N1 owners! How long have you gotten away with the $15 data plan?

I'm sure there's been plenty of posts regarding this (and I'll probably get some flack from moderators), but I thought I should revisit this issue and get everyone's thoughts before I jump on the bandwagon.
Anyone here got the dreaded text, automatically switched, or loss data services altogether simply because you were using the AT&T $15 MediaNet plan? Or better yet, the $10 family plan?
I'm on the $15 plan that was originally used by a lowly 3G featurephone, and have never upgraded to a branded smartphone with AT&T. Just wondering if there are folks with my same situation who've taken the plunge into Nexus One waters. So...are you still swimming?

I've had the $4.99 T-Zones plan since 2008 and it still is going strong. I've never bought a subsidized phone. Not one single complaint. Not on AT&T obviously. Oops.

In short, your account needs to have smartphone exclusion on it to prevent your data plan from jumping to the $30 smartphone data plan. If it doesn't have this rare SOC code, it's difficult to get, and you won't be able to do much of anything to stop the change from happening.

I'm aware of the smartphone exclusion status. But no one seems to have a clear answer as to "how" to get that status. Multiple stories abound: I've heard that you have to have had a smartphone with no data prior to Sept '09. I've also heard that folks who have a dumbphone (featurephone) with a 3G data plan ($15) are also excluded because they've never upgraded to a branded smartphone thru ATT. I'm on the latter situation. Does anyone here used to be on the $15 MediaNet+dumbphone combo and are now using a Nexus One?

If it helps, I never purchased ANY phone through AT&T since I started service with them in mid-2008 since I always used unlocked phones and I still got hit with the text. The only reason I have the smartphone exclusion is because I called AT&T when they switched my data plan automatically and pitched a huge fit. I still can't get them to add it to the other line on my account.
So I guess try to talk to the customer "solutions" team about canceling your service and see if they'll add it for you?

I am using AT&T Nexus One from the day they were out (about 3 weeks now), I am still on $10 family MediaNet plan.
I have never bought smartphone from AT&T, perhaps that is the reason, or they haven't done their sweep yet.

That makes sense. But have you, or ever, upgraded your plan from a $15 to a $30 plan, and then back down to $15? (Or something to that effect.) I'm just wondering that since you never bought a device from them, a change in your data plan might also trigger the auto-switch? Just covering all bases how an auto-switch (or change in the smartphone exclusion status) can be triggered by either device upgrade or data plan upgrade thru AT&T.

Excellent! Good luck on that. Please keep us posted if the status on your data ever changes. I'm gonna try using the N1 under the $15 MediaNet and see how much mileage I can get out of it.

Well; I have some bad news for you guys that think your getting lucky by tricking them.
At&t does not have this phone registered in their system. So if you call them and have them change the IMEI number to reflect this phone, it will come up as unknown. So the only option they have for a data plan is the $15 plan ($10 if you have a family plan).
The only reason why I know this: I came from an iPhone to this, so I had to call them and change the IMEI number.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but as long as At&t does not register this in their system, we will get the cheaper plan.
And usually, unless they sell it, they won't register it. So we are good to go for the life of this phone.

I'm glad you asked because I did buy two 3GS's from them and flipped them on eBay for a ridiculous profit. I had to call AT&T right after I bought them to have them remove the smartphone data plan since I wasn't using the iPhones anymore.
This could be part of the reason why my account triggered the change.

I have been on a grandfathered-in mediaworks package for ~8 years now ($20 for unlimited data, 1500sms and 200mms). AT&T has never once changed my plan on me and they never will. I'm out of contact

I had the T-Mobile version on ATT shortly after the tmobile versions launch. I was using the 10$ medianet plan for about a week until I got the dreaded text. I thought it was a glitch so I went online and changed it back. A few minutes later, I got the text again. I sold my nexus and bought a milestone until the ATT version came out. I came to the conclusion that I would pay for the 30$ smartphone plan if I was using the ATT version because I would be getting 3G. I just got the ATT version in today and havnt switched plans yet. My buddy works for ATT and asked for my IMEI number to get credit for the switch from medianet to smartphone plan. He called me back saying that my new ATT nexus' IMEI number wasn't registering meaning I could use the media net plan. There have been some rumors that ATT put a cap on the speeds of the media net plan, so he asked me to run a speed test. My speeds show that I was getting normal 3g speeds for my area(786 dl). Ill post again if ATT gets ahold of this batch of IMEI numbers and auto adds the smartphone plan.

Excellent! That definitely got me on the bandwagon. Just ordered the N1 and should be getting it Wednesday. I'll keep ya'll posted with the hopes that the IMEI batch for these new N1's will be kept hidden from ATT. Good luck to all!

I'm confused... Why were you guys giving att the imei #s? I bought my tmobile version unlocked through google and never had to let tmo know... I just dropped my SIM card in from my G1 and went on my way.

So how much data do you guys get for $15?

What's the cheapest AT&T plan that supports tethering?

Hi. I have the AT&T version of the NexusOne (running Cyanogen). I don't have a SIM card or any AT&T plan. I would like to get the cheapest data plan ('don't need voice) and would like to use the phone as a hotspot or tether. I see this on AT&T's website: DataPro
2GB of data for $25 per month. That sounds pretty good to me. Would tethereing or hotspot work with that?

Yes it would work just fine, that's the plan I have too. Don't tell att, just enjoy your tethering.
The cheaper unlimited 15 dollar plan works too, but somehow att flagged nexus ones for this for some weird reason.

I'm sure you are correct, but I am curious... How many gBs have you been using per month? The ATT rep I work with says there is only a certain usage that will be tolerated in this manner before you get the no-no notification. Can't remember the amount he claimed.

I use only 1 to 2 gb a month anyway.

Tmobile $30 Walmart plan tethering

I have the Tmobile $30 5gb prepaid plan. I was using the native tethering but it seems that Tmobile can detect when I'm tethering. When I visit some websites from the tethered laptop it forwards me to Tmobile upsale webpage telling me that I should purchase tethering plan.
Some of the websites that still works on the tethered laptop are:
Http://www.Google.com but the search results get forwarded.

This is the first time I encountered with this issue on the nexus one with Tmobile.
Is this permanent or temporary? Is there any way to bypass? Or am I flagged by Tmobile?
I keep record of my usage and I usually use about 2gb per month.

I have a rooted G2 with Andromadus Audacity Beta 3 and I have the same issue with T-Mobile. Does anyone know if T-Mo is actually able to detect native tethering? I work around for this will be greatly appreciated. I will rather not waste $14.99 a month in a unfair tethering charge when my data plan is still going to suffer tottering after 5GB. I think that money could better be donated to our developers.

Tether on unlimited AT&T plan with Developer Edition?

Does anyone know if we will be able to utilize cellular data tethering using the HTC One developer edition on an unlimited AT&T plan? That could put the developer edition over the top for me compared to the subsidized device from AT&T. Thanks.

Its the same device, if its not in your contract that you can tether then no you can't without violating your contract.
There are various ways to tether if you wish to, but the device isn't going to magically trick at&t that you aren't tethering

When I got the unlocked galaxy nexus tethering wasn't disabled like it has been on every subsidized android device I've owned. Wasn't sure if that was a nexus thing or an unlocked/unbranded device thing.

So does anyone know if tethering would be enabled or is it something that AT&T has the ability to block from the carrier end?

On the developer edition it should work without having to pay extra. AT&T branded phones have addition software that ties into your account to allow or disallow tethering. This won't have that software obviously.

It's likely that you will be able to tether, since the phone will not check with the carrier if the tethering feature is enabled. Regardless, AT&T will still notice that you are tethering, because they can differentiate packets originating from other devices. If you use a lot of data, even just a short tether will raise a flag and you'll get a text or a letter from AT&T, saying that they want to switch your unlimited plan to a capped one.

I bet HTC would or will be providing the dev imei's to att since they all are in bed with the useless carriers.

I've literally been using tethering without paying for it on my unlimited plan for years by buying unlocked phones. They have never noticed. I don't go crazy with it though. I use around 500MB via tethering each month when I'm on the go and need to get some work done.

This is very good news if true. I'll be going with the dev edition.

I'm using a new plan they have called 'mobile share' and it has tethering included for free. I use so little data I went with the 1GB plan (I'm almost always on wifi) but an upgrade isn't terribly expensive.
I had been using a 550 minute, 300MB data plan with no texting for my wife and I but this new plan only costs $15 more and gives us unlimited calls and texting with free tethering on 1GB shared data.

Honestly, if ATT does it like VZW, they have a built-in "entitlement check" in the database of the phone that tells it to talk to the mobile carrier for authentication.
I'm not sure if this phone will try to handshake with ATT for verification, but if it doesn't that is a huge boost to people who'd normally have to pay for it or change plans.

Tethering has nothing to do with your IMEI. I've been tethering on a AT&T branded One X (purchased directly from AT&T) practically since it was released last May. The phone will tether properly with any custom or stock rooted ROM, except for AT&T based ROMs; and on the AT&T based ROMs, it will tether with the proper hack.
My bet is that the unlocked One will be able to tether out of the box. But we won't know for certain until the devices are delivered, and somebody tries it.
The other thing to note, as another mentioned, AT&T can (and does) check on the network side for tethering. The exact methods and policies are unknown to probably anyone outside AT&T. But from what folks on XDA suspect, is that if your network usage is high, it will put you under scrutiny by AT&T. They will then look at the data packets, and see you are tethering. They give you one warning by SMS, and if they catch you tethering again, they will add a tethering plan on your account.
However, the monitoring process seems far from consistent. A few XDA users have reported receiving the tethering warning, despite swearing up and down that they never tethering even once. On the other hand, as I mentioned, I've tethered occasionally for years, and never received a warning. But I only use it for limited times, and for limited data amounts. Typically only while traveling, in a hotel where WiFi is not available, WiFi signal is too crappy, or WiFi charge by the hotel is excessively expensive. And then, I usually only tether to down/upload work emails and files, then disconnect.
Keep your usage low, and stay under the radar (so to speak) and you may be okay. But there are no guarantees.

nexus 6, AT&T and wireless tethering

I hope this doesn't sound like a sob story but I live in rural TN. The best I can get to my house is dial-up internet. Therefore I have AT&T as my wireless subscriber because I use my cell phone as a hotspot and I actually get 4g LTE at my house. I just saw AT&T's unlimited plan deal and I also saw that tethering/hotspot is not allowed on this plan. My question is if I choose the unlimited data plan from AT&T, can I somehow work around their hotspot block or is there something I can do to my phone to work around this? Is this even possible?

Or install a rom with tethering check disabled.

Whatever the tether unlock method for marshmallow is will work and also custom roms that disable the tether check but keep in mind that since it goes against your plan and this new unlimited plan doesn't carry the whole idea of "I've been on this plan since I got it and that means I'm a super loyal customer and entitled to everything." Then I wouldn't be surprised if At&t would be more likely to kick these new unlimited plan users to mobile share for tethering than old unlimited plans but I also wouldn't be surprised if rural customers would be more likely to get a break on that due to less congested network. It's worth a shot, really the worst thing that could happen is getting put back on your old plan if At&t chooses to force that. and being stuck with a directv subscription assuming you switched from dish or something.

I don't get cable out this way so I'm on DirecTV anyway. The only thing I'm worried about is losing the good plan I have now if the unlimited one doesn't work out. I get 40GB for $75, it would be a shame to lose that.

did you have any luck with keeping tethering? i've been hesitant to make the change because i dont want to lose my hotspot.

I'm on the fence about making the transition also, I don't want to lose my plan or hotspot. I waiting to see if someone has success.

I tether on AT&Ts cricket service regularly to kids iPads and nexus tablets. No issues at all.

You will get throttled after 22GB
