Bootloader catch 22 - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Questions & Answers

Hi all with request for help,
I am trying to unlock bootloader for 4x. I have created and activated MI-Account, downloaded and installed Unlock tool and set device in fastboot. Device is positively recognized by windows with the command "fastboot devices".
But when I start the unlock tool it checks for permissions and I get the message: "your device is not supported by mi unlock" and then it sends me back to the unlock tool download page instead of to the application page where I can put in my details. Cache of chrome browser emptied various times - no success. It´s catch 22.
I have version MIUI 8 global. I have also heard that I need to flash the Chinese/english version to unlock.
If anyone has an idea for the correct way to go from here a competent feedbck would be greatly appreciated

You have to request permission from Xiaomi to unlock your bootloader.

please help. how did you exactly unlocked bootloader???????

PLEASE HELP. whenever i try to unlock bootloader it always gets stuck at 99% showing 'current account is not bound this device'. i am unlocking using account which got unlock permission 3 months ago.
I am on global stable rom. I tried changing to dev rom through updater app but it shows 'cant verify update' or 'you are allowed to flash only latest developer rom'.
Please tell me exactly how do i unlock my bootloader.
Create a new account. Then apply for unlock. And add this new account to your device. You will be able to unlock after a days. Meanwhile keep trying to unlock. It takes 3-4 days before you can unlock.

Please bind your account to the device in Mi unkock status at developer option
Just wait patiently, no need to create new account, I assume you have got your permission for unlocking? Then add that same account which you got permission from to your device and use your device normally, after 10- 15 days try unlocking again with latest mi unlock tool, it will unlock in one click, I have unlocked many devices with same account

Bootloader locked automatically

My redmi 4x (santoni) have twrp installed and I it is running on miui pro rom. But it's bootloader locking automatically after enabling usb debugging and switching off the phone. I can't boot into recovery and system, can only boot into fastboot mode, and I have to use mi flash tool to unlock bootloader again.
If someone face this problem, is there any solution of this. Please reply.
Thank you.
Bootloader can only be locked on all available official MIUI ROM, it can not be locked on modified MIUI versions.
There is no way that it'll get locked by itself by turning on USB Debugging and switching off phone. to lock unlocked bootloader one has to clean flash from Mi flash tools and needs to select lock bootloader before flashing.
I don't know how are you able to unlock bootloader on Mi flash tools because to unlock it official way one will need Mi unlock tool with permission from xiaomi(depending on region)
First make sure you are not on fake MIUI if so then flash official one through mi flash tools and then unlock it by mi unlock tools.
Once it is unlocked as i said earlier there is no way that it will get locked itself unless you choose to lock via mi flash tools.
about unlocking again
sorry for mistake, I have to use mi unlock tool again with my mi account signed in to unlock the bootloader again. And can't unlock by fastboot command "fastboot oem unlock".

I still do not get it what exact issue you have and what version of MIUI you are on.
You are saying you are on MIUI Pro and that confirms bootloader is unlocked and now you are saying

I have a similar issue and came across this thread, usb debugging suddenly stopped working, it was working perfectly till yesterday. So when I went to developer options, I saw that the OEM unlocking option is clickable now ( it had remained grayed out ever since I unlocked the bootloader ). The Mi Unlock status option tells me that phone is locked. Toggling usb debugging is not making it work. When I restart the phone, I definitely see the unlocked padlock icon on the boot screen. So I am not sure what is going on. also, magisk is working fine.
In the screenshot you can see that it shows the device is locked. But from the status bar you can make out that exposed is working. I'll have to get another device though to get a picture of the padlock icon though.

Toggle OEM unlock enabled doesn´t mean that the device is unlocked, it only means that the bootloader can be unlocked, there is other item just lines after to check it; Mi Unlock status, enter to it and confirm it.
Also, you can confirm the bootloader status through fastboot with fastboot oem device-info

Yea as I mentioned, the mi unlock status tells me that phone is locked.
Just check via fastboot, and it shows that phone is unlocked.
So do I just believe fastboot, or wait a month and then try to again unlock the bootloader via the mi unlock tool?

You said "In the screenshot you can see that it shows the device is locked" but unfortunately the screenshot didn´t reveal that, I wonder, what exactly it says in the Mi Unlock status apart.
In older days, users share an aboot image, this served to unlock bootloader automatically without make the official process to unlock it, it could be that you flashed the official stock images, and it got re-locked. Anyway, we don´t know what happened with the fastboot command or with the Mi Unlock status section, so no respond to those points.
For the part you say to wait a certain time, definitely, no, the bootloader process is not monitored any more, for older devices, they can be unlocked instantly.

My phone is about a month old, so it does tell me to wait. Contradictory screenshots attached below. After the boot unlock, I did flash flash a magisk edited boot.img and vbmeta.img to disable it. If I remember correctly though it was fine after that.

Mi9 brick after bootloader locking

Hello. I used this method to lock bootloader in chinese version of Mi9:
in.c.mi.com/thread-1392662-1-0.html
Something went wrong and after that only recovery menu and fastboot is available. At the bottom of the screen appears a message "This version of MIUI can't be installed on this device.". Bootloader is locked now but MIUI is not starting.
I tried to unlock bootloader with Mi Unlock. Unlocking status: "Please add your account in MIUI's Settings > Developer options > Mi Unlock status." Unfortunetly I can't go to MIUI's settings because MIUI is not starting.
I was trying to force ROM installation (global, chinese, eea, stable, developer) using XiaoMiTool and FastFlash - not working.
Also I was trying to sideload MIUI using XiaomiADB - not working.
Bootloader is locked so fastboot mode is useless in this situation I guess.

Just to get the background: Why did you lock the bootloader? I can't see any reason to do this after unlocking.

Because the banking applications didn't work with unlocked bootloader. I thought this is the easiest method. Now I know it's not. To be honest I was lazy and I didn't want to use twrp and magisk...

You have locked bootloader on Chines device with global/EEA... etc. (not Chines official ROM), you can't do that. As i saw in other threads there is a simple solution with authorized account and EDL flash. If it won't work the only solution is opening your device and connect some contacts with a pin and then EDL flash, there is a lot of videos about that on youtube.

Thank you g_seva. I will try that.
Oh, try mi flash tool beta first. It doesn't require you to login and use the Chinese Rom Global.
GO to recovery and use 'Mi Assistant', plug to PC, use the Mi Flash Tool (beta) if the most recent one is not working. On set it will tell you that you can't install the rom, there will be an error like you can't modify or change but you should be able to do it since you are installing an original Chinese Rom.
Give it a try first.

Pixel 5 Android 12 Developer Preview 3 OTA Sideload failed at 94% and now it says "Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start."

I tried to install Android 12 Developer Preview 3 on my Pixel 5 via OTA Sideload but it failed at 94% with the message 'adb: failed to read command: No error' on cmd and 'Install from ADB completed with status 0' on phone.
After this when I try to boot, I get the following message: 'Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start.' (attached image)
I'm able to access the bootloader but when I tried going into recovery mode through the bootloader, it shows the same message: 'Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start.'
Seems like the recovery is corrupted as well.
Unfortunately I had not enabled OEM unlocking in the developer options before trying to install the Developer Preview, which is now not letting me unlock the bootloader.
Please help me fix the issue or help me find a way to unlock the bootloader without enabling OEM unlock.
Thanks in advance.
I had the same thing happen to me just now. Have you managed to figure anything out?
Nothing from my side, since bootloader is locked I can't flash the system image and I can't unlock bootloader because my OEM unlock is turned off in developer settings and the Recovery and Rescue mode are also corrupted.
I contacted Google support and their only solution was to bring it in for service as my device is still under warranty.
I'm in the same boat here with a Pixel 4a 5G. Got to 94%.
First time I've experienced an issue while sideloading. . .
Contacted google support and they are shipping me a refurbed replacement... disappointed, to say the least.
Not sure what to make of this, it's developer preview and now beta. Issues will possibly occur and it warns you of such.
**Possible Fix**
I would believe this might be due to the boot_a & boot_b when trying other custom ROMs or OTA updates.
I used the fastboot/ADB files from the lineageOS ROM page and used the command: fastboot flashing unlock
to unlock the bootloader again, this then allowed me to go back into the rescue mode and use googles online image reinstall and got me back onto the stock ROM. Hope this helps some people

As an additional this let me get my phone back to loading the custom ROM I was on, to then reenable debugging mode, I then rebooted back into fastboot mode and used Googles online factory restore mode to flash stock ROM back on and I was back up and running

As I had mentioned earlier: I had NOT enabled OEM unlocking in the developer options before trying to install the Developer Preview.
So this method does not work for me. It will be helpful if I can find a way to force unlock the bootloader somehow.
Thank you for your reply. Hope your method helps someone else resolve their issue.

This might not work but have you tried plugging the phone into the computer using the pixel online factory recovery and tried the first step of the process which is a prompt to unlock the boatloader?

I'm going to state what should be obvious here - you should not attempt to use pre-release firmware with a locked bootloader, because you will ne severely limited on what you can do to recover if something goes wrong.
Unlocking the bootloader is not possible if OEM Unlocking is not enabled.

What exactly are you referring to? The Android Flash Tool requires an unlocked bootloader to start with, and does not unlock the bootloader itself.

Are you not aware of the Google online tool for their Pixel phones? https://pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection
This has additional flashing options within the 'online' version of fastboot/adb, and found that when trying locally downloaded adb/fastboot it didnt work. But when using the online version it allowed me to unlock the phones boatloader.

I am aware. However, this tool does not function like adb and is not meant for flashing factory images like the Android Flash Tool is. The Pixel Repair Tool works specifically from Rescue Mode.

Can't get pass unlock bootloader

I've been trying to unlock my Redmi note 9 bootloader, but I can't. For now my ROM is MIUI Global 12.5.4 stable. For some reason my fastboot kinda different than any tutorials and stuck with the mi unlock cannot find my device. I don't know what step I'm missing, help me please.
- Already make an mi account and registered phone number, already passed it on setting unlock status
- Already enabled OEM unlocking and USB debugging
- My PC is able to access file folder on my internal storage, and I was already tried in laptop and PC, still can't.
