Hi all.
I just lost my iPhone 4S (bummer). and I need to replace it with something. I am considering the Note but had a question...
The speach to text feature was my favorite on my iPhone, I would do MMS, email or any other typing by simply speaking into the microphone. The phone would turn my voice into text and I could send it on it's way.
Does the Note have a good Speach to Text feature?
Try vlingo

I don't actually have the device yet, but I will keep that in mind when/if I do. Does that app compare to Siri favorably? Do you use it and do you like it? I just want to be able to create texts and email from voice. Not the commands but rather the actual text.
I am using TouchPal keyboard on my note I have found that it's got better voice recognition than Google itself
I have posted this using the voice recognition ...
........
but if you are looking for an app like Siri. ... I don't think you will find any. .....well there is iris but it's not good for sending sms or messages ...its just a chat bot.....
you can try vlingo like ketan said but Siri is way better and you will be disappointed
Thanks both of you.
I am not nuts over Siri.. most of it is fairly useless and stupid.. I just want to be able to dictate text into an mms or email, and it sounds like either of these two apps do it fine.
Though it was funny telling Siri to "Remind me to kill myself tomorrow at 9am"...
the following day I got an alert saying "Kill yourself in 15 minutes"... we laughed a bit at that... not really useful but kinda fun.
oh yeah...forgot to ask.
Does the note connect to the newer samsung smart TVs the way the tab 10 and 7 do?

I'm looking for a keyboard which supports both full line selection when highlighting and also uses Google voice recogniser? Otherwise I'm looking for a fix to tweak "Sywpe" so that it will use Google voice recogniser. Let me explain:
My preferred keyboard is "Swype" because it's the only keyboard I've ever been able to find on which, when highlighting/selecting text, it's possible to select full lines (up and down arrows) as well as character by character (left and right arrows).
However, because Swype is the Note's native keyboard, it defaults to Samsung's Vlingo voice recogniser and won't let me choose and use Google's.
Thus what I'm looking for is either an alternative keyboard which supports selecting text by line, not just character, and also uses Google voice recogniser, or else - and preferably - a hack for "Swype" that will allow it to use Google and not Vlingo.
Can anyone help at all?
Thanks.

Just select Google in Settings->Language and input->Voice recogniser instead of Vlingo. Then when you hit the microphone it will use that.

I'm afraid that's not the case. Swype defaults to Vlingo regardless of whether it or Google is the selected voice recogniser. That's the point of my problem; Swype doesn't seem to want to recognise Google, and I presume that this is because Samsung want you to use their keyboard and their voice recogniser.
Use the stock swype which comes with the stock rom on galaxy note and there u have that feature.

One of us is wrong here! I wouldn't for a moment suggest it were you, so I must have a flaw with my Note. It's rooted, but running the stock rom and indeed the stock Swype keyboard. However, regardless of whether I select Google or Vlingo, Swype always uses Vlingo. I have confirmed this by installing three alternative keyboards, all of which will use whichever of the two voice recognition options I pick. But Swype won't. If I could but find an alternative keyboard which supports highlight-selecting text by line, not just character by character, I would be very happy to dump Swype, use it, and solve the Vlingo/Google problem that way. But it seems that Swype is the only keyboard which supports line by line highlight-selecting.

Try SwiftKey, may be worth a go. There's a limited free version you can test before purchasing, very good keyboard and able to highlight lines of text.

Many thanks. I'm very encouraged when you say it's possible to highlight complete lines of text, but thus far I've not been able to work out how to select any text at all! Could this be a limitation of the free version, perhaps? It certainly allows Google voice recognition, so if I could crack the text-selection part I may have solved my problem (or rather you may have, many thanks). Could you be so kind as to let me know how you text in the full version? I fear it may not be possible in the free one.
The other thing I would ask is whether it's possible in the paid version (it isn't in the free one) to switch off all predictive text, auto-spelling, etc? I'm afraid I'm old-fashioned and don't like any kind of prediction or help with my typing!

To highlight text within the text input box, just press and hold on a word, the highlight will highlight a portion of text, then you can drag the marker to include any further text required. Just tested and works well. I have the tablet full version which is excellent.
As to options with predictive text, you can set it to only offer suggestions which pop up above the line and need to be selected (for accurate typers) or to auto correct which constantly changes input (for speedy typers). I'm like you and don't like too much input as I'm relatively accurate and find the foremost very usable, not too intrusive.

Thanks very much for the info. Ah, so text selection requires dragging the markers to where you want them. Swype's way is so much neater; you press "Highlight text" and then just move the left/right/up/down keys to select whatever characters, words or lines you want.
In other words, it's done entirely from the keyboard. I really am beginning to get the feeling that Swype is the only keyboard that does this. I've now tried A.I Keyboard, Perfect Keyboard, SWiftkey, Super Keyboard, TouchPal Keyboard, TSwipe-Pro, Big Buttons Keyboard and Ultra Keyboard, all of which allow selecting text by using the left and right arrows, but none the up and down arrows.
Can anyone suggest any other possibilities?
You can download the Swype beta and get Nuance voice input which is superior to Google's. The text you see here is dictated directly through Nuance.

I've played!
Unfortunately, this beta version doesn't seem to get on well with my Note at all. There are a number of small bugs which I could probably live with - and completely accept, knowing that this is only a beta - however there are two biggies. Firstly, the return key doesn't work!! And secondly it's not possible to switch off predictive text (I hate predictive text with a passion and simply can't use it). It's a great shame because Nuance voice that looks fantastic and works really well, but another bug I have is that you can't see the results of your dictation until you close the keyboard.
So unfortunately Swype Beta isn't the answer for me after all, therefore I'm still looking for an alternative keyboard, if anyone else can suggest any please?
Thanks.

Unfortunately I can't. Vlingo isn't there under settings/apps, at least not as "Vlingo" or "Samsung Vlingo". Either it's there under a completely different name or else it's cleverly embedded in the firmware and doesn't appear at all.

Deffo SwiftKey 4 with flow, it doesn't lag with the revolutionmod messaging app and the predictions are spot on. Also, flow works really well and it's really fast. I don't use flow alot but it's a nice feature to have to show off what Android can do when compared to iOS. I recommend SwiftKey, it's the number 1 paid app on Google Play for a reason: it's amazing.

Well, I've searched everywhere for any "solution" of this, and as far as I know it's system notification. In last versions we had to press on the input and then we selected which keyboard we wanted to use, in this version of Android supposedly its the way to change the keyboard we want. Yes its setted up as default keyboard. Swiftkey says its nothing with them, it's a Android System thing, so nothing to do.. lol

The same thing used to happen to me when I was using greenify, don't close the app with a task manager or anything else...keep it on ignore list. By the way, you should've tried the apk from the internet .
I'm typing this response on my phone and there is a keyboard notification in my notification bar. It does say select keyboard. Maybe the reason that it shows up in the notification bar is because you have a choice on what keyboard to choose.

Well, it depends on the Android version you're with. I'm with the original one without any ROM, so its the 4.0. If you're using any ROM with any different Android version, it might be because of that you wont get the notification...
Google Messages v--4.1.067 (Ettin_RC12_xxhdpi.arm64-v8a.phone) on Galaxy S10
When I open a chat with a person and tap on the "write a message" text box, instead of the text box coming up simply, the text box comes up AND it gives me the option tray of copy, paste, web search, etc. This is the thing you usually get if you double tap or press and hold. I'm getting it with a single tap and it's kinda annoying. Can anyone reproduce this? Any idea for a fix?
I have the same issue, pops up on both the stock messaging app AND google messages.
This is an issue with the March Security update or at least I hope it's an issue and not something new. I've made a post about it in the S10+ forum but haven't seen many responses to it. For me it happened every time I touched in a text field to bring up the keyboard. I know 2 other people that have the same issue after updating as well. I've rolled back to the February patch for now as it was pretty annoying for me.

Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one experiencing this. It is quite annoying.
So I've been digging into this a little and it appears to be a bug with Samsung's Clipboard History service. I can't figure out how to disable it. I tried disabling a few things using ADB with no luck. If you go into your clipboard history and "Delete All" it will no longer be an issue. I don't know if anyone knows how, but if there's a non-root method to remove Samsung's clipboard service it'll 'fix' the issue for now.

Yeah, I discovered this shortly after my post. I wasn't using the autofill service at first. But if you get rid of your password autofill service it'll go away lol. Does this happen any where else besides the message app? I was having this issue in any text field that required me to tap in it to bring up the keyboard. No I don't use Gboard. I just realized my phone sort of does this but I never knew it. The first thing I do when I get a phone is remove the Samsung dialer, messages, etc, and install Google Dialer and messenges. Up till I played around with it upon reading your post I never touched the message area before starting to type, I've never had to. For the heck of it this morning, I touched that area and the paste clipboard pop-up appeared. Like I said, I never see that because I just start typing and never saw it that way.
This has been from the first time I used the phone on the original software.

Hello Community,
I got a really annoying problem with using WhatsApp and hope you can help me out.
Like every time when I open an existing chat with someone to check newcoming messages my keyboard automatically pops up.
That would be no problem if the newcoming messages also scroll "up" but that doesn't happen and everything is "hide" behind the keyboard layout so I have only two options.. scroll down or close the keyboard layout by myself. Hoped it was just a software issue but there are no updates available atm
Does anyone face the same issue? Do you have any solution yet?
Btw I'm using the app SwiftKey keyboard app from microsoft but also tried other ones and all face the same issue....
Thank you in advance for your support and have a nice day.
Best regards.
Hi! Not having this problem. Also using SwiftKey, and phone is on version A20.
The keyboard pops up only if I click on the text bar. When I open an existing chat, the cursor is on the text bar already. I remember disabling gboard, spell checking, speech input... I don't know if they can cause your issues.
Also have SwiftKey and i can't replicate this problem. Did you already try deleting both apps/data (make chatbackups) and reinstalling them?
