Mine always stays where ever put the slider. But then, I have auto brightness off.
Yeah what version you got? Wish we had outside mode.
I have a 950F exynos 128 GB, and It does not have such setting...
Because it's samsung. They will probably never make a good software. Just search for "automatic brightness bug". They just ignored this problem. No wonder they just hidding that option.
Outdoor mode can be enabled by editing something in system folder. Most of custom firmwares provides that function.
I've never seen that setting on mine. It's automatic for me.

IT is not a bug, and yes, there are ways to increase brightness beyond standard maximum, I remember from the days of my note 3, that many people posted very bad screen burn in and excesive batt drain when changing the lines to attain the most bright screen possible, same applies to speakers, might as well get blown, The auto brightness in note 8, in fact is very well implemented, because it learns your preferences, that is, if set to auto, and you move the slider, whenever the phone detects the same lux level, it will set the level you chose, infact, when in autobrightness, when sensing too much light, it will set an extra ammount of brightness

Agreed. Works very well. Was using GPS Google maps for the first time yesterday, screen was automatically too bright. I used slider to lower brightness, it learned my preference.

Since long I haven't seen any Note device (at least International versions) have Outdoor mode enabled by default unless you are using custom ROM. But this mode i have seen available on low range samsung devices. Actually it is hidden and one minor change in settings app enough to enable outdoor mode.
I will try to make small app without making changes in setting app, though it might needed root access.
Thank you dr ketan! I have used your excellent roms and kernels in my note 3 and 4

so the app acts like a toggle to turn on the outdoor mode, pretty cool!
Works perfectly. Thank you.
Have noticed this mod seems to time out after 15 minutes or so. Any workaround for this?

I too am having the same issue, however i believe that my issues is slightly different from yours. I noticed maybe about 2 days after i purchased the phone that mostly anytime I am using the browser, whether it be Chrome or the stock browser my screen automatically adjusts itself. I went into settings and made sure that the brightness was not set at "Auto" and turned all the way up. I also made sure that reading mode, auto adjust screen tone, and color adjustment were all turned off. I also changed the screen mode to dynamic and I seem to still have this same issue. I read on another forum for T-Mobile users that there are a lot of consumers experiencing this same issue, not sure if carriers are doing swap outs for the phones as this may not be related to a HW issue but rather a SW issue.
That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Except I work outside, so when it does this it's impossible to see my phone. If you get a chance the next time this happens can you go into settings and open the brightness slider to see if you also can get this error message to appear? That seems to be the only place I find the message, it doesn't just pop up or anything. I too have checked like 10 times to make sure all the other display settings are correct, like automatically adjust tone and such. It sucks that auto brightness cannot be fine tune with the slider like it could on the note 2. I'm finding it very strange that instead of adding to features of the Note 2 to make this phone better in every area they chose to remove some great features leaving me wishing I did not upgrade.

It sounds like thermal throttling. LG phones have this, in particular the Optimus G and G Pro. I haven't had the problem on my G2 yet. It's designed to lower the brightness and lower the cpu speed in order to keep the phone from overheating.

True my LG Optimus G pro does this but there is a way to turn it off in the system menu accessible from the dialer. I have turned mine off and the phone no longer does this and has not gotten hot or anything. Wish there was a way to do this on the samsung as my S4 exhibits this same behavior.
I'm thinking about getting a Note 3 today so I'm hoping can be shut off too. I shut it off on my G Pro and the G2 doesn't do it, which I'm very thankful for since I work outside as well.

Note 3 automatic brightness settings problems
I have a Samsung Note 3 phone bought in Germany. I have the some strange problems with brightness settings too. Typically from time to time the phone screen just get too dark. Particular in economic mode the phone can get from time to time very dark and even setting auto brightness to +5 does not help.
I was using before both Iphone 5 and the first Samsung Note and some other phones and automatic brightness control was always working fine. In my new Note 3 the brightness is jumping sometimes suddenly.
JVogle: You can adjust the automatic brightness by pulling slider up or down. It can by set from -5 to +5. But in my case this thing do not help so much. Particularly this is a bigger problem again in economic mode.
This is rather a software issue, because when I switch to manual brightness it stays constant all the time.
Anybody knows how to cure it?
This is so annoying. Gotta wonder if it's a bug in one of Samsungs ****ty features causing it to happen so much. Even without brightness all the way up it happens

You have a different phone than me apparently. Also a different issue, as I'm referring ONLY to manual screen brightness setting. I would expect fluctuations with auto brightness. I've never had a device fluctuate when manually set to a desired % though. I also can't believe they removed the ability to adjust slider with auto brightness. Sadly the only thing better about this phone than my Note2 is the specs. The software and user experience has been sub Note2 for me in every aspect. I will most likely be switching back to the Note2.

I believe you are wrong about this. The auto brightness is adaptable, in the sense that you can set it manually wherever you want in different comditions and it will learn your preferences and interpolate. I actually find it very flexible.

do you mean that it has a new functionality that has not been in old phones? I have the Note 4 and it works like a charm, but the note 8 auto brightness works strangely, when I'm in a room with low brightness the screen light goes so dim that I can barely see anything!
Ive experienced the same thing, I have to do a screen lock for its auto brightness to work correctly
Hi,
(sorry for my English)
Your message was one month ago but I reply just in case some people have the same issue.
You have to call samsung about your issue. I have done that there are 2 months ago and Samsung are going to change the settings only if they have lot of complaint about this weird behaviour of the note 8, S8 and S8+.
The new settings of the auto brightness is "smart" but often it's more like "lost" than "smart"... :/
I adked to Samsung to give 3 choices for the settings of the auto brightness for the user instead of 2:
1) manually
2) auto "smart"
3) auto "not smart" => so the phone adjust the brightness depending only of the light sensor.
They told me that my proposition can be integrate only if they received lot of complaint.
Seems to come with last update
I can confirm am having the exact issue..
Brightness doesn't seem to auto adjust. Even after a reboot. The issue seems to come during the last update - the update where now we can have video lockscreen and animated AODs.
Hope this is resolved soon.

That's strange. My auto brightness worked fine up until the latest update. It is the August update that caused the problem for me.
Actually, providinf an update on the matter.
Some days later, situation came back to square one!
Not working:
Light sensor
Heart Rate sensor
Proximity sensor
Gyro sensor
Magnet sensor
Accelerometer
Just fingerprint sensor seems to be working fine.
I was on a trip in Malaysia and was at a Samsung store. They told me this is a very common issue and easily solved by 'software update' but when I went on to the service centre, they denied me since my phone was bought in different country. Phff
If the next OS update doesn't resolve this then I would recommend that you take your device to a Samsung Service Center
Anyone got their unresponsive device working back again ?
Does anyone else have this issue? Every time you lock/unlock the brightness auto adjusts again (and it adjusts pretty low)
So even if I manually set it to 100% and lock/unlock it will be down to 25% again. Doesn't seem like it's learning at all

Seems like a bug honestly, because it goes TOO LOW. I tried to lock the device several times to see if the "learning" of the slider improves, but it still goes back to the same spot... I'm gonna keep it deactivated until they fix it.
Android Pie has AI in basically everything and it learns for you, just keep adjusting the brightness manually and in a few days it'll know how you like your brightness and adjust it for you.
I care about to go low! And now I can't go below 19% with Adaptive ON, it's to high for a dark room.

Actually I've been reading similar things about this on the pixel so it might just be the way it is. Might take long for it to learn. I read someone say it's always fun when he first unlocks it

Yeah it could be the new implementation of the AI, I'm gonna use it for a few days to see if it gets better
This has started happening to me since yesterday. I've been using Pie for a month now (December update). What I've noticed is that it goes down to about 25% every time I cover the brightness sensor with my finger (usually when watching YT) and it stays there no matter what. It's pretty annoying having to always adjust it like that. Using "Sensors Monitor" app I see that the sensor is working correctly so it's a software "feature".
Any suggestions on how to mitigate it besides using "Velis Auto Brightness" app?
How do we know its 'AI'? Has it 'adapted' for anyone till now? That brings us tk the question, what was wrong with Auto Brightness in Oreo? Just because there's piece of code that's new, doesn't mean its versatile.

Yeah, and some of us would be fixing what was intentionally broke. Interesting, what would Android be without the community working as the underdog?
Oh, and AI (its Computational Intelligence) is the new cheaper, efficient corporate slave working to enslave the many.
I think it's just not possible to manually set highest brightness of display in Android 9. But is there any way how to set it via some app or edit something?
I know there is toggle for adaptive brightness, but setting it for full brightness will just make display cca 70% of possible brightness. The 100% brightness is on only when sunlight comes to the light sensor. When I use Note9 for flying DJI drone on sunlight, I want to have 100% display brightness for that 10 minutes of flight. It's just sooo annoying that I have to use separate flashlight - shining to the Note9 sensor to have full brightness on sunny day in shadow. Otherwise, just manually set brightness is not enough for flying and reflections are stronger than display...
Thanks for ideas!
jd14771 said:
Really easy fix..
- pull down notifications
-expand all notifications
-expand brightness settings by hitting the downward facing arrow (brightness settings)
- select "show brightness settings on top"
Now you can bump up your display brightness for those 10 minutes. It would be absurd to spend any more time on an app selection

Thanks, but I can say I'm kind of poweruser So again - When you set brightness manually all the way up, it's just 70% of possible brightness. It still uses light sensor to detect light and if you face the sensor (still manually on full) towards the sun, ONLY THAN you'll get 100% of hardware brightness.
Haha, okay... Maybe somebody else with Note9 and experience with Samsung's "outdoor display mode" may know. Anyway, see the attached image, maybe you get that point from other user...
I've use to do it on my Note 2 this way, I don't know if it will be any help. I know what you mean, the extra brightness is there, you just want to be able to switch it manually.

There are a number of apps in the 'Playstore' that purport to do what you want.
The one that I use is called 'High Brightness Mode', it's a free app and enables you to place a widget that can be used to manually crank up the brightness to beyond the 100% shown by the brightness indicator,.
According to the instructions, it goes a lot higher if your device is 'rooted', but nonetheless works on 'unrooted devices too.
It seems rooting is the only way how ti get 100% brightness...

Yes, but as the OP was trying to point out, the software absolute max is actually about 15-20% below the hardware absolute max capability.
This can be enabled by tweaking the sys file related to brightness, to rewrite the specific line, you need to be 'rooted'.
jd14771 said:
I have yet to see you provide instructions on how to do that.
regardless you dont need to be rooted to get the extra brightness, conditions have to be met in order to save the screen from burn in abuse. There are tons of people reporting burn in from the outdoor mode. it only make sense that only adaptive brightness can take the screen into danger territory, probably has safegaurds built in to avoid damage to this $1000 phone. so far ive provided more insight than anyone.

Once 'rooted' there are a number of 'Magisk/Xposed' modules that can be installed to push the brightness beyond what's available by default.
Did you want me to detail the 'rooting' and install process?

The brightness slider full to the right, regardless of the adaptive brightness setting is as bright as the phone gets.
How do I know this? Because e-ticket apps such as Ticketmaster and mobile payment apps like Samsung Pay go full brightness when showing barcodes, and there is no difference between manually set 100% brightness and 100% brightness when set by Ticketmaster and Samsung Pay.
The problem you are facing is caused by those who wrote the software that displays the video feed from the drone.

incorrect, the sun brightness method as well as youtube and the photos app does go brighter than the screen is normally i have max brightness past the line adaptive brightness off performance mode turned on with brightness set to 10+ specifically which boosts the brightness past the normal brightness as well as vivid mode but still not the same as the brightness you get in youtube apps or on the photos app, the xperia 1 and xperia 5 does this too and i thought it was specific to them.

Hello, 3 days ago I bought oppo x3 pro. Phone is awesome, but auto brightness works very bad... It keep decreasing screen brightness to very low level.
I never seen something like that, Samsung S20 works much better, well, even realme x50 works normal. To use phone I had to disable auto brightness. Is there anything like adaptive screen brightness, I read somewhere that samsung by the time learn my preferences, and keep good brightness. Tired this with oppo for 3 days, but seems it doesn't have that option.

If it is the same mechanism as in OnePlus (not sure about it) - then the phone will "learn" after you manually set the brightness to proper level. Give it 2 weeks.

Try clearing system cache and data in the relevant apks.
Test the light level sensor to see if it falls within an acceptable range.
I use manual brightness control almost always; doing so saves battery, retinas and sanity.
It also reminds you when it's too bright and your frying your display.
Same here. Helped me out with Lux Brightness and set the minimum brightness to 30. Works fine for me.
To me in Realme 8 it seems to have learn a minimum value for auto brightness instantly, I just set a minimum a little above of the default level (It was very low), and the phone remember that level onwards
well, mine surely isn't 'learning', it keeps defaulting to the lowest value, which is waaay to low.
Are there any alternatives to Lux Brightness that you know off?

What happens to me is that the default auto brightness deactivates itself when it wants, and reactivates also when it wants, very annoying. So I deactivated manually the auto brightness and tried Velis Auto Brightness, this app is a little complicated but works quite well, just you have first to understand the app itself and then tweak a little to your convenience. It has a little bug in Android 11, the notification of lux and % of brightness screen disappears after some time but doesn't affect the app itself. Take a look https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.velis.auto.brightness
