unable to save static wifi configuration - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just came across the most bizarre problem on my Fire 7 (5.4.0).
I need to manually configure an open wifi, but it seems it is impossible.
Whenever I open the "advanced" configuration, I can enter ip, gateway, dns etc all without problem but the "save"-button is greyed out and I cannot save the configuration I entered.
A little googling provided two workarounds:
Some suggest filling in all the fields, but this does not do the trick.
And then there is the suggestion to enter the wifi-password again to make the "save"-button appear. This I cannot do as it is an open network without any password.
So how can I make the "save"-button functional when manually configuring an open wifi-network?
I can do that on my phone and on my other tablet (both running kitkat) but not on my new Fire 7 it appears...
Any help is greatly appreciated.

[Q] Naming the nook device / hostname?

Does anybody know how to change the name of the Nook Color? In order to use an application in Citrix, it needs to have a specific name, and I can't figure out how to change it.
I've seen various ideas, such as:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668300
which says to change the /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
I've done so, but disconnecting and reconnecting the wifi with the desired name for the NC in the above file does not work; the name stays the same. For me, the name is ROID7047BCFB-EB96-44.
How does the android/linux OS figure out a name for the NC, and how can I change it?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Update:
pinging ROID7047BCFB-EB96-44 works, as does pinging NEWHOSTNAME (what I want my NC to be called), both give the same IP address. However, my Citrix receiver still recognizes me as ROID* and boots me off.
Maybe this is some kind of DNS issue, or how do I get rid of the ROID* name and get my device to be recognized only by NEWHOSTNAME?
I suppose I can ask the Citrix/I.T. administrators to give me access on my NC (which they probably won't support doing), or I can rename my NC to something that already has access in Citrix.
It really shouldn't be that hard to name your NC, as you can any computing device.
Do I have to go into userinit.sh to set localhost to NEWHOSTNAME, or edit the init.rc file, or edit the .IMG on the ROM (it's been a while since I played around with unix, and so I'm pretty new to this stuff)?
Nook Color Device ID / Hostname
Didn't want to start a new thread on this topic...
Our network admin sees unknown devices as a security threat (or annoyance) to his network. He therefore requires a unique hostname to obtain a DHCP lease.
A hostname of "localhost" (the NC default), is seen as blank by the server. The Nook Color (and many other Android devices) must be rooted and modified to gain access.
Several posts recommend changing net.hostname. This did not work for me. Changing /proc/sys/kernel/hostname, however, would work.
For a single instance, use the following from a root prompt. THEN TURN OFF AND TURN ON WIFI to request a new DHCP lease.
# echo NEWHOSTNAME > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
EDIT: Removed paragraph about setting at boot until I figure it out.
To set HOSTNAME / Device ID at boot
Thanks to JoshMiers for instructions on persistent settings following a reboot...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901791
To set the HOSTNAME at boot (on rooted stock eclair, anyway)...
1. Create (via adb or RootExplorer) file /data/boot_complete_hook.sh
2. Add the following lines via a text editor (on Windows use Notepad++):
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
#
## Set hostname/deviceID
#
echo yourchosenhostname > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
3. At root prompt, change properties of new file
Code:
#chmod 755 /data/boot_complete_hook.sh
At root prompt, test to see if it works by executing
Code:
#/data/boot_complete_hook.sh
#cat /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
I did not need to reset the wireless after booting. If necessary, code could be added to the file to renew the DHCP lease or reset the wireless (tiwlan0).
I did have difficulty using ADB to do this, as Josh describes, and did not take time to debug. Instead, I used RootExplorer and Terminal to do it all directly on the NC.

Well, I can use the setprop net.hostname command to set the device hostname. However, the Citrix application takes the "clientname" from the android_id field in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, regardless of the hostname. So, the Citrix application sees the device as "ROID"+android_id. I can't figure out how to get rid of the "ROID" part so I can make the device "clientname" to show as whatever is desired (after changing the android_id). Tried to put in a backspace character in the field, as "\b" to get rid of the "ROID" part, but that didn't work. Oh well.

[Q] Proxy Settings ICS

where the hell are the proxy settings hidden in ICS,
I have tried the following: settings...wifi connection long tap.....pop up window ....modify connection...show advanced option....
nothing happens
tried connected and unconnected
used a proxy setting software form the market.......... no success at all
need this urgently to connect to a corporate network..
PS : I have original firmware per update from samsung, no root
------------------------------
ICS really screws me up.....high battery drain, many hangs....forced closes..
my home screens need always some time to load when I come back from an application.
streaming videos are stuttering........my USB/OTG connections won't work or work only sometimes, the WIFI is connecting and disconnecting all the time now the proxy problem
Settings - Wi-Fi - Long klick on your network - "Modify network config" - tick "Show advanced options" checkbox
I hope you do know that Android does not support Proxy, In samsung Models the stock phone browser can be configured to run with Proxy settings, but none of your apps will work with Proxy on a wi-fi network.
This is a reported problem, the thread can be found as below
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17231
There are several other similar complains, but google at present does not seem to be interested to add proxy support
i'm using AutoProxy app from market. Working both on ICS and GB rom
on GB I could set the proxy in andvanced WIFI settings and it worked perfectly.
I am using Junos Pulse to set up the VPN, this worked fine with my SG2 and my Note.
Now on ICS I cannot get inot the ....advanced settings.... as I have mentioned in my post I know where this normally is to find and I tried to check this option after long pressing the particular WIFI spot, it appears and I check it but nothing happens........
Yes, I know that android has a problem with proxy, thats why I am using JUNOS PULSE . it is an app from Juniper Networks (firewall hardware manufacturer) and it worked fine, but I have to set the proxy IP and Port manually.
Again, I know where those settings normally are, but they stay grey and cannot be used.
So I'd like to ask someone here to verify my finding. Again, can s.o just go to WIFI....long tap your connection, then check advanced settings. Then please control, if this feature is available after saving. In my case it is not...............
thanks in advance for the support
and , of course Auto proxy is not of any use for my problem, also sorry but the stock browsers can never be set up for proxy. In Android only the Connection (in this case the WIFI) can be set up to talk to an fixed IP on a fixed port.
May be it helps if I describe what Junos Pulse is doing: Junos Puls is connecting to the server , establishes a VPN and gives your devise a new IP(internal) and catches the traffic and routes it to the proxy. But this proxy IP and port you have to publish first. This is normally done in Android by setting the advanced settings in the appropriate connection to the proxy IP and Port. Hope this helps
Problem solved. It was a font proplem. I had installed a customized font this caused th proxy settings to be grey. changed the font.
Now I can edit the proxy ip and port.
And my WIFI is working fine on our proxy through the VPN with Junos Pulse
Hey
Sorry for the noobness but I've searched all over for this and I can't find a decent tutorial for this...
I want to connect to my company wifi but it's unfortunately by proxys... I have friends there that have access but they are on 2.3.3 ICS don't seem to get connect.
Can anyone give some light on what you guys configure your proxys manually. I don't know the machine name and all those steps that are needed on the advance settings...
Please and thanks
Conection proxy server
I have the same problem. In a galaxy note 10.1 i can't conect a proxy server. I have set number of port and name of anfitrion Android i can't connect. Can i help me?

Cannot modify network settings

Am I missing a simple thing?
I have a stock 4X HD running on original 4.1.2 non-rooted. As per the instructions I see in the internet, I can input custom DNS settings and select a static IP using the "modify network" option if you long press the current wifi connection you have. However, once I select "Advanced options" all fields for custom DNS and static IP is grayed out. I can't even save.
I tried this approach on another non-rooted android tablet and seems working. Any help please?
Thanks!

[Q] Which CM version does restricted profile actually work in?

I want to setup a HP Touchpad which supports restricted profiles (aka kids mode) so I can have my kids use the TouchPad but only give them access to a few apps and games I select and barring them from other apps, changing system settings, etc..
I just tried updating my TouchPad to JC's CM11 (cm-11-20140625-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip), I was successful but restricted profiles don't seem to work in it. Details are below in case anyone wants to know.
I don't really care which CM version I install on the TouchPad, I just want one where restricted profiles work. If there's anyone out there who has used this specific feature successfully on their TouchPad, please let me know what ROM version you are using. Thanks!
My CM11 experience with restricted profiles:
When to Users, Add Restricted Profile. Did the Set Up Profile now and got the Welcome to CyanogenMod Wizard for the new profile, Select English, Google account setup - Select Skip, Setup your CyanogenMod account - Select Skip, Location Setting - nothing selected, Setup is complete - Select Finish and then got the message Unfortunately, CyanogenMod Account has Stopped. Then I got a Black Desktop. Back, Home, Windows button bar at bottom, Status bar shows Wifi, battery, time, the apps I selected to give that profile access to was not shown. I consistently get Unfortunately, System UI has stopped messages as well.

Use your phone's VPN in your computer without root.

I have seen a lot of people wondering about how to use your phone's vpn in pc. If you're one of them, than keep reading.
To do this you do not need root
Works on any computer OS
Works on home wifi or data hotspot
When your PC is connected with your WiFi or hotspot, it's sends all the request directly, regardless of your phone's vpn, wheather it is on or off. When you turn on the phone's VPN, all the traffic from your phone goes through the VPN, and we have to divert your PC's traffic through the same route.
There are a lot of different ways to do this, but we will use proxy method.
Download an app called proxy server (<1MB), you can find it in PlayStore or here on XDA. Or any other app would do, it just needs to have the capability to create a proxy server.
So (for Proxy server app) all you have to do is (first time setup)-
Open the app.
Click on the add button at the top, give it a name.
Remember the port and go back.
On the dialogue, click save.
Click on Info at the top, note the wifi ip, go back.
Click on Start at the top to start the server.
Go to PC's browser (or network proxy, if you want to tunnel everything) settings.
Put the proxy server ip (the wifi ip noted earlier) and the port.
Turn on your phone's VPN
Enjoy :good:
If you're using hotspot, go to pc's network settings or ipconfig (google if you don't know how) to find out the gateway, that will be your proxyserver ip.
Just in case it seems to be a lot of steps, know that, you only have to setup once, after that its pretty much start and stop on both your phone and PC. I have an addon installed in my browser (proxy toggle) so basically it's a single-click step.
I'm no scientist, so I don't know all the billions of methods to do this, but this is just a good old method that's going unnoticed somehow. I'm just trying to help people here by sharing it here. If you already knew it, good for you. If you didn't, congratulations and good luck.

I think it'd be better if you go watch a video on YouTube, explaining "what is a vpn" . If I try to explain you here, chances are you're going to get confused even more.

Start VPN in phone
Start proxyserver app in phone
Set the proxy IP and port in your PC browser
It's a 3 step process. If you still need help, you should ask more specifically, a generic "more explanation needed" doesn't pin point where should I start.
