mine seems to work fine apart from on a night when it doesn't go dark enough.

New screen problem? Horizontal random black lines.

Just noted that I have maybe a defective screen (or GPU?).
Sometimes when using apps like XDA, browsing or apps with a lot of white background I noticed black lines (1pixel width).
When you holding in portrait mode their appear on the bottom side of he screen, and are horizontal. Always very fast, they appear and then go very fast. Sometimes its only one horizontal line, sometimes two.
When you hold in landscape mode they appear on the whole screen (vertical lines). It happened to me know two times while typing this post.
I'm full stock, not rooted. I have the power plug on and charging, maybe some power oscillation? Will see if happens without charger.

I thought I was going crazy when I noticed this! I legitimately see black lines down the screen for about a second just slightly out of my peripheral, and then they're gone.
Happens on xda and chrome, it's a known problem. Some people say other kernels help get rid of it. I think it's just a software bug.

Same issue here.

Haven't noticed that issue on my side

OK good I Thought I was going crazy. Other then that perfect nexus

I also noticed these kind of lines. It happened while watching some videos on YouTube. Also on XDA, portrait mode, on the upper side of the screen. Anyone has a software solution for this? I am just afraid not to get some permanent lines like this.

So... seems like that the problem appears for me only when I'm charging.
Anyone can confirm that the lines appears without charger plugged in?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, the lines appear without charging.

Happens to my Nexus 7 also. They appear very briefly, like for half a second. Usually in the bottom half of the screen (I can't even tell if it appears at the same spot - it appears so briefly, but I do think I have seen it once or twice in the upper half). I have seen it on xda app, Tapatalk app, and Chrome blank page. I think I may have seen it on the home screen also.
On my Tapatalk app I turned the background to dark gray and font to white, but I have still seen it 1-2 times, so it doesn't just happen with white backgrounds.
Don't know if its a software issue and can be fixed with updates or should I get it exchanged? It will be hard to make the store understand what the problem is since it is quite rare, happens to me only a couple of times a day or so (although I have been playing Angry Birds extensively recently to see if it app specific or not, and I have yet to see on Angry Birds - I actually have not seen it anywhere for the last couple of days since I started playing AB).
I only get them in the Tapatalk app. And it doesn't happen often enough to be annoying so I don't really care.
Here here!!
Had them on Tapatalk, dolphin browser and on Plume to name a few. Like others said though, they ain't frequent tto become a PITA but are still noticeable.

I swear these threads are going to appear every week talking about the same problems that have already been discussed many times over.
As said many times before, this is a common issue with tegra 3. The one x line flickering was fixed with an update.
Or you can download a custom kernel with an increased panel clock rate and be happy.
So anybody else have screen raise on the left or is it just me???? just messing.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Saw it on Angry Birds too. So its just not on xda or Tapatalk apps.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
A custom kernel does fix it. I had this problem until I flashed the motley kernel and it went away. Then I when I went to the paranoid android ROM I didn't know at the time but it changed my kernel back to stock... I didn't realize it had changed until I noticed the lines again. So far I have used the Trinity kernel and motely's and both have solved the screen tearing problem. If you don't want to flash a custom kernel I'm sure google will fix it in a future update. Thankfully its not a hardware problem.

Really happy that the problem can be fixed with a software update.

Screen tearing
Different from the backlight flicker, known issue, please vote :good:
I have this as well well as screen moving issue I'm going to buy a 16 gb version and send this back for refund. Hope they will do that I really don't need two Nexus 7 tablets

Yep, I've seen it happen with the xda app, and it looks like it flickers a line for a second and goes away.
i have this as well, a dark horizontal line appears in a flash of second at random time and place, i thot it is the flicker issue ppl talked about?
but i dont have the whole screen flicker tho i have tried google map zooming or panning with gps on and weak wifi signal and auto brightness off and 15%

It will come back... just watch a youtube video for example and it will be back.
If you are rooted install trickster mod, you will find a setting to disable the smart dimmer

Sorry what I meant was that my Nexus 7 for the past 3 months has been washed out it was experience ghosting which is a common problem but after I went to safe mode and rebooted the device I no longer have any issues. It is as if put into safe mode recalibrated the screen. If anyone is experiencing the problem I had try going to safe mode then turning the device of overnight. Let me know if this works because it had work for me.

[Q] Does anyone find the auto brightness function almost useless?

So I've had my Active for a week now, using the stock ROM and one of the things that's driving me a bit crazy is the auto brightness.
One minute it's almost overly bright, and then later it's too dim. I find myself tweaking it throughout the day so not to kill the battery (the other problem I'm having).
I was using an S2 for about a month sometime last year and remember the same kind of thing. Am I being picky here or is there a better way to control it?

I haven't had any problems with the auto brightness, it seems pretty responsive to me. Granted if I keep my screen on a lot it sucks the battery dry quickly, but the difference I find between min brightness all the time and auto brightness was really negligible even on days I kept the screen on for hours on end.
Battery life is somewhat of an issue I've noticed. On use heavy days my phone warns for low battery after some 8 hours, while on lazy weekends it has been well over a day at times... unfortunately that just seems to be the way it is for devices with these large screens.
im on my 2nd S4A now, my first one had auto brightness from hell... dont know what caused it, but it was extremely annoying.
I'm happy to report that I've started using Velis Auto Brightness and it's pretty damn good. An amazingly configurable piece of software.

its great that you found a fix! What I seem to notice is that the auto brightness is a lot dimmer when power saver is on and isn't too bad with it off.

Screen randomly getting dim

I have auto brightness off, auto adjust screen tone off and brightness set to max. My screen randomly dims and then gets bright again...anyone know what's causing this?
sEnt from thE noTe 3
Hmm is it this adapt display option maybe?
sEnt from thE noTe 3
Same here then I went into my settings to check the brightness (settings, display, brightness) and it said brightness decreased to prevent over heating or something like that ..check it next time you notice it dimming and see if it's the same thing ..pretty annoying

power saver uses the dimming option for low consumption of battery and make sure auto adjust is off in display settings

I'm willing to bet adapt display

Power saving isn't on. Adapt display didn't fix it either
sEnt from thE noTe 3
I have everything turned off also ..I checked in my settings every time my screen dimmed and every time the same message ..it was driving me nuts for days (still is)

I've had this happened to me also.
It seems to be more frequent when I'm using Chrome ( not stock browser ). It suddenly gets dim and then may or may not eventually brighten up again, it's pretty random
Also happens when I'm on the launcher but not as frequent
- Automatic Brightness / Off
- Screen Mode / Professional Photo
- Power saving mode / Off
- Auto adjust screen tone / Off
Is there something else I may be missing?
It happens to me while using the xda app. Annoying as hell. It has the same message as Melissa

Does anyone know if this processor does thermal throttling? That could possibly trigger a power save dim with overheating. If we get root this can be disabled using trickster mod.

The Otimus G Pro had a setting in the hidden menu to disable thermal throttling.

Thought this was an issue with my phone when I got it from AT&T yesterday. Glad to know it isn't just me. It seems to only have the issue when I am in a low-lite area (at least on mine) but when I am in an area with good lighting and the back light is 75% or more it doesn't dim nearly as much. Would be interested to see what a fix would be for this.

The service mode is brought up by typing *#0011# in the dialer on this phone but aside from that i havent had a chance to mess around in there. I do know that key imput 1 doesnt bring up the main menu anymore.

So I've been having this issue and noticed it like two days ago, and reading all your responses I looked through and noticed I had one of the features that I thought I turned off. Smart Stay says that it starts to turn the screen off when we look away maybe it's a buggy feature (one I never intended to use but it might be the one doing this dimming thing (being one of the first steps to turn off the screen)

Slow auto brightness

Hi,
Nexus 6 is very slow to adjust the brightness automatically. It takes several seconds to light up the display if I move from inside to outside. My Lumia 950XL is much faster. Is possible to improve it?
No one?

I think you will find most people turn it off. Auto brightness has never been very fast and half the time is more of a hassle. I am sure if you look over the AOSP code you can adjust it.
