Controlling Roaming charges?

Hi,
Just about to go abroad with my N1 for the first time.
Any tips for controlling roaming charges (other than obviously to limit my use)? Are there any apps that can help?
Cheers.
I'm in Vancouver, Canada, and recently drove down to Seattle. Usually, when I get to the border I just turn my phone off to avoid any issues. This time though, I left it on to see what my N1 would do when switching networks. Once I connected in the US, to Tmobile, my data services automattically turned off, and I never had any additional charges.
Make sure in Settings - Wireless and Networks - Mobile Networks, Data Roaming is UNchecked, and your data services should automatically be disabled once you're roaming.

Thanks. I will be doing that.
But I will need to use it sometimes, and I'm scared that loads of background stuff will start using up data.

[Q] using GPS without data

I live in the US and am traveling in Canada. I switched off all data, but still have access to wifi. Can I use GPS without incurring data charges? I have Sprint and data charges are ridiculous. Texting is free, and I have the international calling plan so calls are 20¢ min instead of 60¢ min.
You can cache map areas in google maps. Cache what you need via wifi. I would then turn airplane mode, then turn your GPS on and you should be good.

Try mapdroyd app. U can download all kinds of maps of the worlds streets and turn data off.
I hope that helps
Good luck

Thanks! I think looking up my destination via wifi then turning on GPS will work. No data is on,GPS is spotty, but still works. Worked from Vancouver to whistler.

and as per my experience Sygic is best among other i have used e.g. MapMyindia, Ndrive, Navigon
use wifi to cache over all the data in google maps and then u can use it offline

Click to collapse
Though it requires active data connection. Try it by data off n wifi off, it will say 'data connection lost'
It just helping to reduce data consumption

[Q] Wifi and mobile data on at the same time

In my Abo the mobile data of a streaming app don't count for the usage. So the streaming app has an unlimited data amount.
When i'm in wifi, the stream don't work well, because my parents are using the wifi as well, and our router isn't the newest one So I would like to run the streaming app always through mobile data to save capacity in the wifi. Is there any way to do that ?
P.S. I have root.
P.P.S. I hope this is the right place for this thread
P.P.P.S. I'm sorry for my english
Just turn off the wifi when you open the streaming app, that are only two clicks

Yeah I know that, but I want to use other apps simultaneously with wifi.
*push*
probably impossible, it will use one or the other when both are active, wifi takes preference over 3g unless the app itself has something to force it via 3g and bypass the wifi its unlikely
