What Insurance For Note 8? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I understand not everyone thinks insurance is worth it. But I want insurance on my Note 8. For those that DO have insurance who are you going through? I am on Verizon but haven't signed up for Assurion yet...I went with Squaretrade with my Nexus 6p but never had to do a claim. Which insurance has the best bang for buck, is reliable, and won't break the bank...I know some offer lost/stolen coverage and some extend the manufacturers warranty...
What did you choose and why?

I've always just gone with carrier insurance. It's easy and if something goes wrong, I have a three Verizon stores within driving distance of my house. No need to ship anything anywhere. I've never looked anywhere else, so I don't know it's best bang for the buck. It works for me, though.
In all the years that I've had phones, I've only had to file one claim. That was on a Palm Centro so yea, long time ago.

Or get wells fargo cash wise credit card. Pay ur phone bill using the credit card and u r covered.

Which version of verizon's insurance did you get? When I had their insurance they only had one option. Now they have like 3-4

I'm not sure which one it is. It costs $9.99 per month. I have it for both my phone and my wife's. We just carried it over from our Note 4s and the S3s before them.

"worth ave" and samsungs own insurance are tops in my book for the cost/offer ratio.

Bought my Note 8 outright so I put Samsung Premium Care on it.

How many people actually have that AT&T insurance?

Trying to debate if I should get it or not. Hear they will replace it no matter what...
Only $5 a month plus since I got my phone and do the math of 2 years, it's obviously only $120 which is still cheaper than most Captivates sell for.
Opinions?
I have always paid the $5 extra for the insurance. I have also used it a couple times.

I used it for obvious reasons, phone replacement and the deductible was $50. The insurance is worth it. It is $5 extra a month... you really need to think it over? lol

Well, it all depends on the deductible too. I mean if they charge a $150 deductible and you pay $5 for a year. $150+60=$210 and at that point you could still find a Captivate for that price if I'm not mistaking.
I do not have AT&T insurance as I don't live in the US, but I have extended warranty on my phone through Future Shop. I used my extended warranty to get this phone, actually. My LG Eve's microSD slot stopped working so I paid the difference and got a Captivate. There's no deductible on my plan, as it's a warranty not insurance.
Where can you find a Captivate for $210?

Insurance is $5/mo. You have to pay a deductible and they have two tiers. Tier one has a $50 deductible and Tier two has a $150 deductible. Samsung Captivate is Tier Two...HTC Aria, for example, is Tier one.

I always pay for it for just the first year I own a new phone and then cancel it. that way I'm eligible for at least an early upgrade.
Isn't att supposed to cover our phones for a year? That's what I heard... I went in once cause of a.bad flash and the fne.gentleman that helped me told me that the phone has a 1 olyear warrenty plan on it already.

I've been with AT&T since before it was AT&T (down here in Miami it was Bell South Mobile, then Cingular, now AT&T) and I've always had insurance. I've used it more than few times. Few more bucks a month in exchange for not having to buy a new handset at full price if something happens? I'm in!

You'd pay $150.
Tip: If you do actually end up breaking your phone, I've found it's better to say you lost it. Otherwise they occasionally try to get you to send the handset to them so they can attempt to fix it...leaving you without a phone for a period of time.

As noomoto said, you'd pay $125 and shipping I believe. What consitutes as tier 1 is determined by AT&T. Basically, any "high-end" new phone such as the captivate constitutes as tier 2. Things like the "free" phones you get when you sign up for a new/renew subscription are considered tier 1. I may have my tier's mixed up but yeah, thats the general rule. There's a list you can find on AT&T website that explains which phones have a $125 deductible and $50 deductible. See link.

That is correct, most devices come with a 1 (or 2) year warranty and it is through the manufacturer. However, the manufacturer warranty does not cover things like "I lost my phone" or "Someone stole my phone" or things that break the terms of the warranty agreement (i.e. dropping it in water, accidental drops and breaking the screen). Manufacturers warranty technically cover things that are manufacturing defects (i.e. speakers suddenly not working, buttons suddenly stop working, touch screen suddenly stops responding).
AT&T covers everything. If you are accident prone and tend to drop your phone, lose your phone, etc, than it is better to pay the extra AT&T insurance. As a previous poster said, typically AT&T will make you take it to a repair center if there is any kind of malfunction in the product (i.e. if you bricked your phone or speakers not working). But if you flat out say "I lost my phone", then you pay the deductible and you typically get a refurbished phone, if you get lucky, sometimes you get a new phone.
EDIT: Im sorry, Tier 1 deductible is $50. Tier 2 deductible is $125...not $150
When I had to get a replacement (I have the AT&T insurance plan), they sent me the replacement phone first and had me ship the broken phone back in the same box with the battery. I thought I'd get two batteries from the incident at least, but I'm not at all lucky. I'm pretty sure they ended up charging me 150, but I'm not sure. You might want to by the Captivate at another outlet (best buy, radioshack) and get one of their warranties, might be cheaper in the long run.

I always keep a screen protector and case on all my phones
So that I can sell them when I upgrade and because a permanent scratch on a screen would drive me so nuts I'd have to buy a new phone, right now I can just replace the screen protector
That said I'm a programmer, I know my brother in law is in construction and he'd never go without phone insurance, it depends on how you and your life treats your phone.

Beware AT&T Insurance on Nexus 5

So like most in this forum, I bought my Nexus 5 directly from the Google Play Store. I chose AT&T as my carrier. When I signed up for the account at the AT&T store, I got the phone insurance to cover me when I inevitably crack the screen or my 3 year old drops the phone into the bath tub. I asked them when I activated the phone if the AT&T insurance covered the phone for replacement even though I did not buy it from them. "Of course!" the salesperson said. Bought the phone at the end of October.
Sure enough, last night my buddy bumped the phone out of my hand, and it dropped about 4 feet to a stone floor face first. Cracked!!! It pained me to see my new phone with a full screen length crack, but I breathed a small sigh of relief knowing I had bought the insurance for just this circumstance. I called AT&T this morning to ask about the claim process and the customer service guy told me he was not sure it was covered because, "The Nexus 5 is not a phone we carry." He advised me to call Asurion Mobile, the AT&T insurance carrier and ask them. When I called Asurion, they confirmed what the AT&T guy said. AT&T does not carry the Nexus 5 and therefore cannot replace one as part of a claim. Instead they said that they would replace the phone with "an equivalent".
I know others probably like those other carriers, but AT&T in Baltimore really does offer way better coverage than those others, even Verizon. Because of this, I would like to stay with AT&T.
I did not talk with Asurion any further, but this presents those of us who bought the phone unlocked and out of contract precisely to avoid the carrier capture relationship with a conundrum on AT&T. The insurance will cover you having a phone on AT&T, just not the one that we all really want. Interestingly T-Mobile and Sprint DO carry the Nexus 5. Am curious if anyone on those carriers has made an insurance claim and they gave you another Nexus 5? And further, if they did, was it unlocked or locked?
Reading another forum, I noted that my credit card my offer purchase protection given that I am (barely) still inside of 90 days. Will be investigating that possibility next.

The $150 deductible for Asurion is ridiculous anyway. We just bought a pair of Nexus 5's from T-Mobile, but are holding off on insurance for now. I see Square Trade has insurance for $8 a month, with a $75 deductible -- my wife is a bit careless with the drops, so I was considering them for her phone.
Curious as to what they consider an equivalent. Possibly they replace the phone then you sell it to buy yourself another N5.

does any company do this? i dont get why the OP thought this would work. i get it that the customer service guy gave him the wrong information, but why did the OP expect this enough to even ask them in the first place?
@charmcitybryan - since ATT doesn't carry the Nexus 5, it makes sense that they can't replace your phone with the same one. You could do what @sprof suggested - and get the replacement they offer, and sell it and buy a N5 then.
Depending on when you bought your phone, and whether you used a credit card with accident protection, you may be covered by your credit card (check with your credit card if you used a credit card for the purchase)
If a carrier did somehow replace the N5, it will be unlocked (even if they somehow figured out a way to lock it - which they won't, unlocking it is as easy as flashing the stock image from Google).

Well...that $8 a month might not sound like a month, but consider this...
Let's say she has the phone for a year. Month 12, she breaks it. Boom, in theory you pay $75 and you get a new phone. You can't ignore the $96 you've also already paid. And then you have the situation of having the insurance, but for some reason they don't decide to honor the claim. (let's ignore that for the sake of argument though)
Even if you break it on month 1, you're paying $83.
Assuming you have the 32G version...does the ratio of that $83 vs. the replacement cost of the phone REALLY make mathematical sense to you factoring in the odds of her breaking the phone?
It almost never does. Just saying!
Also...here's the best part....Take the price of this phone, and compare it to the price of other comparable phones. It's seriously about half as much as them, if you are considering the TRUE cost, ie: no contract price.
Take that extra $350 or so and save it. If you get your phone stolen or you throw it at someone in a fit of drunken rage...you can buy a new phone.
If that doesn't happen...You still have that $350!
Went from a Note 3 returned it to buy Nexus 5, cancelled my insurance because I knew AT&T would not carry it. Call Google get an RMA they should be able to replace it since we have a 1yr warranty.

I'm shocked they even offered to replace it with an equal valued device. Not to sound hard to the op but I figured it would go without saying that a device not sold by Att wouldn't be covered through their insurance. Take the replacement and sell it for another n5.

I'm just curious what equal value phone the OP will get. Nothing is really equal when it comes to specs with that price. Moto x costs more but lower in specs. I just hope that OP will get something that's equal in specs not in costs.

i always have had insurance on all my phones.. im with sprint.. i ended up sellimg my gs4.. and got the N5 from the play store.. when i tried to get insurance on my N5 they said i cant bec ause i got my N5 from the play store.. sprint dont carry the 32 gig.. so now i have no insurence which sux.. but it is what it is

This is exactly why I love these forums! Great idea on getting the replacement and then selling to get another N5. Will definitely now start a claim to see what equivalent phone they will provide. Like another post said, I hope they provide equivalent specs, not equivalent cost given what a great value our phone is.
On the posts questioning why I thought AT&T would replace the phone in the first place, it's a fair question. I honestly have never used phone insurance before. My first mistake was believing the salesperson. Bummer, but that's life. I knew at the time that AT&T did not carry the phone, but was guessing the business model of the insurance would be as fine with providing cash so I could just get a replacement as they would providing a replacement phone. Always read the fine print and all that I guess. Another good option is just sending the phone in to LG for a screen replacement. I have read in other threads that may actually cost less than the deductible to replace the whole thing.
On the economics of cell phone insurance vs. self insuring given the cost, I found this article on Lifehacker that does a nice summary of the plans that are out there. Do a quick google search for it.
I think the argument that the high cost does not justify the benefit is particularly interesting now that many of us have the phone out of 2 year contracts and paid a low price for a great product. Aren't we all likely to jump at the next Nexus that comes out in a year? If so, as time approaches the next release, the value of replacing the phone we have goes down significantly.
In fact, given this, it would seem only to make sense to get phone insurance (if one wanted it) that provides a cash payout of the purchase price of the phone. Because the price of our phone is less, the premium would be lower and possibly a better cost benefit equation.
Equivalent phone to me would be a 5", snapdragon 800, 1080p display, lte and unlocked.

What's the best mobile insurance for the Note 8?

I purchased the Note 8 for TMO from Samsung direct. I've never purchased insurance before because the deductibles were so high, but I've never owned a phone this expensive before either. I can get TMO, Samsung or Geek Squad coverage and I am wondering about the pro's and cons of the offerings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just did squaretrade. I like it that it's a one time pay vs a monthly, I can use it for future phones, deductible is $99 and I can use it 3 times per plan. I rarely keep a phone for more then a year so works for me.
I used worth ave group. It was around $80 a year. Deductible is $50.
I used it twice to fix my wife's broken iPhone screen. Did not have any issues.

Question, the most I can choose is $899. The phone is more expensive than that.
Square trade for my note 8 tmobile 104 for 2 years and 99 deductible have been using them for about 7 years and never had a problem with them

I choose that amount. I figured if the phone was a total lose I would eat the other $50. I mainly have it incase I crack the screen.

I just looked at the Squaretrade and it does not cover loss/theft. Also, it's unclear what happens if you crack the screen or the back and they don't have replacement parts. I seriously doubt they have replacement screens for N8 at this point. Will they cover buying a new device?

For the first time ever I accepted the sales outlets insurance. 12.00€ per month. All risks so I am told BUT I have every confidence should I need to make a claim there will be the normal insurance situations?
As you wrote this is an expensive mobile device that is large and could be dropped. I think insurance is worth it in this case.
I suggest you enquire at the outlet you made your purchase. Failing that what about approaching the same company who insures your home or car or whatever? The only other thing I would mention is there is no such thing as cheap, good, insurance. Use a reputable company. Let us know what you find. :highfive:

It does not cover theft. Honestly the phone never leaves my side and if I get it stolen from me its fairly useless to anybody.
Squaretrade is the best bang for your buck.
Look for 20 to 30 percent off coupons.

Thanks for the input. I ended up choosing Squaretrade. It cost $159 for three years of coverage which covers the N8 and a new phone when I buy it. They are having a special right now. The deductible is $99. I've never lost a phone, so I decided damage protection is all I really need.

Depends on your usage and how often you switch phones.
I'm on this two jump thingy. All i need is a year of phone coverage. With the wort have group, that 1 year is like 80 bux i think? I dont plan to use it because i am not clumsy like some people.
But if you plan to keep this device longer than a year, then square trade is the first option I'd pick.
I am going to go with samsung, having an unlocked phone both AT&T and Verizon said they would not offer me insurance.

If you bank with Wells Fargo you can get $600 of phone insurance with a $25 deductible by just paying your phone bill with their Visa card. That's enough to cover a broken screen. I've used it once and it worked out well.

Wish I had found ones that actually worked.
I purchased squaretrade. they have been around about as long as ebay has. I found this post and it had some great information about phone insurance.
I also went with Squaretrade. I have never lost a phone or had one stolen (knock on wood and all of that), so I'm not too worried about that. They were nice enough to refund me the entire price of the Squaretrade plan I had on my S7E, since I'd never used it in the 10.5 months I've had it on their plan. So the cost of a 2 year policy for the Note 8 is only like $50 net.

I used them once last year for my s7 edge. they weren't horrible but I was a little upset that I had a black s7 edge and they sent me a silver one. I know they cant guarantee a color but the fact the phone was only released 2 months prior and not have that color was kind of crap IMO. i was either thinking of going with square trade or Samsung premium care. my only issue is that i may want insurance that covers lost devices as well which neither of these companies have. Any input and experiences you guys have had would be great to read.

SquareTrade here, $129 for 2 years and $99 deductible if something happens (other than loss or stolen obviously). Have never lost or had a phone stolen in all my smartphone years so that's a non-issue for me. I'll gladly pay $129 for piece of mind and $228 in total for a $1000 phone if something happens.
I have tmobile insurance it has helped me out a lot .get it it covers loss theft and damage...
Last year my kids new iphone got stolen and no hassle to get a new phone after 185 deductible

Same here. Hopefully we'll never have to use it.
I have cover through my Bank Account in UK (Nationwide) - fee for the account is £13 /month, for worldwide travel insurance, worldwide Mobile Phone insurance and a few other benefits including great interest rate on balances. It covers all my household (Me and My Hubby, but if you had children it would cover) and covers devices up to £1000 in value, with £50 excess for either loss, theft, damage or breakdown, max of 2 claims per account per year. Worth enquiring anyway....

did youhave any experience with Worth ave group? seems like a pretty decent deal. 81.00 for the year and a 50 deductible. cover loss and theft too!

Insurance options?

I'm getting (eventually, thanks Sammy) the 512gb Ocean Blue and the delayed order has given me time to compare insurance options. My current carrier is T-Mobile and their insurance is $12/month with a $250 deductible. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $538 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct. That is quite expensive so I've started to look elsewhere.
Esurance is $149 for 2 years of coverage and anywhere from $25 deduct for an easy fix up to $199 for complete loss and they cover lost or stolen. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $348 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct. I'm just not sure if they will charge more if you have the 512gb model which is more expensive.
SquareTrade is $129 for 2 years of coverage and anywhere from $25 deduct for a cracked screen up to $99 deduct for a complete loss. Only catch is they don't cover loss or stolen. If you keep the device for 2 years that comes out to $228 if you file a claim once with the highest deduct.
Any thoughts? Anyone else have any insurance suggestions? With a $1,300 device I'm definitely in the market.
I went with Samsung Premium Care. 3 claims a year, 12 bucks a month and 99 dollar deductible. I'm not paying T-Mobile 12 bucks a month for that ridiculous deductible they have. I like the fact that I can keep it on the phone for however long I want and cancel at any time, so if I sell the phone for the S10 or whatever, I don't have to worry about transferring a warranty.

I'm not sure. If you go to the Premium Care site and put in your mobile phone number it will tell you if you are eligible. I carried it on my Note 8 that I bought from Swappa brand new. I bought the 9 from Samsung this time and added it at checkout.
I am paying my monthly bill using a WF Amex card. When you pay the bill through it, you get coverage for up to $600 per a claim and 2 claims in a 12 month period with a $25 deductible.

It looks like they don't cover Lost or Stolen. That's not a deal breaker for me, but I know it is for some people.

Hmmm never heard about this. So you get free protection even for Stolen just not lost. And the only deduct you'd pay is $25. I would just be worried because this device is $1300 and they only cover up to $600? So if your device is stolen they'll replace it with a lesser priced model?

I'm guessing you meant to reply to mine post. I think the difference between stolen and lost is you probably have to file a police report. That to them, probably makes a difference.
As for the reimbursement, here's what it says per their T&C
"Depending on the nature and circumstances of the damage or theft, the benefit administrator, at its sole discretion, may choose to repair or replace the Cellular Wireless Telephone or reimburse the Cardholder for the lesser of a) $600.00 excess of the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) deductible; or b) the current suggested retail price of a replacement Cellular Wireless Telephone of like kind and quality, excluding taxes, delivery and transportation charges and any fees associated with the Cellular
Wireless Telephone service provider less the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) deductible."
So it sounds like they will try to repair or replace the phone, or pay out up to $600. Given that our phone is $1000+, I'm assuming that they will pay out $600 - $25 deductible. Just remember that you aren't paying for any additional warranty plans, so you need to factor that in as well.

I usually use squaretrade for my phones. You can have coverage past 2 years of you renew it yearly. I've never had to file a claim on a phone so I cant speak for the experience of the claim process. Another good thing is of you pay yearly for squaretrade you can switch to to another phone when you upgrade.

I'm thinking about Worth Ave for accidental and theft is about 200 dollars for 2 years. This is insurance though and doesn't cover non accidental malfunction me thinks.

I'm leaning towards SquareTrade personally, its overall the cheapest and a $99 deductible is an easy pill to swallow compared to T-Mobile's $250 deduct. I even did an online chat with SquareTrade and made sure if something happens to my 512gb that I will get a 512gb in return, and not a 128gb and they confirmed yes.
