Has anyone checked if this article is trustworthy?
It's saying that Oreo is unofficially available for the US versions of the Note 8.

Personally, I won't be updating anything until it comes through officially via updates on the phone! I'm not going to muck about with my €1000 investment! I'm not even rooting this one! Usually I root to get rid of adverts but it seems that the Samsung adblockers seem to work well and paying €20 odd for their Disconnect Pro has stopped 90% of adverts coming through!

If you use Samsung internet there is an option to install! Disconnect Pro is more of a system wide adblocker, but doesn't always work ... especially Facebook!

I don't use my phone all that much, so ads don't matter to me. My wife's on hers all the time and gets so pissed off at the ads on Chrome. Especially the popups that block the whole screen and you have to tap a tiny little X to close.

Ben being oreo for more than week with no problems on tmobile variant.

I flashed the XEF firmware that I pulled from Samsung servers and I love it!
My Note is crazy fast now and no problems whatsoever

I've been using Samsung Browser for a while now. Had to get rid of Chrome after I started getting those pop-ups saying my device has been infected... Press here to clean your device. NEVER PRESS HERE!

Galaxy S5 Play edition

Apparently a play edition of the S5 is coming pretty soon since google started changing it's images on the listing for the S4 to images from the S5
I'm switching to their rom the day it gets ripped and posted for us to download
who else?
I was just about to post this. Yes it looks like it is imminent.

Yeah, and the rom from that phone should be an awesome one, all the features, none of the bloatware ^_^
Crap. I was hoping for this yesterday. I made a huge mistake on accepting some update that hit the phone today. It's about 42MB but nothing huge changed it appears. Looks like it was just for the screen casting dongle.

while there are bug fixes, i highly doubt they'll patch the particular exploit that allows us to root, and if they do, Chainfire will find another exploit in a matter of days, specially since the kernel source is available, so you'll always be able to root, don't worry about that.
I took a plunge and I managed to root the device with ChainFire. Now to wait for the GS5 Playstore edition
I wonder if all of those S5 models will make the porting of the playstore version harder?
Also, what's up with all those versions? Are they baseband-related only (aside from the ones with different processors)?

[T807AUCU1BOD4] Official Lollipop 5.0.2 OTA For AT&T Galaxy Tab S 10.5

The OTA is huge, to the tune of 1.1 GB, but I finally got it downloaded and installed. There are lots of UI tweaks and performance seems really good. Plus, the radio bug introduced with the NK1 update is fixed, so the cellular radio shouldn't randomly shut off anymore.
So far, I'm pretty happy with it. What say ye, fellow XDAers?

Not giving me a choice. Starts downloading as soon as I connect to Wifi. And I f*&#ing HATE TouchWiz. First thing I do on a Samsung device is install a launcher with even the most basic of customization options and disable the S-anything bloatware. SwiftKey is a better keyboard and Google (ya know; the stuff that's included with Android) is a better everything else.
Of course that's just my opinion but you asked why I don't want the update.

Did you try Adblock Fast that is build into Samsung 4.0? Download from App store and then manually setup using instructions.
I'm using it on my S7 with zero issues and no ads. Of course, limited to Samsung browser.
I'm using adguard which sets up personal VPN on phone to block ads. Seems to work for all apps but does hit battery life a bit. Worth it for me.

Bootloaders are locked. Flash secured and all. All us carriers, not the exynos, but all us snapdragons, including tmobile. We are on twitter and got a response from John Legere who claims to be working on a potential solution to at least getting tmobiles unlocked. Historically we have always been fine, but for some reason we aren't now. Doesn't make sense for the exynos to unlocked and SD to be locked imo

I'm sure something will come up eventually. Us folks on ATT are used to being screwed with the locked bootloaders. Think it might be new for T-Mobile users though. It might take a little longer, but ATT Samsung devices typically get root after some point.
I've had it since launch, my Nexus 6 basically died. I miss the debloating root allows, like how I'm forced to have the Directv app when I don't have any interest in having Directv. I do like it though it's a nice phone. If we can get root to remove the bloatware I'm for that otherwise I'll live with it for a year until something better drops.

I'm using it now as personal VPN on adguard was eating battery. Just make sure to set it for no ads (default is some safe ads). On some ads I was getting occasional pop-up ads.

VPNs like Adguard don't "eat" battery. What your seeing is that the system attributes all battery used by apps that access the internet to the VPN.

Seems like Pre-Lollipop builds were always hacked for root. Also, at least on my S5 G900A, Pre-rooted 5.0 was able to be flashed as long as the BL was kept OA1 (KK 4.4.4). But if you took the OTA to 5.0, no root ever! Also they totally locked it down with 5.1. FU ATT!!!!:silly:
But they sure did get into that S6 pretty fast, didn't they? Go figure.
I applied to this Samsung Mobile Insights program. Might get a free G935A or G930A if accepted into it. I do not know how I will live without root, but at least it has a sdcard. I do not have a good feeling about a battery that does not come out though...

VZW Bloatware - Not much on the N8

With my Note 7 and its inferior replacement, the S7E, Verizon had loaded both phones up with a plethora of bloatware. On top of what was preinstalled, I'd constantly find new apps magically appearing every so often.
I subsequently learned that the spontaneous new apps were installed without my permission by DT Ignite, malware (IMO) pre-installed by Verizon. Once that was disabled, things quieted down.
My Note 8 that arrived yesterday had far fewer initial crapware games and apps, and I can't find any evidence of DT Ignite in the Apps Manager. Has Verizon finally smartened up, or do you think they'll find another way to pollute our phones?

It's a background app installed by carriers that will download and install games and apps on your phone whether you want them or not. It's very annoying to purge your phone of bloatware only to see it come back mysteriously by itself.

I had used PDP (Package Disabler Pro) to disable nearly everything it recommended on my Note 7 and the S7E that replaced it, at least until Nougat was released. After the upgrade PDP didn't work anymore, but I pretty much knew what to disable by then and DT Ignite was at the top of my list. Nothing came back after I shut that down, and the 2 or 3 security updates VZW has pushed since then didn't re-enable it.
I'm cautiously optimistic that the Note 8 will stay fairly clean ... at least until Oreo is released for the N8.
et t-mobile tu, brute?
interesting discussion chaps.
i know this is a VZW thread and i apologize for the intercept, but is tmobile likely doing the same thing?
would this ignition program find such apps on t mobile? i get the note8 friday from tmobile (my other phones are unlocked non carrier version so this is the first time ill need to look for stuff like this)

Most of the totally useless crapware cannot be disabled without a package disabler app
FWIW, the one I usually use (Package Disabler Pro) is not working on my Note FE, but, BK Disabler is.
I'd say it's well worth the couple of dollars vs dealing with unwanted bloat ware...

I avoid disabling anything to avoid issues when updates are pushed - I never disabled DT Ignite on my VZW S8 and I never had anything pushed on my phone. Also if you don't want to be tracked, you're using the wrong operating system to begin with.

Good for you, seriously, but that wasn't my experience. I'd wake up to new, unwanted games and apps on my Note 7 and S7 Edge pretty regularly. And after disabling DT Ignite, I never had a problem with any of the updates, including the Nougat release for the S7E. I had to disable DT Ignite again after that installed, but the 3 security updates since have all installed just fine.
Not sure if this is the right place but here it goes. I actually use some VZW stuff. I like the native VZW to VZW video calling. I also love the VZW premium visual voicemail. The VZW cloud is handy, but I can do without.
Anyone know how I get this stuff?
You mean on a non Verizon issued Note 8 or something?
Not bloatware, but I'm pissed ours didn't get the upgrade for the swipe down on homescreen bringing down notifications rather than a 2nd app drawer command.

Not sure if the CSR was right, but she said there is an advance calling setting on the VZW N8 that I couldn't find on my unlocked Sammy N8. I have seen it before on my S8+ so I know What she is talking about.
I said maybe mine isn't provisioned correctly. She said she wasn't sure. I am going to call back tomorrow to speak with tech support

If you really want it, Nova Launcher can do this. I actually prefer using the fingerprint reader for this, though, and you don't need Nova Launcher for it (although I'd rather have Nova Launcher than not).
Yes action launcher does too but the Note is the only phone I usually use the default launcher with. The sensor isn't convenient to me yet.

Yes they did! I was cursing and saying the exact same thing.. It's just like the device manager that they took from us for well over a year.. They are always messing with something and taking it something.. And if you look at the date on the kernel, they took a good month to pull things. They're not trying to make sure anything works on their silly network.. They are just trying to remove features in the frail "hope" that it will make people upgrade to the new models.
Same thing for security patches.. Notice we didn't get one at all for 3 months, while Samsung had been rolling them out every month steady. All you have to do is either read here in some of the other threads, or simply sammobile. The latter always tells when they're is an update our patch to any Samsung device. And I just sat, read, and observed. They do this every year, with every single new devices far as Samsung is concerned.
They let Verizon do that to us. But yes, Verizon is as crooked a carrier, as a bent telephone pole.. I feel you what though, it makes me feel just the opposite. Why in the world would I, as a consumer keep investing money in a device that isn't cheap by a Longshot as far as cellular devices are concerned, when all they're going to do, is disable features, that the device was designed for by the manufacturer..
It really, at this price point to me is simply sickening.. And I really and utterly refuse....
