Any ideas?
I have been experimenting with upgrading and down-grading my tab, it now seems that I can't flash any ROM that contains a hidden.rfs, the flash will just stop near the end of flashing the hidden.rfs and never continue, then I have to go through recovery processes to get a working tab back.
I managed to get my Tab back to CPW standard UK JJ3 by dumping the ROM from my other Tab and writing it, I then tried to update with Kies, which also hung at what seems to be exactly the same place.
I have tried repartitioning several times with the p1_add_hidden.pit but it just doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas? Can I check the size of the hidden partition see if that' the problem? Then modify the hidden.rfs to make it smaller so it fits?
Nobody at all got any feedback on this?
Anyone had any luck with this? I'm guessing it's a partitioning issue but it'd be good to know.

It sounds like you're currently partitioned without the hidden partition. I would think flashing a full ROM like JJ4 with the P1_add_hidden.pit in Odin would be the fix.
After thats up and running, use my JMC upgrade package to safely upgrade.

Roto i wanna ask you something. You say "safely" upgrade why ? Because on your FW's you remove the boot.bin and the SBL.bin ? So that a user wont be able to flash them and something go wrong ?
As far as i know my tab ( A euro one ), is factory unlocked and i will have no problem whatsoever in upgrading the bootloader and the baseband.
Isnt that right ?

Unlocking is unrelated. I say safely because flashing a bootloader is the only thing that makes me squirm. If it fails your device is toast. I never want to give anyone firmware that has the potential to destroy their device. I'd feel bad

And you are so right in removing them...
The leaks from Samsung's servers of JM6/JMA/JMC/JMD flash a signed recovery, after flashing it is impossible to flash unsigned sbl, boot, and zImage. No more downgrade (and possibly upgrade).

I thought my original post covered this? I can't flash _any_ ROM that uses the hidden partition. I have tried repartitioning a dozen times wit hthe p1_add_hidden.pit, that goes through fine, but NO ROM, full or otherwise, down or up from my current one will successfully complete flashing the "hidden" partition.

You never mentioned JJ4 or Odin specifically, hence my post. Unless you spell out exactly which firmwares you tried and which software you used to flash with, how can anyone offer assistance?
If you've tried ALL firmware and All flashing software, that leaves only your computer or Tab at fault.

Im not really worried about my Tab, i just think its a cause for concern that somehow iv stumbled on this problem. If its just the flash in my tab thats damaged its not a problem.
I have tried every firmware available on samfirmware as well as ripping the firmware from an identical tab i have.
Neither Heimdall, Kies nor Odin (either version) would get past flashing hidden and they all stop at about the same point. I have tried flashing various firmware without hidden with no problems. If i then repartition it will flash about 80% of the hidden then just stops.
Problem isnt my pc, i have tried several machines and virtual machines.
I think its a curious problem that would be good to find the cause of.

I'm around and will hop on the channel now. Don't have too long but maybe we can look into this a bit.
I just noticed what has veen going on with tje secured boot loaders etc. I will check mine with the script once I get home from my trip tomorrow to see if any info froem my tab is relevent to fixing the problem. I noticed a mention of creating jigs, im not sure what hardware is required but I have a couple of usb-rs232 connectors on order for an unrelated project so if it requires the same hardware I can put a spare one to use and build a jtag/jig cable for the tab and see if I can help the cause.

Question for rotohammer
Once upon a time I bricked my Verizon Galaxy Tab trying to flash a custom ROM, the only way I could bring it back was by using Odin and flashing the hidden pit. Now every time I install the original verizon rom my tab is extremely, extremely slow. I have been trying to reformat and wipe clean to start over, but I haven't had any luck.
Any suggestions on how to: either flash the right pit on it or remove the hidden partition? Anything I can do to bring my tab to full speed. I have also tried the overclocked rom with voodoo5, and at this point anything I put there is extremely slow. The only way I can get it to operate normally (Kind of) is to flash the Honeycomb Alpha rom, then restore to a day when it was working fine, however this breaks my auto rotate sensor.
That is how I use it now a days, but it sucks that I cannot use it on landscape mode.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Follow up from my previous question to rotohammer
By the way, just in case you were wondering, the rom I flashed to unbrick it was a GSM ROM, that was the only way to make it past the Samsung logo.
So, my theory is that I have problems with it because now I am trying to flash CDMA roms to a GSM partition/files system? Excuse me if my post does not make much sense or I am using the wrong terminology, I am extremely new a this. I just know enough to get myself in trouble.
Thank you again for any help.
I've encountered the same problem as the original poster. SGT with CPW CSC causes problems with the hidden.rfs when trying to flash ROMs. Does appear to be a size issue with the hidden partition - I wonder whether this has been sized incorrectly when it was originally flashed as re-partitioning doesn't help. I'm currently on a XEU ROM so I guess I'll find out when Gingerbread is officially released whether I can flash that or not. If not, I think it'll need to the internal SD card repartitioning.
Anyone got any tips on how to do this?
Hi all. I could use some help with this issue I've been having. Basically, about a week ago, I went on a trip to Colorado and at the same time had an issue with my data through VM. After talking to them, I had to change my service plan. Since then I haven't been able to maintain any kind of connection with VM; it reads no service a lot, even in places I've never had an issue (home, school, practically everywhere...). Before I deal with VMs customer service yet again, I wanted to see if there is any issues with my phone/rom/kernel and any updates to either I could use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/help/how-to-treat-sd-internal-storage-t3029186
I used this guide to root my phone and install all that stuff in order to use my sd card as my internal storage. So, could there be some issue with that wHich could cause me to not be able to get any service? Is there anything I could do on my side to determine if the problem is with my phone?
If the issue lies with VMs network, are there any updates to the kernel or roms with newer versions of Android that I could use and still use my sd card as my main storage? Side question: on any rooted device, could you do the ad card as main memory thing with the apps, Apparted and Link2sd?
Thanks anyone who can help me out.

Alright, tried that, too, now. Still a no-go.
I'm not sure if I have a custom rom, but I don't think so. I just followed that guide, and I believe it only needed me to install a custom kernel. This thing acts weird. I'll pick it up and unlock it, and it will have 5 bars, but then quickly jump down to 1 then no service. As I'm driving to class, I'll have 4-5 bars but when I get to school, it's gone. It feels like whenever there are WiFi signals, I lose my service connection, if that helps.
Thank you so much, btw.

Hmm, definitely going to try this tonight. I've now tried to revert to my stock image, and things just haven't gone well since then. So, since I've already removed or backed up all data, should I just wipe everything (data, system, boot, cache, dalvik, etc), flash root, flash custom kernel, then restore this rom? That way, everything is fresh with no chance of interferences?

No flashing anything the boot/kernel is already in the folder just wipe and restore no using custom kernels there's already a custom kernel in it. It already has root access you do not even need a computer to do this just download extract and move the modded folder to twrps backup folder and restore. This is a full custom modified CyanogenMod 11.. Not stock rom at all.

Okay, wow. I really like this, man. It's really slick. But, sadly, I'm still SOL. Sometimes there is a connection with VM, but it goes away quickly. I've really appreciated your help, but the problem seems to lay on VMs side, or there is a physical problem in my phone preventing it from maintaining a connection.
Im going to try to deal with their customer service and see if they can do anything. In the end, the phone only cost me $50, I guess. If I get it worked out, I'll post what it was about so you may be able to help the next guy with the issue, lol.

Lol that's definitely gotta be VM's side then.. I'm on VM to but let me ask you a question... Is that a pay as you go, like 1 monthly payment or is it prepaid? If it's the monthly payment then ask VM to reprovision the phone but restore back to your stock backup before calling.

It's their $35/month unlimited plan. I just got off the phone with them after 1.5 hours, so not that long, lol. They claim there is a cell tower being worked on, and everything should clear up in 48-72 hours....and yet I can't get a stable signal 20 miles away at school, so it sounds like a rote answer when they have no clue. On the other hand, my wife's S2 barely gets a signal, too.
They are going to comp my for the 2 weeks it's been down, tho. If after this weekend there isn't any improvment....wwell, I'll figure something out, I guess.

Lol, I've figured that one out when they told me that a couple months ago, I called back the next day and asked about the tower and they told me there was no record of any tower problems. Yeah, she's on VM also, with a Samsung S2, completely stock. When I check her signal, she has a connection, but it's low, around -100 to -120 dba.

Hey Mike. I hate to bother you again, especially since I've been reading how much you've been dealing with other people, so I think I know how to do this, I just would like to run this by you to make sure I have it right.
I'm going to try to have VM replace my phone, so I need it back to looking clean.
1) So, I need to relock the bootloader first. I first "fastboot oem lock" in cmd, then.
2) I DL the RUU from HTC's site, specifically the VM 1.49.652.3 file.
3) While still in fastboot usb, I run the RUU repeatedly till it completes
4) Go back to hboot and do a factory reset.
Thanks man. I've tried to read things through, but I want to make sure it'll be clean if they do replace it.
Edit: Wait, I just saw someone said to input "fastboot oem rebootRUU" then run the RUU.

Just relock the bootloader then flash the stock recovery and then run the RUU from the PC but you don't need to factory reset after that because the RUU is the reset.

Obviously you haven't done a proper clean flash. I've flashed every rom available and no fcs. Only time I've had signal trouble was with att(gsm). Never lost signal, would just go from 2 bars to none then back again, but never lost signal.

Hey, after decrypting my phone and using the method you posted in the pe thread to flash roms, I am still getting service problems. I've also noticed that anytime I have tried to open carrier settings on the phone, I get a ".com.android.phone has stopped." So I cant update the prl at all. I've seen people post about modifying the APN settings but I thought that was irrelevant on sprint. I'm honestly out of ideas.

Well, when nothing helps, it's time to go back to stock.
Get firmware for your location - different firmware (modem especially) for different markets.
Don't use any "tools" or .bat files you find here and flash with fastboot - do 1 command at a time and note results, (remove sim before flashing and reinsert after you've booted into stock once).
See what happens. Sometimes things get messed up enough to where flashing stock is the only thing to do. That'll really clean it out.
I had a real funky issue when going from att to vz. Spent hours with straight talk trying to sort it out (had 4g but no calls or texts). Flashed stock - popped sim in - bang - everything working, and has been ever since and I've flashed them all, some several times, still good.

When I first got my xt1806 I didn't load a Sim card in it when I powered it up, I immediately unlocked the bootloader, installed recovery, flashed a ROM and just used WiFi for a few days with no issues. But once I did put a new Sim in it I noticed all I could get was 3g - and with every other ROM I installed all I could get was 3g no matter what I tried. The only solution was to fastboot flash back to stock, install the Sim, power it up, & let it "register"(send a text or make a call & also verify 4g works) with the network. I'm not saying you did the same thing I did, but the fix should be flashing back to stock.
*Copy your internal memory somewhwere before you reflash stock in case everything gets wiped.
*I'm on Verizon btw, so my experience may or may not apply to Sprint.
Sprint problems with 4g
I know this isn't my thread but I shall try anyway. I have the Sprint version of the g5 s plus. I have tried every way of flashing a rom that I can think of (all wipes rom then gapps magisk, magisk then gapps, rom and no gapps or magisk, etc.). I cannot manage to keep 4g after flashing. I have backed up my efs with twrp and tried restoring it. Nothing. I've used fastboot to flash nhlos erase modems1&2 flash fsg. I tried *#*#463whatever to turn it back on and nothing. I've checked all settings and tried all things I know of. Still nothing. The only way I can get/keep 4g is by using stock rooted which I hate. . Is this just a specific problem to my type of phone or is there something I'm missing? Is there a different firmware or modem I could use or something? Any thoughts or ideas would be great cause I'm stumped.
I have a G5S plus (xt1806) on sprint. Every rom I flash results in me not having LTE, and 3G cuts in and out unreliably. I have checked and my imei is still there. I have flashed the modems, and I have restored my efs backup to no avail. This has happened on every rom, no matter if I clean flash, dirty flash, I end up with the same result. Does anyone have any insight on this?

I had a similar issue on Verizon. When I got the phone I never inserted my new sim card & connected to the network before I unlocked the bl, flashed TWRP, custom ROM, etc. Every ROM I flashed had the same issue as you describe in your post.
Solution: I backed everything up to a pc & fastboot flashed back to stock & started over. Everything has been fine ever since.
***Keep that efs backup you made too - just in case you lose IMEI on your return to stock; efs restore should fix it.

Yea, I've tried reverting back to stock. I get back my service after restoring efs partition, but whenever I do it again, service is broken. I am at a loss.

Fwiw - I worked with another Sprint user a while back who could only get reliable service with the original firmware - that which came with the phone when purchased. Fortunately he had a bu of that and it was the only thing that worked. There is a thread about checking/fixing permissions on your persist partition that may help. Check it out - ya never know.

I really dislike how sprint deals with unlocked phones, they never play nice, I have had carrier specific issues with them in the past. If it wasn't for my grandfathered truly unlimited plan I would switch in a heartbeat.
And yea, I'll be sure to check that thread out, thanks!

I had the same problem. I made a thread about it and somebody gave the solution. See if it works for you. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g5s-plus/help/4g-to-t3829195

I had initially had this in my previous reply - Sprint has always been special - but I deleted it, should have left it in. I've heard many bad stories from Sprint users in the past, going back years. Just glad I always stayed away from them (they have no coverage in my neck of the woods anyway).
Good luck!
PS - the link in the above post has the instructions to set correct permissions on affected files in persist partition - they came from the thread I mentioned.

Hello! I have a moto x4 bought on CLARO (brazilian) carrier that comes with their official ROM (with non uninstallable apps, etc). It's the XT1900-6 model, with Android 8.0 Oreo installed. Thing is, the moto x4 was updated to Android 9 Pie, the retail devices have started receiving through OTA over a year ago. But as mine is carrier branded, it depends on them to release the updates (motorola gives to them and they do whatever they want, modify and release or do nothing) and they haven't lanuched the update. So I am tired of waiting and want to know if I can just "unbrand" my phone by installing an official retail firmware to receive the update (or just install the Android 9 firmware directly). Can I just get the retail firmware from lolinet and flash it following a guide? Or this is not possible at all?
I think the problem would be in getting the non-Brazilian ROM to access Claro, or whatever carrier you are using down there. But I don't know.

But the ROM would still be brazilian. Check out this firmware on lolinet.com on /firmware/moto/payton/official/RETBR/XT1900-6_PAYTON_RETBR_9.0_PPWS29.69-26-6_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip (As a new user, I cannot post links yet)
Ah, okay, I understand your question. But of course not having tried it I don't know the answer. Have you tried lmsa (see my sig) to see what if anything it offers you?

I have not, but I tried to check it out right now, your link is giving 404 not found error.
LOL yes, I screwed up. Thanks. Try it now.

I realized another possible prob - the ROM you have on there now is a (maybe) custom ROM made by Claro. Therefore some other ROM like the one you suggested, might not connect to Claro. Dunno...

Yes, I think that is the case. But the model is exactly the same as retail, I can't think of why a retail ROM wouldn't work. I think it would be like I had bought the phone in some random store and put a Claro sim card on it, it would work.
Okay, I tried LMSA, it says my ROM version is up to date. But this is expected, as it would check for updates in the Claro channel, which has none. I want to change to retail ROM so it would check for updates in retail channel.
Back in the day, even before Android, I did something like this with an old Nokia phone. Phones used to differ the model number not only by region, but also by carrier. I don't remember the procedure exactly, but I flashed a retail number over the carrier number and used a Nokia support software like the LMSA and it recognised the phone as retail. It had an update to be installed, so I did and the phone "turned" into retail version. Of course none of this applies for modern smartphones, but I think it may be possible to do something similar.
I hear you. Not having the Claro ROM to flash back if it doesn't work, you would be simply taking a chance. And if the new ROM won't connect to Claro, you're stuck. I realize the big reason I am being so cautious here is that in my reading I had recently encountered a Claro phone that now wouldn't work, but of course I forget where I read that and what was done to the phone - maybe a custom ROM? I'll do a search and see if I find it again. Nope, nothing in X4, so I don't know where I saw it.
EDIT: no, I find nothing. it was something about (I think) they were on a custom ROM and it would connect to Claro only and very slowly, or something like that.
EDIT2: I'm advising you not to flash unless you have a clear way back.
You're right, you're being cautious. This is exactly why I registered in the forum in the first place, so I could discuss the matter with people more experienced before I do anything stupid, maybe even found someone who had already done what I'm trying to do. I appreciate your help.

You're welcome! Yeah, caution is something too many folks don't have enough of and wind up with bricked phones. And even used, they're not cheap. Keep searching!!!
I will keep searching! Isn't there a way to just extract the current firmware I'm running to use as a backup?
Theoretically, maybe, but I wouldn't want to trust it(see modems comment below). You could
fastboot boot twrp.img
to temporarily get twrp and then boot to it, and then use it to do a backup, but you must make sure that you back it up to your SDcard since internal storage is often wiped during a flash. Then, theoretically if your new ROM doesn't work you could
fastboot boot twrp.img
back into twrp and restore that backup, but, again, I wouldn't want to trust it. I have used that to back up stock when flashing custom ROMs in the past, but I always had, and often used, RSDlite to flash a stock ROM to get me out of trouble. I believe RSDlite will work on an 8.x ROM on the X4 (I haven't tried it) but I know it will not recognize my phone at all now that it is at 9.0 RSDlite needs to be updated and I have no idea who is running that these days. One question I would have over the above is the particular modems being flashed - are they different in your Claro ROM, and if so, i do not believe they are backed up/replaced if you do a TWRP backup or restore.
"Okay, I tried LMSA, it says my ROM version is up to date."
Does it offer to download that ROM? If so, click the little down arrow and download it and see if you can access that and see if it looks like something that could be saved and flashed later. When I tried it a few days ago it looked like it was offering to download the same thing I had on. If so, that might give you a copy of the ROM you're on that you could flash to get back if need be - IF YOU CAN TRUST IT.
Nite. I'll check in tomorrow PM.
EDIT: of course I don't know if you can go from a partial Treble 9.0 back to a regular 8.x ... even if you have the stock ROM.

You're saying that if the upgrade fails, then I would need to downgrade back to 8.x and that could be a problem, I see.
About the modems being flashed, I don't know if I understand it right. I believe the modems are the same here, regardless if I bought in Claro or retail. What I'm saying is, usually here in Brazil, if you buy a retail or carrier phone, either way you can put any (Brazil) sim card and the carrier would work. Of course that if a phone doesn't support specific LTE frequency bands by hardware, then it wouldn't work, but then it wouldn't matter if it is retail or carrier.
lmsa apparently doesn't give me option to download firmware, or maybe I didn't check it out properly.

a) yes, might be a prob. Don't know.
b) if you know that then you can flash any Br ROM you want and connect to any carrier with it.
c) in lmsa, click flash (top tabs), then "go rescue". A box with fill-in-the-blanks pops up: fill in:
moto phone, moto X 4th gen, XT1900-6 (I believe it was in your case)
Hopefully some lines will appear and there will be a little down arrow thing on the right side saying download.
Click that and download the ROM. Once it is downloaded (DO NOT click rescue as that will wipe your phone), but go looking on your PC and see if you can find where it stored that download and grab/save it for yourself for possible future . I suspect it will be in c/users/<name>/local/motorola/"rom name" or something like that, not necessarily in local. It gives you part of the name so you could search your c:/ for some of that name to try to find it.
I wish I could be more specific as to its location but when I tried it with my phone this morning it said "This device is not supported" - I suspect that is because I just took the Nov 1 sec patch and there is no ROM out yet for it (lolinet doesn't have it yet - probably take another 2 or 3 weeks)(pretty lame imho, but it is what it is.
As to b) above if there are really that many folks using different carriers down there it seems that someone should know the answer to your question. Different website maybe, or post blatant "any one from Brazil here?" subject line in x4 , or search xda for Brazil. someone's gotta know! I don't believe LenAsh will swat you for a post like that if you link to this post and make clear your problem. A piece of the problem may be that the xda x4 forum seems very quiet . There may be 80 folks looking in but few are talking. Or, simply no experience in the matter and not wanting to encourage you to do something that will render your phone useless...
