Marshmallow Root and Superuser - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to use cm_ovation-ota-MMB29T.160127.zip (Marshmallow) on my Nook HD Plus. I am having trouble getting root. What Superuser should I be using and how should I install it ?. I am getting root occupied and user not authorized errors. I have tried flashing SuperSu and installing Kingo Root , with no success. Please Help. Thanks.

Nobody????? Really....
Nobody has Marshmallow with root? Nobody has any advice, suggestions or any input at all? Nobody has any links, tutorials or anything? Nobody that knows how to do this ( I have researched this forum and have tried to get this to work before asking for assistance.... So I am making an attempt to do this on my own) can offer me any help? Guys....really?

Been awhile since I did this one, but I see on the card I made UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip. I assume I flashed that to get root access.
I've attached a copy below. I hope it works for you.

oops....delete....

I appreciate the response . I will give it a try next time I try to install Marshmallow. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for that zip...it did the trick! Another question for you...in another post you mentioned (on Marshmallow), that to get WiFi to connect, you turned off, then turned on the display. Did you have to do this each time? I am using Tasker to do this after boot...which works pretty good. Also, the HDMI output is upside down...did you have this also? I am also using Tasker to toggle this when necessary. Thanks again for the response...it saved the day!

My comment about the WiFi was in regard to a Nook Tablet version of CM13. My husband is running CM13 on his HD and I don't recall him complaining about WiFi (which he always has on). On the NT I did always have to wait for the initial lock screen to go dark (or almost dark) before WiFi would connect on its own.
As to the HDMI orientation, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/help/solved-screen-orientation-vs-hdmi-t3701280
After I figured this out my husband asked me to change his back to upside down! You can get used to almost anything.

SuperSU was broken for a little while, but the current installer should install just fine. There are also systemmode installers here on XDA that have the systemless bits removed. Wifi with CM/LN should work, it is AOSP ROMs that have issues.

[Q] Is there an app that will turn on Wifi and Switch

the Network to 2G when you get home. I am having trouble getting phone calls at home with WIFI on and LTE enabled. There is some kind of issue with some phones that seems to send phone calls directly to voicemail when you have bot WIFI and LTE enabled at the same time. I have never used Tasker, would that be possible to set up this way? Do you guys know of any app that will do that automatically. Thanks in advance for help or feedback.

It looks like learning tasker would be my best bet to do what I need. I have been reading up and watching some videos on tasker and it is an amazing tool. A lot to learn but for the simple tasks that I want it sholuld not be to hard to setup. Thanks for the reply
Tasker won't switch your lte on and off with the stock Rom, but it will control WiFi and Bluetooth, and you will be able to set up a location based profile to do it automatically.

Okay, I have been looking over Tasker, it does so much it quickly intimitades new users like me lol. Thanks that answers my question and I appreciate your post.
I had the same problem with Tasker. Even with some of the tutorials, they steps they used must have been for an older version as they didn't even match what I was seeing on the screen.
If you want to try a much simpler interface try out Locale. Its the same concept, but the interface is a LOT easier to understand for newcomers. I have mine set using location to turn on WiFi/off BT/set ringers to 10% volume/check into FourSquare when I get to work, turn on BT/off WiFi/Open Google Listen & GasBuddy when I get in the car and such. Most of the plug-ins you can use with Tasker can also be used with Locale too.
However, I suspect what you are wanting to do would require a plug-in as it is a sort of advanced procedure but maybe if you find some app that will allow turning off 4G, you could at least have it open the app or toggle to turn it on and off as you leave home - if you can't have it happen automatically.

My understanding is that Google, since Jelly Bean, has pulled the API's for turning off radios and GPS (just as they have with battery stats in 4.4) in the interest of more secure devices. So without root, and in some cases something other than the stock rom, programmatical access to these settings is no longer possible.

Okay, that may be part of my trouble no root yet. This is the first phone I have not rooted since coming to android. I probably should have gotten the Dev Moto but I was stubborn and wanted to pick my design:silly:
Tasker should be able to do some of what you need, but as others have mentioned you will at the very least need root to get it working.

On the stock Moto X (XT-1053) you can turn GPS on/off via Tasker without root or using Secure Settings. It was a delight to see this, and not get the GPS nag screens I've previously gotten on a SGS3 (Verizon). Would have to play around, but you might be able to execute an activity or shortcut in Tasker that brings up the settings screen where you can choose 2G data and then script a screen tap in just the right place. Essentially automating the actions you'd take doing it manually. Not as pretty as a direct setting, but Tasker can execute this kind of thing very fast so it's of little bother to see it flash by on your screen.
Not on mine!

Which vendor version of the Moto X are you using? Would be in character for a vendor like Verizon to neuter a useful feature.

T-Mobile. But I see the same behavior on my Nexus devices. As the dialog I posted states, this is an Android imposed limitation.

OK - Just made a task which turns on GPS waits several seconds and turns it off. Verified it was actually on/off when it said it was on. I'm running 4.2.2. My son "upgraded" to 4.4 on his Moto X, and Tasker GPS manipulation doesn't work on his. I didn't root, and verified as much with root checker, so it seems this is an "upgraded" feature in 4.4.
I'd consider rooting, but do like some of the Moto rom features so don't really want to move to an alternate rom & not wild about losing warranty. Maybe a little off topic, but if you root 4.2.2 and latter upgrade to some 4.4.x release, will you end up losing root?

Interesting... My recollection is this was disabled under JB on my Nexus 4. I didn't have 4.2.2 on my Moto X long enough to test.
Can you toggle airplane mode using tasker?
Off topic for here but a quick question. Would this be a good root quide to use. It seems pretty straightforward to understand and do. http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/11/root-motorola-moto-x-running-android-4-4-kitkat/ That site has been around and I think it is reputable but wanted to check.
Dunno, but I am not sure you're gonna be able to toggle LTE even if rooted. At least the description of Secure Settings suggests you can't without a custom rom.
If you turn off mobile data, does that solve your incoming call issue?

All WiFi profiles getting deleted periodically

My phone configuration
AT&T Note 3
Stock firmware, rooted with TowelRoot, few modifications with wanam.
Haven't changed/modified anything system level on phone other than few visual changes with Wanam Xposed
Problem
All the saved wifi profiles are getting deleted. Happened twice in last month. I do not see any reason why it happened. Today, I came to work, it connected to wifi. An hour later I saw that phone disconnected from wifi and was using mobile data. I went to wifi setting to find that all the saved wifi profiles were deleted. (It only showed one saved profile "attwifi" profile which I think is the default comes with the phone). Now I have to save all wifi profiles again for work, home, friends' homes etc.
Solution
This is where you come in the picture.
Has any one of you seen something similar?
Is it a known issue?
Can this be related to Google "Sync App Data"? Is Google syncing empty wifi profiles for some reason?
Do you guys know solution/workaround for this?
(I will update the solution section when there is a solution available, so all future readers don't have to pile through pages of comments to find the right solution)
Bumping
I've been having this issue. It's a PITA!
I am not rooted.
I assume this issue is very rare and only few of us are seeing it. That's why nobody is replying to this thread. A quick google search found a lot of similar forums but no solution
It's not particularly rare- in fact I have a different but similar situation: my phone will not discover new SSID's, thus cannot connect to them.
You'll find this website isn't always helpful; this thread has had hundreds of views, yet no responses.
Tis just tough luck
I have this problem too. Not only losing l the Wifi but also all my personal settings, such as sounds in unlocking, typing etc. Drives. Me mad

Mine does the exact same thing as yours. Every couple of weeks or so all of my wifi networks just disappear. I've tried googling with no success. I just can't seem to find an answer either. I even have general/backup and reset/backup my data unchecked. My Note3 did this both when I was unrooted and now that I am rooted. It is a real pain.
Well, lets hope that someone will have a fix for that in the future. The WiFi profiles are getting wiped like once a month so its not very annoying but I hope it doesn't wipe my SD card or my personal data.
I have unchecked the Google backup for now, lets see if it fixes the issue.
@K-Alzwayed has a great thread going with a bunch of fixes it looks like #2 in his thread might fix this, you might want to check it out and see if that works for you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2793441
For a workaround (needs root), try saving a copy of the wifi configuration file and then the next time you lose your settings overwrite the file with the backup version
Code:
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf

[Q] Root and ANT+ chip [solved]

Hi all,
I used to use the ANT+ chip on my Z3C in order to Sync my Garmin Swimm watch with it. For this, I am using ST uploader from Market.
Since I have rooted it, I can't fet it working. I have asked the dev for more info and I sent him the debug log. I am waiting for his feedback.
However, in the meantime I would like to know if anyone noticed this? Or if anyone has a working / not working ANT+ chip one the rooted Z3C.
Finally, I have installed the same ANT+ services from Market that I had before root.. nothing helped.
Thanks a lot for your feebacks.
Edit : Problem is solved. I actually feel very stupid since I totally forgot to tick a box in the application settings in order to enable the native ANT+ chip. It now works as it should. Thanks a lot to everyone for your help and sorry for the loss of time.
you should unroot your phone(restore first your TA partition if you in any way tampered with it) and then try again and see if it works

What process did you follow to root? You have lost something essential, as simply having root won't impact anything running on the phone.
Agree. If you did not unlocked the bootloader, but only rooted, then it should work. Unless these apps detect root and refuse to work (some apps behave like this).
Thanks for the replies.
I followed this guide here. I'll give another go, and restart from scratch. You indeed, confirmed what I thought : it shouldn't behave such as.
I'll keep you posted (probably tomorrow).

Could you please let me know where in the Mobile settings you enabled the chip? I cannot connect to my hear rate monitor although my mobile is not rooted. Thanks!

Flashing OTA issues

So I bought a Nexus 6 on Amazon when they were on sale. I used wugfresh NRT and unlocked it, rooted it (no custom recovery) and then updated the files for tethering. Its activated on Verizon if that matters-
I got an update today, I was running LMY48I and I choose the file to update to LMY48M. I used the NRT and sideloaded it, and after I was done it still shows I have LMY48I, and a few hours later the OTA shows up at in my notifications again.
What am I doing wrong?

what are you doing wrong? oh, thats an easy one..! you havent done any research into the phone that you are using. i bet you probably used a toolkit to root it as well. anyways, for the 20 billionth time ill repeat it. you can not take an ota if you are not completely, 100% stock. and root is not stock. on top if that, many completely stock nexus 6 cant take updates as well, if any system files have changed.

Your help is awful, condescending and rude. Maybe its the effect of the internet, but that is how it sounds. I did root using a toolkit- and I used the same toolkit to sideload the OTA. I assumed that I could do that since that is what the 40 threads I read about told me to do. I have a job and a wife and kids, I don't have the time to be a full time developer for my phone just to enjoy it. ALL I needed root for, was to enable tethering- otherwise I'm happy with stock android.
I will take one thing from what you did write and assume that because I edited the build.prop to enable tethering I will not be able to sideload OTA's either? IF I can't, thats fine with me- Can you tell me how to disable the OTAs?
Anyone else know how to read a question and offer an answer without insults?
I did find out how to hide the OTA notification- it was so easy I feel dumb- but not having used a 5.x android before this one I couldn't have known it.

But his answer is 100% correct. If you change any system file cannot OTA. Don't kill the messenger. No OTA with root, Kernel, change build.prop. Or custom recovery. If change any file no OTA.

i apologize, i was a little ruder than i meant to be. but not much, just a little. and i bet that you didnt learn much about the rooting process using the toolkit? anyways, before ever even rooting the phone, you have to do some research about it. or you wouldnt be asking such a basic question. heck, search can a rooted nexus 6 take an ota on google. one search, its all it really needs to take. anyways, it doesnt matter that you have a job, a wife, kids, this applies to everyone, do some research. im not a youngster myself, lol.
Obviously you read only the first sentences of everything I write... its Ok I notice you are from Brooklyn- I can forgive you for not using southern manners that I am accustomed to. I am not trying to take an OTA- I was trying to sideload it using ADB. I know I can't take it normally.
I'm currently downloading the system.img from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
I'm going to try and flash just the system.img and cache.img so I can update to the newest version without going back to stock.
I also found out how to hide the OTA update

As someone with a job, a wife and kid and I can assure you, nothing is more frustrating than to do the research after something happened, phone not working while waiting for calls or whatever other inconvenience.
What simms22 tried to convey is "know thy phone".
If you look for how to "root your nexus" you'll see how simple the pRocess is and you might feel better using the tools needed, rather than trusting some obscure tool that could always come with even more payloads.
Simms22 is someone who helped hundreds after they got themselves stuck after using root kits, his frustration I think lies more in the continued pushing of root tool kits for phones that don't need it.
The tone you took personal was directed at the root kits, at them being allowed, as they create just as much problems as they promise to fix.
Know thy Nexus, it's really a great thing.
Sorry if the reply is maybe a little long, must be all this not posting in a while

Well, Hopefully I didn't mess things up using the toolkit instead of doing it the other ways: I know its not much harder to do it other ways, I'm just pressed for time. A few things about my situation:
I live in the country of Texas where I don't have ANY internet service providers. I have however, an old unlimited data plan from Verizon and a pretty good signal strength that I've boosted with a custom built amplifier (we also have metal roof that blocks a lot of signal otherwise)
I NEED internet so I don't become a savage. My phone tethering the internet is my PRIMARY way of having internet. Its very important that I can tether my unlimited plan...
After flashing the system.img and the radio img it booted back up no problems and I had lost root- I re-rooted it and changed the build.prop to allow tethering.
However- I dun F&*ked up somewhere, because now I can't seem to get LTE and my service is terribad. I'm assuming it was flashing the radios? Maybe because its verizon crap I need to do something else...
This has been a 5 hour ordeal (I watched tv during it all...) but now my phone doesn't quite do what i need it to do.

Last night before bed, the phone appeared to be working fine: it was tethering and data was working. This morning I find that I can't call out or receive calls. I tried lots of things to fix this: none worked. Any ideas?

have you tried a reboot?
Yes, and I tried a few other things. Right now, I've factory reset the device and I will re-root it and change build.prop I was trying to NOT have to do that. Right now its back to stock and not rooted... but it makes calls and is updated to the 48M build.
I was trying to enable VOLTE and HD calling which appears to be what messed it up probably (although flashing radios might have done it... )
I used the *#*#4636#*#* to check it and it was all sorts of messed up and not connecting to any towers. I'm in my classroom lab and it was making all the speakers go crazy... something was badly messed up
Mine did it last night. I had to wipe dalvik and cache in TWRP to get it back. Has happened occasionally since 5.0. The one I call can hear me. I don't hear them or the phone ringing. Completely dead on my end. VOLTE was disabled in settings.

You keep referencing that you found how to disable the ota notification - do tell. This would help.

When the notification appears, long press it in your drop down status bar. Then click "app info", then untick the box for " show notifications ".

Wireless Tether

I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?
I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?
Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

Heh, ok. I've got their UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT 2GB plan 75$ and it incudes hotspot/tethering.
Anyone care to share what to edit to get WiFi tethering? Flashing a different ROM is not really what I wanna do right now, would like to just do it on my newly unlocked stock rom Turbo

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.
Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.
Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

+1 for xTether. It works great for me. I used it all day to play on my tablet while the wife was Black Friday shopping.

I did this and am having no luck
So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.
Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?
It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.
Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)
