Substratum themes won't survive reboot after Oreo update - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi, so I updated my Note8 to Oreo today, installed Andromeda, followed the instructions for Swift Black, and I get them to install, but if I reboot the phone, the theme does not stick. I then have to go in, remove the themes, reboot, and do it again.
Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

And the theme doesn't apply right. Same issue for me.

I made a mistake updating to Oreo, preferred Substratum more when I was on Nougat.

Yes it was much better on nougat. It seems we have to be connected to a PC every time to start it on Oreo.

I'll just reminisce, top two Substratum themes for me were Wings and also Swift for Samsung.

I've been on Oreo for a while and unfortunately this is an issue that's been persisting for months. I gave up on
Substratum because as said before you will absolutely need to enable Andromeda EVERY time you reboot your phone and need to run Substratum. That's if the overlays even stuck in the first place. I've been using ThemeGalaxy and IMO its better than Substratum. The changes stick and you can make them custom to how you want it and the theme is applied fro,m the Theme store on the device so it doesn't matter how many times you reboot. Give it a try, i hope it helps i know just how frustrating using Substratum can be.

Well it does apply and work well, until I reboot the phone. If I understand correctly, you have to activate Andromeda every time you reboot, but Substratum will not reapply the theme after that and I have to remove the theme, reboot, apply the theme, reboot, enable the theme. PITA is you ask me.

Thanks! I'll check that out

I was having the same issue. I was loving substratum on nougat now on Oreo they never stick. My nav buttons constantly go back to the stock Samsung ones and under substratum it tells me the nav bar theme is active and installed. I have to manually connect it to a computer just to uninstall and then reinstall every single time. I'm just gonna stick to Samsung theme store

I got root. So Andromeda is not needed. Just the themes are not applying correctly. And appears buggy for me. And yes I'm using Oreo Samsung compatible themes

I've been using ThemeGalaxy now and it works pretty well. A little less 3rd party app support, but that should grow. Overall, I'm happy to have themes back again!

Glad to hear it, i still use Substratum for overlays with a few things here and there but ultimately i use ThemeGalaxy. Hopefully Substratum will start to work better on Samsung devices running Oreo in near updates.

That was my experience--basically, the themes would not stick on reboot even though I was not updating apps or re-applying themes. The System UI themes would stick, but not the apps. They all went back to default. I tried this numerous times and it didn't work...
Until this morning. The only change I did was I made sure that, to begin with, I was using the default Samsung theme from their theme store. Once I did that, it started working better. So basically...
Uninstall all overlays, reboot;
Make sure you are using Samsung default theme.
I deleted other themes I downloaded (Material_Black in my case);
Reboot;
Select overlays and choose "Install and Enable". Reboot.
Select overlays and choose "Enable selected". After a couple of secs the Substratum app updates its own theme.
Reboot.
In the past, after the last step, the app themes go back to default. Today, I rebooted 3-4 times and everything stick. I'm not really sure whether it was the Samsung default theme thing or just pure lucky configuration at the time. I just thought I'd share.
Going forward, my pain is when I update apps, I have to connect my PC and re-apply overlays. This is not so bad for me because:
I update apps manually weekly
The new Substratum experience does not require me to acknowledge install and uninstall of each overlay--It's automatic which I prefer.
I'll check out ThemeGalaxy though. That looks interesting.

Which theme are you using? I gave Substratum another try and I am able to get them to stick now, but nothing is theming the Quick Settings or Notification area.

Huh, that's what I'm using too. Android System will theme, but System UI, System UI QS Tile Icons, and System UI Status Bar Icons will not theme, they stay orange in Substratum and never enable.

There's a Telegram channel for Swift Themes. I can't link to it because I am new here. You can find it at the bottom of the Googl Play store link for Swift Black.
They have links to alpha/beta builds of Substratum. I followed the directions on their and am now running a working copy of Swift Black on my Note 8. Took me hours to figure this out hope it helps someone.

Material Dark from N5 -> N6 (no success)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/themes-apps/theme-t2939926
For the Nexus 5 there are system apk's that replaces the ugly Material Light.
I did some trial and error, hoping it would work on my Nexus 6.
Trial - Error
Manually replaced - Settings.apk.
Unfortunately after a reboot the settings icon was gone. The settings app could not be started.
Replacing settings.apk with the original did not bring back the settings icon in app drawer.
Restoring of the system from TWRP-recovery was necessary.
Interested in this as well. I actually like the look of material dark. Hopefully we'll be able to have this while using stock.

Till now I have seen several "dark-apk's" from other devices and tried them on my Nexus 6 (no success).
The only Material Dark for Nexus 6 that works on stock N6 is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/themes-apps/appblack-google-launcher-black-t3017375
But an update of the Google launcher make things light again.
So I blocked the Google app from updating.
Doesn't post 2 of the rro/layers XDA thread say that layers would be baked into the next android update? I'm assuming they meant android 5.1. Does this mean we can theme our device through the layers app now?

Hello.
I have a rooted Nexus 6p and I installed today Subtratum Theme Engine with the theme of Deity.
Because I do not like (dark text, sometimes illegible on dark background), I uninstalled it. It unfortunately remains the dark background in all applications (settings, wattsapp, contacts, messages, etc ...).
How can I restore the original settings?
Thank you.

You will get way way way way more help in the Substratum thread where the devs and many themers hang out.
This thread was asking for Substratum compatible ROMs
edit - you need the TBO theme compatible apps to solve the white on white issue with GMail and other Google apps that have hardcoded colors..

There is a fix to this. Go to accessibility settings and turn on high contrast text. Everything would be read able. I reverted to stock ui because the text looked awful, readable but awful.
Substratum works fine with Pure Nexus.

Overlay Thread - Verizon s8+

For those who have not headed over to the overlay post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/themes/substratum-inversion-ui-overlay-overlays-t3604341
There are some cool things going on with themes and overlays. Some non-rooted methods are allowing us to change system icons, colors etc. Not eveything has been found yet so please be patient..
Here are a few of my additions. I do not take credit for making any of these other than changing the colors. A lot of these have been made by people in the original post and if you like their work please post up a thanks or donate to them.
When installing, pay attention to the package name if you wish to uninstall. Uninstall via app manager.

Can I ask what Samsung theme your using?
red neon in samsung store
Here is a lil easier to read notifications, make them red..
Also make sure to re apply these apks after any theme application or updates.
ars0n i LOVE the red work you've done and REALLY wanna put it on my phone...but the files you've posted...ive installed and tried to use before and once rebooted..the only thing that would show up is the tab to access the edge screen and i wasnt even able to use that..my point in this ramble...is there something im doing wrong? do you need to be on the stock (Out of the box theme) in order to use these?
try the red neon theme, you should be able to download 1 0 min trial.
Can I ask if you have any other kind of theme or oer lays installed? Navbar or status bar mods/apks?
I am on stock verizon rom that came with phone. And on the newest update and the overlays still work (had to reinstall).
I'm on stock Verizon ROM. And no other mods installed. Was just hoping to get this to work without having to factory data reset again if it doesn't...
Do one at a time for me if you can and let me know.. I am using the verizon framework for the s8+ but I am also on the newest update, so not sure if that matters or not.
I only use the newest syustemui RED ON RED with the blackred in call UI, just 2 apks plus the neon red theme. Install the theme first, then do the apks and reboot and let me know!
Ok. I am on the latest update as well. I think where I went wrong easier installed all the files you posted and also didn't have the theme installed
Is the theme which made your status bar icons red or was it one if the overlays?
the system icons and red nav apk should do it. The battery is also red now.

Red nav on home screen has to be done by enabling immersive mode.
For the red batt, try the second system APK i posted a few posts down.

Black notifications white text

Has anyone found a way to get white text with black notifications without root? Every theme I try has white text for stock apps, but all 3rd party apps still have the hard to read grey text. Thanks
This has been discussed in the themes and mods section, if you do not find something there, most probably there is nothing available yet

Question OneUI 4 (Release Version) Theming Not Working

Has anyone encountered an issue with OneUI theming after installing the official release?
I am unable to change my color palette. I had a custom theme installed (non-rooted) and it says I need to load the default theme. When I do so, nothing appears to happen and when I go to the theming section, the screen is blank and I just get the spinning animation.
The rom seems buggy to me
Every reboot dpi shift to wonky wonky large icons and text have to set again
Give it some time about your issue too

That’s actually the first thing I tried with the themes app no dice. Also, everytime I go check for themes on the Galaxy Store, I get an error message.
Something‘s off with this ROM. I guess I’ll wait. It’s not quite what I was expecting.
I have kind of a similar issue. I am able to change the color palette in settings > wallpaper and style.
However when creating my own theme in Theme Park, when I pick red for my main color and style, the Theme Park app crashes...
Your browser is not able to display this video.
Update: just went into ADB and re-installed the theme service, etc. Worked like a charm. All good now! Thanks everyone for weighing in.
