Sony and Security updates - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

I've not had a Sony phone for a while now (Xperia SP) and I'm just looking to find out how good Sony are at releasing updates. Do they ever release the monthly security patches or is it just the big OS releases.
Do you think this will change with project treble on Oreo an this new device?
Coming from a Nexus 5X this has been a great thing about Googles phones, I like the current Pixels but I'm sort of loathe to go for an older pixel now as they only have a year of support left for OS then a year of security updates after that but id like some of the nicer features of modern phones (waterproofing/stereo speakers) but don't want the undoubtedly huge price tag when the Pixel 2 comes out.
Looking at current market phones its Xperia XZ1 compact or Pixel XL in my price range for phones id consider. The Galaxy S8 is just still too pricey.

Been quite timely with security updates during my time with the X Compact so expect to see the same with this one too.

Thats really good to know thanks. So are you on the september update or august currently? (As september has the big bluetooth vulnerability fix in it)

Android OS updates slow?

Hi there!
Was at a phone shop earlier this afternoon afternoon and there I was comparing the new HTC One M8, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5 and the Xperia Z1 side by side. For some reason I fell in love with the Z1. Why? It was just the right size (5" screen), its very light, build quality seem topnotch, audio quality (with my headphones) was near amazing, camera quality seem excellent and it was quite fluid and performance seem spot on.
But I don't want to ask about what's wrong with it. Rather I want to discuss about updates.
As the current crop of Android OEMs start updating their devices to 4.4.2 my question is: do you guys trust Sony with timely/quick updates with their devices? You think its slow? Have they been keeping their promise in updates?
What you think?
They are ok with speed of updates..z1 got kitkat abt a month ago...but there were some bugs which were resolved by another update...am hearing that there may be another update soon...so sony seems to be good in this department

Compared to how Sony (Sony Ericsson*) did treat their older device generations (2010 - 2011 devices specially), I can't deny how much they have improved on the high end Z line-up! So yes, they're fast, compared to a couple of years ago!
Sent from my SGP311 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
They're not super fast but they're not slow either, they're on par with Samsung and htc on this
Which makes them much faster than lg and a little slower than motorola
Also much slower than nexus devices but everyone else is anyway
The rest of the manufacturers don't even bother to update their devices i think
BUT i'd like to point out that with Sony's 2 flagships a year schedule plus other devices, updates might begin to slow down with the increased device count. This is just a supposition of mine of course but it might happen

that is true..but we must keep in mind that 2 'flagship' devices are launched....the total no of phones launched is actually less compared to some oems..2 flagships 2 mid range and 2 budget ... very unlike samsung launching 34 phones in the indian market in 2013

But with two "flagship" devices being launched in a matter of and/or a span of 9 months (in this case the Z1 & the Z2) would that put Sony in a certain "pressure" to keep up with updating their devices often or in a quick/timely fashion?
If I was a Z1 owner in the past 6 months and realising and assuming the OEM who made my device will update it only once more (say in next 4-6 months) that would mean my device is now dispensable after 12 months even though apps are still being updated? That's not good is it?
A so-called "flagship" device will no longer be flagship after 9 months. Before it as every 12 months. How un-reassuring and depressing to know.
Or am I being too negative? Or just realistic?
u r actually being realistic... this is the fact with all OEMSs......consider a manufacturer's scenario presently... the Z1 has 4.2.2...... currently 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 are out....also 5.0 is probably coming out tomorrow.... so sony will probably skip 4.4.4 and go straight to 5.0.......Hence wenever u r buying a NON NEXUS phone... make sure u like the UI... coz as long as u don't flash an AOSP rom ... the look and feel of the OS will remain nearly the same irrespective of the android version ... sad but true
The only reason why I went with sony was the camera apps functions and graphic engine they have on the phones.

Shame on Sony

Cant belive no android 6 on z1
What a ****
Some Samsung a 3 series will get it no man
Its about marketing lol. Samsung a series newest than z1, thats why they get it. Even z1 is able to, it is about marketing. Dont compare something not blindly.
i dont think android 6 has lot of features...so its better to be in 5.1.1
Hi,
It has been quite some time since they announced that and it's a pretty useless thing to complain about. It's widely known that manufacturers only offer support for 18 months, so don't expect much more than that.
The first A series were released as of 2015, the newer A series is from 2016, Android Marshmallow was released October 2015, while the Xperia Z1 was released October 2013. It's easy to see that Marshmallow is out of the 18 months window and with a release schedule of a flagship every semester, Sony needs to give you reasons to buy the new one rather than stay with yours for longer.
All the best,
~Lord
msm8974 was deprecated by Qualcomm, stop blaming Sony
Samsung's 2013 flagships s4 & note 3 only got lollipop 5.0 (lollipop on the s4 is broken) while z & z1 got lollipop 5.1, so next time you want to make a point on how bad Sony is with their update policy ,please choose a company that's actually relevant in Software department as Samsung is literally the worst when it comes to updating older devices.

Will the 7 plus get q?

Looking at the 7 plus as a replacement device for a broken phone in the family. Rather unclear if android q update is guaranteed?
If not I don't think it's a good enough deal even at current discounts...
Sadly the successor (whatever they will end up calling it outside China) does not seem to ship anytime soon...
The android one program will give the device with 2 years update with FOTA & OTA update , 2x update software and more about security patch....
Btw ... The android Q is nothing to be realese but google will realize the android R

Is Samsung releasing monthly security patches in Canada

Hi folks,
Back on the S10+ now after a two-year Samsung hiatus. I like a lot of things about the device but it's getting into the later half of March and I still don't see an update coming down with the March security patch. Is Samsung still delinquent in this area or have they started properly patching things monthly? I'm asking about Canadian devices since I know that all markets are different.
Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks!
The Note 9 was usually a month behind but they've been better with the security updates.
Bear in mind that even Android Enterprise Recommended devices (which the S10 series is) requires security updates within 90 days. That said, I'm not sure if that applies to devices outside the US, but from my Note 9 (and even my brother's S7), I'd say this has held up quite well.
I hope you're correct. I got used to regular patches and it was the best thing about having the PH-1. Regular software updates, regular patches. No messing around. I'm always concerned about Samsung. Let's hope they are monthly, even if a month behind.
Did samsung ever release monthly Patches? My S9+ is still on January 1 patch. It usually updates every 4 months not every month so....

Not even a single custom ROM available?

Is there a specific reason or no one is interested?
No official working bootloader unlocking method from the get go of the phone and still only finicky methods.
No treble support.
Better value devices for custom development on the market with far quicker or out of the box official methods to unlock bl and "encouragement" from the manufacturer for custom development.
This phone is dead, we all need simply deal with it
Y'all better move on, as did I. Nokia don't do flagship right, you're better off with midrange. Don't buy Nokia 9 PureView too, it'll probably end up the same as 8.
I'm now jumping the ship to Samsung cuz the interface is no longer as it was years ago and security update is awesome.
