Using kernel tweeking apps and performance? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So for the first time I have not had to use any kernel tweaking apps like kernel auditor. However was considering trying to use kernel auditor on a stock rooted rom. What are your views please and how will using kernel auditer play out with Samsung, s own inbuilt performance and gaming settings?. Also those using any kernel tweaking apps, have you noticed any performance boosts as that is my main priority performance thanks.

[Q] overclock

i have gone back to my stock rom (jvo for stability) is there any way which i can overclock this rom , i was running ics at 1.4 ghz is there away for that overclock on stock
as far as I know, there is no possibility to overclock if you want to keep the stock kernel... however, you may use a different kernel (such as Midnight 0.9.0 or Semaphore 2.5.0). They come with an own settings-application which lets you overclock at least to 1200Mhz...
On a different but not unrelated topic, you may want to flash JW1 or JVT if you go for stability, they are more stable than JVO.
And I can say, JW1 in combination with Midnight kernel works pretty good, battery life is awesome and you can overclock (if you want to, that is)
got any software for overclock?
i am newbie...
If you will root your phone, you can use the app "tegrak overclock".
its free in the play store.

CM9

Hello. Loving the nightly builds. When will we get the over clocking function back? I miss the extra 300MHz I used to get.
Rooted phones can have that feature by using market apps . There are quite a few overclocking apps out there .
I used to use Antutu but this does not work. I'm sure they disabled the ability in the builds.
Maybe just flash another kernel? eg. Devil2 or Icy Glitch
I guess I could. I'm a little hesitant too change from the defaults. In the earlier builds OC was enabled and fine for me. Just wondering if it was set to be re-enabled.
You can flash Devil kernel 0.67b and OC via NStools.

Overclocking

I want to overclock my N7000's CPU and GPU. Please guide me how to do it safely. :cyclops:
N7000 Intl
Kernel: PhilZ cwm6 v5.06.1 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery
ROM: SlimBean 4.3 (Official Build 2.2-1745)
Your kernel has to allow you to do that and you have to use a program like cpu master, or You can search for overclocking in the settings.

So, what kernel allows you to do that?

The only way to overclock the n7000 worth mentioning
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tegrak.overclock.ultimate&hl=en
For gaming, i recommend:
Also, depending on how you use the phone you might want to underclock(and/or undervolt) the cpu (to avoid thermal throttle) and overclock the gpu (400 mhz works great on my phone, compared to stock 260)
For browsing the web and stuff like that:
consider overclocking the cpu to 1500-1600 (even 1650 has proven possible on my phone.)
try NX kernel (only for 4.2.2) or speedmod kernel.
for me samsung latest update is better for gaming because it has updated driver for mali (and you can use Titanium backup to freeze samsung's unwanted apps)

I am on asylum rum.
However, on this ROM, my GPU does not scale properly. So for gaming its not great.
NX kernel is great for gaming, unfortunately it's a bit dated.
In my opinion cm 4.3-based Roms work well.
But , changing ROM does not have as big an effect compared to overclocking the GPU.

thx for your post.
I will try it and if its working without any problems it comes in the next version
Sounds interresting what GeeckoDev found out. Looks like the new freque. also goot for non playing Note 1 users...
57hz - 59hz is completely safe. If you go beyond that, bootanimation will start to derp (turn off/on the screen once it's fully booted and you're good to go). Also you will have no access to the recovery. I only experienced that on AOSP, though. On Touchwiz I could go to 62hz without a problem. 64hz is fine with the workaround above.
It improves smoothness and lowers latency by quite a good margin (~17ms at 57hz, ~16ms at 60hz, ~15ms at 64hz).
Also, good luck with your kernel!
Had to go back to forest 1.90. On Your kernel cannot use gallery

Hello Bauner
First of all thank u very much for a great kernel. I have tested the non OC and OC 1.5. Everything runs smoothly except for stock video player that got busted with the OC'ed vers just like forest's. I have yet to test battery as I have just completed one battery cycle. Will update if there's anything pops.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
I also test it for 2 days on DU Rom and it is working smooth. I'm using the non OC version but it seems the kernel loves to stick on 1.1 and 1.4 speed which is why the battery drains much faster.
I also noticed that when Wifi is on and while screen off, it seems to drain also much faster, while on stock it consumes about 150-170mah on this kernel it consumes 230-250mah.
What I'm happy about this kernel though is that it seems to resolve my issue with Dynamic Colors on DU as I had no single reboots while using it. On stock kernel I had reboots when using Dynamic Colors.
Is there a way that instead of always using 1100 speed, it will use a lower frequency like 800 or 900?
Many thanks for the kernel!
Thanks bauner for the great kernel.my note now more energized and smooth after flash with oc1.5ghz tw....antutuscore got 17k..also problem on whatsapp memory leak seems resolved now

did you try to close all running apps and then check again?
if tehere are running apps that makes i/o can make this kernel running on higer frequencies because my modifications on ondemand.
you could try to use an tool like no-frills cpu control and try another cpu governor like pegasusq or conservative.
with this tool you also can see how long your cpu was running on every frequency

Thanks! Will test maybe tom and change my governor to pegasusq. Hopefully when on normal use it will use a lower frequency instead of 1100. I'm using BetterBatteryStats to see how long each frequency runs and the majority is 1400, 1100 and 100.
About the higher consume of battery, yes there is one app that was running and it was FB messenger though it was also running when I compared it to the stock kernel from DU.
I'll give feedback again once I'm done with testing.
with my rom+kernel it doesn't stay at high frequencies.
the attached screenshot was made a few minutes after boot complete
It says it couldn't mount storage/sdcard0 when trying to mount in recovery.
(KitKat version)
Hi bauner,
Mine also stay highest 1.1ghz..why never reach 1.5ghz..I'm ondemand/row..

Thanks lakame. Is it safe to use this triangleaway..this triangle due to flash via odin right..

It's an app. Nothing to do only follow the guides in the app. Sometimes you need the correct kernel for resetting... try it out.

Question Kernel Changes?

I understand we are not able to flash any custom kernel since there are none available with this device having limited dev support.
However, if rooted can we change settings with a kernel manager with the CPU and GPU? Installed EX Kernel Manger and set the CPU governor to "performance" but not seeing any speed or performance increases
