Hi guys,
Which method is better? OTA update or Odin update? If I do OTA I'd do a factory reset but I still think there'd be 'remnants' of previous OTA especially in this case moving from Nougat to Oreo.
Because I did the OTA update, factory reset but now I'm facing battery draining faster than normal.
Battery draining.........
For one, I prefer a full wipe, none of the update stuff, so Odin would be my method.
Second, Battery draining after recently flashing is normal, You need to allow time for the device to settle. The kernel needs to do alot processes after a flash and normally you dont see decent battery until 24 hours.

Yeah, I'm flashing the firmware via Odin now. Hopefully that resolves it.
That could be it too, as it was factory reset so it was still 'setting up'.
Thanks

I'm getting unusually high Android System usage. Sometimes it outnumbers screen usage. If I start using the phone at the end of the day(10% battery life), my max SOT will be something like 2hrs with 20-30% Android System use. It happens on every single kernel and rom (SM-N920C). So here are the things I tried:
Stock russian based image with deepsleep fix/stock kernel (CF 2.66) N920CXXU2AOK6_N920COXE2AOJ5_N920CXXU2AOK5_HOME.tar.md5
Stock AUE based image with deepsleep fix/stock kernel (CF 2.66) N920CXXU2AOK6_N920COJP2AOJ5_N920CXXU2AOK5_HOME.tar.md5
Stock based image with arter97 v11 kernel and philz recovery.
Stock based image with SkyHigh v3.5 kernel with philz/twrp recovery.
Dr. Ketan rom with arter97/skyhigh kernel
Venom rom with arter97/skyhigh kernel
The problem is not in deepsleep, because the device does deepsleep when checking through betterbatterystats.
Tried disabling location/location history, android device manager, most of the samsung bloat through titanium backup. Also ejected the sim to make sure its not a network issue. Wifi is connected but when I check from betterbatterystats everything seems ok. No unusual wakelocks or anything. I literally tried everything.
Please help me.

Let the phone settle down after flashing. I guess it so happens because it keeps system wakeclocks to check your usage patterns and then try to save battery accordingly from 2nd or 3rd charge cycle.
I'd recommend to wait after flashing a firmware.
Assuming you have a N920C (single sim), flash the OK7 version ROM (or even the iOiO custom ROM) with SkyHigh v3.5 kernel and allow it be stable after 1 or 2 days and then check. (You'll be surprised with good battery life)
Sounds good?

I wish it worked as great as it sounded. I have done that. It came to the point where the system started asking about optimizing apps (after couple of days) and I agreed. Nothing changed. It most likely is not a wakelock. Standby drain is normal but once I turn the screen on it starts going down really fast, like I can see it going down in front of my eyes.

It may sound odd, but did you try a wipe data/factory reset?

Like I said, I have been doing full stock installs, meaning everything is wiped off and I always set everything up from scratch, no backups.
Hi, i m using Z1 (C6903) for more than 2 years and recently after updating my phone to 14.6.A.1.236 (OTA) i see mobile battery drains so fast and tried reinstalling same version by downloading from XperiFirm and flashed but still by battery drains so fast not even 5 hrs. Is it a bug in this version ? and my keyboard (Xperia chinese keyboard) stopped responding and phone restarted and from that time Learn words and quick fixes (Text input settings) not working. Tried to uninstall keyboard update and rolled back but still the same problem tried to clear App data but didnt work out. How to fix all these problems. Tell me the solution ASAP as i m not able to use my phone as battery drains faster and not able to text easily.
I'm running that version on my unrooted Z1 with no such problems.
Make a backup of anything you want keeping, then try a factory reset, or do a full wipe and reflash the firmware.
I replaced the battery on my Z1 after 18 months or so as it was going bad.

Hello everyone.
I`ve got rooted Nexus 6 with Franco kernel. From time to time it shows system security updates, which I install`s. But I notices on my android security patch level stops on January 2016 and still want to install February updates. Everytime N6 tries to install February updates. Does anybody know whats going on? Maybe it`s because I locked with security password on my twrp? After rebooting twrp show`s and I really dont know are updates installed well. I quess not. Can someone help?
And another question, does this android security updates will remove my root?

Security updates will not work; unless the device is completely stock.
You should look at installing the OTA from this page - instructions are provided. If you want to retain the kernel,TWRP & and root you'll have to re-flash them when you're finished.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/ota
If you're unencrypted (I'm not - I prefer the security to an extra 10 minutes of battery life) do some reading first - I'm not sure how the OTA works with an unencrypted device. Maybe other members can advise both of us on this point.
Thx for answer`s.
Correct me if I wrong, but I`ve got stock rom, but with Franco kernel, and root, but it`s still stock, right? Does this could be a reason? All my data are encrypted, so maybe this could be a reason ( however after every update reboot I decrypt`s my data), I`ll switch off encrypting my N6 and try again update it.
----------EDIT------------
Guess, NLBeev was right. I can`t make an OTA update when my N6 is rooted, only manually method. I really afraid of this manually updates, because of losing something from my phone, or even brick it.
fear is something that xda can not help you with. itll happen through out life, in many situations. the only thing that you can do is deal with it and move on.
I manually update mine every update and have yet to have an issue.
I f you're encrypted (good!) then my earlier concern is irrelevant. Sideload the newest OTA at the link I gave you. I've done it now several times with two Nexus 5s and a Nexus 6. It's quick and simple and doesn't touch your data.
But I still always take a TWRP backup first and copy it to my laptop. Can't be too careful...
Once again thanks for help! I`ll try install them manually, as fast as I make backup by twrp.
Ach, I forgot, last question, which update should I download? I`ve got January system security updates, so should I download every single one by one? Or just last one (July 6.0.1 (MOB30O))?
Regards!
By "manually' do you mean extracting the separate components (system, radio, boot...)? I strongly recommend the OTA sideload method. Fast and simple, with no data loss.
You need only do it once. Download the MOB30O OTA and sideload it. Then if you want you can flash TWRP and root.
Hello,
I got my Note9 (N960W) at the beginning of December and was really happy with it, great quick phone, getting 8-9 hours SOT with AccuBattery, which is quite exagerated probably, and around 4h30 while monitoring with GSam.
I got the Android 10 update on Monday, March 9. I used to lose around 8-9% total overnight, but now with Android 10, it's more than 20%-30%. SOT is really worse than before too, but screen off time is the worst, more than 5% per hour. It was 2% per hour with Android 9.
I didn't change anything, didn't install any new apps or didn't change my habits. I just upgraded the OS. What the hell happened? Anyone with the same problem? What can I do? I already wiped off the cache but it didn't change a thing...
Thanks for any help...
Edit: I forgot to mention I also got a couple random freeze and reboot while using TuneIn Radio, something which never happened while on Android 9...
Do a fresh install and see if problems persists, if not, you fixed it.
For me fresh install solved all bugs and problems I had with dirty update
Do a factory reset or new clean install.
My phone is 1.5 years old and battery life is very well with android 10. About 7hrs sot.

This. Android updates are terrible with the incremental update system where only the changed portion of code are pushed to the device.
always do a factory reset when ther are major changes, such as when we went from 8->9 and 9->10.
Thanks for the replies.
But what's the difference between a factory reset and a clean install? If there is one, which one is the best?

Theoretically, if you update your phone from OTA and something goes wrong, then it's possible that the problem won't be fixed by a factory reset because the files it's "restoring" from are already corrupt in some way.
When you clean install through odin, you are flashing the entire OS and replacing every file in the filesystem. This can solve a lot of random problems when Android phones get updated from one flavor to another, i.e, Android 8 -> 9, or 9-> 10.
A lotmof people here disagree that factory reset and a clean install are different. But I disagree with them. If you only update through OTA, then it's entirely possible something can be "corrupt" in the filesystem.
This is because OTA updates are "block based", so instead of replacing all of the files for an update, only the modified "blocks" of data are downloaded and installed. So over time, it's possible to get a bad OTA update that doesn't clean up prior conflicting files, or something like that.

I didn't do factory reset or clean install so far.
This is weird. Today, I was off work and I nearly had 8 hours SoT. Screen off time seems to be improving too. Still, got some wifi bugs today, it shut off a few times for no reason while being home.
But just before posting this, I got a random reboot.... Hmmmm...... Never had a random reboot while on Android 9.
Looks like I'll have to do this reset or clean install....

Yep..always must leave phone 1-2 days to see exactly how battery is.
For my opionion just reset your phone and you'll be fine.
Do a reset from recovery if you want..
Vol up + Bixby + power buttons.. and pick factory reset ...

I prefer odin, because unlike a factory reset, you can use the HOME_CSC file and keep you apps and settings intact, while re writing the filesystem for system. If that fixes things then no need to re set up your device, saving you between 30 mins-2 hours depending on how many settings you prefer to be a certain way.
If that doesn't fix your problem, then you can nuke the whole thing with the CSC file.
Factory reset through the phone relies on having the correct files to restore from, and with the way Android updates, it's becoming more common for the filesystem to get mildly corrupt in one way or another where factory reset through the device doesn't fix the issue thanks to block based updates. I don't think the block based system is cleaning up after itself properly and is leaving behind old code that conflicts with new code personally, but that's just a guess.

Thanks. Where can I find the exact file I need for my phone to flash with Odin? I'm from Canada, on the Videotron carrier and the phone is the N960W.

Search xda for samfirm download tool, install it and the needed windows components on your computer.
Then go to sammobile.com and look up your phone, sm-n960w and find your specific carrier code, it'll be 3 letters. Then use that code for the "region" box in the samfirm tool, and sm-n960w for model. It will download the latest firmware from samobile at the fastest speed your internet will allow.
Alternatively you can download it straight from samobile, but the download speed is DSL like unless you pay for an account.
The flash through odin, make sure you load the HOME_csc file and not the stands CSC file in order to reta9your settings and data.
flash CSC (along with all other fields) if your problem isn't fixed.
i got 960ou1 and i get 7 hours or more with the 10 update

Thanks. I'll hold for a while, as the battery gets better as it seems... But I keep this in my bookmarks.
Well, I just flashed with the HOME_CSC file. Hope it'll fix the problems with the battery...
I have searched all over the place for anything that works with no luck, so asking sharper minds.
My Note8 phone started restarting randomly if left idle. The deets:
Have tried settings, updates, safe mode, cache wipes, factory resets etc multiple times. Not better even without loading backed up data and apps.
A reboot is usually every 3-10 minutes
Reboots in full; functions properly when not restarting
Can stay on as long as there is battery unless lock screen is dismissed
Stays on connected to the laptop/charger.
I concluded this may be a faulty battery as I let it run dry a few times since upgrading to a newer Note.
BUT
If I let Audible (ebook reader) or YouTube run in the background. It is a continuous operation and the phone does not restart until the app is closed. (Phone restarts with or without Audible installed so the app does not seem to be the problem).
Does it seem like the battery to anyone else, with the apps functioning?
Or should I reflash Samsung stock ROM. Those seem like the only options to me. Anything?
Thanks for taking the time.
Tried flashing the official Samsung ROM again to see if it helped.
Odin: 3.14.1
ROM: Official N950FXXSCDTF1 (Australian)
As long as the phone was downloading updates after the flash, there were no resets. As soon as it went idle it rebooted within a couple of minutes.
Hi, have you solved the problem? Have you tried to change the battery?
ok.
Install wakelock v3 from play store.
My galaxy note 8 had the same problem and it got fixed after installing it.

This works!!! Thanks alot!
The OP is since 2 years inactive, therefore I don't quote his message.
But according to my understanding, this is an issue with deep-sleep and should be properly fixed in kernel via an OTA update from Samsung or by trying to flash latest stock ROM from sammobile.com with ODIN or alternatively (recommended) you can try to flash a custom kernel. I've made one for Note8 and so far nobody reported such a deep-sleep issue to me.
I don't recommend at all to use that wakelock app, since it's only a workaround and will prevent your Note8 to enter in deep-sleep mode. That means higher battery usage without working deep-sleep.

Thank you for the advice Sir. I did flash stock rom via Odin but no luck. Wakelock v3 is the only app that worked for me. As you said it drains 2 to 3 percent battery per hour.

Sir, the app drains 2 to 3 percent battery per hour even when the screen is off.
@AVMY
Yup, because phone stays awake. Honestly I can't believe that even on latest Samsung kernel it's not fixed. Strange, unfortunately I don't have an Note8 for testing. I've only S8 phone but the hardware is almost the same and there is no deep-sleep issue, no matter if I use latest stock kernel from Samsung or if I use my custom kernel.
Try with A2N kernel, if it'll still reboot, just post last_kmsg (see post #3 how-to provide last_kmsg) in the Note8 thread, then I'll check what's wrong. But as I said, so far nobody reported this.
