Sharing files between Mi Max 2 and Ubuntu 17.10 minimal? - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
I have:
- 1 Mi Max 2, MIUI Global Stable, v9.2.1.0 (NDDMIEK), Developer options: ON, USB Debugging: ON
- 3 computer/laptop, Ubuntu 17.10 core + Xubuntu Minimal
Problem:
- When I connect Max 2 with the computer, they realize each other. But from the computer, it does not find out the Mi Max 2 device:

No Max 2 folder appears in the sidebar:
It would work as normal if I install a rich desktop environment such as Xubuntu (full version), Gnome 2 or 3, etc. But I don't want to get a lot of bloatwares belong to these DEs. I guess that it just needs to install some libs.
Do you know what's missing, or any recommendation?
Thanks,
Dong

You can install gmtp
sudo apt install gmtp
Or use airdroid for example
Or use fooview and enable remote manager .. It will give you a ftp link you can add in your file manager or in a ftp application like filezilla
Or if you prefer adb
sudo apt install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

Thank you. After reading your reply, I've tried to install both tools. But it seems they aren't solution for my case. No new device listed within File Manager.
For gmtp, it recognized the device as Mi-2s. Then it crashed and I have to manually kill its thread:
adb got the device ID and listed in console. But nothing more.
Note that when I connect the cable, I still got notified from the phone to choose connection mode. And charging is OK.

USB debugging enabled on the phone ?
I try with my phone and I just to choose charging only or file transfer. Just after, phone disk is mounted and I can browse it in my favorite file manager.

Yes, as I've described at the first post. I'm sure that it will work exactly as your phone once I install a full desktop environment (not minimal version) or install a full OS (not core only). I just consider about which library it requires to automatically mount phone disk?

strange, if usb storage devices works then it should work for all android devices (in mtp mode) without another library.
is usb_storage module kernel loaded ?

Since adb sees the device have you tried and adb commands
adb shell
Or
adb pull
For example
If it works there are adb based gui applications .. I think it's called adb if i remember correctly

By the way .. I like minimal installation like you but to save myself the trouble i install full ubuntu then remove the applications that i don't want then remove orphan packages and keep the libraries
Of course this can and will many times remove ubuntu-desktop package or similat metas but that won't harm you
If you are willing to try that use synaptic .. It's much better than apt or stock package manager

@lightman33: I'm not sure, but other devices that connect to the computer through USB ports are working well. Only problem with Mi Max 2.

Thank you. It sees the device but could not connect to.
I will try to compare list of packages when typing "sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop" to see which one make change.

is your phone working well on another computer ?
ask that to you because it's look like a configuration problem related to your phone and not to your computer.

Yes, it's. On the same computer I have 3 different OSes: Ubuntu 17.10 (Minimal Xubuntu), ElementaryOS, Windows 10. It works well on Elementary and Windows.
As I've said. It would work as well if I install full version of xubuntu-desktop instead of minimal version. It also worked with Linux Mint 18.3 before.

Install APKs on your device by double clicking on your PC with installAPK [Beta 1]

Android is really great, but there a few points of Android ownership that are a bit of a pain... one of which is installing APKs on your device. Enter installAPK!
The current release is Beta 1 - usual Beta caveats apply!
What it does
installAPK is currently for Windows only. After installation on your machine, you can double click APK files to install them on your USB attached android device. Simple as that!
Where do I get it?
Download the install EXE and USB drivers if required here at MoDaCo - http://shortun.com/3o
Anything else I should know?
This is the first Beta, tested on XP, Vista and Windows 7, but please post here with any issues!
P
PS Android SDK download / install is NOT required!

Hi paul
nice to see you on here
your CAB file to phone app was great
will test this next time I need to install an app to install to my G1 from my pc

OMFG! You rock! <3
Nothing magic here...
It just runs 'adb install whatever.apk'.
Just as easy to simply associate "apk" files with the command "adb install".
Of course!
It does mean you don't have to manually download the SDK and grab ADB however... and just running this setup is easier than doing that, installing and associating.
It also puts a nicer GUI on it, a GUI that will be updated as development progresses, things like 'Save a copy of the APK on your storage card?' and much much more.
P
Wow will have to try it later
Might I suggest a Start Menu shortcut option, I created mine manually, but it'd be nice to leave the option to the user in the install process.
A start menu shortcut to do what?
P
To launch the program. I had to browse into the Program Files folder to launch it, and figured if it just automatically adds to the start menu, it's a tad bit easier.
Great app, but if your going to install a lot of apps after a wipe I find it better to setup a .bat file and just run it. After all the Hero roms I have installed it makes it 20 times faster. Here is the example on my batch file.
Code:
adb install apps\art.wild.gdocs.apk
adb install apps\at.abraxas.mountusb.apk
adb install apps\com.a0soft.gphone.aTrackDog.apk
adb install apps\com.androidapps.widget.battery.apk
adb install apps\com.ap.AppDock.apk

yeah I have the batch file in mt tools folder, and a apps folder that hold all my .apk in that tools folder as well.

ADB Driver - Access is Denied

So I just installed Windows 7 on my machine and was trying to ADB with my Android since I used it ALL the time on Windows XP.
I put the phone in Debug mode and plugged into my computer and told it the location of the driver. It seems to work well for a second and then it tells me that there was a problem installing the driver. It then says:
HTC ADB Composite Device Driver (not sure exactly of this...)
Access is Denied

Anyone else seeing anything similar on Vista or Windows 7? BTW I already tried this in Safe Mode as well.

Nope I have administrative rights and even tried it in safe mode.
Would you be able to zip up the drivers you used or link to where you downloaded them from?
So strange.
Even if you have admin rights, UAC can f it up.
Make sure you right click on command prompt and click "Run as Administrator"
Also, do you have x64? That requires a signed drivers. I don't remember if the ADB drivers were signed by microsoft, but if they aren't, it won't work unless you apply the work around

Simple Solution
Here is a simple solution without having to read that long thread:
For future reference, here is how to install the drivers or fix the drivers should they not be working.
Everything you need is contained within this:
http://www.divshare.com/download/8845496-f72
This is the howto documentation
This is how to get your android phone to connect to you PC
to use functions like adb and other developer tools.
If you have installed the phone before but adb function dont work
then:
1) Run USBDeview
2) Select the list item(s) that have the word "android" within the description
3) Right Click > Uninstall
If you have done the above, or are plugging your phone in for the first time:
1) Plug in phone
2 a) When prompted to install drivers select the "android driver" folder
contained within this tutorial
2 b) If no message appears or you get a message saying drivers failed
to install. Goto device manager
2 b i) start > All Programs > accessories > run
type devmgmt.msc and press ok.
3 b) find the android device in device manager, it will have a warning icon
next to it and be in a section like unknown.
4 b) Right click and install driver
5 a) When prompted to install drivers select the "android driver" folder
contained within this tutorial
Click to collapse
USBDeview is awesome but....
Even after removing all of the drivers associated with my device, as soon as I try to install the fresh new drivers, I still get "Access Denied" at the end of the install.

I have this same issue on an Ideos U8150 and on XP... At one point in the past it was working (before I flashed Cyanogen 7). Since then I have tried numerous driver packages, both specific to my phone and generic, and have had no luck getting past the access denied error.. I have even gone as far as changing the registry permission as well as checking all of my folder permissions... I am stumped.
Adb root - run that from command prompt.

I know it a while ago since you posted this but still, it helped me fix the "Access denied" thing which i didn't know how to fix. I installed ADB drivers 3 times... anyways, tnx :good:
So If you are like me you had this same issue in 2022. Idk if it will be a fix for you but it was for me.
follow this youtube video for the exact setup so you can get hopfully the same out com to the T.

1. make sure you're in administrator mode for command prompt.
2. The file name has changed from what it was so instead of doing
cd adb\platform-tools_r30.0.4-windows\platform-tools
It's now this
cd adb\platform-tools\
This will get you to the correct path if you followed the file placement in the video.
next all you have to do is type
adb devices on the command prompt. to test if it worked
other things that you might have to try is seeing if the driver it self is being blocked. you might also have to turn off and back on developer mode. View other posts in this thread if it's still stuck for you. Hopefully I helped one person at least.

Ok, first off I start the app thinking it was an installer. Tells me no device is connected.
I assume the the app is now shut off since there is no indication of it running.
I plug in my phone and turn on debugging and then I get a window that says
'adb' is not a valid integer value. Then something about my adb server is out of date. Beats me what this supposed to mean.
I attempt to click the X on the warning message and it keeps poping up. So I used task manager to kill it.
WindowsXp SP3.
DroidExplorer works
Out of all seriousness I like your slim and mean approach. Just doesn't seem to work on my machine.

You get this message if you have an adb server running (like from droid explorer) that is a different version then you are trying to start "right now". Droid Explorer uses 1.6r3 with the current install, the next release has 1.6r4.

Out of curiosity, what is the app doing that "requires" busybox. With Droid Explorer, I use busybox's ls command because the stock one sucks and doesn't display all the information when doing a ls -lF, plus i dont think it supports --color=always

anyhow, if you open a command prompt and type "adb devices" what does it output.
Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled on the device. Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging
Thanks camalot for your help, you are good guy. And also THX to you UpGrad3 (you are first ).
BTW new version soon
hmmm doesn't seem to work well with a multi-monitor setup or maybe some other issue.
When I start it with the phone not plugged in I get the Device not found off to the edge of the monitor. (APK Manager shows on the taskbar)
Connect the phone and Refresh and it's found and click OK.
Then your app disappears... nothing the the taskbar but if I check Task Manager it's running.
Little help please

when i open the program i receive this message:
and when i click ok it opens like this:
please fix this cause i really like this program and appreciate ur work
as i said before, it's not program problem. this error showing because of program can not read informations form your phone. many people had issues like you (also on different forums), and every time problem was with SDK/ADB.

[Q] ADB issues, looking for ideas

For some reason I cannot get ADB to work with my NC. I cleaned out ADB and reinstalled with all updates except for the Galaxy Tab add ons. I used the driver that is available all over the forum and got the proper device id in device manager. When I try to check devices I just get nothing connected. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help is appreciated. Device manager also still has the USB as mass storage also.

ADB is not the issue, it must be some kind of driver problem. the SDK is in my path, it will run no matter what directory im in. It works fine on the vibrant.

Plugged in Rooted Nook.

adb composite device showed up
reboot
plugged nook back in, now both USB storage and Adb composite device show up
Be lazy, get adb wireless from the market. I didn't even bother setting up my PC

There's a thread somewhere around here with a solution that worked for me, it involved adding 0x2080 to the adb_USB.initial file in /user/yourname/.android.
Edit: Oh yeah, adbwireless is awesome so give that a try if you can't get USB to work.
+1 for AdbWireless!!!
Its free and you can get it from the market.
(I finally gave up after days of trying to get the usb drivers figured out on my computer.)

Didnt even think of that. I use it for my Vibrant and love it. thanks.
My wireless works great...but I still need the usb connection to modify wireless settings to allow connection to adhoc network (mywi on iPhone 4).
I've tried everything and am still having a problem.
I am running a Windows Vista machine. When I attempt to install the USB drivers, it runs through the steps, but at the end, it says:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
Android Composite ADB Interface
The data is invalid.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."
I've cleared it all and still have the same problem.
I ran it on an XP machine, and was able to install the drivers, however, the nook still does not show up in the list of devices.
Any ideas?

Thx to the Member brant34 of 4pd.ru who has uploaded the new Version from HiSuite.
The only Problem was that the Language was in Chinese, but i found a simple fix for that:
After you install the prog (you don't need to deinstall the old one, just update)
go to your'e userfolder than AppData/Local/HiSuite/userdata
(for this you need to unblock hidden files in foldersettings)
and open UserSettings.xml with an editor
change this Line:
Code:
<utpsdoc>
<language>
<active>[COLOR="Red"]_de[/COLOR]</active>
to your'e Language code example en:
Code:
<utpsdoc>
<language>
<active>[COLOR="Red"]_en-us[/COLOR]</active>
Now you can start the Programm :highfive:
You can find all available Language codes under
Win 32bit
C Programms/HiSuite/LanguageFiles/
Win 64bit
C Programms (x86) /HiSuite/LanguageFiles/
DOWNLAOD

This version is now also in SK language
others must be checked

May be you can try on another computer to see if it's the application or the PC/OS...
these versions are still in developpement, but show a good evolution...
perhaps

Perhaps you must give permissions to the cell phone to communicate with the software HISUITE !!! in the developer options press on USB debugging, on the contrary you cannot access the cell phone !!!!

2.3.35 working and translated following your tutorial, thanks
In my configuration I needed to give hisuite.exe permission for outgoing TCP to 127.0.0.1 or it would not connect

My test machine is running windows 7 64bits with Windows Firewall Control to manage permissions, it depends on your configuration. Hisuite also called home at 44% progress during backup and resumed after connection failed.
Adb needs also to connect to localhost so if you didnt add a rule for that you shouldnt need one now.
In case is of any use, this is how I updated:
I installed over v1.8, during pc installation and before choosing target path I took a copy of hisuite.apk from windows temp folder and installed it by hand on my device so it upgraded to v2.3.35. I also saved a copy of .apk on sdcard
After checking backup and restore worked ok I tested backward compatibility: I connected the phone to another pc with hisuite 1.8, which replaced hisuite.apk with an older version. Disconnected and back to test machine with latest version which failed to connect and transfer .apk, I then updated manually to latest hisuite.apk. on the phone and worked.
it seams latest hisuite.apk is not backward compatible.
I also found what I believe is a nice feature, under contacts -> message there is a button to place calls from the desktop.
Test it together with 'Speaker Mode' apk and worked ok!
