Does the Samsung Video Player have hardware acceleration? It's the only explanation I can come up with because it can play 720P MP4 videos just fine, whereas video players from the Market can't. Plus, it seems that the battery life is much better if I use the Samsung Video Player to watch videos whenever possible.

Yes. There are several players from the market that can also use hardware acceleration (ie. RockPlayer, mVideoPlayer), but they can only do so with formats that the stock video player supports. If the phone doesn't support hardware playback of a certain format using the stock player, then you have to use a software playback with RockPlayer, QQplayer, vPlayer, etc. (which is very suboptimal for high-res video in terms of quality and performance).
Yes it does due to the framework that samsung uses. Thus video deciding is done by the gpu rather than cpu.
As long as the 3rd party video player you choose can use the default codecs, it will have the same performance as samsungs video player. However most are based on ffmpeg decoders.
If you plan to use a non samsung based rom. The open codecs will use ffmpeg decoder which will do processing via cpu.

ohh nice to know...
Hi
Is it possible to watch stream videos (not flash, by http stream) by default player?
(it uses HW acceleration)
For now when I click on link I have option by which program I want to open link (default video player, vplayer)
If I open link with VPlayer it starts to play, but didn't use HW acceleration (so no 720p+ videos)
If I choose default player it opens player and return to browser
Maybe some player in Market with Galaxy Tab support or any posibility to watch http-streams by default player?
Thanks!
I'm owner of the SGS2 and i want to replace my phone with NOTE, but only if video playback with "crop zoom mode" is supported (it isn't is SGS2, so it's uselles for watching full HD films ).
Please test some video file (divx or mkv downloaded from web) in STOCK VIDEO PLAYER (this is important, because stock player use hw acceleration only) and try zoom modes.
SGS2 have only "stretch zoom mode" with HW acceleration, i'm affraid that NOTE will have the same issue..
Just tried it out, didnt see a crop zoom option. Only options I saw was normal, stretch and fit to screen.
Doesnt MX video use HW acceleration? I use it and dont have any problems playing HD videos.

Yeah I was just about to say, just use MX video. It's better in many ways really.
MX video player have support for HW acceleration... But if you can't use crop zoom mode in stock player, it will not work in any other player (yes it will work with SW acceleration, but try to play 1080p in SW mode). This is driver related, just try it and you will see...
Thanks for the test anyway.

Which format you are trying to Play.. ?
Share link .. i ll try in my Note..
is this a video you have encoded yourself or one you have downloaded?
It's a video i copy from my friend (Ice Age2), dont know if he rip it himeself, format mkv. It play perfectly fine on his mac and his Iphone4(lag). My flv file from "Digital Tutors - Creating Stylized Female Character Concepts in Photoshop CS5" dont have sound and cant render in hardware more either (mx video player). I think its the software render problem cuz I just down and watch VS show on my phone just fine ( no sound when switch to software mode)
The standard Videos app on the note doesn't do DTS-encoded audio. Could be your problem?
I followed NZTechFreak's advice from his reviews of the Note and got DICE player off the market - plays everything I've thrown at it and does hardware decode for almost everything as well. Also decodes DTS sound. For some reason seems to use software decode for wmv files though, where the stock app will use hardware for those as well.
Dice player work .
HI,
Is there a way to play divx/xvid natively with the stock gallery app, by modifying or installing a new kernel.
I'm not looking for an alternate video player! I want to be able to see panorama and plays video directly trough the gallery stock app
