Settings keep stopping - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

After the last update I got an error saying SystemUi ha stopped when the phone rebooted. Did another restart and found out I cannot unlock the phone with my password and the worst thing is you cannot use biometrics to unlock it after a restart.
So I booted to safe mode, wiped cached partition and still no luck unlocking my phone and so im kind of locked out. Sreen just turns off or blacks out fmafter I enter my password then goes back to lock screen. After hours of frustration tried swiping the dialer icon and I was able to unlock the phone with my password then I can now use biometrics to unlock it but I still get SystemUi has stopped error message.
I dont want to have any more trouble getting in to the phone the next time I restart or in case the battery runs out so I went to settinga and tried to remove my password but I am getting error message Settings keeps stopping. So I am unable to remove the password. And basically anything I try to change in Settings that requires a password givew me the error message.
Things I have done so far.
1. Booted to safe mode
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Cleared Cache and App Data of following apps
Settings
Settings Storage
Storage Manager
Security Policy
System Ui
Touchwiz
Goggle Framework Services
Goggle Play Services
KNOX
4. Removed/Re Added google accounts
None of it has resolved the issue and I am not ready to do factory reset just yet.
Has anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you.
I have attached a screenshot of the error messages and software information

When you reboot the phone the password is required, that is correct behavior. With regards to SystemUI stopping, do you have any themes from the play store in use? If so, run your theme setting software to go in and remove any themes in use. Then uninstall that theme software and reboot. Let me know what happens...

Yes, I understand the password is required when rebooting but when I swipe from the padlock icon screen just turns off then reverts to lock screen but when I swipe from the phone/dialer icon from the bottom left I can unlock with a password.
I will try your suggestions with regards to the themes.
Thank you.

With regards to the swipe/pwd vs fingerprint I think t have at might be in n settings somewhere. I just wanted to add the reason why the themes are an issue. They actually replace the part of each program that specifies what colors that program uses (ie settings app). The problem is, the theme app only works with a specific version of each of the other apps. When there is a mismatch then the app whose colors are being changed crashes. So whenever you get apps updated on your phone, whenever one of those apps has a new version that is different from the version the theme app expects, that updated app many times will crash. When I discovered this, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle - I removed the custom theme stuff and my crashes went away...

I have uninstalled all themes, wallpapers, icons and fonts but did not resolve the issue.
Pretty much my phones theme looks like it was out of the box.
I only get the System UI error when I reboot the phone and the "settings keeps stopping" error when I try to change a setting that requires my password like trying to disable security so I can just unlock my phone without PW/fingerprint.
At this point I'm a bit more concerned with the "Settings keeps stopping" error as I feel if we can resolve the issue it will also resolve all the other issues I mentioned.

I've had one or two or three similar issues, eg " Settings keeps stopping ...,, over the past few years.
I tried everything and my experience /conclusion (afterwards) was that it was some 3rd party app that corrupted my firmware. Once it's corrupted, you might
find /uninstall the culprit.... but your
eg. Settings keeps stopping is corrupted!
and will give errors /issues etc.
In my case i either did a full factory reset or flashed my latest stock Rom
Plse note if you do a dirty flash
it's not going to help.
So i would suggest keep stressing and look for the culprit or rather do clean factory reset /flash correct latest stock Rom for your device.
Post note
I must add i don't use any lockscreen.
So the lockscreen , never really was a issue for me.
Yes the "Settings keep stopping" was..!
Anyway with my setup, I don't need it.
Just be careful you are not again locked out
of your device.

I have done a full factory reset rather than trying to find out the culprit.
It has been ok so far.
I have restored my backup and I have never encountered any issues so far.

Hi,
Yes I did as I have ran out of options to try. Something must have got corrupted during the upgrade.

I HAVE FOUND THE CULPRIT!
"Settings keeps stopping" occured to me after a minor OTA system update. My device is a S9+ non rooted.
It wasn't sub stratum for me. The culprit is the beloved "Swift Installer". It allows me to theme the notification bar colors, system UI colors to Dark mode(or other colors of your choice). It is essential to me. I particularly removed the settings part so it theming no longer applies to it. Rebooted and it WORKS. I love it how swift installer allows management of theming of each particularly elements. Settings become bright white again but I'm sure there's a way to figure it out.
*EDIT: Applying the swift installer update for settings brought back the modded settings UI.
Finding the culprit is important if you do mod your phone even to the lightest degree. Clean hard reset does the magic but you will go back to the same trail eventually. Hope this helps.

[Q] No Group MMS Threading!!

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I got my Nexus 4 (Yeah!), started it up, logged into my google acct, everything started downloading/restoring from google. I checked out the Messaging app and settings, and noticed a "group messages" setting. Sweet!!! But then I got a system update notification. I obviously installed it. After installing it, I used gobackup pro to restore my messaging threads. NOT THE APP, just the threads. Checking the settings again, the "group messages" setting was gone! Just gone! Not sure if it was the system update, or the thread restore, but I am perplexed. I've done 2 factory resets since, but the setting is still gone. Messaging ver. is 4.2-57622 or something like that (don't have the phone with me at the moment.) I'm guessing it had to do with the system update, and that is why it's still not there after the factory resets, but, I really have no idea. I am stock, no root, or unlocked bootloader. Stock, pure stock (the reason I bought a nexus device). Any help or related info would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere, and seem to be the only one with this issue. Any screenshots of anyone else's messaging settings running that app version would help too. Thanks
You'd probably get more help if this was in the Q&A section.

Man, I'm confused. I have no idea what happened. The group part is totally omitted from mine. I've tried to reinstall the app, but can't get very far without root. Thank you for the screenshot. At least I know that the setting isn't just hidden in the Ota update.
Have you tried the reset settings to default option? Or clearing the data for the messaging app?

Yeah, done both. One thing someone just said in another thread, isit may be carrier dependent, and the OTA update hides the setting unless your carrier supports it. Being as I have only played with the phone on wifi just to make sure I am happy with it and don't want to return it,(as it is a christmas present ) I'm starting to wonder if that is my problem. I have no sim installed, so the settings may be hidden until you pop a sim in and the phone recognizes that your carrier supports it.

New Update is here! Here is how to force pull an OTA update

go to settings, more, application manager, all, and clear data, then stop services for google services framework....then go into system update and update samsung software...... you may have to do that up to 10x with a few restarts in between
also you need to at least have 35% battery
works everytime for me!
if you notice after you clear data and go to system update, it shows that it last checked i 1969......this somehow resets the que and puts you in front of the line
Although this update fixed my red hues during black backgrounds, it added the purple blur/smearing thing when scrolling though quickly...at least we know its a software problem and not hardware
Ok...
I'm going to put this here as I did in the 2 other ota threads.. would someone please grab a log of the link (or grab the download prior to try to install) if they are getting propmted so we can get this to look at?
A bunch of people talking about it, no one trying to get it?
Not sure how. I would be happy to grab the download and get it to someone.

Depends on how people are getting the prompt.. Within the other thread, one of the three anyway, there was this post by a rooted user that had the fail..
This would be ideal because it should have been sitting in /cache (as we've seen on other devices) and it could simply have been pulled.
The only other option (and it will probably not be successful without root but worth a try) would be getting a logcat (running log during process), then forcing the prompt by clearing framework in hopes of catching the download link when the prompt arrives and tapping it. Pull log, inpect it for link and go and get it manually.

Another possible method of grabbing files on a non rooted phone is airdroid app. Connect with PC, choose files folder. By default it will go to the SD card but you can back up and get to the phone's system files after a warning screen. If the theory works, just start poking around the file system until you find the update and download it to the computer. You can't edit anything with airdroid but you can grab files at least if you're not rooted. I've never tried this but did see it show the phone's internal files when trying to get to external storage when the default go to folder was internal storage.
Got my update, turned off dev mode, force stopped google services framework, and cleared data.
So much smoother

Two Note 3's - two different experiences

My wife and I got new Note 3's last Saturday. I rooted them both with Kingo's root, both are rooted no problem. But hers keeps giving up "Touchwiz home has stopped" FC's.... now she's all upset wanting to take it back to stock so it'll stop FC'ing - has anyone else seen this? They are both MJ5 AT&T Note 3's SM900A. No custom roms or recovery, just the root/SU access.

Why did you root your wifes phone? What changes did you make?
Is it happening when she's trying to select a widget? It would force close on me when I tried that before. To fix it I opened the application manager and wiped data and cache for touchwiz home. I had to replace all my app icons after doing so which is no biggie.
You can also pick a different home launcher like go launcher, nova, apex, etc....

She wanted it rooted so she could put on Ad-Away. We both prefer the Touchwiz launcher and I'm just dumbfounded as to why mine is fine and hers keeps force closing. It happens when you hit the home button one too many times when coming out of Facebook and at other random times.
it might be a app conflicting with touchwiz you might try doing a factory reset and then install apps one at a time and see if the problem comes back
When you furiously click buttons, things start to go wrong. One click is enough.
I can sit here on TW and assault the home key to exit an app. Doesn't make it go any fast and makes things act up.

Unlocked US x Samsung Calendar app

I am unable to update the calendar app, I used smart switch and didn't check before hand. I have attached screenshots .Bixby says I need to update for features to work, and the app itself has an icon saying to update.
Ok, well the fix was to wipe and reload from scratch. I had went from Note 5 to Note 7 to Note 7 to S7Edge to Note8 using smart switch, and I believe that caused the trouble.
Just in case anyone else gets this trouble.
Sent from my Galaxy Note8 using XDA Labs
Since programs get updated constantly, there is a good chance something is changed, then you load old data into newer version of program and bug can show later in unpredictable places. I try to avoid smart switch and similar programs as much as I can. Contacts it's the only thing I export and then import to the new phone.

Note 8 SM-N950F After pie update Nova launcher Issue

Hi,
Yesterday i updated my note-8 with official Pie via OTA. Update installed successfully no issue.
But now my phone is lagging and slow while i am using Nova launcher prime (ver: 5.5.4) on it. While gesture is on or off both ways its acting weird, slow, lagging even if i want to open notification panel it open after sometimes or you have to swipe it few times.
I even wipe the cache partition that didn't work. One UI launcher is working fine without any issue or lag.:crying:
I tried new version and beta 6 of nova launcher as well same results.
Please help me how to solve this issue, anyone else is facing the same issue or not.
i would recommend a full factory reset , i did the same (using nova launcher)
