Hi all,
After a long time I'm back on Android en back on XDA. I have no experience with current android rom and rooting. I would like to ask a few questions about my this. I've searched on the forum but I can't find any answers, I think because my questions are too basic for users that post questions here.
I would like to have stock android or another ROM (like LineageOS) with no Gapps or only Gapps that I want (for example YouTube of the gmail application).
Is rooting still necessary for installing another ROM.
Can I root and install the januari update from the ROM forum en stil update over the air?
Are there any other ROMS available other then the 1 ROM I see posted on the ROM forum.
Is LineageOS available for this Phone?
What are the disadvantages when updating to the januari ROM in ROM forum.
I hope you all can help me. My previous Phone was a Nokia 930 (Windows Mobile) and before that I had a Samsung Galaxy S2 which I rooted and installed a multitude of ROMs on.
With kind regards,
me

Hi
Currently there are no 3rd Party roms for the Nokia 8 as there is no bootloader unlock available, so,it cannot be rooted.

You need to unlock the bootloader to install a new ROM and there is no unlockable bootloader so neither installing a new ROM nor rooting the phone is possible atm. And that ROM you saw in forum is not a ROM it is flashable firmware.

Hi guys,
So this is my first android phone. I bought it in Shanghai, so it comes with bunch of chinese crapware preinstalled which is really annoying.
After doing some research, it appears that the only way for me to get rid of that is to root the phone (which I've never done before).
I have two goals in mind:
1) being able to delete all the crapware that came preinstalled with the phone
2) being able to install "market enabler" so that I can download "real" apps
I have downloaded Dr. Ketan's guide on how to root the SGN.
My phone's info:
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.ZSLA2
Baseband version: N7000XXLA4
So, from the guide it appears that I dont have a direct rootable ROM, and I need to flash (is that what its called?) it with Odin.
Now, I have downloaded the "SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip" file. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am guessing that this file is the "rooted factory ROM"...
However, later I came across this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 with bunch of [stock ROMs].
My goal is to have "normal/factory/oem/stock/whatever you call it" ROM, with SuperUser access aka root.
So, the question is - should I stick with the guide and use "SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip" ROM or should I flash it with one of the ROMs from the [stock roms] thread?
Cheers!

You can do either
KJ1_factoryfs if pre rooted ROM, you won't need to root it after downgrading
While if you downgrade any rootable ROM from stock ROM thread you have mentioned, you have to root it.

BTW,
do I need to install CWM? I am not planning on installing other ROMs or anything like that... just want to wait for the official release of ICS, that's all.
Not compulsory.
You can also purchase mobile odin pro, if you want to update rom to latest version.
Or u can use as it is. But kj1 or any older rom are not tuned as newer one, may experience battery drainage, leg etc, but if u r satisfied, thn you can keep it till ics.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this question had been asked many times before but I cannot find the answer.
I have a Galaxy Note from Telus (model I-717D) and I want to root and flash custom rom on it. The problem is I'm not sure if the method by dr.ketan will work for my carrier branded phone :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
And one last question, will custom roms in Android Dev section work on my note ? Or do they only work for the international version GT-N7000 ?
Many thanks.

Your NOTE is not compatible with anything here in this forum. You need to search the ATT NOTE Thread as your device is related to that device.
DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING FROM HERE OR YOU WILL KILL YOUR DEVICE!!! This includes the Rooting Procedure, etc...

Please post in the correct forum, this is for the international note, you want the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717
hy guys, I received my galaxy note last month, it is an italian version no-brand with LB1 GB. I looked on the internet and I found that version isn't directly rootable. I want to personalise my note and try some cooked roms I saw here on forum. What do you recomand to me?
- wait for the official ics release for my country and then root it? (italian one wasn't released yet)
- force and directly up from lb1 (stock italy) to lpy (german official)
- downgrade from lb1 to kka (or similar) and then root it.
Need some help because I'm a bit confused and I don't want to brick my new phone.
Ps: this is my first android phone, before of this I had only symbian (to make you understand my level of androisation...)
1. Stay on GB
2. look at development section for dr ketans guide on rooting your phone.
3. And may the lord of bricks not cast a glance on you
Zapped through server hops to XDA forums
You can also customize your device without rooting.
Try Go launcher, launcher pro etc....
There is plenty of options to customized your device.
Google will help you find them.....
thanks for your answers. I think I will follow the dr ketan's guide and try to downgrade to a directly rootable version. I will upgrade this post with my experience
I successufully downgraded using dr ketan's guide - with that version (KJ) I found a bug, my keyboard didn't work (for writing messages for example)
I upgraded my phone to LB2 using odin and installed ics 4.0.4 of CyanogenMod nightly version. it's ok now, I only miss the applications of the S-pen
thanks for your help!
Hi, I need help understanding ROM upgrading: I have a galaxy ACE S5830L with Gingerbread 2.3.4 (stock ROM) version S5830LUBKPB and reading thru the forums I saw that I can upgrade to another ROM (from different carrier) as long as it's made for the same phone S5830L. So I found on sammobile website a ROM from another carrier (for S5830L) Gingerbread 2.3.6 but with a version S5830LUBKPA.
The only difference I can see is the last letter on the version. So the question is can I install this ROM without messing up the phone. I have done it before with blackberry's but this will be my first with android and I don't want to brick the phone as it is my main phone.
Sorry for my english and TIA.

I'm not sure if its okay to flash a ROM with a different letter.
can't you find any stock ROM that's for your device specifically?
development thread section is for posting software development that you have created.
for help and questions, post in the Questions and Answers section

You can flash any firmware for 5830 and 5830L as they have the same hardware. Just remember to flash the modem of your region if you experience connectivity issues.
Hi guys, i've just bought a Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070 and I'm a little confused. My previous phone was a Galaxy Ace S5830i, I had that phone rooted (but it was too easy, just flash a .zip file) and with a custom rom.
So I have some questions:
1) For now I just want to root my new phone but the methods that I found here are not too clear to me. I first saw this method, but my firmware is not there. My phone came with I9070UBLI1 (2.3.6 GB). So i can't root my phone? my kernel isn't even in sammobile.com/firmwares
2) I want to make a backup just in case before rooting, so, what recovery should I use with this phone? cwm? this? or which one?
3) What is "binary counter"? In galaxy ace that wasn't present.
4) I saw that in samsungfirmwares site there are some 4.1.2 kernels, but they are for Rusia. I'm from Chile. So can I flash the russian kernel? will I loose my signal, 3G or something? Do you recommend upgrade to JB? with stock russian or a custom rom?
5) Do you recommend a custom kernel? which one? This looks nice
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you can help me with those questions (numering your answers just like i did with my questions), I just want to enjoy a lot my new phone. :good:

Since you say that you are used to xda, i don't see any reasonable explanation for the creation of this thread!

I read the forums, but I'm still confused, for example, for rooting, in the thread that I linked in 1) there isn't the firmware that came with my phone, so I went to here, there isn't neither, then I read this post, but to do that I need dowload my phone's firmware, but the one that came with my phone there isn't in samsungfirmares web page, so I suppose I can flash anyone for Chile (my country), there are 2, but idk if they will work, so, if I'm going to take that risk I need to make a backup first, but idk what recovery I should use.
I have a mental bootloop

I bought my phone in January.
Then became member of xda in january.
Flashed russian jb all releases as they released in February.
Rooted my phone in same month.
Started using kernels in same month.
Started tweaking in same month.
And now i am really happy with my phone's performance.
As i was new to android and xda i have done all this because i was not worried about my warranty.
In short, go ahead don't think so much.
