It should just detect you have TWRP, and download the full update (not the partial update for stock devices - which will result in a bootloop) and install properly.
I would advise to have Magisk on the phone, and flash it right away (after the update - before booting) as you will need this to get root again. And it will also (my understanding) prevent TWRP from being wiped out (which may happen if you reboot after the update w/o rooting first).
Alternately, you can get the full update zip from the Guides section, when it comes out. Then just flash in TWRP. Again, flash Magisk before rebooting.

[SOLVED] Samsung A5 2017 (A520F) Dual Sim - How to Root Nougat?

I flashed the Russian Firmware for my A5 (2017), but the Magisk 13.3 root method didnt work.
So far, I have failed in rooting Nougat with the following methods:
1. Magisk 13.3
2. CF Root although this is for Nougat. The phone goes into bootloop.
Currently, out of options as not too many options/info available for this phone.
Any definite way of rooting on this device?
[EDIT:]
SOLVED:
Flashed this version of SuperSU through TWRP and it worked!
Once installed SuperSU will ask KNOX detected, try to disable: Press OK.
Going to test it out & see if anything is off about it.
EDIT 2:
False Alarm. SuperSU flashed but does not have Root access as apss dont have SU Binary access. This is getting frustrating.
Any other way to root?

Hey! Thanks for the reply. So, I just Flash this in TWRP like all Zip's and then Flash Magisk?
EDIT: It seems the boot image is something I have already tried, except I flashed SuperSU after, instead of Magisk. If you don't mind, could you go through this post, as this is the only problem remaining.
Samsung A5 2017 [A520F} Root issue resolved.
Gonna leave the steps for future reference if anyone needs it:
Firmware, Magisk & dm_verity all linked in my original post.
1. Install Samsung Nougat 7.0 (Russian Version in this case)
2. Flash TWRP
3. Try to flash dm-verity through TWRP
3. If it doesn't work go to Wipe > data > Change System Files > FAT & F4 wipe to change
3. Flash dm-verity again. The .zip should flash successfully this time.
4. Flsh Magisk 13.3. It will flash.
and you are rooted!

How to update to Oreo from Magisk rooted stock rom OOS 4.5.1?

Can anyone help me with the steps to update to Android Oreo (OOS 5) from OOS 4.5.1 retaining root?
Below are the current setup of my phone
Rooted - Yes (Magisk version 14.0)
Recovery - TWRP version 3.1.1-2
Current Rom - Stock OOS 4.5.1
I haven't had any problems in updating earlier but now when I try to flash the full oreo rom from TWRP, I am getting error 7.
Below are the steps I followed.
Downloaded the full OTA zip.
Rebooted to recovery.
Unistalled Magisk.
Tried to flash the Oreo OTA zip. At this point TWRP showed error 7.
Reinstalled Magisk and rebooted to system.
Phone is working fine.
you need to use latest twrp for oreo, for example blue spark version, search for it on xda...
Follow this guide here:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/how-to-install-oos-5-0-over-rooted-4-5-1.684519/#post-17134194
It's exactly what you need.
All Oreo ROM threads clearly state under the "Instructions" heading, that you need either AkhilNarangs Modified TWRP or Blu_Sparks TWRP V50. Using stock TWRP would result in an error.
If the error may still persist, try flashing a different firmware.
Just to get some more clarity.
I have the original OTA full zip. Should I download the zip file from your thread?
Can I install the custom version of TWRP using the official TWRP app? I am bit confused on how to install it.
Is it important that I should use Magisk 14.3 or will v 14 have the same effect?
Hey there,
I can tell you how I have done it yesterday (successfully).
1. Update TWRP - I prefer blu sparks version 8.52 (Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=27225); you can do it by using your installed TWRP Version (Install .img)
2. Dirty flash OOS 4.5.1 again (to remove root / magisk) - once finished DO NOT reboot into system, reboot into Recovery/TWRP to verify the new version and afterwards to system
3. flash OOS 5.0 (Oreo) - dirty flash is okay
4. flash magisk Version 14.3
These are the steps I have followed yesterday and all is running perfect and without any problems.
BR
Which recovery is mentioned in this linked discussion resp. in the linked download? Is it blu_spark TWRP?
Regards
Clark
This worked perfectly for me.
Glad to hear that everything is good ?
I did the same and I was suddenly encrypted and no chance to get my data back. Still forcing clean my phone because I cannot format the device. I get always an error message in TWRP like: unable to format to remove encryption
I go crazy...
Enter recovery and wipe data and then cache.
Then reflash the rom and probably you will be good to go.

Magisk patching, recovery, and OTA questions.

I've just ordered the Mi Max 2 on Cyber Monday for $189.99 USD on GB, I've already applied and gotten approved for Xiaomi bootloader unlock.
While waiting for my phone to arrive I've been trying to do the necessary preperations for flashing Magisk.
I've never used Magisk before as my current Zenfone 5 uses SuperSU.
According to the release thread for Magisk the new Magisk Manager can patch the boot.img directly.
My question is, will the below steps work?
-unlock the bootloader
-install magisk manager
-download the full rom for the mi max 2 and patch it with the magisk manager
-flash the patched rom?
Would this work and would I be able to receive OTA updates using this method?
I'm asking because using TWRP means no OTA updates and that's a pain.
I want Magisk just for root, adblock, and camera api module to use google camera HDR+
I can't find any answers to my questions anywhere as all guides and threads talk about using the TWRP method and all say TWRP can't recieve OTA.

if you rooted forget about OTA updates.
u need to download recovery flashable update zip files against small size OTA's
this is a little hack for OTA updates.(if you have a stock recovery.img) ive not tried though
flash existing flashable rom. this removes (magisk / supersu / all system modification )
flash stock recovery
flash ota update via stock recovery
again u can flash magisk to get root.
u need to repeat the whole process whenever a ota is available (i would prefer to download the recovery flashable zip and flash it in TWRP)

no need to patch rom/ boot.img just flash magisk.zip in twrp it patches automatically.
manual patching is required only for certain specific devices.

So, worst case scenario I'll still need to TWRP and install that way. Is the current TWRP compatible with MIUI 9 on the mi max 2?
MIUI 9 has been rolled out the the Max 2 locally.

Magisk update safe?

I currently have installed Magisk v18.1 and Magisk Manager 7.1.2. Both have updates. I've read the forums and some people have reported boot loops and I just don't want to deal with any of that. So did anyone update to the latest Magisk and Magisk Manager with any problems? Did you just press the "update" button within Magisk Manager or did you have to modify/compile it somehow? Which one do I update first or do I update them both at the same time? Details are always appreciated. ?
I just used the zip file and updated it through TWRP and the Manager is just updated via an apk.
I don't have TWRP installed. At the time I rooted my RP2 there wasn't a proven way to install TWRP at least that I could find. Is there one now?
I'm just talking about installing the updates through Magisk. But having TWRP that could perform a nand and data backup would put me at ease. Where is the guide to install TWRP?
The arter97 kernel has it built in.
