Official Updates? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I used this method to update to Oreo early - http://drippler.com/drip/official-sa...pass-safetynet
do I have to downgrade back to stock firmware/os to be able to get updates normally or will it just update over this one?

Thank you for the help.

Firmware.
As for the CSC youll need to find OUT what yours is
but it should work the same as the guide you followed...
GLW is the Canadian CSC from what I see here.
di you remember where you got the phone or who the providor was?

You see, on BB110 people made us exe files where you plug the phone in click and it's automated. Android seems to be a lot different. What is a CSC and GLW? I really have no clue. I know I shouldn't have done this if I wasn't ready for it, but, I wanted to have the latest stuff.
keeps logging me out everytime I try and download the firmware. YAY. Delays and setback piss me right off.

Figured out my issue, How do I flash this patch/file/whatever it is. Over the current one?
EDIT: # hours to download unless I fork over 20 dollars. YAY, MORE BLOODY WAITING.

Anywhere Other than sam mobile I can get the GLW file from. Sam mobile is super super slow (4 hours), Unless I hand over 20 dollars.

What do I enter for Region (I put Canada but it doesnt work)
PDA
CSC and Phone
also, is N950WVLU1AQH7 what I want. When I flashed the beta firmware, it changed my model number to a USA one.

I think that's where you enter CSC code but it's been a while since I used it. A quick search online should help. CSC is Consumer Software Customization, basically a folder in the software that controls/sets specific features and settings for your region/carrier.
No worries if you flashed different firmware that changed your model number. When you flash stock it will change it back. U.S. and Canada Note 8s are essentially the same at a hardware level.

Grab your region's version, then flash via Odin.
I find it easier to not flash the latest version, but to an older version (4.1.1) just to make it feel "Stock-ier".

I would say yes, here's the instructions...
Extract (unzip) the firmware file
Download Odin v3.09
Extract Odin ZIP file
Open Odin v.3.09
Reboot Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait few minutes

Yeah I've seen and tried those, they don't work. I'm not sure why, but the Canadian "W" version is not listed and never has been... It's been available in Canada for about 6 months now. If I can't flash a normal SM-T705 firmware, I'll probably sell the tablet and get a Nexus 9, because hell will freeze over before any of our Big 3 release an update...

Still waiting on root to change the CSC. I have found a Chinese forum that has successfully rooted the 9600, but I'm still waiting on the files to download.
Apparently the only way to really change a CSC (especially from a different model) is to have root and to place the files. I'm fairly certain Volte can be enabled then. It seems all of that info is in the CSC files. Still, other than Volte, everything else is working perfectly even with stock.

No, it is a modded Odin file. After using Crom (which is required for bootloader unlock) it accepts modified Odin files via Comsey Odin. Nobody has made a twrp yet though unfortunately.
I'm sure I get band 13 as it is pretty much my only option where I live. Again though, you can't know for sure what band you're on without root as far as I know.

The file is located at: Here
You have to join the site to be able to download, but there is a workaround using a chrome extention: Here
I was finally able to download the file and everything (2.1 GB) and it definitely looks legit. You basically Odin the China rom so that you can use the Crom (bootloader unlock) app. Then just sign out of your Samsung and Google accounts, reboot into Download, Load the modded AP file and flash. It has screenshots included as well. It is apparently rooted with Magisk (Preinstalled) and there are screenshots showing Xposed working as well.
All of the instructions are in Chinese, so I just cut and paste everything into Google translate and got a rough translation. I'll try my best to upload the downloaded file to Mega or somewhere, but the only internet that I have right now is Mobile. I am not at home right now, so I can't give it a try (Plus I'm a little nervous!!! haha). So if anyone wants to give it a go, please let us know how it goes. The guy that uploaded it has been a member of that site for a long time now and has a reputation on the site. I'm guessing the site is like the Chinese version of XDA or something.

N00B question, N960W running Rogers bloat, is there a generic universal FW?

I just got my hands on a Note 9 that was bought from Rogers and therefore has the Rogers rom.
I can use ADB or PDP to remove the bloat, but for the sake of simplicity, I would much rather just use a standard universal rom. I remember being able to do this when I had my Note 7 but its been a while and I'm forgetting the process. I remember using Odin lol.
Any advice and help is greatly appteciated! Also, I tried searching but XDA search NEVER seems to show results, EVER.

I'm almost certain the SM-N960U1 firmware will work on your phone.
However, you may lose some carrier-specific functionality (WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM/etc....) by doing so.
I have no direct knowledge of Rogers, but, there is a dedicated Canadian Note 9 thread you may want to take a look at before proceeding:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...te-9-canadian-thread-rumours-pricing-t3826820
EDIT:
@imatts
Taking a look at this this site (Updato),it looks like there may be Canadian-specific unlocked/SIM-Free (SM-N960W) firmware:
https://updato.com/firmware-archive...&rpp=15&r=SPC,XAC&order=date&dir=desc&exact=1
Again,my knowledge of Canadian versions & carriers is non-existent,so,please take a look in the thread I linked above for guidance.

Thank you. Another noob question (if anyone else is reading this, feel free to also help!)
I see a ton of random characters after the N960W, what do they mean? How do I know which one to choose, and also, whats the difference between the XAC and SPC versions?

I can help you there. I wrote a guide to decode the build number. It was written for the N960U, but still applies to the N960W.
---------- Post added at 10:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 PM ----------
You can tell what version of Android it is just by the build number. You can also tell if each update just contains the updated security patch, or if new features were added or updated.*
The first character (S or U) tells you if it's a security patch or a feature update. S = Security Patch and U = Feature Update (features added or changed)
The second character (a number) tells you bootloader version. This is important to know when upgrading and downgrading OS versions. You can NOT downgrade the bootloader. 1 = Bootloader V1, 2 = Bootloader v2, etc...*
The third character tells you the Android version. This is different for each Galaxy device. A is the Android version that device 2as released with. (For the Note 9 A=Oreo; C=Pie) B will likely be newer versions of Oreo, possibly with an updated bootloader. Z is for official Samsung BETA program builds.*
The fourth character is the year of the build (R=2018, S=2019). This is the same across all Galaxy devices.
The fifth character is the month of the build. This does not indicate what security patch it contains, only what month it was built. (A=January, B=February). Again, same across all Galaxy Devices.*
The sixth character is just the sequence of builds that month (1-9, then A-Z)
SO
S - Security Patch
1 - Bootloader V1

all canadian firmwares I've seen are identical. the trick would be to change your sales code to XAC(unbranded Canadian region code). and just flashing the XAC firmware wont do squat as it still contains all carriers because its multi csc and your sim card will still end up being detected and get its carriers bloat. (SPC = PC mobile , president's choice? lol)
i have no experiance with flashing u1 on a W.
but if it works, loosing csc specific features and other stuff might not be worth it in the end just to debloat.

You may be right. I honestly haven't researched that part of the build number.
Edit:. It appears that's correct. I can find a list of region codes, but ironically none of them include US region codes. But that has to be the region code.
The N60U1 firmware all show a region code of UE, and the carrier branded N960U show a region code of SQ.
Thanks for the info!!

I can help you there. I wrote a guide to decode the build number. It was written for the N960U, but still applies to the N960W.

Dude I am so thankful that you took the time to break this down for me, and you have helped me dramatically. Makes perfect sense, and I've gone ahead and downloaded the proper fw!
I downloaded the XAC version. It says 4hrs til complete though -_-

what i hate about samsung naming conventions is that they have at least 3 variation of them:
-device build identification (like on the oem box)
-firmware build identification
-csc build identification
and the damn country code is all diferent even if its all from the same place.

Yeah, and it doesn't make sense. How is UE or SQ United States? Or North America? Or whatever region it represents? Hell, XX is Europe. Wouldn't EU make more sense?

Heyyyy lol, so I used Odin (3.12.3) and I was expecting ti wait a long time for the fw to flash, but when I pressed start, it showed green, passed, succeeded and rebooted into the setup I had previously, all within a few seconds.
Do you (or anyone reading) know why??
I was hoping to completely reset my phone and restore to the stock FW.

not sure what you dled but firmwares are to be unzipped and odin slots filles with:
BL
AP
CP
CSC
in your case flashing only csc.md5 should work.
you need to use odin 3.13.1
but this is besides my point. all canadian firmware contain all carriers. so you'll just end up with a reset phone full of bloat anyways.
edit:
so what carrier is your sim card from?

Question Flash T-Mobile firmware on unlocked S21 ultra

I'll admit I'm a noob, but I was wondering if there were guides or a way to flash the official T-Mobile carrier firmware on an unlocked s21 ultra by chance? If anyone can point me in the right direction please. Thank you and sorry if it's a dumb question.

The SM-G998U1 is Multi-CSC Device (OYN). Change the CSC to TMO by entering the following code on the TouchPad. *#272*YOURIMEINUMBER# Select TMO then install.

If that's the case you can download Tmobile firmware and flash to your device.
downloading/flashing Tmobile firmware to S20Ultra unlocked
I really want Tmobile's advanced messaging feature back. I downloaded Frija (to download the firmware images) My assumption is that since I have model number SM-G988U1 and want to flash tmobile's firmware I need to use SM-G988U with CSC as TMB to download the correct firmware. Is this...

Once last question, forgive my ignorance. Once I flash from the unlocked version to the T-Mobile branded firmware, will I need to manually flash each update that comes out for T-Mobile do you know?

You SHOULD receive Tmobile updates once you're on Tmobile firmware and network but I don't think it's something that can be guaranteed. Your Primary CSC can't be changed to TMO and therin lies the problem. In the last couple of years Samsung has complicated firmware and CSC transitions on it's numerous array of devices. Lots of potential users lean to an unlocked device thinking they'll have more freedom of choice but it won't always end up as a benefit. I always recommend buying your service provider's device for full functionality but it doesn't always work out since some users tend to swap service provider's on a regular basis.
I'm on T-mobile's network, month to month, no long term commitment which adds flexibility but even being on their network I didn't aquire their Branded Device. I have the Hong Kong SM-G9980 variant. I couldn't care less about 5G, to me it's the biggest marketing scam since light beer. The only other feature I lose is Carrier Aggregation which much like 5G enables faster download speeds. I can easily have my laptop handle this and transfer files or data to my device. So there's no carrier bloatware, the bootloader is unlocked, I get updates from Samsung typically sooner than US devices and still have Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE via Tmobile. Most users don't do much research to define which device is best suited for their needs. "I got this great deal on an S21 Ultra but..." We can point the finger at Samsung as well, way too many variants leads to a lot of problems.

I downloaded the firmware from SamMobile and Odin then flashed it. I had the unlocked version I purchased from Samsung directly. when selecting the csc portion but it still shows the xaa portion as well. Not sure if I did it wrong but seems to be working for me. Putting it in download mode requires holding volume up/down and power. Every site I visited told the wrong directions
