My wife's Sprint branded Note 8 has a rich communications option which, according to Reddit, is the latest iteration of Enhanced Messaging found on the Note 5 and S6. However, on the unlocked Note 8 I bought myself thru Samsung direct, the stock Messaging app has absolutely no options for Enhanced Messaging or Rich Communications. I don't want to use Google Messaging because it's missing features that the stock Messaging app has, such as the live message (if that is what it's called). Is there anything I can do to have my cake and eat it too or am I going to be stuck with google mesaging?
Unlocked phones won't have specific carrier options installed. You need Sprint's CSC to get those features.

either buy a phone from Sprint, or, root your phone, and install a Sprint CSC on it

Need to be rooted. If not you can flash the entire Sprint firmware.

Another option to try is use Shortcut Master or the Phone INFO app & launch 467 (IMS settings) to see if you can enable those features.

You should be able to enable VoLTE & RCS (advanced messaging) through the IMS settings I talked about above but I don't think you can get WIFI calling without TMO CSC.

Interesting thanks for comfirming, for some reason I thought VoLTE & Wifi calling wouldn't work for tmobile but then again I don't have an unlocked U. But yeah you should be able to enable RCS in the IMS settings.

Okso using phone info app it says that my active csc is spr which I'm assuming is sprint... If i have that csc then I should have the rich communications option in the Samsung messaging app but I don't.
Wow! The strangest thing just happened! I was trying to launch that 467 or whatever it was and it wasn't working so I gave up. Put my phone in charge a couple hours ago and come back to some text messages. One of these messages is from 9197 and says messenger's enhanced features have been enabled. (confirmation ID: ######)
Lets hope it works now!
Edit; nope. Still no option anywhere. I even force closed messages, and rebooted the device. Upon reboot I got the same message again from 9197 with a new confirmation number. This is odd.

Since I still rely on Verizon's Visual Voicemail, I was a little annoyed when I noticed that the VVM icon was missing. After downloading a Verizon VVM version apk and attempting install, it states that another program exists with the same signature. I looked for the App under Apps and cannot find it. This is while looking at all apps as well.... not just enabled apps. I'm assuming the com.samsung.vvm exists in the apps directory that I cannot see without root.
Does anyone know a way around this without root? I check my voicemail way too much the old way with *86 since I have no way of knowing if I have a voicemail. Sometimes calls just don't come through where I'm at.

Any chance of getting a Verizon Visual Voicemail apk that will work on an unlocked phone?
I asked a Verizon salesperson if there were any drawbacks to buying an unlocked S8. None, she said. Maybe she honestly didn't know, but not having Visual Voicemail is making me think I've wasted $700.
I tried the YouMail workaround and found my voicemails delayed by up to 12 hours, so that's not going to cut it. I already use Google Voice for my work line, so that's not a great option either.
Hoping someone can help me salvage something from my mistake so that I can get the most from this otherwise awesome phone.
Someone should ask jkruse he find ways on the S7 edge without root.
I think he's still researching

I don't know why Verison's VVM is so much better than other options. I use Google Voice and get visual print outs of VM. I may just be ignorant of the benefits of Verizon's app, but there must be others out there that are just as good.
I just need some app that tells me I have a voicemail from Verizon. I do not want to forward my phone to some other system for voicemail.
I have an APK for the VVM application. That is the point of this post. It will not allow me to install it because it says that an app with the same signature is already installed. Since I do not have Root, I cannot browse the root apps and remove the old one or fix it's issues since it doesn't show in the apps list for all apps.
Can you post a link to the APK? I'm in the same situation.

This was from a titanium backup on my other phone. Just won't load because of the signature issue on my phone. And I don't have root to fix that.
Maybe someone can do the proper decompile and modify the signature for the APK... then Maybe non-rooted users can install?
anyone out there please give me something. i have the unlocked s8+ on verizon and no voicemail. if someone leaves a voicemail, i will not get an icon i would have to call my voicemail to see. i would be fine not having VVM but i dont even get an icon. WTF??? I cant get the google VVM to work some how....tried how everyone else is doing it voicemails are not sent to my phone.....sooo stupid....

well I got mine resolved. Called Verizon, asked for tech support, told her I had an unlocked s8+ and it's not displaying voicemail notifications and to take everything vvm away and go to basic. She had to look into it but then told me to restart my phone, she left a message and fixed. Now displaying notification.
What do you mean "take everything VVM away"?

I also bought a carrier-free unlocked S8 and was told by Verizon tech support that I wouldn't be able to install VVM and would have to use a third party app to get voicemail notification. Was your phone an unlocked carrier-specific phone?

That was just the wording I used to imply to the Verizon tech that I thought would be full blown but was actually promptly helpful. I wanted no vvm on my account to just have old-school basic. That's how I said it hoping they would understand. You won't get vvm unless you use 3rd party apps line goggle voice which I couldn't get to work that essentially forward your voicemail to 3rd party apps. Old-school works fine for me. I'm forced to use it on my pos iPhone 5s for work anyways.

Thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to flash the Verizon firmware and see if that works. It would be so much nicer if I could just install the app.
So, I downloaded n app called shortcut master lite cuz I member here on XDA recommended it to fix LTE issues. Don't know of his name but I will edit with his name for credit. But I turned advanced LTE on(u must search for it).Did not notice any difference in LTE. Tried it initially but did not have VOLTE while making outgoing call. But when a call comes in and I answer LTE stays connected. So I went back into the shortcut app and looked up LTE Functionality. Found a setting in there which says VOLTE Test UI then in that setting I turned on the first 2 options which then have me VOLTE both on incoming and outgoing calls. Not sure if it breaks anything but I have mine off cuz not sure if it breaks anything.

so for better instructions to ppl,
1)use short cut master
2)Search for enhancedlteservices (should be com.android.phone.EnhancedLteServices)
3)Launch it and enable Enhanced LTE Services.
4)Next go to com.test.LTEfunctionality and launch LTEFunctionalityTest
5)Go to VoLTE Test UI and Enable first 2 settings to on
6)Extra precaution, restart phone
In no way i'm taking credit for finding this out. just made the steps more simple. Thanks OP for posting this. Please use at your own discretion. I don't know if this will screw up anything but i'm getting both voice and data at same time.

Same here, Note8 Dual SIM on Vodafone UK. Stock BTU firmware. It would be great to have this option.
Do I need to root to use the Master life app? If Yes, it is a no go for me.
So on the other thread you said that you got the config messages from Vodafone on your Dual SIM Note8?
I get this: "It looks like you?ve swapped your SIM or updated your device. To continue using data and sending picture messages, you need to update your settings manually, as your device doesn?t support automatic settings updates. Get started at vodafone.co.uk/settingsinfo"
no worries man, I don't have the duos with me now so will double check when I get home but I'm nearly sure it is there, it's multi csc XEU
ok, on my duos I didn't have it at first but after putting my sim card into it and going through pretty much everything ims related using Shortcut Master lite pressing launch where allowed and enabling things and also a few restarts, I was eventually prompted to enter a phone number on restart to avail of RCS and it is now showing under message settings, if possible on my duos it should be possible on yours

it's the exact same on mu single sim bought through Vodafone Ireland if that info helps any
I've read some posts here (and other sources), seems WiFi calling, HD calling are supported and there's a couple work arounds for the camera Shutter sound. What about voicemail? Prefer to go unlocked and keep the bloat ware off. Any other surprises on an unlocked N9?
Coming from Sprint where I had to buy their LG V20 (after a very bad N4 experience) to keep most of these calling features. But it's time for a change now that I moved and T-Mob has better coverage than Sprint (probably true everywhere).
Using note 9 unlocked on t mobile. Everything works except video calling but if you really want that, then you can flash just the tmobile CSC file via Odin. That will add the video calling tab back on the dialer. It will not add the t mobile bloat apps but i do believe you will get the t mobile splash screens on boot/shut down
Thanks for the response and suggestion, that's very helpful.
I tried downloading the Visual Voicemail app from the Play Store on the U1 and had no luck getting it to work. The same happened when I had an S9+ running the U1 firmware. When you flash to the TMB U firmware though, it is included and does work. If you choose to flash to the TMB U though, you will want to brush up on some ADB commands to remove some of the T-Mobile bloat, which is still a lot less than most other carriers.

No such thing as USERDATA CSC. USERDATA and CSC are two different files in the Odin image. In this case he is saying you should flash the TMB CSC (not HOME CSC, since that won't do anything) and the feature will appear for you. I am most curious about this, since it would mean applying U build files to a U1 build. I don't have much experience with that.
I recently bought an unlocked U1 but flashed the TMB U firmware on it a few days ago. I only did so because I heard the data speeds were substantially higher (can anyone confirm/deny this?).
Also, is there any way to get visual voicemail to work through a phone app? It's just so seamless on something like an iPhone or Pixel but I've never gotten it to work on my Note. I really don't want to use a whole separate app just for that.

Also, is there any way to get visual voicemail to work through a phone app? It's just so seamless on something like an iPhone or Pixel but I've never gotten it to work on my Note. I really don't want to use a whole separate app just for that.

Have you tried going into Settings, Apps, and enabling permissions for the app? For some reason, the app doesn't have any permissions when you install it from the Play Store. Try giving it Storage, Phone, and Contacts to see if that gets it working for you.

What you heard about speed is a rumor. The speed is no different on U1.

Do you mean to say if I give the standalone visual voicemail app permissions that it'll show up accessible in my phone app (as an extra voicemail tab)? If so that'd be great but from the way you worded it I assume you mean just using the app itself which I was trying to avoid.

Good to know; thank you. From my understanding then it doesn't really matter except for updates? I got the impression the unlocked gets quarterly security updates while the T-mobile generally monthly (but a month behind). Pretty sure they're both on the Sept. update right now so it's hard for me to tell.

I am not sure about a third party vieual voicemwil app. It can't hurt to give it a try though. I was referring to the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app.

Ah ok, understood. I've always used phones that had the visual voicemail integrated with the phone app, so it's unfortunate that doesn't seem to be possible in this case.
I have a Verizon S10 that I bought from Samsung directly. I would like to get the Verizon Call filter app that was just released but everything that I read says the app should be preloaded on the phone. It's not on mine but I have the rest of the Verizon bloatware. Does anyone have the call filter yet? Perhaps someone that bought their phone directly from Verizon could respond.
Thanks.

Maybe get someone to install APK extractor and see if they can send you the app. I extracted the Visual Voicemail app ftom my S9 and installed it on the S10.
Thanks. I will have to look for the APK
It was originally named "Caller ID" before this update. It was one of the Verizon bloat that I had disabled because you had to pay for it originally. If you search the Play Store for " Call Filter", it should be one of the first ones. you will need to re-enable it before you update.

Thank you. I had Caller Name ID disabled. I re-enabled it and it immediately updated to "Call Filter".

Don't you still have to pay for it? I'm getting a message saying that I am not subscribed...

No, you don't have the pay for the very basic features (spam detection, spam filter, report numbers), but for the rest of the features, you do.
Here is how to enable the free features (multiple ways, taken from the Verizon site):
Android
Open the Call Filter app.
Open the menu and tap Account.
Tap the Subscription status section.
Tap See other options.
Tap Yes.
Tap OK.
You've successfully enrolled in the free version of Call Filter.
Online in My Verizon
Go to the Products & Apps page in My Verizon.
Tap or click Get Products.
Select Call Filter Free in the dropdown under Choose your product.
Tap or click Get it Now.
If you have multiple lines on your account, select the ones you want to subscribe to the free version of Call Filter.
Tap or click Purchase.
You've successfully enrolled in the free version of Call Filter through My Verizon.
My Verizon App
Open the My Verizon app
Tap the menu in the top left.
Tap Account.
Tap Add-Ons.
Tap Essentials.
Find Call Filter and tap Learn More.
If you have multiple lines on your account, select the ones you want to subscribe to the free version of Call Filter.
Tap Confirm.
You've successfully enrolled in the free version of Call Filter in the My Verizon App.
And this is Verizon's page with the Call Filter information: https://www.verizonwireless.com/solutions-and-services/call-filter/
no wonder i'm not able to enable it. i'm on prepaid.
i go to their term and conditions.
"Call Filter is currently available to postpaid wireless customers only"
