P20 Pro - does it have a HDR display or not? - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

On Huawei page or anywhere else I can find if the P20Pro really does not have an HDR Display like the mate 10 pro does.
Strange thing is that Netflix shows HDR symbol but Youtube and Amazon Video are not offering HDR
Does anyone know from first hand if Youtube HDR can work with P20Pro. I mean if Netflix recognizes it as available it should also work with YouTube.
By the way...Youtube vanced in non root version also does not work for HDR.

Youtube vanced worked for me after enabling software or hardware HDR.

No netflix HDR here
Not even HD logo showing
09 model firmware 103

Really strange. Seems only difference is that you have the single SIM Version and I the dual SIM one.
In any case I have it right in front of me HDR Logo in Netflix ever since I upped the plan

@ jaju123
can you tell me which version of youtube vanced and which settings exactly you changed cause for me HDR is not working in YOutube vanced 13.12.60 Build 1.18.30
No matter if I enable "VP9 codec" or set "HDR full brightness" ....there is no option for HDR showing up in test videos.
P.S what do you mean with software /hardware HDR, where can I change that?

@ jaju123
ah found it. Had to tap "about" inside the vanced settings a few times to bring up the device spoofing options under codec. Was now able to select S8+ or Pixel 2 and now HDR video actually offer the the HDR option. Just like Netflix.
So I am beginning to guess the display is HDR 10 bit after all. Same as Mate 10 Pro.

Make sure you're in FHD+ mode, and not smart mode. That seems to cause several issues with apps

It's so annoying that these things arent sorted out before release. It's hard enough me doing this never mind some poor sod who has no idea. I tried to discuss it with Netflix and it was like banging my head against the wall.
Not even too fussed about HDR just wanted 1080p! Have now installed the spoofed app and getting 720p which is better than nothing.
Amazon Prime Video still full of the jaggies

It should have an HDR display but apps may not have enabled HDR for the P20 Pro as it is new.

When you say you're seeing an HDR symbol on netflix, where are you seeing it - I've looked and can't see it in program description or when viewing an HDR program (such as Altered Carbon). I've tried Amazon Prime Video and Bosch shows the HDR symbol next to the program info but strangely Grand Tour doesn't so not sure what's going on there, but the fact that Bosch shows it implies that it is picking up it can render HDR (I've not tried it yet as gonna sit down and start Bosch tonight on the big screen - been waiting so long!!)

Yeah I also don't see any HDR info on Netflix and HDR shows certainly doesn't look HDR when they play. Maybe it's different firmware versions again?

I am running Netflix 6.0.0 and I see a HDR logo next to Altered Carbon.
I would post a screenshot but I can't upload any on this forum.

I just checked Netflix and Amazon prime and various shows that should be in HDR and there is no logo.
This might be the solution for Youtube (It has worked for mate 10 users):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-youtube-vanced-edition-t3758757

I am not even allowed to post a link so I can only describe what I am seeing.
Altered Carbon
98% Match 2018 16 1 Season HDR

It should show it while it's playing, I think?

Can't recored video in ultra wide with HDR10+ ?

Hi guys,
Today I tried my first video recording with the ultra wide lens.
When I got back home to check my video, I noticed the picture is many times closer than it should be, and very pixelated.
Here are screenshots to show what I mean:
When I'm close to the phone

When I'm far (shows the original wide angle)
I tried to take a video in my house and the same thing happens. It records perfectly wide but when I go into gallery to watch it, suddenly it's 5 times closer and all pixelated.
I think I found the issue, once I disabled the HDR10+ the problem goes away. But why?
Is this a software issue? Is my phone is bad? or just impossible to shoot properly with this mode on?
Edit: This seems to happen only in Full Screen ratio with HDR10+ enabled.
Is this normal?
Also how do you convert the HDR10+ to regular video? It says I can do it within the gallery but I see no option to do so.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks but that's not the issue. Please read the post again and check the photos uploaded.
Once I am close to the phone, it will go out of wide lens and pixelate everything as shown in first image.
When I move far from phone, it goes back to normal wide lens.
Not sure what is happening and why.

Green artifacts in camera recording

Hey guys,
I've got a problem with my camera. When I record with either the front facing or rear facing camera I get a load of green artifacts that get pissed all over the image as shown below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I've tried clearing data and cache from the camera app and that didn't work.
The recording looked fine on snapchat and messenger though, which confused me. I assumed this is because of the resolution the apps record in and so I've checked what resolutions I get the artifacts in.
Front camera looks fine at 720p and 1440p, but gets mad artifacts at 1080p.
Rear camera gets artifacts at 1080p (30 and 60fps), 30fps 1440p and 30fps 4k.
At 720p 30fps and 4k 60fps everything looks fine. Also, with the resolutions above the preview as I record gets all stuttery and seems unstable too.
I thought it might be a hardware fault with the rear camera, but the front camera has the same issue. Do they share something that could break both of them? Or is this some weird software glitch?
Thanks for any answers.

Sounds like a software related issue with the stock camera app.
Can you flash another firmware version. Hopefully an update is available for your device.

Thank you for your suggestion. I've re-flashed the phone (clean install using this guide) and the issue still persists - but it's nowhere near as bad as it was. I'll get a green flicker every couple of seconds rather than have a full-on simulation of the matrix. Seems like software had something to do with it, but there's something else afoot.
Edit: Seems to have gotten worse over more tests, I don't actually have a clue anymore.

Question Video camera cropped in on Android 12

Hi, I've run into another new issue with Android 12 and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing it. Inside the camera app, the video ends up seriously cropped compared to how it was on Android 11. Whereas before I could shoot indoor things (cat videos, etc) with the normal lens, now I'm having to go out to the ultrawide to fit things in frame. For now I'm getting around it by using a custom older version of Gcam, but I'd like to just use the normal app if possible. Is anyone else seeing this?
This is with the stock app:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Compared to how it was with Android 11 and on the custom Gcam app
As you can see, it's a significant amount of cropping. Both with the same standard stabilization enabled. (And pardon the messy desk)
I also tried installing the older 8.2 APK, but to no avail. It's older than the 8.3 that comes with the OS, so you can't go back further than that. And also my old technique for resigning apps to make the system think they're separate apps doesn't seem to be working, but if anyone could figure out a way to do that, I'm all ears.
It's normal. This how EIS works.

Did you even read? This is considerably more cropped than the same stabilization setting on Android 11. It turns it from perfectly usable to completely worthless. And if I'm recording 1080p60 or 4K, it's actually recording at less than full resolution and blowing it up, which looks terrible.
It is normal I think that is how it works.
I think I understand your question but I don't think I recorded any videos before upgrading to Android 12, so I don't have any comparison. I agree that the "1x" video on 12 has a narrower field of view than the equivalent "1x" still photo mode. Allso the video UI does not seem to have any option to disable image stabilization completely. I see that it offers .6x only for standard and cinematic pan. The other modes start at 1x or 2x, so I'm not even sure if the number always means the same sensor.
Yeah, I experienced the same issue, using exactly the same video camera settings the video on Android 12 has much narrower fov. I find it strange that no one is talking about this, maybe no one cares, but when making indoors videos it's a big deal since you have to switch to the wide angle lens, which gathers much less light.

The ultrawide camera also lacks autofocus, so if you're trying to film something close-up like a computer screen, it won't be in focus. This is definitely a major issue.
I just noticed that when you pull down the settings pane in the camera app, click "More settings", and scroll down, you can find a toggle to disable video stabilization. This gives a wider field of view and seems to show a similar lightly shaded on-screen control for stabilization. Trying to touch that control raises a hint to enable stabilization in the settings.
Are you sure that the Android 11 and custom app are enabled and not in this funny state with the partial shading of the control button?

Question Camera Problem with/without HDR

I have a big problem with the Camera in the new Oneplus 10 pro.
Big problems taking photos with both cameras, rear & front. The Display shows a very high brightness, I can´t see the Background, worst even when I am outside or behind me is more light.
If HDR is active, the result of the photo is OK (not every time!), but if HDR is not active, the photo shows the same like on the Display --> wrong brightness and no background.
With my Oneplus 6 i always take the photos without HDR, and on the Display and the result photo were always perfect.
Here an example. with the front camera, I made a screenshot of the screen, and the result photo is correct.
Selfie with a Window behind me. What I see on the Display: I dont see anything behind me

and the result photo if HDR is active:
one more.

But sometimes the photo is not correct and the same brightness like in Display

Some examples, just shoot it:
Camera Preview
I've got better results in HDR as without it.. About the view in the camera app, the first shoot taken inside, the same behaviour as yours, outside, I can't see any difference between HDR ON/OFF.
I think it's just an software / algorithm issue, which should be fixed with an update.

Thanks Adnan !!!
I am happy to hear that I am not the only one with this issue......
I don´t understand why it happens. With older Oneplus (6, 7) and iphones this doesn´t happend. And the preview on the Display is almost correct like the final photo.
I hope this will be fixed soon......
Sometimes it is horrible when taking a selfie outside, you never know how good/bad the photo (and background) is
something I don´t like......
I saw dozens of reviews of the oneplus 10 pro on YouTube.....
I have NEVER seen/viewed someone talking about this Problem.
Use the phone about 1 week plus..i just realised i got this problem too.
interesting....
i would like to know.... has someone NOT having this problem? can you please check your front camera?
with other phones the behaviour is correct and you see a right preview on the display!

to understand: result photo quality are OK. BUT, the problem is in the view on Display!
You can set exposure to be lower in pro mode etc. Okay with the settings.....
the main problem is with the front camera.....
pro mode is not available with the front camera
last update release didnt solve the problem with HDR with the front camera....
On 10 Pro camera is not good now. My favorite mod from 9 pro - xPan not working. On display i have a almost white image. Does not have 30 - 45 setting.

You can try version 3.3.8, it's very old but still functional, some stuff is missing like video recording in telephone lens I think, but it has build in qr code detection which for some reason got removed in later versions, you open Google lens by long pressing the view finder
Can you also bundle it as an regular APK for non rooted users like the 3.3.8 version?
I would prefer not to be rooted since I use it as a daily driver with banking apps and so on.
Or is it save to manually copy the files into the system folders from recovery? This should mess the signing key?
@SebastianWijatyk Thanks for the upload but it didn't worked on my system. The android version requierment is to high. Any idea where I can find a relatively recent OOS camera app compatible with Android 11? I have a Lineage OS fork btw.
Didn't work on my OP7pro running PixelPlusUI
Just tried on pixelexperience plus 12 on my 7T pro, unfortunately got same issues that dankovac1999 got on arrowOs... you can though register a video holding the shutter button in photo mode, and it's really interesting how u can switch between the sensors while recording... such a shame the app doesn't fully work for me
Doesn't entirely work for me either one Paranoid Android 12.1.
HDR doesn't seem to be functional on either photo or nightscape mode, and trying to switch to video recording crashes immediately.
@SebastianWijatyk could you possibly share a link to the telegram group that this was posted in, if it's public?

@SebastianWijatyk on which Telegram group could we find the person who developed this port ? Seems this is version 1.5, perhaps other higher version fixes the video mode and the other issues. KOSP is dead seems, thus does not worth moving to the ROM. Author is a guy calling himself "JohnsonRan".
I'm on Arrow 12.1 and some of the modes don't work, notably the main video mode.
Fully working on KOSP 2.4 (Android 12)
Hi, is this still active? If so, could you please look into the bugs, for example video mode on lineage doesn't work.
On YAAP-12-scirocco-20220830 the app crashes when pressing the 'video' tab.
All other modes work.
(No 960fps slomo option )
Just Flashed on my One Plus 7 Pro (Derp) apart from Video everything else is working
Selfie Camera Working Fine ... Everything Working... But Bro .. Using Poco F3 / Mi 11X .. Back Camera Take Good Picture but When Open it .. It Gets Blurred.. Like Captured With 2Mp Or VGA Cam.. Is There any Fix ??
I agree with @dr3am_r I would also like to know who port this camera apps. I'm stuck on the old 3.x version of the app and even thought it kind of work the quality it seems really bad in comparison some photos I took on the original app on the original oxygen os rom.
I wonder how you can port the actual one for android 11. This is the only drawback that I have about using a custom rom.
Also it worries me to use an app where I don't even know who modify it.
Thank you!!
This is happening here when I'm flashing the zip from magisk
