickbug problem plauges the exynos based phones including the Galaxy Note but as said in the previous post most likely your galaxy note will come with Gingerbread out of the box and until samsung come up with a fix for that problem you can stick to GB. However even if you have ICS out of the box as long as you stay away from wiping/factory resetting and flashing any roms then your device will be ok. (Personally my galaxy note had the eMMC bug and after a wipe it had to be repaired. But since i had valid warranty i got it repaired free of charge from Samsung Service Center)
Other than that there is nothing to complain about. The screen is just great. The HD resolution combined with the big screen make it awesome for media shuch as movies and games. You also have the S-Pen to play around with. All in all it is an awesome device. If you want me to cover anything in particular, then i can make a quick youtube video, as i have a Galaxy note at my disposal.

With you there, but if the Note 2 ends up being worthwhile to me, which I expect it will, I'll grab one and pass the Note 1 I'm considering to my wife. We have an understanding. I get first dibbs on phones, she gets first dibbs on laptops.
I have had my note for a little over a month now and the only problem I JUST realized with this device is the Samsung touchwiz ui. I know some people like the touchwiz ui but try using a pure google aosp rom and you will get the idea of what I mean. I'm currently using liquid smooth rom(less than 24 hours in) ad I'm absolutely LOVING the pure aosp ice cream sandwich ui!

I agree with you that the stock touchwiz ui rom that comes out of the box is not the fastest and quite often lags. Instead i recommend using a faster launcher like: Nova Launcher OR Apex Launcher which are miles better and faster than the stock launcher. They are way smoother and can offer quite some customization and personalisation.

Yes the eMMc affects new batches. If you get a new device and it has GB 2.3.6 pre-loaded, dont update to ICS 4.0.3 just yet. Other issues, pink spot on the camera under certain light conditions. Seems to be a batch issue, and I think it still affects new units. Search on youtube for examples. The S2 is the same, but you already have an S2, so it is comparable to the 'Note. I think the SGN is fine, most issues surround the ICS update, hence my advice of holding off of any update if you get one with GB. Is it possible for you to check before you buy? If your into rooting and flashing, have a good read on the forums, much has been written. If, like me you run it as a standard factory install, a gingerbread 'Note is wonderful.
Dude check for black clipping...there on my note big time..hate it..what's the point of a so called HD screen when no dark video is watchable..other than that it is hands down the best device..
I've just ordered my Galaxy Note and received it recently, but I was planning to wait for the Galaxy Note 2 but considering it would have just quad core and a bigger screen (the Note's one already neded some getting used to for me xD) I thought I'd just stick with the Note. That and getting it at a good price
Also, I've asked a few questions, and the helpful guys here answered it about the differences upgrading the ICS from GB, I think it might help

Don't underestimate the Note 2. It is more likely to have the following specs:
5.4" or 5.5" screen
Better build quality(maybe less plastic and more screen to make device smaller)
WSXGA+ screen 1680x1050 resolution
4G LTE built in all model
NFC built in all models
The exynos 5250 dual core cortex a15 based processor(faster than current exynos 4212)
Much better GPU
Possible RAM Increase
Better version of SPen

Hi!
I'd like to know if it's reasonable to get a Note as developer phone for the next two years. (I'm noob to android, not to programming in general.)
I will need a more or less up to date android version. My (pessimistic) guess is that Samsung will upgrade the Note to JB and thats about it. There are some good roms out now and i wonder how the situation will be in one or two years. (Ver. 5.0?) Will the development community pick up where Samsung stops and continue to support the Note or will developers move on to newer phones?
Maybe someone can give me any insight on how much work is needed (was needed for ics) to port a new (minor/major) android version to a device or existing rom? (Anything between 1guy/1week and 4guys/4weeks?)
I know the usual answer is "get a Nexus" but I really like the big screen, thats why i have to ask.
Good to hear that one more person is coming into development of the GNote. Most Welcome. We are already hearing about the Chinese Jelly Bean leaks for Galaxy Note, then android keeps updating. But no matter what, we will have the devices and the development will move on. Hoping to see you soon.
I dont expect note to become developer device, better get a nexus for that
the nexus series are the first to be upgraded and build for developers
nothing beats the note in terms of screen thought
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I wouldnt expect this to have long term development either..Its the only negative I have about the phone but Im happy enough..
I'll be honest though I am pretty sure I'll get the next Nexus simply because development cant be beat that route.
as with all android devices the main dev base will always move on to newer devices when they upgrade, however im sure there will be for a good few years people sticking with the note after all main are locked into a contract or simply havnt the funds to buy a new devices when its released.
I for one will have my note for another 18 months or so, and look forward to using it solidly for deving, i have found it a great platform for app work/running linux/ROM development.
Of cause we dont know what the next big update of android will bring, it may mean that the note no longer has the power to run it etc but thats unlikely for some time (after all even the g1 'can' run ICS).

If you want a developer phone, you really shouldn't consider anything other than a Nexus.
Whilst the Galaxy Nexus isn't exactly top drawer these days, it's still very good, and both it and the Nexus S will see Jelly Bean. Whilst I expect support for the Nexus S to drop off after Jelly Bean, the Galaxy Nexus should be good for at least the version after JB.

Okay guys, here's what I need... (by no way shape or form should this become a hate-fest or trolling, please)... I had to replace my Google Nexus 6 (total hardware meltdown) with a Note 4. Now I'm not a stranger to the Note, I had a Note 2 a few years back and LOVED it.
The only issue I have is the overall performance of the Lollipop shell on the stock firmware/software and I need to find something that will still allow me to use the S-Pen for my document editing and productivity, and the most out of the hardware that I can muster out of this phone.
I am not new to flashing ROMs or Kernels (although it has been a while) - I am also open to AOSP and TW type of ROMs. I just need to know what is going to get the best performance, efficient power usage (aka - battery preservation), flexibility for IT apps (Citrix, VMware, etc) and overall visual configurability than what normally comes out of the box.
I'm honestly looking for some objective discussion here- this is not meant to be a competition or a verbal brawl - I'm looking for some answers from some experts in the field. I have been looking in these forums for answers for over 5 years (since my first Android phone - The Droid) and am looking for some intelligent and open feedback.
Thank you for taking the time to read - I know the post is a bit long - and I look forward to some of the responses. Have a great day guys and gals!
Sounds like you should give poprocks a try.

Mega just dropped a new release. He's been with us from the beginning and is all about efficiency, etc.
It's a tw rom.
Have had good experiences with Poprocks and CM12. If you go the AOSP rout check out sPenCommander on Google+ to get some of the sPen features working.

So, no matter the screen size, I'm trying to figure out the real interest level in the Tab A. Just looking at the various forums, there don't seem to be a lot of threads out there. Is it because the various screens sizes make it hard to discuss things in a singular forum? This is the first time I've gone to the apps or accessories forums and see very little activity.
Or am I senile and am looking at this too hard?

Despite all of them being designated as Tab A, they are different in the hardware department and not just the screen size, development-wise this makes it harder. Also it seems samsung isn't marketing these devices as much, so its not as popular as the S series.
Tab A is Sammy's more affordable line. You get a decent bang for the buck on the 10.1 Wi-Fi with SPen variant if bought at $249 like I did.

I bought a Tab A 9.7" because it has an S-pen. After using the s-pen with my Note 7 I wanted one with a bigger screen. I love it, I use it at job sites for marking up plans and it works great.

So from a participating standpoint, do you think it would be more active of the different sizes had their own dedicated forums? I haven't had my 10.1 long, but I like it much better than the Note 10.1 I just retired. That thing is really old and I still see people posting in the forums.

I think this is what really happens to solid devices. I also haven't had my p585 for long but the device seems solid, apart from maybe rooting it to get rid of the ad, I don't really see any urge to improve in any department.

Like you, I too loved my n8013, especially the s-pen. The SM-P580 is a very worthy successor, and I now love it. I think there are a lot of people holding n8013s that will soon be looking for a successor.
More generally, I speculate (without any proof besides my opinion) that people care less about modding their tablets than their phones. Even if they use it a lot, for important things, the number of applications used is fewer than their phone. So, once they get root and a recovery that allows backups, they can get to a mostly satisfactory situtuation. We have that now (see my tutorial thread).
Just my opinions. Glad to see this discussion!

Good points. As time went on and it became obvious that Samsung was taking their hands off the n8013 I started modding and flashing ROMs, particularly CyanogenMod on it to keep it more up to date. I also have a great disdain for TouchWiz, so I had no problem getting rid of it.
There was just so much more activity with the Note, not just from a modding standpoint... apps and themes and wallpapers. There's not much discussion about accessories either.
Did you Root your T580? If so how did you?
I bought the SM-T285 because it's a branded 4G/LTE device for the sort of cost you'd normally be paying for a generic Chinese knock-off. OK, it only comes with 5.1.1 and 8Gb of internal memory, but rooting it's pretty straight forward and the OmniROM @jedld put together works solidly. Once the Lineage 14.1 ROM has fully working GPS, I'll be flashing it so I can run Android N.
The machine was bought to replace an aging Google Nexus (2012 model), and so about half the price, it's doing pretty well.
