Hi,
I bought my note 8 directly from Sammy and was wondering if rooting will effect my plan.
My plan is a little over 30 pounds a month and after two years the phone becomes mine but after one year I can return this phone and get a note 9 but I am not sure if I still can swap this note 8 for a note 9 after I break Knox and root it.
Does anyone know if I can root and not get in trouble when swapping phones ?

Good question, I'm on the Samsung upgrade plan also but in USA.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Bump.
Ease of someone knows how this works then please let us know.
If you have to specifically pay through samsung pay then you cant root as samsung pay will no longer work
I am not talking about Samsung pay the app.
I am talking about the phone.
Bump! Rooting phone will not affect upgrade plan... Just un-root it before change it with ur service provider... or re-install stock rom before swap. Selling phone on the other hand wouldn't be fair to those who using Samsung Pay or other NFC payed options... But that is not the issue for ur quest..., just saying...
Jess no one understands what I am trying to say ?
I bought the phone from Samsung and have to pay them around 30 pounds a month.
This phone did not come from a service provider...
Just flashing stock ain't gonna fool Samsung when the phone is returned as there is something called Knox.
But forget my question as I already rooted and flashed custom Rom.

I didn't see anything in the ToS about rooting, mostly about damage, maybe it does come under damage though as Knox is an e-Fuse that's destroyed upon flashing custom recovery..
However I don't think they care that much as it's a simple fix for them. I guess no one knows for sure though unless they've done it themselves. maybe ask on the S8 forum incase someone who had the S8 on the upgrade program rooted & then upgraded to Note 8. (if you still would like to know)
My verdict is I don't think it matters... However I've not flashed mine

Thanks for the reply.
Someone in my family had her Galaxy S9 stolen. She reported it to Verizon and they had the EMEI blacklisted with all carriers.
But how permanently attached is the EMEI number, can't you just wipe it/hack it?
How sophisticated does a thief have to be to circumvent it and make it work on a carrier again?
FYI: I am not asking anything about how to "get around a blacklisted EMEI" number nor do I want to hear about a single way of doing so.
I simply wanted to ask if blacklisting the EMEI is very effective against a phone thief?
We had a brand new S9 stolen, and reported it to Verizon, but they are just general customer service. So their claim that it can't be used by anyone in the US doesn't really mean much to me

It can be done. We don't necessarily allow discussion of how to do it here for obvious reasons, but the guy would have to be fairly competent on a computer to go in and do that.
More than likely he'll sell it really cheap to someone or a shady outfit that does know how to do it.

Unfortunately yes. That is one thing iOS has over Android, I don't think it's possible to reprgoram an IMEI on an iPhone, so once it iCloud locks it really is a brick.
I still prefer Android though because of other pros.

Interesting, didn't know that. Android manufactures should follow suit to reduce phone thefts.
Maybe it would have been better to NOT blacklist the EMEI when it's stolen, so that the thief or buyer activates it. Then report it like a month later to track who has it at the time.
If it's been sold, the police could work backwards from the for sale listing or emails with the buyer (Craigslist for example). Kinda elaborate though.....

Yeah well it's not on the manufacturers really, I think it's just a limitation of AOSP and the way android works. Even KNOX can't prevent it or even working around FRP (which I had to do not too long ago for a legitimate forgotten password).
But yeah I think those types of thefts are probably too low importance for the cyber crime division to go thru those types of hoops. The only real possibility would have been to try to track the phone when turned back on, or put one of those invisible self installing tracker type apps in the SD card.
End of the day if you lose or phone or it gets stolen, you're pretty much SOL.

"self installing tracker type apps in the SD card." Didn't know that existed. Will look into that.
Hi,
Last night my Note 8 was stolen. I had it tracked and locked using Google but I believe the guy removed the sim or it died after noticing me locking it. I went on to erase the data on Googles "Find your Android".
So my Q is, can the thief just reflash the software and use the phone? Is there anything preventing this from happening?
He can't. When he reflashes the phone it will ask for the last Google account connected to the phone. Without that login the phone is useless
its the worst thing, even if he cant use the phone, he can still sell battery, camera, speakers, screen anything with hardware except motherboard. whatever you do, if you have an expensive phone keep it with you even when you are going to sleep

so the thief could technically speaking buy a broken phone and use the motherboard from that and have a cheap phone?
at least the original poster had the sense to erase everything via the Google account.
Make sure you report the theft to appropriate authorities so that the emei will be blacklisted/blocked.
Report the imei as stole.
Problem is with carriers even if blocked will work in some other countries eg here in UK wen a phone stolen and emei blocked can b used in Africa and States, don't make sence to me

no thats not it, even if imei is blocked, he can pry back glass cover and take small HW devices like fingerprint, nfc, cameras, speakers, battery, and many pieces that connects to the mother board. he wont be able to use motherboard otherwise he will be caught as soon as he turns on the device(imei).
point is stealing a phone for using yourself is a silly idea, you can make profit from HW pieces cause you dont pay for anything, its like stealing cars. you dont find the car but when police finds it in scrapyard by looking at chasis number, you will see the car as naked. this is like it
You can report the IMEI as stolen here http://imeipro.info/report-stolen-lost-phone.html
In this way, you make sure that they won't be able to use it with any other network.

You are right to be cautious and not disclose your IMEI. And a lot more users should do the same.
However, as your phone is stolen, at the moment, you will need to report it, so the only thing to do is register the IMEI with a service that updates the Blacklist database.
You don't need to use the first IMEI reporting service, just check any service you find trustworthy.
frp lock would prevent the thief activating the phone. unfortunately there are ways to bypass this.

Op asked what to do now that his note 8 has been stolen, the only choices are:
Lock/erase itwith google
Lock it with samsung find my mobile
Report the imei to carrier/vendor
Report to authority
And that is pretty much it, worrying about what the thief will do, is useless, just accept your loss and go on, feel sorry for you, anybody can be robbed, it has happened 2 times to me, a SE xperia S, and a Note 4

Like Mr. Orange 645 said its not allowed to discuss that here.
My Note 8 was dropped out of the car in front of a restaurant. The person who found it took it home with him/her (I know this because I tracked it). The police said they don't visit peoples homes anymore because the tracking isn't always 100% accurate. I reported the phone stolen to my carrier, erased all of the data via Samsung's website, and the only thing that concerns me is the photo's and documents that were kept on the SD card. Certainly sucks. I'm devastated over this.

Well, I've found by some luck this webpage https://www.theandroidsoul.com/psa-...i-and-honor-devices-again-for-a-limited-time/
and by using this link (which is in the article) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc-9aGLywzV2I4wnuExrgvzrgd3J4rePj95vhMw_aSLDGI9ow/viewform
You can ask for the bootloader unlock code. Perhaps.
I've written there today and will update when, or if I get my own unlock code.
Thanks for this info !
Just filled and sent the form. Fingers crossed !
Be careful to what form you send your IMEI number to, since IMEI number shall not land into wrong hands. If some 1 made this form just so they can get your IMEI number then you won't be happy, they can do anything with it. All from claiming the phone is stolen so it becomes banned to all carrier networks around earth and much more. So never fill out custom forms that does not come from manufacture themselves.
Is this function ?

I'd be happy to get my first IMEI banned, since I'm using only single SIM which can be put into the second slot, if it gets the phone unlocked. I'm sitting here for two months looking for ways to get the phone unlocked and since the dc-unlocker, octoplus and anyone else can still do sh*t with the phone, this might just be the way... I dont' know if it is someone who works at huawei and have the generator or whatever... But I'd like to believe that.
i try and am waiting

i dont think it works like that, it's true that we have 2 imei, one for each sim, but they're linked. blocking the main imei will block the 2nd too.

You guys know thats only for Honor right?
Honor USA, took a leap of faith in the xda community and they will be unlocking bootloaders again for a limited time only for XDA.
Not Huawei, only HONOR.

They are not linked. A carrier is only given a block of IMEIs from a manufacturer, which is provided by CTIA. Two in the block go to your phone. If your primary IMEI is duplicated, there is no way to link that to 2nd from the network side.
I also sent my info, hope doesn't get in the wrong way In the article say that's for both Huawei and Honor. Regards!
don't send your IMEI in to a site like that.
In other news Honor is going to allow some bootloaders to be unlocked for a small period of time, apparently the pre-requisites are to have an XDA account.
First come first server.
Huawei hasn't done the same but it's good news and the first signs of any kind of backtrack until now.
ontopic: I wouldn't put my IMEI anywhere but to my insurers.
But your call.
EDIT: Actually i believe this is an incorrect article, Honor are going to be allowing some

They are officially separated so much, that even bootloader unlock code generators are not the same? Since (at least I believe so), they produce the phones in same factories and the phones have similar specs, these "two" companies are both under the Huawei.
Still I'd like to believe they will send the code, or at least provide some information about it.
And by the way, don't you know, why did they all of sudden started to giveaway codes? Could it be provided from Huawei aswell?
I don't know if it this, that some individual from XDA convinced someone from Honor to giveaway codes, or if it's some kind of Honor's initiative.
i spoke to huawei and they confirm that this form/link is not official by them. If they going to allow temporarly unlock of bootloader again then it will be a form through their own website and never through a google form.
So simply some private person made this form just to get peoples IMEI. Which is really risky.
Secondly Honor is Huawei's their daughter company or w.e you call it, so if Honor is going to allow limited time of bootloader unlock then they will probably provide a official form through their website and not through google form. Unless it's being linked from honor's website itself to a google form then it's official.

Since the news broke that Huawei and it's sister honor were to stop giving these codes away and essentially turn our nice devices into apples which are locked down a lot of people all over the world have shown their obvious mood to this decision and XDA has been key in those discussions, I'm not sure if this is the reason for the sudden change in heart but i would like to think so.
XDA and it's users who love a tinker and have done so much for the android world should be listened to in all honesty.
My guess is that huawei is allowing honor first on a temp basis until they see the reaction and then huawei may or may not follow suit.
Personally i think the numbers will be quite low so i dont believe huawei will commit to allowing people to unlock their phones.
Such a shame.
this needs to be bumpoed i stumbled across this thank you lord for this woot woot

It is absolutely legit. If you spoke to Huawei, then you almost certainly spoke to their l1 support, who are notoriously useless and totally uninformed.
It is for Honor devices only though. It was publicised here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho.../honor-bootloader-unlocking-limited-t3837880/
The original process before they stopped it was also the very same Google form.

They can still be telling truth, it would be redicolous for a manufacture to use a google form to allow temp unlocks, when they used official website page of theirs before for official unlocks.

I recently bought a used Note 8, the previous owner sold it as "failed motherboard, for parts". Its a N9500 Hong Kong version with Snapdragon chipset with this CSC: N9500ZHS4CRK1_N9500ZZH4CRK1_TGY
The phone turns on but boot-loops. Sometimes it gets into Android and when it does all SYSTEM apps "keep closing" such as Play Store, Google, Camera, Settings, everything, I can't even remember all their names. All apps keep closing. After massive app closure, the phone enters boot-loop again.
So obviously, I entered recovery mode, wiped cache, wiped factory data, there are no accounts on this phone and it is NOT FRP locked. After wiped, the phone behaves exactly the same and it took a lot of bootloops to get through the welcome configuration screen, next next bootloop, next next skip next bootloop and so on.
I then opened up the phone (which was never opened before) because I suspected a faulty battery, I wasted more money on purchasing a new battery, I replaced the battery but it behaves exactly the same.
I then reflashed the same N9500ZHS4CRK1_N9500ZZH4CRK1_TGY soft in ODIN which was downloaded from sammobile.com and guess what, it behaves the same.
I reflashed a newer version N9500ZHS4CRL1_N9500ZZH4CRL1_TGY in ODIN but again it behaves the same.
Now in recovery mode I just recently noticed this:
#fail top open recovery_cause(No such file or directory)#
#Reboot Recovery_Cause is [UNKNOWN]#
No Support SINGLE-SKU
File-Based OTA
Support API: 3
dm-verity verification failed...
After researching what this error means I discovered that it may have something to do with phone rooting!? Now since this phone wasn't mine I have no idea what the previous owner did to it so I entered download mode again to see the status of KNOX and guess what, it says:
RPMB fuse blown
RPMB PROVISIONED
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
FRP LOCK: OFF
CROM SERVICE: ON
WARRANTY VOID: 0x0
QUALCOMM SECUREboot: ENABLE
RP SWREV: B4(2,1,1,1,1) K1 S1
SECURE DOWNLOAD: ENABLE
DID: 205EE0EE92FD
So WARRANTY VOID: 0x0 as far as I know means that everything is official? I don't know if you can actually root the phone without triggering Knox which should then read 0x1
I also find this RPMB fuse blown suspicious which I have no idea what it means.
So can anyone help me??? Is my problem just software? What can I do??? Or is the motherboard simply dead and gone and requires replacement? Motherboards for Note 8 are extremely expensive so I hope the motherboard isn't dead.......
All the best
As far as i understand, ur problem should be software only.... Try flashing twrp in download mode and then root and then custom ROM....all this if the phone is out of warranty. And i hope oem unlock is toggled.... Knox 0x0 means not rooted previously.....try it out and share what happened

Is there no other way? I would prefer not to root my phone and install custom ROM, I would prefer to have an official ROM... also if it has everything stock, official, why is it doing this? Why is it bootlooping? Anyway if there is no other way then please provide me with a perfectly functional custom ROM which I should install. I need to mention that my phone is DUOS (DUAL SIM) if that matters. The phone doesn't have any warranty, like I said I bought it used, second hand. Additionally its from Hong Kong while Im from Europe and the previous owner told me that Samsung told him that they won't fix his phone because its from another region... BS if you ask me but whatever! Additionally to make things worse, like I said I disassembled it to replace its battery so definitely no warranty here.
I will return and keep you updated, no worries. Thank you very much for your help!
Best way to find out is to flash the firmware specific to ur device.... Try the pie firmware.... And make sure its specific to ur device.... Maybe try a diff csc.... Also flash bootloader separately and then try to boot...i had the same problem once with an older device... That helped... Make sure u know what u e doing before going for anything.... I have read your post and have no solution. My guess is your flash memory is bad, and you can't fix that.
Your best bet is to probably buy a working Note 9 with a broken screen for cheap. Swap motherboards. The back glass should have the IMEI on it, so keep the right back glass with the right motherboard.
Put both phones back together. Keep the working one, and sell the other one for parts.

Jesus Christ Samsung is becoming the worst brand in the world. First exploding Note 7 then Note 8 with flash memory fails. I think I this is my last Samsung EVER. My next phone will definitely be Nokia 9. I didn't had the chance to test Nokia out since they relaunched with Android and they seem like really well built phones.
Anyway until then, soyuz4u seems to have a solution for me so I will like to try out what he is proposing before giving up.

EVERY company has some faulty devices. It's electronics. They fail. My guess is the failure rate of the flash memory (if that's what it actually is), is minute. Just because YOUR decide failed doesn't mean Samsung as a whole is a bad company or make bad devices. You bought a device that you knew was out of warranty and had previous problems without knowing the history of it. To be blunt, that's your fault, not Samsung's.
Honestly, they handled the Note 7 issue as well as could be expected. They did everything they could to fix it and then finally issue refunds and incentives to owners.
But I'm sure Nokia has NEVER had a warranty claim on any device they've sold ever, so it may be a good switch for you.
Exactly. Plus OP bought a device being sold as "for parts" only, so it doesn't make sense to complain about Samsung as a whole
Guys guys this is going off the rails and totally off-topic! Anyone is entitled to their opinions, its freedom of speech, I perfectly understand this and respect your opinions just as you guys love Samsung, I have a few words of criticism for it but now please no more off-topic messages.
As a response to what you guys are saying,
1 - Why don't you come with an actual solution to the problem instead of talking about how great Samsung is? Why do you have to reply to my bottom message where I criticized Samsung but not to the first message where I ask for a solution?
and 2 - Does any of you own shares at Samsung? I've never been a brand fanboy, why would I defend a multi-trillion foreign corporation?? What would I have to gain out of it? Im not Korean, it doesn't benefit my economy, if anything it harms my economy, as they suck billions of euros out of my country. yearly You guys are too forgiving and forgetting about the people who actually got injured by Note 7. You forgot about the infamous Note 4 and Note Edge "mmc_read fail" mass failures which also happened with S6 and S6 Edge. Millions of customers got scammed by Samsung back then. Samsung even got fined 5 million Euros in Italy because of Note 4 mass fails. There are even class action law-suits regarding Note 4.
It doesn't matter I got this Note 8 used, as is. What about the previous owner? Does it make it ok to fail in his hands? Why fail in the first place? Why would a top 1000 Euro phone become "for parts" in the first place in only a year after production?? What if I bought it new and failed in my hands?? The logic you are applying here makes no sense. I can understand this for a 100-150 Euro phone but not 1000 Euro! 1000 Euros are a lot of money, with 1000 Euros you can buy a decent car, a Renault Megane 2006-2007 for example which will last you many many years so spending 1000 Euros on a phone to fail after just 1 year is ok? Anyway please please no more off-topic. All I said is that I don't think I like Samsung anymore and you fanboys came at me like lions defending Samsung which is a thing I can't stand. I don't hate Samsung, if I did, I wouldn't have bought this Note 8 but Im not a fanboy and I will never be a fanboy for any corporation in this world, unless I just work for them and its my job.
Now please lets get back on topic, does anyone know how to fix this phone?

Wow. Ok, for one YOU started the off-topic conversation. Two, I'm not a brand fanboy or a share holder, nor was I defending Samaung. I have owned just about every single brand of smartphone made. I was explaining you were the one who bought a "for parts only" device then complained that it doesn't work and is out of warranty. Those are the risks you took buying it. For all you know, it wasn't a manufacturer defect, but physical damage from the previous owner. Third, I did offer a solution. Buy a working Note 8 with a broken screen and swap motherboards, then sell the other one for parts. I've done it many times on other phones.
Good luck!

I didn't start anything, all I said is that I do not like Samsung anymore and its my business what I like and don't like and I don't want anyone to convince me otherwise. I can't believe a 1000 Euro phone fails irreparably! Of course I didn't pay 1000 but the guy who I got it from did and the principle itself is what pisses me off. What if I would have been in his shoes bought it new paid 1000 then total fail and unable to fix it just after 1 year!? If this was 1 in 1 million cases, ohh ok, tough luck what can I say? But this is actually extremely common with Samsung nowadays. It all started with Note 4. Note 4 was the first major Samsung disaster. Note 3 was a jewel of Samsung, the best Note ever produced. I not once seen a Note 3 with failed board even to this day after years of use, anyway avoiding more off-topic talk, I am aware about replacing the motherboard, I even mentioned it in my first post, even the title of the thread is "hardware or software" fault. This is from the bottom of my first post "So can anyone help me??? Is my problem just software? What can I do??? Or is the motherboard simply dead and gone and requires replacement? Motherboards for Note 8 are extremely expensive so I hope the motherboard isn't dead......."
Also the phone does not have any kind of physical damage whatsoever, it doesn't even have water damage, like I said in my first post, I disassembled the phone to replace its battery and it was sealed, never opened before, clean and no nicks and dents on its frame. Its like brand new.

Let me explain this:
You started a thread asking if your issue was hardware or software. You got some ideas and suggestions from people, including me. That's all ON TOPIC.
Then YOU went off on a tangent about how crappy Samsung was, brought up the Note 7, and talked about getting a Nokia because they look high quality. That's all OFF TOPIC.
You started the off topic conversation, so I replied to it. You don't get to go off topic, give your opinion, then get mad at others for going off topic WITH YOU and say you don't want people to try to change your mind.
Again, you bought a broken phone. We told you what could possibly be wrong with it. Your opinions of Samsung's quality control had nothing to do with it. You're the one who steered the thread off course, not me.
By the way, your last comment was all entirely off topic. This thread isn't about the Note 4 or Note 3 or the cost of the Note 8. Please try to stay on topic from now on. Thank you.

Not worth arguing with some people bro because sometimes no matter what you say, it just doesn't register and they can't accept any other outcome or information except for what they've already settled on in their head..
Now, can I get some help with this phone that was sold for parts only? I swear it must be just a software problem, now you just give me the freaking answer that'll fix this parts only thing!!! J/K hahaha..

Ok its my fault for daring to criticize Samsung! You're acting as if I have something against the seller, no, wrong! VERY WRONG! I know the seller, he's a friend of mine, not a close friend but still a friend. He was awesome and I feel bad for him and what happened to his former phone.
Now let's get back on topic and please kindly ALL of you who have no clue how to deal with this error, LEAVE THE THREAD and stop spamming it with your useless posts! You clearly have no idea how to fix this yet you waste time in this thread... You said you offered help? What help? You clearly have no idea, I already said in my first post that I know how to swap boards but I would prefer to fix this board if possible.
I'm not gonna reply to any more Samsung fanboys regardless of what you have to say. You have an actual software solution to this board? Please kindly share it, otherwise, just go and don't come back. The only one who came up with actual solutions was soyuz4u. Everyone else just time wasters!
Have a nice day.

I don't care that you criticized Samsung. I truly don't. I'm not a fan boy. As soon as someone makes a better phone than the Note 9, I'm on it, no matter the brand.
I'm not blaming you for criticizing Samsung. I'm blaming you for going off topic and then getting triggered when someone replied to YOUR comment. I didn't go off topic. You're the OP, so you set the topic. You took the thread in a new direction, so I followed along, because I thought I was having a conversation with another adult.
And no one is blaming the seller. I actually never said anything about him. I was actually blaming you. You bought a broken phone, for parts, out of warranty. You don't like any of our answers or solutions, and you just want to blame Samsung for you buying a broken phone that you don't know the history of.
Instead of getting mad and offended by everything, take some responsibility.

You are the one gone off-topic. You lost focus on your own issue. And the way you DEMAND for a solution makes you look like a 5 year old child. Behave man. Be a little, just a little more coherent. If you are further past "fanboys" then don't say a word to/about them. If you are so clever, you'd be owning a multi-millionaire company in stead of buying a faulty device.
On the other hand, you should be thankful that at least someone gave you solutions to try out considering your manners.
I've owned multiple Samsung's over the past years, and Apple's devices too, between other brands. Actually I'm rocking a Note 8 since 3 months past launch day, coming from an iPhone X 256gb first hand bought in Spain that 2 months after using it the touchpad stopped working (yes, a $1200 EUR touch device stopped recognizing touches, can happen), never insulted anyone because of that, just my freaking luck. Got it repaired for free btw, but still wanted to own a Note 8.
I upgraded to Pie 2 days ago, I live in Argentina, dunno why it took this long, but nonetheless its an awesome device, never failed me nor stopped surprising me (I found early this morning the 60fps 4k UHD workarround with the awesome "lgcamera" app), and technical service is great here.
I hope you can chill, and be responsible for your own mistakes, without mistreating people who tries to help you. This is a very nice place to spend time learning and asking, let's keep it like this. I also wish you good luck on your quest to make that faulty Note 8 work again, so you can enjoy this great device's features, and if not, I hope you get yourself one that suits you.
