Is the telephoto lens only for the live focus mode? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I noticed when taking regular shots it seems like the 2x button only does a digital zoom not does not actually use the telephoto lens, is this how its supposed to work ?

It's for live focus, and 2x zoom + digital zoom. Depending on quality of lighting, either telephoto or wide angle lens will be used.

Camera's 2x Button is a digital zoom, not an optical zoom

The 2x button is not actually switching cameras, it is just preforming a digital zoom on the wide camera.
I placed a piece of electrical tape over the long range lens, in 1x I can see clearly, in 2x I can see clearly (but digitally zoomed in)
Only in Live Focus is the camera blocked by the electrical tape.
So my question is, is Live Focus the only way to use the second camera?
Seems like a waste of a second camera. This is not how it was handled on other dual camera phones, what gives Samsung?

And as per Slashgear: Instead, just as we’ve seen on the iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung mixes together the data from the wide-angle and telephoto lenses on the Note 8 to give the effect of a zoom. The result is the equivalent of 2x optical zoom, completely lossless, as well as a 10x digital zoom.
Going from 1x to 2x is an optical zoom on the wide angel camera, not digital. Beyond 2x is digital zoom.
Nowhere did Samsung claim that going from 1x to 2x was done by switching cameras.

They insist the 2x button triggers the other camera.

The Cnet reviewer is mistaken on the 1x to 2x camera switching.
As stated above, the test is pretty simple to figure out which lens is being used.

optical zoom limitation

Hi all, by night and in low light the camera app disable zoom lens and uses numeric zoom only when pressing 3x button. Is there any way to force optical zoom even in low light
No, because the aperture is too narrow for low light on the zoom lens.

In that case, no body had thinked about a way to force optical zoom, because it is a software which decide to switch between lenses

In low light, it would be a horrible mess. And when it's closer than it's minimum focussing distance there is no point as it can't focus. So the software prevents its use to give a more consistent quality to the results from the camera because most people just point and shoot.

Does samsung and apple have the same limitation with their optical zoom lenses
They will have shorter minimum focus distances because of the shorter focal length on a 2x lens, but they will have similar issues with aperture in low light.

Yes, both the S9 plus and the Note 8 use digital zoom in anything but optimal light, and I am pretty sure I read that the iphone does the same.
The only plus to the P20 Pro doing it is the digital zoom is from a 40MP sensor which is the biggest on a smartphone so you get comparable quality to a zoom lens.

How did you know that 40 mp is used when optical zoom is not available, because when using 40 mp mode, digital zooming will be unavailable

No because the noise reduction would destroy it.

it would be great. if i want to use optical zoom in low light why not in pro mode/ some force button to use optical. if i can use tripod and low iso it's my choice which kind of lens i want to use.

Absolutely

Note 9 telephoto lens

Does the note 9 really have a genuine telephoto lens? Or does it crop the two images together?

It is a true telephoto lens, but in darker situations it uses a digital zoom on the main lens only

Live Focus with telephoto lens

Hi,
Any methods or mods to change the camera lens on the live view mode. Actually my live focus on note 9 uses the telephoto lens. I think is much better to take Photos with the telephoto lens.
Any idea to change the camera lens for telephoto lens.
I want this too... telephoto is better to take portrait photos.
The S10 5G actually gives you the option to use the wide or the telephoto as the primary lens for the live focus mode. Maybe it will come to the S10 and S10+ too in an update?
That's a miss in S10. I need it too.

Super Macro Zoom

Is there a way to get the Super Macro mode to work using the 5X lens?
On the P30, I can use the 3X zoom lens with super macro, but on the P30 pro, I can't and can use the 1X at best.
So the P30 can zoom in much further in super macro mode.
The best lens for super macro is the wide-angle
Super Macro is based on the ability of the camera to focus at a short distance - the way the 5x telephoto lens has been configured is with the aim of long-distance focus, so it physically cannot focus on something closer than a certain distance. I've not tested it myself, but believe it to be about 1m-1.5m away from the phone.
As above, though, the wide angle lens makes for the best Macro shots in my testing.
