Enabling ANT+ on MIUI ROMS (and possibly others) - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Guides, News, & Discussion

While going through the many system application and services running in the background I stumbled upon ANT HAL service.
After downloading ANT Radio Service , ANT + Plugin Service and ANT USB Service I had a fully functional ant+ setup confirmed by the ANT Tester app.
I quickly put on my Garmin heartrate strap and I validated that connectivity is working properly.
Since ANT+ is one of the strongholds of Samsung phones I find it is funny that Xiaomi do not mentions this at all in their specs
With such a great battery this phone could turn into a cheap replacement for Garmin/Polar/Wahoo/etc handlebar computer.

[Q] Has anyone got a ANT+ heart rate monitor working with any apps?

Hi,
As the questions says, I've got a garmin heartrate monitor working with the ANT+ app but I can't get any other app to see it (mainly runtastic pro) - wondering if anyone has any success with it?
N.
I might trying updating to the latest firmware, currently on 14.1.g.1.518.
I've got a Garmin monitor, and a PowerCal monitor running with IPBike. I tried to get the Garmin Fit app working but there's no option to add the sensors.
Iam using My tracks and Garmin heart rate monitor.Works well.Dont forget to download and install ANT Radio Service.

Anyone using ANT+ with anything but the stock ROM?
I'm using rooted stock rom(NUT .757), but ANT+ is not working.

Oh no that is a nightmare. Maybe I won't be upgrading then!
I'm on NUT's .136 and ANT+ is unreliable but just about works. For example when I run an ANT+ app, the bluetooth icon appears. If I close bluetooth, ANT+ stops working! Both bluetooth and wifi continually switch themselves on without any intervention from me on this ROM. Anyway, the ANT+ often mysteriously stops working during a (bike) ride and I either have to toggle bluetooth on and off (twice) or reboot to get it working again.
Good luck, I do not think many Android devs are also fitness orientated.....
Doh, you cannot turn off BT, that's how the ANT+ works on the device.

Interesting - I was using my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with a ANT+ dongle which did not exhibit this behaviour i.e. I did not need bluetooth to be switched on to enable the ANT+. And my understanding is bluetooth and ANT+ are separate radios. Do you know different?

That because Bluetooth and ANT+ are integrated in the same Chip so you have to enable Bluetooth to let it work. In Samsung probably they are separated. Many Manufacturing use different Chips Radio so some can have this behaviour.
I recently upgraded to the latest (4.4.2), lo and behold bluetooth is not activated when I use ANT+

That don't mean Bluetooth and ANT+ are not in the same chip.

Issues & Questions from an Android user

Hey guys
So I recently got the Nokia Lumia 1020 after being an android user since day one. Rooted and everything
I have couple of issues and questions that have arise since then.
1. How can I change the search button to bring up google instead of bing? I have read that you have to change your language to Russia but I would not want to do that
2. With my Note 3, HTC one and other previous android devices, I was able to use maps with speech and use the FM radio on my deck together. Android would just mute the FM radio and give me the next direction.
With WP8, it seems like I have to select bluetooth source in order for speech to work, however I can no longer listen to the radio at the same time. Is there a fix/workaround for this?
3. NFC tags.. I recently bought a bunch.. however I noticed that you can't have the nfc tags to change the settings but just launch the settings app? So I would need 3 NFC tags to turn off BT, turn off wifi and enable gps? Seems..... any fix?
Thanks
- Sashi
1: Basically not possible until we "root" the 1020. Maybe if a bootloader exploit is found. Otherwise, only devices sold in markets where Bing doesn't have much presence - such as Russia, I guess - support that option. You can install apps for other search engines, but the button is sort of "hard-coded" to the Bing app.
2: WP7 used the Headset mode of Bluetooth (Hands-Free Profile) for driving directions, but that was built into the OS. Apparently Here Drive can't or won't do that (I consider this a regression, since my car doesn't support the audio profile) so the car needs to be using BT audio (A2DP, I think) to give directions. However, as a work-around, you can of course play media *from the phone* and it should work fine (it will be muted while directions are spoken). Whether you use internally stored MP3s, streaming music from the built-in Xbox Music (formerly Zune Pass), one of many apps (such as Pandora), or the phone's built-in FM receiver (requires that headphone wires be connected, since that's what it uses as an antenna, but otherwise possible), you can have your music and directions both.
3: Yeah, for reasons of their own, Microsoft hasn't exposed any way for third-party developers to toggle various settings directly. With that said, though... There's basically no need to turn either BT or WiFi off; they draw extremely little power when not in use (and by default, WiFi turns off while the screen is off and there's no external power anyhow). As for GPS, unlike Android's incomprehensibly wasteful approach, on WP8 it is *always* inactive unless an app or OS feature is explicitly using it, so as long as you remember to close the navigation app when you're done with it, there's no need to manually turn off location services.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for 1 & 3
However with #2, I would like to have my USB that is plugged into my car deck AND driving directions at the same time. With android this is possible... but not with WP8
What? I must be misunderstanding you, because there's no problem at all with having USB plugged in while getting directions. Or did you mean you're getting the music off the USB (you said radio before, which the phone is capable of doing by itself) and hence the USB is a different input that the BT?
My usual approach in my car is cigarette lighter -> USB adapter -> phone -> ripping cable (I'd use BT if my car would do it for music) -> car stereo AUX port, and that works fine for getting both music and directions. Swap out the aux port and the ripping cable for Bluetooth and it will still work fine (as I've found when I had to rent cars).
That's correct, my deck has a Bluetooth source as well as a USB source.
I have to select Bluetooth source in order to get voice directions to the car speakers but if I select USB source the voice navigation no longer works
Yeah, that's a pain. Is there some reason you can't play your music/audiobooks/podcasts/whatever through the phone, though? Yeah, it's annoying to need to change what works, but on the plus side, it's all your media on one fewer device than you're using now.

Rear camera view on PHONE running android auto

Hi guys,
I have thoroughly searched the forum, but I could not find an answer reffering to the use case of the car running android auto on the phone, not on the head unit.
Summary: is there a way to reproduce the rear camera functionality of a headunit running android auto in your phone instead?
I am aware there are video WiFi transimiters, also available apps to go with them, pick a rear camera from amazon and off you go, by launching the app on your phone, you can now see the rear camera.
HOWEVER, if android auto is running I would like this app to launch automatically as I put the rear gear in (hence, enabling current to the camera and having something to look at). For the apps and wifi transmiters, it seems they are built to just be continually run, not only on rear mode. See on youtube "DIY Inexpensive Digital Wireless RV Backup camera- Review EC170 and 903W TrA" (can´t post a link since I am a new user!)
It seems like the apps available are linked to a particular wifi transmitter? Or are they available for any device?
Do you know of an app that as soon as current is given to the rear camera, it will launch the camera app (overriding android auto typical screen, just like it happens in AA headunits with rear camera), and as current is cut from the camera, the app will shut down and let AA continue its business? (all of that without shuting down AA in the first place, just overlaying the camera view).
In case an app like that was not available, how difficult can it be to program? I could potentially be willing to pay.
I am not sure if I explained myself correcty. Let me know if you have any further questions, thanks in avance!
I doubt it. Head units which support cameras do so outside of AA (the camera simply takes the screen away from AA). And they have a wire connected to the backup lights to signal when to switch to the camera. And I'm not aware of any backup cameras which use WiFi or Bluetooth (which doesn't have enough bandwidth anyway) - they're either hardwired or use a proprietary wireless link to a dedicated receiver which connects to the head unit.
So, there are three problems to solve. How does the phone know the car is in reverse? How does the video get to the phone? Even if you found a WiFi backup camera, you'd need to be running a hotspot on the phone, and the time it would take to connect would be unreasonable - head units only take a second or so to display when you start backing up.
Finally, what's the app which ties it all together? Even if there were solutions for the first two, simply buying an AA head unit would be cheaper than paying for an app to be developed. So, why not just buy a head unit? Or even just a backup camera solution with its own screen?

[How-to] Connecting ant+ devices to your oneplus 6t

Hello all,
it’s hard to find any information about the compatibilty between ANT+ devices and the oneplus 6t. This how to will help you to connect ant+ devices such as heart rate chest belt or food pods. After some trial and error I found a way how to connect such devices for the oneplus 6t. Probably it‘s working for older oneplus devices as well.
I use the oneplus 6t to collect my running data from my old forerunner 310xt. It‘s really convenient that I don‘t need any notebook to get the training information from my watch.
That‘s how I did it:
Install from the store the relevant apks:
ANT Radio Service
ANT+ Plugins Service
Adapt ANT Radio Service restrictions
Go into the App preferences of the ANT Radio Service and enable the restriction „use ANT hardware“.
Enable Bluetooth on the smartphone to connect your ANT+ devices to fitness apps. For example Strava can now connect to your ANT+ chest band.
Happy running!
Knobias
Thank you Knobias it works again on my op5

Is there a Samsung watch App that in realtime exchanges the GPS track to a Samsung (or Android) smartphone?

Anyone know of a hiking GPS tracking app that runs on Samsung watch Active 2 and uses Active 2 or 3's hardware GPS, but it allows the track to be shown on a large screen Android/Samsung phone in real time (Not after the activity is completed)
I have tried both Locusmaps and Samsung health app which runs well - Locusmap does not use GPS hardware on the watch (it uses GPS from phone), and Samsung health app does not export track in real time to phone screen.
