Mate 10 review - Huawei Mate 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

This is a cut and paste from what I wrote on a Singapore forum. Pricing for Singapore and firmware for Asian unit only.
Just got mine for the last week – SGD $795 from Moby Shop in Far East Plaza.
Here is my early impression of the phone.
Screen:
- Really deep blacks for an IPS LCD, I can't tell the diff with my S8+ AMOLED in the presence of anything more than low light in the room. It has to be really dark for you to tell the diff between the Mate 10 LCD screen black and the S8+ AMOLED black. However you can definitely can tell the difference in a dark room though. Very impressive contrast ratio for an LCD.
- Very cool screen temp, on default it is already quite a cool hue. If you set it to the cool temp setting will make the whites too blue.
- Max brightness is slightly retina scorching – definitely easily visible outdoors in sunlight.
- The colours however are still not as vibrant as my 18 month P9 Plus with a 1080p AMOLED panel. Let's not kid ourselves, all the premium phones are going OLED for a reason, it is probably the superior technology from colour and battery efficiency perspective. I have become accustomed to the Samsung style over saturated colours over the years and colour wise it is not a match for AMOLED panels even on the Mate 10 vivid setting.
- QHD sharp beautiful screen other than losing saturated colours to AMOLED, amazing to watch Youtube HDR videos
- I can tell the sharpness difference between the Mate 10 5.9" QHD and my P9 Plus. 5" 1080p but it's not huge and you have to be picky to see it
- There might be some jealousy when you put it next to an AMOLED screen to be honest but only if you compare it directly otherwise you won't miss it
- Pentile screen RGB-RGW configuration but you can't tell even looking closely. There is no stippling like older gen Pentile screens.
Speakers / Audio:
- Speakers are amazing, louder than S8+ and P9 Plus easily, crazy loud, can easily fill a whole room if it's quiet
- 3.5mm audio not perceptibly louder or better than other phones specifically but I have not tested with HiFi speakers / lossless audio
Performance:
- Fast, no lag on daily use
- I have not tested gaming*
- To be fair all flagships I think depend more on software not being bloated than the raw power of the processor. I think all current gen flagships are adequately powered from hardware perspective. Depends on whether or not the phone has been bogged down with bloatware and it doesn't seem so with the Mate 10
- This NPU business really has no impact currently on day to day use apart from the camera recognising objects. Over-hyped at present.
Camera:
- Not adequately tested but it is definitely much brighter than the P9 Plus. You can even appreciate how big the 1:1.6 lenses are just looking at the back of the phone!
- Low light is admirable, probably not the best but pretty comparable to the S8+

Mate 10 – Night shot setting with vivid colours. About 23 sec exposure. ISO stated to be "100" but it's definitely lower – when you manually try ISO 100 it is over exposed at lower exposure times. Amazing colours, even if they are not real.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9nPobmTax52UmFUcU5VZGFoc2c
S8+ – Manual settings ISO 50 (lowest), 8 sec exposure (maximum on S8+ pro mode is 10 sec only), white balance 5000K with vivid colours.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9nPobmTax52aDlySnlVTzZlRlk
P9 Plus – Night shot settings with vivid colours. Also 23 sec exposure. Again ISO stated to be "100" but it's definitely lower just as on the Mate 10.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9nPobmTax52UEFfazJkd1Yzclk
Mate 10 – minimal lighting. Picture is brighter than in real life.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9nPobmTax52OGZFajNkZjhOS2s
S8+ – as above pic is brighter than in real life.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9nPobmTax52MG5kcjRFOW5Fb0U
P9 Plus – Fail! Really can't make it with the 1:2.2 lenses.
Battery:
- Definitely can at least make it to 5+ hours SOT, sometimes 6+ depending on usage.
- This is already updated to the firmware update ALP-L29 8.0.0.115 (C636). I believe the original was 8.0.0.103. Apparently there was some bug with Google Play services chewing up battery. Instructions for update at the bottom.
Build:
- I always thought I would prefer thicker + bigger battery but to be honest this is the first time I have held a phone and realized why manufacturers are ditching 3.5mm jacks to save space – it is miniscule mm differences on paper but it does have a perceptible different in hand feel
- The in hand feel of the P9 Plus being just a tad thinner or the slightly lesser width of the S8+ and the Mate 10 Pro (dummy phone) do feel better.
- Otherwise the glass sandwich build is solid + free TPU case in box + already applied plastic screen protector (lousy quality fingerprint oil magnet unfortunately but better than nothing). Looking forward to buying the Ringke Fusion case + Nillkin glass screen protector for it once it is out.
- I have not tested the water resistance so can't comment
Software:
- EMUI 8.0 minimal difference as far as I can tell from EMUI 5.0 on my P9 Plus. I actually quite like it.
- Some incompatibilities – can't install Solid Explorer (had to sideload – not sure if this is Oreo or EMUI related and SE has not been update since June 2017). SE also can't detect my SD card but ES file explorer can.
- Sideloading apps / install unknown apps is now separately allowed from app to app (i.e. from solid explorer or chrome etc – peculiar setup)
- You can get rid of nav bar to maximize screen space and use the single button at bottom to do back/home/recent apps with gestures like the P10 but I find it less intuitive than using the standard bar. You can however hide the nav bar and call it up anytime by swiping up, so it's a good compromise.
- Fingerprint scanner like all Chinese phones (Huawei and Xiaomi are what I have tested) are way faster and more reliable than the S8+ (slightly slower and higher chance to misread and not unlock – this has been tested on multiple S8+ and a Note 8 as well)
HOW TO UPDATE TO LATEST FIRMWARE 8.0.0.115 (C636) ASIAN MODEL ONLY*
- For some reason the firmware is not coming up on System Update yet despite it being available on Firmware Finder and being allowed for install when verified with IMEI
- Firmware finder on Google Play Store
- Usually on P9 Plus I would update using Firmware Finder proxy downloaded directly from Firmware finder as an apk but the FF Proxy apk will NOT install on Mate 10 for whatever reason
- Install using DNS method from Firmware finder
- Use DNS Changer from Google Play Store to change the DNS and follow instructions from Firmware finder
- You will end up downloading the Firmware twice in a row for some buggy reason – 2+GB becomes 5+GB. This used to happen on my P9 Plus as well
- Everyone online suggests you download the full firmware instead of the OTA update for any Huawei phone update
Other thoughts:
- Read online on Youtube comments that the Mate 10 Pro OLED screen was sourced from China screen manufacturer BOE who could not produce QHD OLED screens till recently which explains Huawei's weird "decision" to put a 1080p OLED on Mate 10 Pro – this sounds most likely a supply constraint decision rather than a real conscious decision from them. Everyone in the market is trying to wean themselves off the Samsung supply chain for panels – look at the millions Google and Apple have invested in LG for them to supply OLED panels to them.
- Choice of 10 vs 10 Pro probably boils down to SD card / 3.5mm jack for 10 vs waterproofing / better in hand build feel / OLED panel colours for 10 Pro. Can't comment if the 1080p Mate 10 Pro vs 1440p Mate 10 makes much of a diff, but I suspect not.
Sorry for long winded post. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thank you for a really thorough impressions review!
I'm very close to put in an order on this phone as well, mainly because I like the iadea of a QHD LCD for VR movie viewing. I have an OP3 but the resolution on that OLED panel is noticeably lower than my old OPO 1080 LCD. Have you had a chance to test if H265 playback in 60 Hz 4K is hardware supported on the Mate 10?
Also, how is the vibration motor if you have the phone in your pocket? On the OPO3 I don't notice a phone call if I have muted the sound.
I saw a review where they said the mobile signal was weak and inconsistent, but it seems like there has been a firmware update to address this issue? Do you feel the reception is better or worse than other phones?
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks for s great personal review! I'm flying tomorrow to Singapore for a few days. Still on the fence, if to buy now or wait for others (V30, U11+,...)
Also, how is your SOT (screen on time) now after a couple of days? Better, worse?
Which color did you get?

H265 2160p is supported by default video player. Did not test 4K video.
Vibration motor is average. Nothing special.
Reception is fine, haven't had any issues with it at all.

SOT between 5-6.5 hours depending on how much is on wifi or in 4g. No issues making through the day with heavy use.
I got the Mocha brown colour. Waiting for my clear case to come in. The only good branded case so far is the Ringke Fusion that was just released a few days ago.

Heya, thanks for your write up.. I picked up an ALP-L29 yesterday and am mostly enjoying it.: highfive:
Just curious if you have you been able to install the .119 update now available on firmware finder ?
On Telstra in Australia.. It looks like my IMEI is not approved.

I'm not experienced with Huawei devices at all, I'm eyeballing the Mate 10... but have you guys tried the software that they supply called Hisuite or am i missing something? Looks like it updates firmware also.

Ah didn't even know there was a new firmware update. Huawei will slowly approve batches of IMEI phones for the update to avoid overloading their servers.
If you don't want to wait then use Firmware Finder. Sometimes the official update is slow - seen on FF far earlier than official update but sometimes it's also lightning quick and the official update hits your phone before you know it. A bit unpredictable. But overall of course FF is faster.

P9 Plus and Galaxy S7 Edge

Does anyone have both phones and would be willing to share their experience with them?
I am trying to decide which one to buy and would really appreciate the view of someone who has/had both devices.
As I already read a lot and made up my mind about their power/speed/camera/screen I'd instead like to know more about more normal usage/features.
For example:
- battery life
- outdoor screen readability/visibility in very sunny condition
- fingerprint sensor (also about pros/cons in being positioned on the back/front of the phone)
- particular software/hardware features that may be useful but missing on one of the two devices
- issues/problems/avaliaibility with root, custorm roms, warranty, etc
Thanks in advance

s7 edge is now same price on ebay
I'm currently using both of these phones (as well as an iphone 6s plus), and there are definitely pros and cons for both. Now overall I'm primarily using the P9 plus, and the reason is that I travel quite a bit so the dual sim function is extremely useful. The problem with the S7 edge is that even the dual sim models only have 32GB, so it's not enough memory. If the S7edge had a 64G dual sim version, it would probably edge out the P9 plus, but only ever so slightly. Let me list some of the pros and cons:
- battery life: The S7 edge has slightly better battery life (my version is the exynos version), but the P9 is very good too, it's just that the S7 edge is excellent. So for me it depends on your usage pattern. With both sims activated, the P9 plus lasts me just through a full day, so having the S7 edge's battery life would be better for me in terms of peace of mind.
- memory: as mentioned the P9 plus comes with 64G so it's the much better choice here if you are not adding a memory card.
- screen: I actually prefer the P9 Plus because it's flat. The S7 edge's edge does get annoying at times and the viewable area feels more comfortable on the P9 plus. Quality is very similar.
-fingerprint sensor: P9 plus. You don't need to press on it and the activation is quicker than the S7. The S7 isn't bad, but it's a step behind the P9 plus and the iphone 6s plus as well. I'm fine with the placement of the button, both locations work well and it's easy to get used to.
- software: P9 plus. The latest touchwiz is ok, but I always slap on Nova, and so overall I actually find the Huawei software to be leaner and quicker. It's one of the fastest Android phones I've used in day-to-day situations. Not sure what type of memory the phone uses, but my P9 plus flies. The Kirin processor is inferior to the exynos but in normal usage I actually feel that the operation feels smoother on the P9 plus. Now I don't play games so I'm sure there's a difference there, but in terms of using apps like instagram, flightradar, google apps, browser, etc. it's at least a tie. I think Huawei's built in battery power manager is also more robust than the Samsung one. When you restrict background processes Huawei really shuts it down. I don't use Samsung's split screen much so for me the lack of it is no big deal. One annoyance of the Huawei though is that I can't figure out how to make notifications display properly in the notification bar. What I mean is for my weather app, it normally can display the weather on the notification strip at the top. On my Huawei, it shows an icon that depicts the app running but not the actual weather information. I can't seem to find a way around this.
- camera: tie. The S7 edge is slightly faster, better in low light, and has sharper details. I however prefer the P9 plus' color rendering and overall picture before zooming in. It's probably because of the lack of ois or something, but when zooming in for example to words on small objects the S7 does a much better job of rendering this. But at the end of the day who's reading the text on small objects? So this one is a tough call. I love the P9 plus' camera effects and overall picture quality, but you've got to be more steady handed in low light. I also love the S7 edge's ability to quickly take a picture and knowing that more likely than not the picture will be quite good. Just to add I basically don't shoot in raw format.
- I haven't rooted my P9 plus, but I have rooted my S7 edge. I don't it's much of an issue as both can be rooted. Haven't had any major issues with either software and they seem to be updated at the same pace.
- build: tie. The P9 plus feels super premium in my opinion, and the S7 edge is a looker. It comes down to whether you like the metal look / feel or the glass look / feel. Having said that you pretty much must have a case for the S7 edge or it's too difficult to hold without accidentally hitting the screen's edge.
- music through headphones: this is actually pretty important for me, and both of these are above average performers. More treble and less bass than the iphone 6s plus in my opinion, but very clean output. So no problems for either on here. I keep Huawei's own music enhance off though - I find that adds way too much bass and distorts the actual quality of the music.
These two phones are definitely the two best Android phones I've ever used, and I've used a lot (I actually also have a G5 but it's purely a music player now...it really cannot compare to either one of these other than the camera). Other than the memory / dual sim issue, I think it purely comes down to:
1. do you play games? the Samsung chip may be better for this
2. How heavy a user are you? the Samsung battery may give you the extra juice needed
3. Screen / typing: the edge screen can definitely be a pain when it comes to typing, which could be the tie breaker that goes in favor of the P9 plus
I guess overall, the Samsung slightly edges the Huawei. If the price similar and you don't need dual sim and the curved screen doesn't bother you, I'd go with the S7 edge. But again the P9 plus is a great phone in its own right.

Thanks a lot for the many details in your reply!
Can I ask if you have any experience/preference about screen readability outdoor in a very sunny day condition? is any phone better?
Honestly I hate the curved screen idea as I type a lot and use to read comics on the phone. It's just that in my area I can find both phones for the same price so I was considering the S7 edge anyway. Also I tend to be a heavy user at times, so the extra battery life may be nice.
Thanks again.

I have to say that I find both equally legible - they are pretty similar displays made by Samsung. In real life usage I'd rate both above average in outdoor sunlight, so no issues there. I'm using the P9 plus today, and it's really sunny outdoors where I am and I can read it quite well with auto brightness. I haven't used the S7 edge for a few weeks but I remember it being fine as well.
It's a really tough call - but if this is your day-to-day driver, and the price is the same, I'd probably say that the Samsung is a safer bet.

Yes, really difficult to decide
I also feel that for the same price the s7 would be slightly "safer". Just hating the curved screen... Will try to compare both phones again in some shop and decide.
Thanks again for your help!
I have used Samsungs all Galaxy S top models since the first Galaxy S came out. My last Samsung was Galaxy S6 Edge. Never ever again will i buy a Samsung, awfull battery time, ugly layout, service problems when it breakes. After that i bought my first Huawei, first P8, then Mate8 and now P9+ i have never been more satisfied whith a phone. This is for me the best phone.

YOu should buy Honor V8 AL20 2k version and you would be much more impressed than with P9 plus
if you play 3D heavy games like HIT, the Kirin 955 cant provide 60fps on a 1080p panel, the 2k panel will be worse of with 3d games but if you dont game then the honor v8 sounds good. Or consider the note 7 instead?

Moving to the xz3 from the p20 pro. Worth it?

Used to be a sony fan and thinking of making the switch.
Mainly due to the quicker update cycle. I'd be missing shooting raw and I don't know how battery life measures up.
What do you guys think, what would I be fsjnibgg and what would I be trading?
Thanks
The ROM is unexceptional. Quite a few Pie features missing and little customisability.
The camera is mediocre.
The battery life is excellent.
The screen is amazing.
The housing is extremely slippery. Wet block of soap slippery.
I'm starting to really like it now that I've rooted it with Magisk and installed a few tweaks (battery life seems even better with the LKT module).

I can only recommend the XZ3. Great phone.
And it's not true - the camera is outstanding. All the real life reviews confirm that.
Thank you
I am really thinking about it.
A contract with vodafone UK for 41/month which includes 32 GB of data, Spotify and a 9 pound up front cost sounds very good on this device.
The sim only alternative (with 25 gbs) is 25/month. Which means the device cost over two years would be around 380ish.
I may try getting it today - anything you guys disliked other than the fingerprint placement?
In general I really like the phone
Pros:
- amazing screen
- nice design
- fast and snappy
- almost stock Android
- improved camera and camera interface
- feels premium
- fast updates
-
Cons:
- only 4GB RAM which is insufficient
- occasional lags or freezes in launcher
- very limited new Android Pie additions
- no headphone jack
- grainy photos when shooting indoors
- pre-installed bloatware without option to uninstall (especially Facebook)
- side sense is a sick joke (disable immediately if you don;t want to smash the phone into the wall after 10 minutes of usage)
- annoying blue artefacts where screen curves
- lack of accidental touches sensing causing screen to randomly stop responding
- way overpriced considering competition
- no quick charger in the box (UK at least)
- super slippery so you'll have to slap a case ASAP

- pre-installed bloatware without option to uninstall (especially Facebook)
- side sense is a sick joke (disable immediately if you don;t want to smash the phone into the wall after 10 minutes of usage)
- annoying blue artefacts where screen curves
- lack of accidental touches sensing causing screen to randomly stop responding
- way overpriced considering competition
- no quick charger in the box (UK at least)
- super slippery so you'll have to slap a case ASAP

Super helpful list. Thank you my friend !!!
Wait for the XZ4.
Sony phones are amazing with great performance and personality

The ROM is unexceptional. Quite a few Pie features missing and little customisability.
The camera is mediocre.
The battery life is excellent.
The screen is amazing.
The housing is extremely slippery. Wet block of soap slippery.
I'm starting to really like it now that I've rooted it with Magisk and installed a few tweaks (battery life seems even better with the LKT module).

Depends on your definition of excellent. It's the exact same sensor module as found on the XZ1 which is over a year old. Not quite flagship for a company that is the worldwide market leader in camera sensor design and production. I'm also pretty sure the triple camera setup on the P20 pro outperforms the XZ3's outdated single 18MP camera. So given the context, mediocre is the right word.

Yes, camera is not that good like on XZ2 Premium or Huawei P20 Pro, but definitely much better then on XZ Premium and XZ1. Let's say at daylight Sony camera is better and on lowlight Huawei camera is better (my opinion because of colours on photos). RAM is higher on P20 Pro. And no gestures on Android 9 if it is important. Everything else is better. Sound, screen, speed, build quality (back glass on Huawei P20 Pro is a jake; it is stratched after 10 days of use without any case).

Compared with my wife P20 Pro - same results indoor with natural lightning. Did not tested yet on low light.

Xz2 beats p20 pro so how is that lol and its also prooven
You will miss 4000 mAh battery from P20 Pro. You will also miss the camera, P20 Pro has better post processing (not as noisy photos), much better in low light and RAW-support.
XZ3 has only 4 GB RAM, not sufficient in a 2018 flagship phone. Huawei used 6 GB in their 2016 flagship phones.
You can not use XZ3 without case. It’s like a soap in your hand and glass back scratches easily.
Otherwise it’s Sony’s best phone yet, not bad at all, but not on the same level as other flagship phones.
Personally the only two things that made me decide against the P20/Mate 20 were my dislike for EMUI and the fact that Huawei discontinued their boot loader unlocking service last summer. Sony's ROM is much closer to AOSP and if you want root you can easily unlock it.

The Mate 20 Pro Broke my Heart

Hey, apologies if this is too long of a post. Was hoping to share my recent experiences.
Background: Was on contract with a carrier using the XS Max. Needed to switch carriers, so sold iPhone to cover the contract balance. Switched carrier and got the Mate 20 Pro. After a week returned the Mate 20 and got a Note 9. And now I'm here I guess posting with the Note 9.
Mate 20 Pro: I ended up returning it because my top half of the screen had a red tint to it and the center part of the display had greenish colour to it. For the record, I've owned a Mate 8 in the past. To my surprise, when I started using the Mate 20 Pro I could immediately tell that (a) it's a beautiful and fast device, and (b) that EMUI haven't changed one bit... Whether it's android 7, 8, or 9 -- frustration levels remain high. I hope no one gets me wrong, I love Huawei. Kinda always did. I love the fact that they copy everything they can from Apple and other manufacturers. That's a good thing because it means its users can enjoy awesome features like 3D face unlock (which worked great for me! I think they implemented it really well) or no headphone jack (I'm joking), or even new features like in display finger print scanner or having the Google now integrated to the launcher, or what about the small zoomed in screen when you're moving the typing cursor? Nice touch! But the truth is, you're gonna be googling for hours trying to understand why you can't receive notifications or so many other things that are unique to EMUI. Even me being a user that is already very familiar with EMUI, I still couldn't figure out why I'm not receiving notifications until I wake up the screen in the morning, or why I can't set a live lockscreen wallpaper, or why am I getting punished for switching to Nova Launcher? Or why can't my DPI settings apply to the notification shade. No kidding the battery is awesome, nothing is allowed to run in the background and gets closed after you open a few apps. Also, the device is not as smooth as people make it seem. You do notice lag, and sometimes in places you wouldn't expect. For example, when YouTube plays as PIP, there's no way you're not gonna notice lag everywhere. Did that make me return the phone? No. But the screen issue did. And while returning, I decided to give the Note 9 a chance.
Note 9: Overall, the Note 9 has a better screen, slightly worse cameras, worse facial recognition, no notch! Worse one handed usability, slightly worse battery, much better speakers, a headphone jack! Comes with headphones you'll actually try to use, has a s-pen (not useful for me), AOD that is actually useful, and a better software experience. Do I hate Bixby? Yes. Am I able to remove Bixby and use nova launcher with zero problems? Yes. The battery probably gives me an hour less screen on time. But remember, this is with all my regular apps refreshing in the background and multitasking that keeps much more apps ready to go in the background. The screen is also noticibly better with better viewing angles and better implementation of how the rounded corners look. This phone actually seem to perform better as well. I don't care about Android versions or what nanometer is the processor... All I care about is my experience using the phone. And with the Note 9 it's simpler and smoother. Here for example, the phone doesn't lag when YouTube is in PIP mode or lags less when I'm double pressing the multitasking button (quick app switching). Having no notch allows me to see all my notification icons in the status bar, which is awesome. In terms of user and multimedia experience, this device delivers.
Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind in the future. As it stands now, the thought of returning this device and getting another Mate 20 Pro (potentially with a better screen) haven't crossed my mind...
Returning this device and getting another Huawei.
Samsung Note9 is not for you.
Was in the same boat had both, if I could just keep the facial unlock and cameras from the 20
both iris scanner and face unlock are obsolete coming of congress in Barcelona in 3 weeks, all flagships will greet us with punch hole cameras and in display scanners , same for P30 series on 31st march, with trend to get rid of that front facing camera gimmicks at the end of 2019. As for Note 9 vs Mate 20 pro there's absolutely no contest here to speak of, every professional reviewer concluded that current quad bayer sensors are lackluster compared to 12mp offerings which was to be expected.. hype train is pretty much the only thing Huawei has, and it lost momentum with poor processing and worst software experience on android
Hello, i also had the Mate 20 Pro since day one, and i had the famous LG screen problem , i had to return it and get another one, but after few weeks i couldn't stand the screen that is sooo edged, it was annoying to me, also the weird screen size, it looked so long and not even while watching videos, after all i had to return it and get the Note9 and i never looked back, i found Note9 screen to be a lot better, Always on display with full features is awesome unlike the Basic AOD on the Mate 20 Pro, and the One UI/ Android 9 update made the Note 9 even better.
Cheers

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus or Huawei Mate 20 Pro?

hey guys, mate is still best! What do you think???
https://youtu.be/6EHQvYTKSWo
i picked mate 20 pro because the the camera punch hole in the s10 would drive me completely insane, worst design i've ever seen on a phone i think
mate 20 here would trade if i could
s10+ becausemy opinion only)
its newer
best battery :less capacity but better performance
best sound: louder and clearer
best screen : its a samsung nothing can beat this guys
camera photo same results dxomarks but its release firmware so it will get even better
best selfie by far
best video by far: we all know mate 20 pro is very bad
best 4k and 4k60fps: jelly efect on mate. cant deal with 4k60fps
best slow mo not fake 960. mate 20 pro was a interpollated 240 fps to seem it is making 960 fps
i have a mate 20 pro because what i said was kinda valid instead of note 9 some months ago.
mate 30 or even p30 pro i think will beat s10+
this is a 3 months king phone period so what you choose today in months it will be old news.
Yeah, the s10+ on paper is better than mate 20 pro.
Better screen, a faster chip, louder speakers, better camera software ( imo mate 20 raw camera performance is better),...
But in day to day use there will not be any huge differences except the punch hole display vs notch. With that said most of the games or apps I use even with the hole punch u will have black bars on the side, hell even youtube app has those unless u are willing to zoom in and cut part of the video (I hate all those reviews on youtube that zoom in the content just for the sake of having it fullscreen while in reality u will have to deal with blackbars if u dont want to cut off the top and bottom).
One thing I absolutely love it about the mate 20 pro but others seems to sleep on is the charging speed. I usually fall as sleep while watching random stuffs on my phone at night. And this is when super charge come in to save my ass. It charges a whooping 70% after my brushing, showering and shaving routine in the next morning. Im doubted the s10+ or even future note 10 could do the same. For me thats a game changer, now I can freely enjoy my sleep without waking up in the middle of the night remembering havent charge the phone yet.
I have the S10 plus arriving this week.
Ultimately it will be nice to have a proper functional always on display again, the lack of this on the Mate 20 pro has become something that bugs me every day and if Huawei added a proper AOD I'd probably cancel my S10 pre-order. It will also be nice have the volume sync properly on my bluetooth headphones.
Is a shame as the Mate 20 pro gets so much right.

wow, orders a new phone just because of AOD? do you have to much money or sever OCD ither way hope u like your new s10+
yes i'm jelly
I will obviously be selling the Mate if I keep the S10+ I'm not made of money!
AOD is a feature that I value, hoped I'd get used to it on the M20 pro maybe if the LED was not so small I would have but ultimately it just continues to bug me.
Overall I think the S10+ is the better phone except for not having proper face unlock.
Huawei really do need to up their AOD game but can't see it happening.
I don't think the hole punch design would bother me. I've never been bothered by notches (I had an iPhone X before the M20pro.)
Still, I can't upgrade until November so will see what the Mate 30 Pro has to offer.
3D face unlock is a gimmick of the past, from now on manufacturers will rely on Under display sensors and maximizing screen to body ratio in the coming years, Samsung is light years ahead in terms of UX and unmatched audio/video quality for android device, although they slack with implementing new camera tech, it's a choice
i just got the mate 20 pro with my carrier . To get the s10 would of costed me 500$ extra so for me it was an easy decision to get the mate 20 pro.

2 things that are prolly the weakest points on this phone. However I have decided to keep the mate 20 pro (for now though I'm very tempted) and not get the s10 plus. For me the best feature of the mate is the super charge vs the slow ass charge on the s10. Like another poster above mentioned, I have not micro managed this phone charge wise ever since I got it. I used to charge all my Samsungs every night to 100 but on this phone I never do!
Also, I love the fact that EMUI desktop can be done wirelessly unlike the s10 plus Dex. There's just too many things that I really love about the mate. I have been on ever Galaxy s and note device ever been out. I just came from the note 9 , which is collecting dust, to the mate 20 pro and I really really love this phone. From the way it feels in the hand (it's still slimmer by about 2mm compared to the s10 plus, to the way it looks. I think it's very unique looking and much better than the generic looking s10. Also the mate is a beast and I still think that EMUI (no matter how much people hate it) is a far more optimized and efficient software than Samsung's. I'm running Nova launcher and I have it set just the way I like it, so EMUI doesn't give me anything negative, only the positive such as awesome battery management, supeer fast and responsive interact interface, etc...
What are others folks thoughts on this??

I am on the fence re S10 vs the plus. The normal 10 looks a great size and is slightly smaller than the mate too. I too had the Note, it was a beast but I managed it, it was also easier in the hand vs say the Xs max, I have also had the S9 plus. There is something about the normal S10 or Mate though that falls into that goldilocks zone size wise. I think the bigger phones are nice with the larger screen but even if you ignore the one-handed use thing they are also more of a burden to carry around at times.
I'm concerned re the camera and expect the mate to have the better shooter. The battery management on the Mate will also be better I think even if it does come with the downside of it sometimes shutting down apps that you do not want it too.
I'm currently in the same boat to renew my contract with my service provider and really struggle with the decision which phone to pick...
IMHO the Mate 20 Pro is still the best phone out there, but Huawei's and FunkyHuawei's recent stupidities are both not making this decision very easy.
I currently own a Sony and was always happy with it and their software / firmware update policy and speed, except for the bootloader unlock, which wipes a DRM key and breaks some phone capabilities, which can't be restored anymore. For older phones it's still possible to circumvent that, but forget it on newer phones. That drived me away from Sony and although I really love the Mate 20 Pro's specs and internals... I think I would have a very hard time without an unlocked bootloader. F***, why are companies so stupid?!
That said... and although I'm not a Samsung fanboy... I'm that close to just turn around from this phone and choose an S10 model or pick an LG instead. Also for a higher price... Currently I'm just desperately waiting if anybody provides a bootloader unlock service for Huawei and that recent dark chapter for this brand becomes again less relevant.
My 5 cents...
As far as I see it, Samsung is the Apple of Android so won't touch them. Never been one to go for the companies with the biggest advertising budgets mainly HTC's and Sony's perviously and now on the Mate 20 Pro and so far it's been exactly what I thought it would be. Some reviewers go on about how bad the EMUI skin is, can't say I'm too bothered, if I have to tap the screen once more than a Samsung device to get to a particular setting (you know one that's "buried deep down" in the system) then I'm sure I'll live. The S10+ is basically a Mate 20 pro with newer internals that give marginally better performance levels, in the real world there's no difference - you might lose 0.01 of a second opening an app - if that's too long to wait you might have to re-evaluate where you are right now Both phones will still be holding their own in two years time and with the Mate's price dropping steadily you could pick one up for £200 less than the S10+, is there that much of a difference between the two? No, paying £200 more for a name is the preserve of the rich or daft, and I'm neither of those

I could not agree more to the statements. Same as you I have also always chosen the underdogs (loved my HTC Desire HD by the way), but when you seriously start to think who actually are the current bad guys, I would not name Samsung first. IMHO companies should ship their phones with an unlocked bootloader and not penalize the users for unlocking their phones (Sony) or not allow them to do so (Huawei). If it would be still possible to get the unlock codes I wouldn't even think twice which phone to pick. Sadly as things stand I have to confess to consider buying my first Samsung phone. LG would also be an option, but the problem on the latter is as well, that they simply don't allow to unlock every of their phones... Crap...
The lack of proper face unlock on the S10 might be a deal breaker. It's now been proved to be really insecure. The face unlock on the Mate is amazing.
Apart from that, the phones are really similar.

Love my mate 20 pro, I was fortunate I didn't have the green screen problem! I do like switching phones but brought it outright and just on a monthly sim only contract for £10 a month.
As others have said, I used to charge my old Samsung's to 100% every night, I top mine up and normally keep mine between 25-85% doesn't really matter where as I have the 40w charger at work and home and can get that 50% in about 20 mins.
Love the phone wide angle & telephoto cameras, the reviews are raving about these on the s10plus but seem to forget these were already available for years on the LG G series and the mate 20 pro since Sept last year. I know there is a slightly wider FOV on the S10plus.
Going to keep going with the mate 20 pro battery has not seen any performance degrade over the 6 months I've had it too which is great, with Nova launcher I don't use the EMUI.
I choose s10+.
because finger reader better other phone. But I like face Id in iphone. Mate 20 pro face id is a joke.
And green screen problem, I skip mate 20 pro.

7 things I wish I knew before buying the K20 Pro

This isn't a rant, just things which I've noticed of considerable concern.
Hi, just a full disclosure. I bought a K20 Pro Chinese rom from Aliexpress, waited 3 months and watched a lot of reviews. I'm english speaking, so none of these issues were brought up in the video's I watched.
1) The speaker at the bottom is too easy to cover, as a right hand user. I cannot comfortably watch videos in portrait mode without accidentally concealing it.
2) The camera reflects its own infrared on closeup images of shiny objects.
https://imgur.com/9iCMfut
3) The display is not sharp. This clarity is comparable to the Galaxy S3, you can see the pixels individually and quite vividly. This makes icon edges appear blurry. I'll put this down to the low resolution, as compared to my 2k display of the Galaxy Note 5.
https://imgur.com/rExaM1Z
4) The display is very thin. Having come from the Galaxy Note 5, I'm used to a wider phone. But this is much to small to consume media in vertical form.
5) The battery life isn't great. It lasts a day, and only a day with medium use.
6) Gestures in Android 9 are broken. Specifically the 'recents gesture' and the 'go back'. I only had about a 10% success rate with the 'recents gesture', it just didn't want to work. Whereas the 'go back' gesture works a bit too well and I was constantly going back accidentally as you can swipe from either side.
7) MIUI is not good. I personally do not find it enjoyable to use.
Three months is a long time. I was getting impatient and got it after 30 days. I'll say I agree with the speaker being easy to cover, that being said you can just turn the phone upside down.
1) just turn device upside down.
2) weird thing indeed
3) pretty okay for the price, not best display ever, but not uncomfortable to me..
4)there's a choice here, if you make it too wide, you make it hard to use with a single hand...
5) pretty great here, I don't know what you call "medium use", but here I'm getting all day long (lasting around 25% in the end of it) with 7 hours of screen on... I consider it as hard use. It is not great compared to what, exactly?
6)never used it, can't opine...
7)I used to be a vanilla guy, miui stock is just awful for me. But, xiaomi.eu rom is pretty great, I believe you could give it a try. It is just what miui should be...
Cheers
I wasn't pleased too when i went from Galaxy s8 to one plus 5t about the display but you will get used to it believe me , it's a good display you will not notice any pixel after some time , almost every phone nowadays comes in FHD+ except high end Samsung , besides it's 6'4 inch it's really big
---------- Post added at 09:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:42 PM ----------
And you're completely wrong about the battery life maybe you have a faulty unit because the battery is amazing I'm getting 7 to 9 SOT
In my opinion:
1) Agree with you, but although I always (almost) use headphones it doesnt bother me. But, you can flip the phone to avoid this scenario...
2) Never noticed.
3) It is really not an ultra sharp display, but it is far from S3, which was ~300ppi, K20 is ~400ppi. Amoled pentile will hardly give an sharp display on FHD+ displays.
4) You are a long time whitout upgrading, thin phones are a trend since 2018. Last decent 16:9 phone was Huawei Mate 10.
5) Luckily you didnt buy other phones as this one have a great battery life on today standards.
6) It is necessary some time to get used and increase accuracy on gestures.
7) Having had mainly Samsungs, LGs, Motos, Huaweis and Xiaomis, I think MIUI is on par with EMUI (Huawei) and better than Samsung/LG/Moto.
Edit: Item 5. According to GSMArena, battery on K20 stands ~45% longer than Note5 for video playback. ~15% more for talking time, and ~25% more for browsing.
I don't know if the K20 Pro is different from the Mi 9T Pro but i can't agree on the unsharp display. Maybe with a magnifying glass but it is as sharp as any other phone i had before including my P30. Same for the battery life, i can easily hit 10 hours SOT in a day without having to charge it. Tried gestures, works well for me. The thin display isn't as good for videos, yes but overall it's quite nice to use/ handle. Also i'm okay with MIUI. It looks pretty nice and got some good customization options and it's certainly better than EMUI. But i can agree on it being a bit weird to use if you're used to stock Android.
Thanks for your positive feedback.
Someone suggested that I just rotate the phone 180 degrees to avoid covering the speaker, how does one enable this rotation in miui?
A suggestion was made about miui.eu, I plan to flash this when the 7 day unlock period expires.
Regarding the battery, it's just not revolutionary. Sitting around the 1 day mark. Has anyone had any positive battery life improvements using a custom kernel?

hmmm no way its comparable , fyi i still have mine retired S3 , a sammy user since galaxy S , size wise k20 pro its pretty standard , note series i is always consider a bigger size phone , similar one perhaps might be mi max ? battery seem good so far , sorry but older sammy phones model, battery life always fail me , gestures , never use , maybe i am old school , miui does take a while to get used to , just throw in a poco launcher ,never like miui messy home screen , and the price you paid for a sd855 , not sure what country you are from , a samsung comes with exynos chipset most of the time , cant expect top quality hardware in all aspect ?
1. This issue isn't exactly exclusive to the K20 Pro, many devices have bottom firing speakers, not really and issue for me. I am also right handed and I rarely cover the speaker when using it in landscape.
2. You can avoid the infrared reflection issue by switching to manual focus.
3. Imo the display is fine. You are just coming from a phone with a QHD display (you should have done your research before buying)
4. The display is supposed to be taller and the fact that its taller make its naturally narrower for its size (6.39") The aspect ratio (18:9) on the K20 Pro is is used on all modern flagships now as it is better suited to the portrait content that is consumed on a smartphone. and as for "This clarity is comparable to the Galaxy S3" either your device is faulty or you're just talking crap. The galaxy S3 has a pixel density of 306 ppi and the K20 Pro's display has a pixel density of 403 ppi which is more than a noticeable difference
5. Most people have reported great battery life. I have gotten 2 days on a single charge before and in some cases getting over 10 hours of screen on time unless you game then of course it wont last as long.
6. I haven't had any issues with MIUI gestures, they work perfectly fine for me.
7. I love MIUI, this is my first Xiaomi device. When I first ordered the device I didn't think I'd like MIUI and thought I would end up switching to a custom rom like Pixel Experience or Lineage but I learned to love it. MIUI has the best gestures, it looks awesome, it is well optimised and performs great with great battery life.
I did a considerable amount of research before buying. Some of the issue you have stated were mentioned like the bottom firing speaker, the display being FHD+, the infrared reflection wasn't an issue on your note 5 because the note 5 doesn't have laser autofocus (which can be disabled) this isnt really an issue its just an extra feature on the K20 Pro which you don't have to use.
The K20 Pro is far cheaper than any other current flagship out there, so you cant expect it to have all the same flagship features. They obviously had to save money in some areas, for example the display is FHD+ unlike some Samsung, LG, Sony and OnePlus devices which have QHD Displays, Gorilla Glass 5 instead of 6, no wireless charging, the type-c port is only USB 2.0, no IP rating when this devices has been proven to be considerably water resistant

+1 to all of this except 7.
MIUI does have some plus points, but for me, nowhere near enough to compensate for it's bad points. The only thing I miss is MIUI gestures.
I bought the phone knowing I'd be going to custom ROMs as soon as the bootloader could be unlocked.
With a good custom ROM, I cannot fault the phone for it's price point.
I gotta say that I think the battery life is absolutely insane (I came from a jailbroken iPhone X, but had tons of Xiaomis etc before). I charge it every evening but sometimes I just dont, because I got 60+ % and it jsut doesnt feel right.
I use the MIUI 11 ROM from xiaomi.eu, and I really loved MIUI since MIUI 6/7. I enjoyed some extra features(really great dark mode, always on display, dual apps, ...) and the visual look of it. As far as I know there are already quite a lot of roms with stock android for the phone.

You say it doesn't compensate for its bad point. If you're gonna say something like that then maybe you should enlighten us on what those bad points are.

My main issues are
Data Harvesting - on a worse scale than Google
Ads - which are convoluted to turn off, though it's supposed to be easier in MIUI 11
Bloatware - There is an immense amount of bloat, most of which cannot be removed. Compare the running services of a freshly booted phone running MIUI with, say, an AOSP ROM and see the vast increase MIUI is running, the majority if which you have no idea what or why.
It was developed to be, and still is to some degree, an iOS clone.
There were others and if I were to revert back to MIUI I'd remember what they were.

Do you own the indian variant or chinese? Apparently the indian has a lower quality display, that could explain why some people aren't finding that themselves, because I own the chinese and its pretty damn clear; Even comparing it to friends S9/S10's and latest iPhones.
The screen doesn't seem pixelated to me. Perhaps you're used to higher resolution displays. I've upgraded from the OnePlus 5 and haven't seen a reduction in image quality.
Gestures work fine for me. I didn't need an adjustment period, they were pretty intuitive and back works pretty much every time (with no accidental back swipes), while recents works like 9/10 times.
I don't have a problem with covering the speaker. When watching YouTube I grip the phone by the middle section with one hand, I don't hold it with both hands like when you play games.
Battery life isn't extraordinary, but it's decent compared to my OnePlus 5.
You can debloat most MIUI ROMs using the Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot tool.
Looking forward to trying miui 11. It's not officially available yet to Chinese rom users outside China.

xiaomi.eu is the way to go
Okay, real talk
point 5 is straight up trolling?
I have to charge mine like once in 2 days and you're talking about not great battery life - what the hell
A full charge gets me like 11 sometimes even 12 hours SoT with medium/normal usage (youtube, spotify, browsing, mails etc. - basically everything except games).
Do you game all day long or what?
what battery life do you expect anyway? Theres not many devices which can even last that long as the K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro does (with somewhat similar pefomance obviously)

OP must have a defective unit (battery, display). There is no way the display is 'poor' quality, compared to my 6T its much sharper and vivid. Battery life is also one of the best I have seen (less than 2% discharge overnight) I have been playing games on Dolphin, PPSSPP, etc and a full charge can easily last 4+ hours, and that's using emulators which are extreme battery hogs. Xiaomi have been pretty transparent about how and when they collect our data by giving us optout options nearly everywhere, which is something I cant say about other shady companies out there who are in the same line of business. Besides, data harvesting and adds can easily be tackled by debloating/flashing EU rom, where the 1st done doesn't even need root.
Finally coming from OOS the MIUI can be a pain to use but now I am beginning to like the features that it offers, for example, full-screen mode and gestures which I never thought would make my life so much easier. All in all this phone has been a wonderful upgrade for me and I couldn't be any happier.
