Hi everybody, i used to use adhell until the dev took it down, now disconnect pro is subscription based which is too expensive.
Is there any alternative that uses Knox to avoid the need for root?
Thanks!
Block this!
I use Samsung Internet with the adblock plus extension which works for blocking ads in browsers.
Adhell 2 is up and running on the Note 8, been using it over a week with no issues.

I tried it a few days ago and it rebooted and once back on kept crashing Touch Wiz. I had to uninstall it as it made the phone unusable. Currently using Blokada which has been working great.

thanks for the Blokaka mention. just installed it and it works perfectly. found an ad-ridden app to test it on an it was great.
my favs two ad-blocking apps (via VPN and non-root ) are DNS66 and Blokada
Another vote for Block-This. I used it on my S7E and am using it on my Note 8, both unrooted Verizon phones. Works awesome. But you do have to tolerate a notification icon for it. Small price to pay, IMO.
I used to use Disconnect Pro. Since it's yet to be compatible with Note 8, I've been using Adguard premium. It works like a charm. I love how it cleans the page.
Sent from my Samsung SM-N950U using XDA Labs
I use Adguard Premium whenever I get a new phone before root. Works pretty well but I've only used it for 2 days on my Note 8 & only 1 day on my Note 5.
Only thing is I hate that there's 2 permanent notifications that you can't get rid of when it's enabled.
Block This! has been pretty hit/miss with what gets through. I've added my Adaway lists to block this but it's not all that great. I'll have to try the other mentions.
I tried Adhell2 but it just constantly reboots my phone. Soft reboot too, I don't see the boot logo, just the "enter your pin to continue the boot" thing.
For web browsing I've just been using firefox with the ublock origin addon. I don't have any suggestions for apps (most of the ones I use are paid and don't have ads)
These apps are not in the play store right? Could you guys post links, so I don't inadvertently download a malicious apk? :highfive:
I got really excited about Blokada until it said it has to be set up in Android as a VPN service. I already have a VPN service, IPVanish, and Android won't run them both.
Hello
I've tried every VPN based adblocking apps like Blockada, Block This, DNS66, Adguard, etc.
The one I use now is DNS66 with custom DNS filtering than filtering with the hosts file.
To do this, Install DNS66 and open the app. Go to "Hosts" tab and disable filtering there. Now switch to DNS tab and deselect all the DNS there and add the Adguard DNS addresses. They are as follows:
176.103.130.130
176.103.130.131
Enable the newly added Adguard DNS and switch the Custom DNS filtering button on. Now go to the main Tab and click start.
I've found this method to have very minimal battery impact compared to the others. And also, there is no slowdown of the internet speed. :good:
Enjoy!
New Version v1.14 of "Disconnect Pro" is out which works with Note 8
But it costs $25.99
It's available via Galaxy App Store.

Yeah, that's annoying, but I find that it does wear down my battery (especially while on standby) far more than I'm comfortable with.

Not really. But it has stopped blocking Ads on my device again. I'm using Blockada now. What I liked about Disconnect is that it's not VPN based, so I can use another VPN to get around the internet restrictions in Indonesia at the same time.

personally its far too simple, there are more advanced tools out there if you have root.
Simple is not a bad thing if it does everything a more complex app does.
I use this functionality in Titanium Backup. It can deal with system apps in several ways

I agree 100%
I've tried Servicely, Amplify, Greenify, and Boot Manager (the last three with Xposed integration) and have removed all of them.
Ice Box beats them all hands down in ease of setup, ease of use and, most importantly, it actually keeps unruly apps from restarting themselves.
Somehow they would always spring back up when using Greenify and the others and I would always see them in the "Battery" screen as have used some % of my battery even though they weren't used.
:good::good::good: for Ice Box!
Give it a try, the free version can deal with 15 apps and is definitely worth a look.
I used icebox for a while too and thought it was the solution to all my life's problems but had to find a different solution after I realized that app keeps a constant connection to some mysterious address in China and sends data each time anything happens on your phone

Is that really happens? What's your source? I can't find anything on Google regarding this...
AFWall logs, NetworkConnections app, traceroute, google play store developer info. Trust me. I wouldn't say anything if it wasn't true. I really...really liked the app. It may be nothing but app analytics but I could never get the dev to reply and the address provided on google play appeared to be bogus when I looked for it in Maps...which I did report to google along with my firewall logs. Maybe its fixed. I get that developers make better results when they get feedback but I don't like unnecessary connections especially ones without an off switch. The amount of data sent appeared to be miniscule but very constant even when the app wasn't in use. I end up making my own using Everywhere Launcher + Secure Settings + Macrodroid. Secure Settings does the same thing but appears to be abandoned and the licencing used for it doesn't seem to be affected by being blocked from the internet.
How do I see which apps are always running? Im afraid that I'll freeze a app and it'll break my phone lol..

Try this (never used it myself, I've always rooted or, used Package Disabler Pro on Samsung devices) :

I strongly suggest disabling instead of deleting the bloatware, in the event you need to restore to 100% stock to take future updates.

Thanks for the tip.
So from what I read the devs removed "service disabler" function. What it's mean? the new update make the app useless? There's a lot of piss off people.
But more important if the app is now useless to disable services, and of what I read on xda, people ask for service disabler apps, and bk was recommended, what can we use now?
Does the new update kill the "Theme Service Disabler with Tasker + bk" method?
Thanks
Service disable means you still can use the apps but some services like getting location or pushing notification will not be started, because you disabled.
But now, this option will be removed, not sure if they will release the apps to somewhere.

I assume this means you can't disable any new services. All that I disabled prior to the update are still disabled. If I had read the update I wouldn't have updated the app.
I only purchased this app last month because package Disabler pro stopped working.
I wonder if that's the reason my screen off discharge rate went from 0.5% per hour to a little over 1% per hour now?

Regarding the wording, it is disabling packages, not services. In the app, I could not find services.
I think, all is well and drama not appropriate, but they should have worded it a lot more in detail.
You can disable any app you want, what you can not do now, is disabling individual services within the targeted app
After this same thing happened with Easy Disabler and Package disabler pro on the N7, I have disabled auto updating for BK since I installed it.

Just go to the BK play store page and uncheck auto-update. You need to disable the updates for both BK and the plugin.
My Note 7 was working great too but Verizon finally disabled my service which seems like some sort of violation to me. It didn't seem worth fighting them over it though.

Whats the story with the KLMS Agent licence and relation to KNOX?
PS: I am trying to disable services so OTA updates don't happen while I use the note 8 for a while before I decide if I want to root it. Obviously I don't want updates to happen and prevent future rooting. If there is a better way than BK disabler I am open to suggestions...

BK Disabler - Services Removal Explanation
@Limeybastard
Which menu within this app allows me to disable system apps that are now not allowed?
There appears to be confusion regarding the changes.
Allow me to explain.
(I've also attached a screenshot to illustrate what is missing in the newer versions.)
With earlier versions of BK Disabler, you could disable ANY Service AND still run the Application.
This would be useful if you didn't want a specific Service to run alongside the Application (e.g., You are investigating a battery drain related to Google Play and found 'AppMeasurementReceiver' Service to be the culprit. You could disable that Service but still run the Application).
With the new version of BK Disabler, you can no longer disable Services; only Applications.
The ability to disable Services WITHOUT root is a powerful option BUT can cause stability issues if used carelessly.
So you needn't worry as the new changes in BK Disabler shouldn't affect you.

I think the only thing I have disabled is Facebook from app info. I have used package disabler. Mine is unlocked though. But so far my battery life has been off the charts so Samsung finally made a phone that behaves well when not using it.
I am still waiting to do a couple of minor mods and optimizations. I don't think my battery will improve noticeably seeing as how well behaved it is currently with little tweaking from me.

Good for u. I am facing lag on home screen from day 1.
I use google calendar widget n gmail widget for work.
My setup right now is, using package disabler pro disabled all bloatware option which disabled galaxy apps as well (~64+ apps/services disabled with that option). Also disabled bixby, dex related packages/services as I dont use them. Removed google calendar widget too.
Not sure what helped but no lag in last 48 hrs.

Youtube notifications work, dunno though if there is any delay on them, I am only receiving notifications from my subscribed channels..
Gmail notifications are the only ones not working properly, meaning there is a big delay on the notification.. I would put my Gmail in the email app of the phone, or even outlook (outlook works for sure coz I am receiving maybe 1000emails per day at work hahah)
That aside, all other Google notifications work, I am being notified for weather, news, etc..
The only thing I cannot make work is the usual Google cards feed which I was used to in my previous phone (by swiping to the left home screen)

May i suggest to try out IceBox, (with shizuku to replace root) for this purpose. I don't have the phone myself, but reading this it seems perfect for exactly this.
Shizuku can allow apps like IceBox and AppOps to function without the need of root or manual adb actions, and IceBox allows you to automatically freeze apps after usage again and launch them from the homescreen icon directly, automatically unfreezing it and freezing it again after you stop using it.

Nah, IceBox just needs a method to access the secure settings. This can be done with either root, Island delegated god mode or shizuku.
Root is out of the picture for huawei, island would be relatively easy to setup since huawei does not use the multi-user interface AFAIK. Minimal chance of data loss.
Shizuku just need developer options enabled and Wireless ADB enabled if you want to use it without a pc, or alternatively just over a regular usb/ADB connection. I'm using IceBox on my stock OnePlus 8 Pro with shizuku. Never lost any data and took like 30 seconds to setup, no pc involved
