SD card... NO Option to use it as INTERNAL storage - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

Like mention on the title..
bought a Sandisc 128 GB Micro Sd card and there is NO other option other than just " format" ...
i am pretty sure that Android DOES support that feature since MM .....
so does this have to do with Nokia/HMD or am i missing something?

This is most likely due to Google as they instruct manufacturers not to include it (in the ui) in a higher capacity devices (32gb or more).
At least that is what I gathered when I was looking for a way to get nokia 8 to format ext-sd card with a file system that supports over 4gb files.
Most likely you can enable it similarly like they managed to do so with the Samsung galaxy s7, and it didn't even require root access.

i thing there is an option when using a file manager, just like it shows from here
https://fossbytes.com/android-sd-card-internal-storage-adoptable-storage/
Here are the steps to adopt your SD card:
Put the SD card inside your Android phone and wait for it to get detected.
Now, open Settings.
Scroll down and go to the Storage section.
Tap the name of your SD card.
Tap the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the screen.
Tap Storage Settings.
Choose format as internal option.
On next screen, you have the final chance to decide whether you want to change your mind. Tap Erase & Format if you want to format your SD card as internal storage.

This is disabled on the Nokia 8. It defaults to portable and there are no other options.

Oh, didn't know that... Still i dont have the phone to try it because i'm still waiting for the phone to arrive in Cyprus !

I have added a 32GB SD card into my Nokia 8, and now whenever I restart it, I get the SD card icon in the notification area. It's a small niggle, but anyone know how to stop this happening?
"The message is: Samsung SD card
For transferring photos and media"
I know this though, and I don't need to be told every time I start the phone...

The reason I feel SD card can't be used as internal memo is due to the fact that it cannot be formatted as exfat or NTFS. There's a separate thread on that.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app

something new?
hello can you help me please someone knows if the method indicated by hinuk works because as far as I require root because the memory encrypts it in EXT4 format
link for galaxy 7
https://www.xda-developers.com/enable-adoptable-storage-for-galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge/

Wish I'd read your post before I wasted £30 on an ad card that will only format as portable. The phone user guide certainly promotes and says it can be formatted as either. What's the point of portable storage I wonder?

Oh, don't you hate it!!
Just bought Nokia 8, only to find I cannot move all my apps to the SD card to free up the internal memory. What a total waste of money, even at 64gb it is still an option I require. Also I was stunned to find that contrary to all the specifications I had read from various sources, I ended up with a single sim version when I wanted a dual sim version. Darn, I think I'll get rid of it and get a phone that does everything I want it to do.... a pox on you Nokia and Google too!!!

Using ADB to get adoptable storage?
I tried using the method shown for getting adoptable storage on the Galaxy s7. I connected to my Nokia 8 using ADB, I found the name of the SD card I'd inserted into my phone, and then I ran "sm partition disk:179,0 private" and received the following error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: command '16 volume partition disk:179,0 private' failed with '400 16 Command failed'" I found another post which said that in order to run this command on Android Oreo, I first had to run "sm set-force-adoptable-storage true", however when I tried this, I received the error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Adoptable storage not available on device with native FBE".
Does anyone know if there is a way around this? I haven't been able to find anything else which might allow me to use my Nokia 8 with adoptable storage.

Fix for USB Mass Storage...

I've recently installed Android to NAND and was looking for a way to mount the sdcard as a usb mass storage device in windows from within Android. I came across an interesting widget on the Android market called "Dual Mount SD Widget":
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-protocol-usb-jBAw.aspx
So I downloaded and installed it to see if it really works... well, IT DOES!
I used voguimg-320x480-17-02-10.nbh and Plemens Android Feb 8th build.
Here's what I did.
1. Download widget. Install. Add to Android desktop.
2. Tap on it. It will say "SD Split"
3. Plug in USB cord to the phone.
4. Notification area says "USB Connected". Don't do anything (ie. Mount it).... Instead, wait about 30secs to a minute.
5. Vista pops up the default actions window for the sdcard. My Computer also lists the sdcard as a removable drive.
I've transferred files back and forth with no problem. Not only that, Astro can see the SD card contents as well at the same time.
Now, the interesting part is that the description for the widget says:
"This widget Modifies a setting that will allow you to mount your SD card to your phone and PC/Radio/ect at the same time."
I'm wondering what setting was modified and if it is possible to build this in so that we don't need to use the widget anymore.

GREAT find! I am testing right now...
EDIT: Works excellent! It doesn't seem to be in the market for me...maybe because qvga, but I found it online.
I'm running:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
ADB Drivers installed by PDANet (not that it affects the SD mount)
Sourceforge 2-14-10 NBH (240x320)
Myn's Warm Donut with Hero theme.
This is awesome!
EDIT2: I can also run ADB/tether with PDANet and use mass storage simultaneously.
This is Fantastic!! It works. Great find man. didnt find it on the market but i did find it on the net. im using version 1.6
EDIT: you should take off the "possible" from your title as it is a perfect fix
Working perfect with Myn's Warm Donut + Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks for the tip!
Definitely works! (Using Ubuntu Karmic)
I was only able to find version 1.0 on the net - couldn't find it on the market.

Man do us a favor and pl take off "Possible" from the title. This is THE fix.
Could you remind me why it's not possible without this app? is it a kernel or user space issue?
A long time ago, dzo told us that this could be solved when nand boot would be ready. Now, that's ready, what avoid solving this problem?
How fast is USB Mass Storage with the Vogue? Does anyone remember the transfer speeds it's rated for?
I'm using a class 6 MicroSD so I guess the card reader method will still be faster for me?

as I recall the notion was that running from nand would allow us the option of dismounting the sd card from the system so it could be used by USB mass storage. currently, nand still uses a cache on the sd card, so this is not yet possible.
this program allows both the system and the usb mass storage to access the sd card at the same time. I'm sure if someone cared enough to backwards engineer this we could incorporate something similar. however, why bother when there is a perfectly usable program already.

~500kb write and ~800kb read (with class 4) results may vary

I confirm this also, running fat32 and 2 512Mb ext2 partitions. this is very handy. I found the 1.65 version doing a Google search, and that is what I have tested.
I would love to find out what this widget is doing so we can add the functionality to the base roms. I haven't had a close look at this yet but does anybody know exactly what it's doing?

So correct me if I'm wrong, but it would seem that if your SD card is class 4, this will still be grossly slower than simply taking the card out and using a card reader, no? 800 kb vs 4 mb / sec? or do I have the figures wrong... For small files this is convenient but for large amounts of music files etc it probably is less practical - granted not eveyone has a card reader

[Q] Apps on SD with Interop Unlock?

With Interop Unlock, there's any chance to install or move apps on SD cards?
Currently testing this out. Games won't work too well on an SD card unless you own a class 10
Could you post which registry key to change to install on SD?
Its not simply a registry key.
It's not even about wether it is class 10 or not. WP7 devices had huge problems with their internal SD cards due to the fact that the random access time was terrible. The SD card class tells you only about transfer rate though.

yep. random access is worse on most (big) class 10 cards afaik
It should be possible. You might have to install the app on your phone. Create the directory on the SD card and move the files to the SD card. And find a way to redirect all entries from the phone to the SD card. Access time shouldn't be a big factor, because windows phone apps load into the phones memory. This is all speculation though. I don't think you can install from the store to the phone. Unless there's a way to change the install path of apps in the registry. Again, all speculation.
Sent from my Nokia 521 using XDA Windows Phone 8 App
Access time was a huge issue with SD cards on WP7. And it was "supported" there. I don't assume it would have become less of an issue on an OS that does NOT support it.

I've got the same thought recently. If it would be possible to create a junction link in Phone\Data\programs, then it should work, cause windows doesn't really "know" that junctions are only links, it handles this as a directory...
on a "normal" Windows it must be a shell command like
mklink /j C:\Data\programs\{GUID from App} D:\{copy of the entire GUID-App-Directory from C:\Data\programs}
sorry for my "poor" description, but maybe someone got an idea...?
You all are missing a really critical problem: apps (unless they have ID_CAP_PUBLIC_FOLDER_FULL or similar) cannot actually access the SD card (ID_CAP_REMOVABLESTORAGE goes through an out-of-process RPC service; the app itself still can't access the card). Trust me, moving an app's binaries and data files to a location that the app cannot access does *not* end well (in related news, I can't launch Calculator on my phone anymore).
Oh, by the way, symlinks require some registry tweaks (in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem) to work. Otherwise, you get these nasty and useless error messages about the link being "disabled" if you try to do anything with it (creating it works, but not much else). This probably won't affect hardlinks or junctions, though.

Force Allow Apps on External (in Developer Options) Query's ?

So ive been using this option since setting up my Exynos Note 8 from day one with a Sammy Pro Evo Plus 256gb micro sd card and its worked pretty much perfect allowing me to move all of the app/data to the external SD Card BUT when an app gets an update come through and downloading/installing said update the app always reverts back to the Internal whereas it was previously on the external which is obviously very annoying and inconvenient that's Query 1 so Query 2 is only as far as i can tell this only happens with any app/game from installed from Google play using this feature that is whilst im able to move all of the app/data to the external Sd card it actually doesn't show/reflect that at all in the Storage options which obviously makes know sense and obviously pointless being a complete waste of time, any ideas/suggestion with any of the above welcome, thx.

Apps to SDCard or SDCard as internal storage

How do I move apps from internal storage to sdcard?
I can find no option like that on the apps information. I installed an app that moves them but that just opens the app informations where there is no button to change the storage medium.
Also I read it might be possible to format the sdcard as internal storage. Maybe that's needed prior to moving apps.
But I can't find a way to format as such too.
The only thing I was able so far was to set the storage to sdcard for the nokia camera app.

I guess android one devices don't have the feature to have SD card as adoptable storage.
Sent from my Nokia 7 plus using Tapatalk
that would be quiet disappointing and does not make much sense either as there still is the option to force being able to move apps to sd.
at least partly this is a bug though or maybe a feature?
I installed the sd-card just recently after I setup the device and most apps.
seems if I clear cache and data of an app at least that will now be stored to sd.
some apps like google maps or nokia camera app allow to choose data location.

I hsve same problem. Got 32gb, fast samsung card. I can't move any apps to it, but copying files work, also cam.
I think option in developent settings is here because of anrdoid one, same as bootloader unlock, won't do nothing.
Can other ppl move apps to sdcard on n7+? Or does this only happens on Samsung card?
I got a replacement device and a new 256GB Samsug card. I'm not offered to format as internal storage as well. There is the option to force apps to sd but it won't work.
I guess there might really be no way to use the card other than media/data storage. And hope apps allow to choose data storage like some google apps and the camera app do.
Got this info at nokia's community forum:
Moving apps to SD is not supported on the 7, as it does not support adopted internal storage. It would perform badly regardless of the SD card used, as the built in storage is significantly faster. Use the SD only for data, as intended; there should be plenty of internal space for apps with larger data stored on SD.
So.. I think ill go root way, something's so much better on rooted device. I like command my own device my way, not google's way..

Virtualising the SD Card

Hey Moto 6 dudes —
I picked-up a Moto G6 Plus today from Carphone Warehouse [UK]. However, I'm damned if I can work out how to:
virtualise the SD card (only Portable is an option at SD format or insert time)
move apps to the SD card (also not an option)
Q's
Am I missing something super-obvious and in plain-sight, or is this not enabled by Motorola?
When you insert an SD card, is virtualisation an option for you?
— any advice and insight very welcome.
Rik =)
Yes didn't see the option too. No adoptable storage.
The same in android one Nokia 7+.
Maybe the option is abandonned by manufacturer.
It is not an option anymore in Android since Nougat (not sure if Marsmallow neither).

Thanks good to know even if I neither used it. I prefer always use external storage mode.
What do you mean?? it's there!!! Click on the three dots top right of the screen.
Instructions:
Go to settings.
Select 'storage'.
Select your SD card. The file manager should open.
Tap the three dots in the top right corner, and select storage settings.
Format as internal.
(You can also open the file manager and select the SD in the right slide out menu instead of going to settings.)
you will need to format the card and use it as internal storage.
be warned the sd card will be slower than your phone's storage, how much depends on what you bought.
I split my SD to be semi-Adopted. 25% is internal and 75% portable. Works great so far!
http://blog.sam.liddicott.com/2016/02/andAndroid-6-semi-adopted-storage.html?
When you insert the card, you pick if it's portable or locked to the phone. Maybe you are looking for this option:
settings -> storage -> sd card -> 3 dots -> migrate data
