I think because your phone is encrypted. The way the decryption is to format it in twrp. Wipe > Format Data then type yes.
Backup all files before the data format.

Noo, you have to just do it once and if you want to flash Oreo ROMs, use Oreo twrp. You need not format the data then.
What I noticed is that its showing up as 0mb because the device is still encrypted. In order to fix this boot up into the OS. Set a screen lock PIN or password. Make sure you save it as requiring password on startup. Then bootup into TWRP and it should ask you for your password to decrypt. Put in the correct password and your files should show up again.
Note : Got this answer also from @morphixxp

Then, downgrade to 3.0 by cofface, wipe your phone, upgrade to redwolf or twrp 3.x.
Another one, what version of redwolf are you using? I suggest using the one that teamghost made. Its on their worldgiz.com

Tell. Me exactly what u did..
Try : default_password if this doesn't work.. Then m sorry my friend u have to format full data..
Its asking for the encryption password. The default password is "default_password" (without the quotes) try that. And if doesn't work then enter Bootloader (fastboot mode) and enter the following commands into CMD.
Code:
fastboot format userdata
Code:
fastboot format cache
Code:
fastboot reboot
This will unencrypt your phone and you'll be able to boot/enter TWRP normally.
Please do note that you'll lose ALL of your data from the commands.
Also, I'm not sure about this but you also might need to flash TWRP again.

How is this possible?
Firstly, if u cannot enter into TWRP, then how did you flash the ROM?
Secondly, even if you somehow flashed the ROM how does it do away the password error ?? Did it replace the recovery? Recovery image is not usually included in custom ROMs.

I was running out of options. i thought why don't i flash the last rom that was running on this device. i can't explain how or why. I flashed the twrp again and than the rom. i can't explain but it installed the rom. It worked.
So you froobs can't read the dm-verity warning on TWRP page and just flash the one damn zip that prevents from this.
And the problem is in Kernel and firmware
I had trust in XDA-members. But the faith is gone.

Wait, were you able to get past the twrp password thing without formatting just by flashing the rom? Why did you have to flash twrp again before the rom? Did you do a clean flash or dirty flash? Your internal drive was not wiped?
My problem is basically that I was unable to get into my phone so I deleted the 5 gatekeeper/lockscreen keys from data/system. Now I can only see the wallpaper and a blank screen that doesn't allow me to do anything. It doesn't let me allow me to set a new pin. TWRP is asking me for a password that I never set. I've been trying to figure out how to access my data without formatting, but I'm running out of options too..

Maybe he used SuperSu to root? I dont' see a dm-verity zip for that. You have to use the bluspark TWRP posted above this reply and set your password in the ROM through another app or through the system settings in that case. I had the same problem. Also, I could have used "default_password" but I didn't know that until after I did all the fastboot flashing...
Or do you know of another zip SuperSu users can flash?
The password which its asking for is the one which is our lockscreen password
OxygenOS encryptes our devices with the password we enter on lockscreen so to decrypt just enter the same password

Your data from the last install appears to be encrypted. If you have a backup the easiest way to resolve the issue is to format your storage. You could also use the All in One tool and use its encryption removal option. Please keep in mind that it will wipe out all of your memes, so hopefully those are backed up.

I mean, i formatted to have a custom ROM booting, encrypting my data. I can use the phone, my pin code works in android but it's impossible to decrypt with TWRP...
Édit : found that message from argraur on telegram, so basically we have to wait for an updated twrp ? "Android release 9.0.0_r36 (r37) with May security patch has updated FBE encryption that breaks decryption in TWRP."

That doesn't even make sense. Twrp will not decrypt your phone.
Install Miui again, backup your data, to your desktop, by manually dragging your files over.
Go here and download DM-VERITY, FORCED ENCRYPTION, AND DISC QUOTA DISABLER you will use it to flash between updates or for dirty flashing Miui updates.
Next go back to TWRP the choose format and type yes reboot to TWRP ( you will se a message that says you have no OS are you sure?) Yes, reboot to TWRP
TWRP is not your issue, go read
and read the first comment here
Format storage, or wait for the TWRP and you still need to the format storage, Again a TWRP update will not resolve the issue. We have all had this exact issue.
I'm using another workaround:
With the all in one tool, we can flash .zip from a PC.
So I could install a custom kernel file from my pc directly into phone without loosing data.
Annoying thing is that I need the PC... Can't flash files that are in phone memory... Not such a big issue...
Another question, can I make a backup from the PC? Used to do it via twrp, but it is not safe with that issue...

This twrp is working! Thanks a lot!
I recently formatted my G6, downloaded Pie from the motorola assistant, flashed everything and installed TWRP 3.3.1-0.
TWRP boots up fine, im able to flash anything (like magisk) but it refuses to decrypt the phone. It shows a screen to input a password or a pattern (depending on what i've configured) but no matter what I tried it just fails to decrypt with the "Decrypt took too long, killing process". So far I've tried
* Pattern
* Password
* Swipe
* All the previous combinations with "boot time pattern/password requirement" enabled/disabled.
I'd like to keep the phone encrypted and still use TWRP, so my question is, has someone managed to use TWRP with the G6? If its not possible, I'd like to disable it, although i've found no tutorials about it.
Thanks!
I fixed it by using the 64 bits version of twrp i think. You can try it i guess?
Where did you download it? twrp.me /motorola/motorolamotog6.html shows only one version avaialble.

I don't think what you're trying to do is possible.
Don't you need to wipe all the data anyway for the new rom?
Personally, I'd hit cancel, and wipe data entirely, which will obviously erase everything from any apps.

What I'm trying to do is create backups and keep encryption. I'm able to format data and flash firmware... But now I want to backup it! Is that possible?
I used fastboot to flash twrp-3.5.0_9-0-raphael.img. I used TWRP make a full backup to internal memory. Then I flashed xiaomi.eu_multi_HMK20ProMI9TPro_21.2.24_v12-11.zip which didn't work. So back to fastboot->TWRP to restore backup.
But it doesn't ask for my pattern anymore! All my files remain encrypted. Command line adb shell twrp decrypt fails too.
Is there a special TWRP version that can help me out? Or is it game over?

That's correct, but in my case I'm running EliteROM wich is decrypted by default, if I want to backup my system with TWRP-3.6.2 the super partition shows "zero MB" even without any lockscreen option... not like in OFox where it shows the real partition size... So, the backup will be done without system or super-partition. Am I right? Thank you.

For AOSP rom or Custom Miui roms, first installation requires to format data not just wipe.
Again remove lock screen security and with the TWRP:
If the TWRP ask to "enter password for the user" just select cancel.
Wipe/format data type yes reboot TWRP.(if errors red lines restart the procedure).
rebooting to the TWRP on each try.
