[GUIDE] Changing min width/DPI of MIUI 9 without rooting - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi all, this may have its own dedicated thread but I was not able to find it during my time with my Mi 6 and Mix 2.
When I moved over to MIUI I was shocked that they removed Min Width in Developer Options, because opening apps such as Telegram gave it such a horrid text size I could not adjust.
This will require you to have 5 minutes of your lunch break, a PC, and also depending on where you are accessing your Mi device, a VPN.
ATTENTION: To those who have used this command before on other devices, the device WILL RETAIN the density after a reboot. Don't worry about doing this every reboot, because you DO NOT HAVE TO.
NOTE: This will NOT cause any reboots of any kind, and you can still use themes from MIUI or wherever. The only apps I have noticed have a weird design will be the Themes app, where the app will look off tilted. Other than that, Xiaomi should have just left this in instead of neglecting their own app's density adaptation.

Turn off wifi, and ensure your device is linked to a Mi Account
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap MIUI Version 7 times
Go back, and go to Additional Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging
Then click on USB Debugging (Security settings)
Go through the three prompted Apply dialogs with countdown, and ensure the toggle is enabled.
If it isn't, ensure your wifi is disabled, mobile data is enabled and Mi account is linked
Go to a PC with adb set up: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 (Windows)
Open a Command prompt and type:
Code:
adb shell
wm density 380
exit
I picked 380, but you can make it smaller
To reset the density, type:
Code:
adb shell
wm density reset
exit
I am not living in a China based region!
Turn off wifi, and ensure your device is linked to a Mi Account
Install a VPN, such as Tunnelbear, and VPN back to an HK or China server (REQUIRED): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tunnelbear.android&hl=en
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap MIUI Version 7 times

I assume the vpn is for turning on ADB debugging? Does the global ROM require this as well? I'm 99% that I've used it without a vpn (though, my device is unlocked). I can't confirm now though as I'm no longer on MIUI.

USB Debugging (Security settings) only.
I am on global ROM.
Having your device BL unlocked means most, if not all restrictions have been lifted.

I've tried the adb shell method a few times before on MIUI 9 on my Mi4 (from 480 to 400), but it wrecks the notification shade, especially on the quick tiles (it enlarge by themselves) and some notification row icons (somehow the icons ended up having small black-ish frame overlaid on the top-left). Possibly only on MM MIUI 9, since that's all Mi4 gets at best.
Is it because of how MIUI theming heavily uses bitmaps (with flawed asset scaling on their own default theme) rather than vector drawables for their glyphs?

Great work around buddy, but in the end you'll have to change the rows and columns size too as those look horrid then.
Though I used EasyDPI and Xposed to rearrange these BASIC settings, one can always use the Default Theme Layouts.

Hmm that's weird, I never had issues with my notification shade.
That is a possibility if they don't use vector drawables, but I believe it's just like how Samsung once upon a time made all their apps at a fixed DPI so scaling just looks really bad.
I've been using default theme and another theme called Flam[DD] and changing DPI works flawlessly.

Do you mean for the notification toggles? Yeah, it's pretty bad, but I usually don't root so it's better than seeing huge texts in apps haha.

Yeah the toggles and even the rows and colums in a folder. These are actually basic things. Have to do these after every Weekly Updates too. Sucks.

Thanks for the nice Guide!! Works awesome on my Mi Max 2.
Cheers!

The following may be much easier. You don't need adb, unlock or root.
http://en.miui.com/thread-1093064-7-1.html
I confirmed this works on MIUI 9 Chinese stable ROM with developer mode turned on.
In advance you have to install Google Play. As you know, this doesn't require unlock or root.
http://en.miui.com/thread-718159-1-1.html

Finding difficult using this on my windows 10
Can't find adb on my device manager

I did this on my Redmi Note 5 Global and I didn't need to use a VPN. Thanks!

succeeded!
I just root my mi 6x and have it done on "termux",
guess my custom roms days are over, I can just live with whatever miui with the custom dpi )

Hey guys
I just published my first serious app on the android market and would like to give some of you the opportunity to test it for free. edit: sorry, i cant give away any more test licenses. but i released a trial app, so everyone can now test it for free
The app is called Delayed Lock and simply delays the activation of the secure lockscreen for a user definied amount of time or while connected to WiFi/Bluetooth. You can choose to start the activation timer whether on the last successful unlock or on display off time and immediately reenable the lockscreen through a notification in the status bar or a widget.
Main Features:
Delayes the requirement to enter pattern/PIN/password again after succesfully unlocked once
No lockscreen while connected to certain WiFi network or Bluetooth devices
Time delay since "Screen off" or since "Last unlock"
Quickly re-enable the lock through the Android notification bar or a widget
Widgets & Shortcuts: Toggle Lock, Screen off, Screen off & Lock, Enable / Disable DelayedLock
Free plugins: Disable lockscreen while at certain locations or use the Tasker app to control the lockscreen
automatically wipe the device after several failed unlocks
auto disable USB-debugging on rooted devices (on 4.0 - 4.2.1, not necessary on 4.2.2+)
FAQ:
Here: http://j4velin-systems.de/faq/index.php?app=dl
General limitations:
Does not work if your Exchange policy requires a PIN! (might work if your device is rooted though)
Pattern lock & FaceUnlock require root on Android 4.0+
Does not work on all devices, see section Device incompatibility
Requires root if full device encryption is enabled
Incompatible with NoLED, No Lock & some other apps
Please use the "Uninstall" option from within the app to uninstall it
Device incompatibility:
Some HTC devices: Pattern lock might not work
Some Samung devices: Notification bar might be accessable even in locked state
Samsung Galaxy S5: User reported that after 3 days, the device does not accept the PIN/password any more. Make sure you enable the "Android Device Manager" to remotely change your password in case this happens! Also try to disable the fingerprint feature before setting up Delayed Lock
Plugins:
Location Plugin: Locks when leaving certain locations
RemoteLock Plugin: Locks the device when receiving a SMS containing a defined keyword
Tasker Plugin by Ingenium13

I can't find it on the Market...Is it only for 2.2 Android?
oh yeah i forgot to mention that it requires at least Android 2.2 at the moment.
but I'm also beta testing the same app but for older Android versions, so if you would like to try that I'll pm you the apk
Damn... Is it possible to make it work with 2.1???
The app the QR code points to is a paid app. There is no free version.
just pm me your gmail address so i can send you the apk and enable a test license. i will also release a free/trial version, but i havent thought about the restrictions yet
Thanks, but it is not because of the half buck you want for your app, it is not even about commercial apps - I have no problems with them.
But I will have problems with this forum if it (or parts of it) turns into a support forum for commercial apps. And your app qualifies as commercial, since, as things stand now, it is not available in another form.
oh I'm sorry, it didnt want to violate the board rules. i was just looking for some guys who would like to help me test my app on more acutal devices (emulator kinda sucks on lockscreen stuff) and didnt know where to find them except here ^^
i dont think i'm able to delete the thread, but if a moderator reads this...
Yes, one of the prerequisites for having a thread here is that there must be at least a free/crippled version for the members to test. Having a sorely paid or individually selected sent app is not allowed iirc.
im willing to test on my mytouch4g running 2.2.1
Really annoying how the trial version displays that screen after unlocking. But it did get me to buy the app Good price too.
yeah, that was my intention
it's the lowest possible price in the market, hope to get my registration fee back that way ^^
J4velin -
Thanks. I'm actually trying to import my Pathfinder RPG books into Alkindo and of course my screen timed out. Luckily, I'd already installed DelayedLocker and BLAM! no having to swipe the screen unlocker or type in my pin.
I'm on a TrulyEpicRebirth 1.5 with Theme 1.7 - and it works nicely.
This is better in the longer term regarding time than NoLock, as that completely removes the lock swipe (not sure if that app also works with the password/pin). Something that allows me to quickly re-require the swipe/password and auto re-lock would be nice (especially something that could fit in my GoLauncher [or other home program] dock).
well, to quickly reactivate the lockscreen you can click on the notification in the status bar or use the widget in the paid version.
a shortcut for the launcher docks is also a good idea, i will keep that in mind
Has anyone else had trouble uninstalling the free version of this program? That screen after unlocking my phone is rather annoying and every time I try to uninstall it, it fails.
just read the app description in the market, the text under 'Revoke locking permission' in the settings or the 'FAQ' in the first post here:

You have to revoke the locking permissions first. Therefore go to the android security settings and tap 'select device administrators'

i just changes some stuff in the app and it should now be compatible down to android 1.5.
therefore i need some testers with a device running an android version lower than 2.2. pm me your gmail address if you're interested
Hi there,
I've just sent you an e-mail about the 1.1 version and WidgetLocker.

Steve
Hi, I'm excitedly trying the app as I've ben waiting for this ever since Froyo destroyed my previous solution.
Is it possible to distinguish between the pattern lock screen and the swipe-to-unlock screen. Personally I like the swipe to unlock to protect me from accidental power ons (and I have trackpad to unlock to make it even easier). However, I want to extend the time before the lock pattern comes on from 15 minutes to 1 hour.
Your app seems to elimiante both locks screens in that period.
I also personally like the swipe to unlock.
I can small problem with Cyberion Voice Dial, can't dial voice when phone is locked, can you make option to switch lock off when paired BT device is connected?

find my mobile?

I have a VZW note 5 and I don't have the find my mobile option in settings, was this excluded for VZW or am I missing something on my phone?
Thanks!

the reviews on that app aren't very good, I've watched a couple of Note 5 tips and tricks youtube videos and it seems to be baked in on some devices. I think both videos used AT&T phones, so maybe that's it?
I think it's pretty good and easyu to use. Just install the app and login into Google account. If you lose your phone, login to your Google account and type find my phone. That's all. Simple.

i've been using that app for a while now. it's no longer even a matter of it ever updating my current device anymore - it has never shown the correct device at all. you're better off going to the webpage version.

Find my Mobile's pretty cool and I used it on my international devices for years when there was no ADM. Surprisingly, AT&T didn't maim it. It's easy to use and manage across multiple devices and is both fast and accurate even on "GPS only." Here's what it can do.

I have Find My Mobile, but I don't have reactivation lock...and that sucks as it was a pain to bypass
So I guess it's a per carrier or per market thing. I'll give ADM a try.

It very well might be. A few years ago Rogers had their own location system just like findmymobile, they did take out the native location system on their phone until they decided to discontinue their service and put the option back in.

tried cerberus? pretty good stuff there also
I've had Cerberus for years. But its very easy to get around if you know what it is and what it does. I always used it in tandem with Samsung's security. Samsung has the option to render the power button useless...you cannot turn off the phone unless you remove battery or let the phone drain. Battery removal wise, can't do it with my last 2 phones (s6 and note 5), so if somebody stole my phone I could have easily locked it and used Cerberus to spy on the thief and had a few hours to find him. Now, if anybody steals my phone all he has to do is vol down + home + power until phone turns off and flash with odin, then wipe in recovery. At least with reactivation lock my phone would have been a paper weight

Nexus 6 Stock Android with SuperSu 2.50 root silent mode toggle missing

Hi don't you guys know how to get silent mode quick toggle to show in the quicksettings menu?
Under System UI Tuner in settings it shows up as activated toggle in quick settings, but its not there.
Any tipps?
No one has this issue besides me?
Please 131 views and no answer. Can someone at least tell me how to activate silent mode in android m?
If nothing else use your volume down button until you get it sorted out.

I personally have not had this issue. Did you do a clean install or a dirty install over m preview? Might just be a snafu. Personally I would start off with clean install and see if that resolved it.

No, I didn't do a clean install I dont have the time for it for installing and setting up everything from scratch. So I know it could be the cause but still interesting that there is no way to get silent mode. Useing the voluke buttons gives me only vibra mode. So I thunk no solution, silent mode just disappeared for good

From the screenshot I can see that you have System UI Tuner activated (see the wrench symbol next to the Settings icon?).
Did you mess around with System UI Tuner by any chance?
If so, open Settings > System UI Tuner > Quick settings > Add tile.
Yes systen ui is activated. But i didn't do anything with it, I didnt disabled the dnd/silent fuction. As you can see in the picture below the system ui shows silent mode activeted

Sure that you're running Google's stock ROM?
1. There is no "silent" quick settings tile (and definitely not starting with a small "s" like in your screenshot - the names of all tiles start with a capital letter) in the stock ROM. Instead there is a "Do not disturb" tile.
2. The quick settings background colour in your screenshots is lighter/different from that of Google's stock ROM.
Which ROM did you actually install on your device?

Its a 100% stock rom. I am just useing layers manager and thanks to the native support of rro in android m (and also enabled, not like in lollipop) you can easily theme your phone. It has nothing to do with the toggles. The only slight difference between my rom and stock rom that i am rooted, hence needed a modded kernel, for this i am useing this kernel which is slightly modifed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/kernel-stock-kernel-root-color-control-t3218958

I see. Something must be affecting that tile though - an app, the layers manager, the modified kernel, or something else.

[GUIDE]Hide statusbar icons without root using ADB

I got my P2 some days ago and after initial setup I looked at me statusbar and found it to be cluttered with a lot of icons I don't need. For example I had icons for portrait, bluetooth and worst of all the enormous NFC-icon. So I tried to find an option to disable them and found how to do this using ADB. My Lenovo is on the last Nougat-update.
You need to have ADB working on your PC and have ADB debugging enabled in developer settings on your phone.
Plug your phone into your computer and open command prompt in your ADB folder. Type:
Code:
Code:
adb shell settings put secure icon_blacklist [comma separated codes here]
For example, I disabled the icons for portrait (rotate), traffic meter (speed), Bluetooth (bluetooth), NFC (nfc), alarm(alarm_clock) and vibrate icon (volume).
Code for this example:
Code:
adb shell settings put secure icon_blacklist nfc, bluetooth, speed, rotate, volume, alarm
After you put in the code, hit enter and wait until you see the path for ADB in your prompt screen. Turn on the screen of your P2 and voila! Enjoy your clean statusbar!
Note: Hiding an icon will cause the other icons to re-appear, so you will need to make the command to hide all your iccons with one command. Separate names of the icons with a comma "," and without spaces between them).
You can turn them off manually as well... In settings... Well obviously, they'll be on the status bar when they're on. But then what's the point in not knowing whether they're on or off? Since this method will hide them either way.
Note: just my opinion. This might be useful for someone else. No hard feelings, as always, Good job finding.:good:

I understand your opinion but I have a lot of these things enabled by default (bluetooth for wearable, nfc for mobile payments, Alarms) so my statusbar would be cluttered with icons while I'm well aware they're turned on.
Hello,
I have simplest solution to these just download ShortCuter application.
Enable system ui tuner from menu and (((booom)))
you can now hide unwanted icons from status bar.
Where do I enable the system tuner?

On the P2 you can't simply enable system tuner like you can in other devices (pulling down notification drawer and holding the settings-icon for 4-5 seconds). You can however acces the system tuner by creating a shortcut using an alternative launcher (I used Nova). You can chose to make a shortcut to an activity and choose demo-mode under system.
However, from system tuner you can't toggle all icons, for example NFC....

Really its working for me. Rest its your choice.

Firstly, bootloader must be unlocked before installation. Secondly, it's not only for RKDMIXM version, but also for RKDEUXM.

Yes. Just patch the boot.img via magisk that you can find inside the zip file and flash it via fastboot.
MIUI dialer and SMS or google?
and do it have native call record?
For the people who cant get it to boot/flash use this one to fix
I used windows to flash got error boot_ab not found etc etc
or replace all the _ab with nothing that will work!

Unofficial ROM from xiaomi.eu is a hybrind. It uses China ROM as basic (latest and with more features), remove bloatware, change language, add google and some nice extra, but keep the miui style and there it is.
@Miraculix666
There is no China rom for 11T Pro. That's why the rom from xiaomi.eu is based on Global rom RKD(MI)XM.

Anyone tried playing genshin impact ? Can it run fine on 60 fps? Because in original MIUI rom, genshin impact limited only to run at 40 fps
Also on benchmark apps like antutu and geekbench, can it achieve a "normal" score like other snapdragon 888 phone? In geekbench for example, a "normal" snapdragon 888 without being limited or throttled, cpu single core should exceed 1000 point
Please kindly test it for anyone already using this new miui.eu rom, thanks

Don't think CPU throttle is the problem here, I reached 1115 single core and 3340 multicore even with the latest global rom, my guess is the GPU that is being limited to avoid heat issue.

Oh really? Im on ID (indonesian) ROM, and i never get +1000 point even with cooler attached on geekbench 5, and games like genshin impact is limited to only 40 FPS max, no matter what i do, like putting the phone on refrigerator , turning on performance mode, game turbo set to max every settings, its still limited to 40 FPS max, so i guess xiaomi has some list of apps that they will limit the FPS to avoid overheating issue,,
Can i ask you to play genshin impact and check the FPS ? Does the latest MI (Global) ROM let loose the device performance, meaning there is no limitation on every app? Thanks
So I'm waiting for the unlock counter to go down and figure I want to install this as my first "custom" rom.
However, is it really worth it now that MIUI 13 is around the corner?

I have the same dilemma. I like xiaomi.eu roms, but probably I'll wait for MIUI 13 to do a clean installation, not update from MIUI 12. I will lose my data once, not twice. It's always better to do clean installation when you go to newer Android or newer MIUI.
I've tried the Xiaomi.eu ROM, not much difference to the EEA ROM that I could tell, as its based on the Global ROM and the EEA is based on the Global ROM any OS bugs or performance issues are going to be the same between them all.
