Blueish screen?

I haven't received my Galaxy S yet but everytime I use my friend's I think the screen is just too blueish. Mostly the white parts. And I also think a "square field" is visible all over the screen. Is this because the resolution is too low compared to the size?
The phone itself is great so I still want it, but I'm afraid the screen will make me disapointed, especially since I've read so much about the Super AMOLED is so great.
Are all Galaxy S' screens like this?

What is the "square field"? please explain better.
And let's start from clearing the point of resolution/size-
800X480 is more than enough to go up to 7". If anything, it might be the pentile matrix that the screen uses.

You're probably right that it's more the pentile matrix I notice more than lack of resolution.
I cant understand why many reviews says this screen is very good when it's very noticable.

I've seen mentions of different Galaxy S phones having different colour temperatures, though mine seems fairly cool.
PenTile does, unfortunately, make text less sharp, and there is a bit of a screen-door effect (I think that's the term you're looking for). It's a tradeoff for having a Super AMOLED screen - excellent contrast and very bright, but not as good as a TFT for text. I've become accustomed to it though, despite my misgivings (but a non-PenTile SAMOLED really would be the best screen without question).

What's the good side with PenTile? And yes, I've searched for "screen-door effect" and it seems as if that is what I'm seeing.

Yes, Galaxy S display seems to have quite high colour temperature. You can sort of calibrate it using the calibration app that was developed for Nexus One a while ago and is now part of CM6, but you have to run Froyo, install it manually and lose video overlay, so it's not really usable right now. Nevertheless I've managed to calibrate my SGS to more or less 6500K using it.

What is the downside of losing video overlay?

Not being able to play back videos and shoot pictures and videos Or, to be precise - you can do all of that, but all you see is white screen

But since it can be done through software, does it mean that Samsung could make an update and fix this?

I had this on my old galaxy S and coming from the x10's tft it was painfully obvious the white colour had a blue/green tint to it. I then got it replaced and the tint was still there but not so obvious. Now after a while the white colour looks perfect white. I think my eyes have adjusted or something.

Ok, guess I'll have to wait until I get my before I know how bad it is.

My friend got a blueish Galaxy S I9000. Mine isnt that much!! Next to his looks like mine is Redish, but mine next to my Monitor looks blueish! I believe some Screens have more blue tint than others

Mine is very white. Put the phone on a white screen (using a screen torch app) and the screen looks whiter than a piece of white paper.

Hey all, keep us updated if there's any application that can change the color temperature without affecting the functionality.

I got the phone a few days ago and my friend's is defenitly more blueish than mine. I dont notice the screen-door effect anymore so I'm very very happy with it.

I´ve read something on a German Mobile Phone Review Site (don´t know the which one it was now) and they said, that this is normal, because of the AMOLED Tecnology. They said that the Colors will loose the intensity over the years and as blue is the most energetic Color in the spectrum it looses faster the intensity. That is why it looks now maybe a little bit diferent. After a while it should normalise, because it was planned by the manufactures.

Higher blue components of the display of the Galaxy S may have been deliberately created by Samsung with the idea that the blue OLEDs are aging much faster than green or red. After months of use should mitigate this effect and color balance to be balanced.

They could do that if they wanted to, yes. But don't expect them to do so, I don't think colour temperature is of any importance to them if it stays within usable range.

Got this tip a while ago on some other thread - you can start Video player, play some video, go to Settings and change the Colour tone to Warm. It stays changed even when you leave the player. It's not perfect, but it helps a bit.

Actually, YES! Your eye do adjust to the white that you are looking at.
You've been doing this all of your life and haven't noticed it. The light in the morning is a very different color than the light at noon. In the morning, it is likely very red if the weather is good, and very white at noon... yet everything looks normal to you... because your eyes adapt to the color.
Adjusting to your screen is the same way. But compare it side by side with another screen and one or the other is going to look "wrong", usually the one you haven't been staring at all day!

Congratulations, your brain has created a special filter, using a process called "adaption", by the human vision scientists, that blocks the screen-door effect. You didn't know it, but your brain created one years ago that blocked out the 'striped-lawn' effect caused by the columns of RGB subpixels on conventional color displays. That 'striped-lawn' effect was just as visible the first time you saw one, but that was likely many years ago.

Okay so this blue tint thing is somewhat strange, still no clear answers.
Some people are saying "this is normal for super amoleds." I have to disagree. If this was normal, then every single Super Amoled would have this blue tint. I've put my samsung galaxy s vibrant side by side next to the samsung galaxy s epic, fascinate, captivate and other vibrants. Some have a blue tint, and others don't. Others have nice rich whites, while some like mine have a blue tint.
Makes no sense, so I'm not buying the "all super amoleds have this blue tint" statement. They don't all have them!
I've used my phone for over 2 months now, and the blue tint is not fading at all. Something else people said. I don't plan to keep this phone for 10 years, waiting for the blue to fade, I want nice white now, not blue whites.
Anyone have any updates on this blue tint some galaxy s phones show?

Hi Guys,
After hearing so much problems with the Note screen, I had another good look of mine tonight and found these weird looking white lines/dots at the bottom left of my screen.
Are these dead pixels or stuff underneath the screen?
HELP Please.....might have to get an exchange with handtec...so much hassles....

You have taken a pic with the default scratch guard on just remove and slightly clean the screen and see if it goes away, but most probably its 2 dead pixels, mine 1st one had 1. Quality issues with samsung !

I'm pretty sure it's not between the screen and the default protector....where did you buy yours from?
Seriously...I'm very disappointed with Samsung now....I mean, I have heard many people having problems with their screens, but never thought I would get one of them defected ones....

Can you get a macro shot? It's kind of hard to tell without a closer view. When I've had stuck/dead pixels in the past, they've always been very discrete, tiny dots without any haze or blur, which it looks like yours has. I also wonder if it's something to do with the screen protection film. When you do a macro shot will you lift it and clean the screen?

Here....I have lifted up the screen protector....I didn't take off the screen protector was because maybe if I didn't handtec might exchange me the phone quicker....but what the heck...I need to be sure anyways...so here are the pictures.
Man.....so much trouble for this phone....very disappointed with the build quality of the screen now....
Now I will have to wait for a while to get my exchanged new phone ....
Any ideas how long it might take? I read on handtec that if the item is returned after 10 days...it will go under warranty and so does that mean they won't exchange my phone straight away??? Anyone got any experience with them??

nuh...I have tried to count them...there are a least 4 dots plus a line....very strange....they are also bright green instead of being white.....can't see them with the black background....
Shows you how bad of quality the phone I got....
I am very surprised I have not noticed them before.

Just found out online...there is a difference between stuck and dead pixels, and apparently stuck pixels can possibly be fixed yourself...might give it a try....

I think the pixels have gotten a bit darker......don't know if it's my eyes playing tricks on me or not....but will continue to flash the screen for the rest of the day and then check it again tonight....hopefully then will be gone

because every colour of the spectrum uses green except for red, blue and some combination of red blue
black is when the screen is off

Hi there. I just bought the Note few days ago and I can confirm that I have the EXACT problem as yours. Except mine is just a dot. It's like a pixel that seems to be the only brighter pixel when the screen displays full green, white or grey background (specifically used the LCD test *#0*# & Burn-In Tester Pro app).
I assume that it is a stuck or a hot pixel simply because.. it lights up. Unlike dead pixel is like.. a dead bulb/pixel (Assumptions. HEHE.)
Actually on the day that I bought the Galaxy Note, I was really careful. I even dialed the *#0*# LCD TEST at the shop to look out for screen defects. It was FLAWLESS. So I bought it. And I have this habit to look out for defects even after purchase, so I always go to the LCD Test and Burn-In Tester Pro app to check, and is still perfect.
Not until, last night, I dialed *#0*# and hit "Black (Vibrate)" with the intention to check for the "blemishes/blobs" in a totally dark room. It was only apparent after my eyes had adjusted to the darkness and I do see the not so obvious blobs. So after noticing that, it didn't bother me so I happily watched an Blu-Ray quality video (Despicable Me) and that's when I noticed the BRIGHT pixel which I assume it to be a STUCK/HOT pixel. I hope it is just a stuck pixel which hopefully can be fixed over time. Don't know about hot pixels..
Right now I'm playing a Full HD video of a downloaded YouTube video called Pixel Fix, on loop, with Video Brightness set to full. My instinct says to try it out but i do know that after awhile, since it's an AMOLED technology, colors could be darker over time as the pixels slowly 'burn-out'.
AND if it doesn't work, I might try to turn off the phone and leave it somewhere really cool/chilled. And switch it on after awhile when it reaches room temperature. I read it somewhere that it works to remove stuck pixels. They put their phones in a fridge in a wrapping and they said it worked. I forgot though where I read it from.

[Q] Yellowish screen?

Hi there,
The Galaxy Note is my first phone with a LED screen, I had a Desire HD before.
Since I got my Galaxy Note, the screen seems a bit yellowish to me.
When you tilt it a little bit to the side, you see the while colors becomes more white, but when you tilt it back, so the screen is right in front of you, then the white colors looks a bit yellowish again.
Is this normal for a LED screen?
I don't like the yellowish tint at all, but for the rest the screen looks amazing.

Hmm I don't really notice any sort of yellow tint on my screen but then again I'm not the most color observant person . What you can try is go int settings==>display==>screen mode and change it from standard to dynamic or movie. I have it on dynamic and love it.

Yea I already tried dynamic mode, it makes the yellowish tint a little less, but it's still there.
You can notice it by yourself by tilting the phone.
Just put something on your screen that has a white color, and watch the screen from the side, it looks much nicer then.

Ohyea, by the way.
You can also notice the yellowish very good if you put the screen mode on movie

Just got my Galaxy Note N7000 today and noticed the same issue on mine. Tilting the screen slightly makes the whites look pure white while in its normal position the screen looks kinda yellow. I am not being able to understand if this is a faulty set or not

SAMOLED screens are supposed to have superior viewing angles, it is believed that the Oleophobic coating is causing the green/blue/yellow tinting that you see when the phone is tilted ( well in your case its a direct view ) my first screen had absolutely no color shift even at the most extreme angles, the new one I have now has a blue tint unless directly viewed.
The norm is supposed to have great viewing angles and only shift in really extreme and non usable angles.

Well, you don't have to be upset like that.
What I'm trying to say is that if you tilt the phone, it has great colors.
But when you look straight onto the screen, you see a yellowish screen.
Your conclusion is that the viewing angle are very good, and only shift in really extreme and non usable angles.
Looking straight onto the screen should not be a non usable angle.
And Im not the only one who's saying it, but when you tilt the phone, the colors looks much nicer.

Im not upset, I just found it amusing why it was not understood right off the bat.
Have your screen/phone replaced, thats clearly a quality control issue.

But I just got it new, and more people are complaining about it (also some outside xda).
So I am wondering if it worths it to replace it, because it can happen again.

Thats something only you can decide, IMHO thats a hardware defect.

Actually I'm not a whiner, so I can live with the tint for 2 years, but still...
If I will be in the center of my city, I will ask the phone store what they think, and what they will do to solve it.

All upto you, I how ever prefer to enjoy my device as defect free as possible. Especially for this device that boasts a 'great screen' and the high price tag.

Still there are also some people that say it is normal.
I also got a friend, he's a designer, and works with photoshop etc, and colors are very important to him.
I also told him about this issue, he said it happens more with screen, and it is seen as normal for these screens where it appears with.

This is the reason why quality control is so random with samsung, people accepting defects as normal but dont let my expectations be yours as long as your happy with the device thats what is important.

He does have a point normally a screen comes in warm,cool and neutral depending on the factory calibration. These things can be normal as long as the user accepts them to be.

I've had four blue Galaxy Notes and one white and they all exhibit varying degrees of tint with some less noticeable than others. Some have a more warmish yellow tint while others are cooler with more of a blue tint. It was the same way on the Galaxy S2. The best you can hope for in getting a replacement is one that has a tint that's less noticeable or if you prefer a cooler tint to the warmer tint.

[Q] Anyone else have parts of their screen with red tint?

Here's an image of my first Nexus 6 (top) and the RMA replacement (bottom): http://i.imgur.com/wNbgFo1.jpg
As you can see, my first N6 had a pink tint across the whole screen which is why I initiated the RMA. While the replacement is better, there's still a red tint to the right half (bottom half in portrait). Actually looking at both, the reddest tints are in the right half.
I also have some bands that are dimmer than the rest of the screen which is very noticabke when scrolling but not so much if looking at a static picture.
It seems these really are using Note 3 Samsung AMOLED panels because the same complaints were posted on another thread last year.
Both devices were manufactured 11/12 if that makes any difference.
I'm just wondering how common of an issue this is. I don't think I'll RMA again for awhile as I'm just taking up devices that should be going towards fulfilling orders and my replacement is serviceable. But considering the price, I really expected better and I don't think I can stomach the flaw.

You answered your question (the very end statement). I can't really see what you're trying to show in the picture as everyone see's colors differently and not all phone displays/pc monitors are color calibrated in the same ways. GL finding the right display for your tastes. They all have compromises albeit some less than others

You don't have to have a calibrated screen to tell that the top screen is darker than the bottom screen. It's also not hard to tell that the left is lit brighter than the right on both. Whether you see pink or not may be arbitrary but that's why I put it in the description.
My original question of if anyone else is having that issue is not answered just because I found a thread on a year old phone that may or may not be using the same panel Would prefer if other owners chimed in so I don't waste my time RMAing if it's unavoidable.

I have the same problem, the upper part of the screen has a pink Tint and it's bugging the hell out of me, but since i've had my friend bring it with him while coming back from USA, i'm obligated to swallow up whatever defects i find in it

My mistake. In your picture it looks like the right side of both screens is a little darker than the left.
That said, and you don't have to answer these I'm just thinking out loud here, what were your camera settings when you took the picture? What camera did you use? What screen brightness was each display set to? Could the ambient lighting in the room have affected the photo results? Could there have been inconsistencies in the results caused by the angle of the photograph taken? Those are a few of the variables that I can think of that could skew what we're all looking at.

I used a Sony NEX-5R Mirrorless DSLR. I probably didn't use the best settings (automatic with manual focus) but I was kind of in a rush to get the old one out to UPS to get the CC hold for the new one to drop off. I didn't use any special lighting, just natural day time lighting. I think the pics are pretty representative of how tinted they were though because the old one was very red heavy everywhere. I should have taken additional pictures of the home screen to compare. On the default background, the new one looks turquoisish but the old one was dark blue.
Brightness was at 50% for both and I believe I had adaptive brightness turned off. Either way it was light up much brighter than I keep it at day to day (I usually have it at 25% at most with adaptive brightness on). If I had to compare the pictures to the actual devices I'd say the camera didn't pick up enough of the red tint. So in person, it's much more red and much more obvious.
But honestly, I don't care that much about the tint as much as I do the uniformity. I can live with an all yellow tint or an all red tint if it was consistent across the whole screen. I'm sure a custom kernel will come out at some point with gamma calibration so I can adjust as I please. But the way it is, the top half of the display looks brighter than the bottom half. The easiest way to see this is by setting the keyboard to Material Dark and putting the phone in landscape. The left side of the kb will look greenish grey and the right looks darker purpleish grey.
I've not heard anything about this issue. Maybe one or 2 posts on here and reddit regarding banding. Everyone else says their screens are perfect. I was hoping people would share their pictures so I can tell if I got 2 bad screens or if they're all like that and most people just don't care.

I probably didn't use the best settings (automatic with manual focus) but I was kind of in a rush to get the old one out to UPS to get the CC hold for the new one to drop off. I didn't use any special lighting, just natural day time lighting. I think the pics are pretty representative of how tinted they were though because the old one was very red heavy everywhere. I should have taken additional pictures of the home screen to compare. On the default background, the new one looks turquoisish but the old one was dark blue.
Brightness was at 50% for both and I believe I had adaptive brightness turned off. Either way it was light up much brighter than I keep it at day to day (I usually have it at 25% at most with adaptive brightness on). If I had to compare the pictures to the actual devices I'd say the camera didn't pick up enough of the red tint. So in person, it's much more red and much more obvious.
But honestly, I don't care that much about the tint as much as I do the uniformity. I can live with an all yellow tint or an all red tint if it was consistent across the whole screen. I'm sure a custom kernel will come out at some point with gamma calibration so I can adjust as I please. But the way it is, the top half of the display looks brighter than the bottom half. The easiest way to see this is by setting the keyboard to Material Dark and putting the phone in landscape. The left side of the kb will look greenish grey and the right looks darker purpleish grey.
I've not heard anything about this issue. Maybe one or 2 posts on here and reddit regarding banding. Everyone else says their screens are perfect. I was hoping people would share their pictures so I can tell if I got 2 bad screens or if they're all like that and most people just don't care.

I hear ya. The uniformity, or non, would bother me too

Welcome to the world of amoled. .lol The note 4 has same issue.Replaced 3 times still have pink/purple hue..If u test this image out with brightness turned down a bit you'll see darker area's on display that's causing the issue.

I can see the light / dark difference in the screen with that image, but it doesn't bother me across such a dark background because it still looks grey all over (just to different degrees). I actually find that it's much worse with light backgrounds because it doesn't look all white or light grey. The darker parts are always pinkish. It also doesn't help that Lollipop is all about white screens everywhere either
Also found out that I don't qualify for the extended holiday return, so I have until Friday to return it for a refund. I guess I'll be calling for device #3 earlier than expected and crossing my fingers.

My note 4 looks similar to ur replacement device, the first 2 were really bad,half of bottom was really pink,2nd one the top half was really pink..This one I'm learning to deal with,it just blew my mind last night while laying down in dark messing with wallpapers and noticed all the uneven darkness on dark grey image,dark area's and faint vertical lines everywere.It appears it's from uneven distribution of glue.

I dislike the warm color on mines. Nothing is perfect, there's always something to disliked

Just wanted to toss in my 2 cents. I have had two Nexus 6 devices now, both with discoloration. Both are from ATT. The first device was darker to lighter, from left to right. Current device is darker on top, and lighter on the bottom. It is really frustrating because I love the size, and the screen is great in terms of resolution.
I am thinking about taking this one back as well and returning it. I have never had problems on my smaller devices. It bugs the crap out of me that I can tell the difference, mainly on lighter backgrounds. I don't think I can live with this phone for a year. Waiting on the M8 GPE to get lollipop might be a better solution for me.

Do you recall what the build date for both phones were? Not sure if it matters but couldn't hurt to collect that info.
I just called for RMA #2. Hoping it's at least not worse than the one I have now. I think I'm in agreement with you regarding just returning it and waiting until next year, but I already gave the Nexus 5 to my wife so I'd be downgrading the Nexus 4 she had before that...ouch.

Assuming the date under the sequence number on the box is manufacture date, this one looks like 11/17/14. I didn't think to check out the original device build date, but it shipped 11/18/14 from ATT online and I received it 11/20/14.
I have had my current one now for a day, Moto and ATT claim devices shipping currently shouldn't have screen issues, although my issue is different than the screen not turning on, or flickering.
I was so ready for a big phone, I am still within my 14 day return period, and I'm wondering if I should try this again to see if I can get a good one.

Hi All,
I'm coming in late but I just got my Nexus 6 from AT&T last night. I've been using an N5 since may and haven't had any issues. I noticed this morning when opening Hangouts, Chrome or any other page that displays white as the background that on the top it has a more greenish hue and towards the bottom right it has a purplish hue. I thought it was my eyes at first because it's subtle but when I'm paying 700.00 for a device it better have a perfect screen. So I played around with the adaptive brightness, rotated it etc. It didn't look any less green to purplish. The bottom right side of the phone in portrait (to the right or the charging port in portrait at any given appropriate angle) had a more purplish hue than the top left (opposing the camera). I'll probably be going back to at&t tonight .. which sucks because I JUST got it set up how I liked it. I hate rooting anymore which is why I buy GPE devices. I could have gone with any other device and rooted and may have to get back into that game if this is how crappy this display is going to be. Also I might add that the encryption does slow the device down a little bit compared to the N5.

For mine (bought from tmo) the bottom is slightly darker than the top. I only noticed when looking hard for the "link" issue. Out of all the issues I could have had, I find this the least annoying of them.
Over all I'm happy.

I just got my Nexus 6 direct from Google (one of the lucky ones) and for the first time ever, a phone screen is really bugging me. There is a tint, darker from left to right. The most expensive Nexus I've ever bought (and I've bought them all) and the worst display. Very sad.
Here's some images, one with contrast as it was hard to photograph. Much more noticeable to the naked eye.
Does anyone NOT have this issue? If so I'd rather take the chance on replacing it.
Update: Returning it for a replacement. Google kindly gave me $10 credit for the troubles.

I received my replacement. The screen seems perfect. No gradient. There are definitely some defunct ones out there, beware. Mine is going back now. I hope you don't get it.

Weird smearing/band on the screen

So, today at night I noticed that when I'm in the camera in dark areas, or in Spotify with a dark background. I noticed that the screen in the middle from the notch till the chin has a lighter colour than the edges. The width of it is about half the screen centred in the middle. It's kinda like how Zack (jerryrigeverything) puts a lighter to the screen and the pixels turn white, but it's not that extreme. It's only noticeable in low brightness, and dark backgrounds, not black. The most noticeable was in video on the front camera. The "stain" has a lighter blueish tone to it.
I'll leave some pictures for you to test them. I know that when I checked on my phone again with light, the stain wasn't there. Test them in a low lit area, and lower the brightness almost to the lowest setting.

The second pic is the front camera (the most noticeable in person). On xda, I find Spotify to the most noticeable.

Maybe I'm blind but for me everything is ok. Maybe you have DC dimming on. Sometimes screen may look weird in dark areas with that option turned on.

Yes this must be due to DC dimming, called anti-flicker in the settings, shut that off and see if it gets better. If you want to show us how it looks you will have to take a photo of the screen with another camera since it doesn't show in a screenshot. That picture is captured before it is sent to the display. The "anti-flicker" setting is known to produce distortion at low light conditions.

Ok. I'll test it tonight. If I use another camera, it'll just blow the image or just won't show up.

I just checked settings, and I have that I had it switched off. I'll see if it makes a difference.

so ive tested it on and off. With dc on, it made worse. So i left it off. The picture ive taken (which was the best i could take) shows a green hue highlighted with the circle. I dont think its the screen protector as it only shows up on low brightness and dark colours, especially grey. Any ideas?
P.s. It looks a bit worse in person than in the pic.

That's a dark gray uniformity issue, it's fairly standard on oleds, especially low end ones such as this one. On mine the green tint is most prominent on the top right corner and gradually lessens to the opposite corner. There might be more uniform ones out there but they're like what, 1 in 10 units? If you say yours actually looks worse than in the photo you might have one of the worse ones, but if you can exchange this unit don't expect to get one that's significantly better. To get one that's surely better you have to go for the more expensive ones because those use newer generation panels so the uniformity issues only show at the darkest of grays and and the brighter parts will actually be brighter white which is correct, not green as is the case with the mi 9 panel(pre 2017 panel, samsung stopped having this issue on the s8).

Since I never saw this on a Mi9, not mine or any other, I don't think this is true in the case of the Samsung display used by Xiaomi on the Mi9.
The topic starter should contact the seller and get a replacement.

That’s entirely up to you! Can you disregard the distortion you will be ok, but if you find yourself constantly noticing it and being annoyed by it then it will be well worth the hassle I would guess. But only you know what’s right!

Have this on mine, ordered another one in hopes that I can get a better one but it was slightly worse, checked the one they had in a newly opened mi store, that one had it as well to a similar degree. Saying this doesn't happen on the mi 9 is bollocks, all of them have it to some extent, it's a question of how much you're willing to tolerate.
The best thing you can do IMO when you're in a pickle about returning something is do what I said I did: order another one but keep the first one around, compare and just keep the one you like more. That way you won't feel bad about returning the first one and being stuck with the 2nd or just being stuck with the 1st if you don't return at all. Obviously it all depends if you can fit all this into however much time you've got left to return, I was lucky to have 30 days.
