Download gamebooster 2 from Google play, seriously just do it. Nova 3 was running terribly so I installed this and enabled ultra gaming mode, what a difference! It seems the phone is badly optimized for some games, this app helps a bunch

not so sure about this..
#FAQ
Q: How does this app work?
A: It kills useless running apps and free up memory before launching your game, so your game will run more smoothly.
can do this with a taskmanager, cant i?
and only should make a difference when you forgot to close some memory-consuming apps that still run in the background...
if you close apps with the "back"-key and not just background it with the "home"-key, then you shouldnt really notice a difference.

I forgot to mention also force all cores online. Trust me there's a difference, what's the obsession with task killers? The apps just restart again claiming more of your memory. The difference with a root app like this is the ram component actually alters the out of memory values in the system. Standard task killers are a waste of space in my opinion, especially on apps with background services. The optimus 4x is badly optimized for games and whatever this does it works, gonna test on Spiderman and post my results

Oh and read the description: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...tm_medium=organic&utm_term=gamebooster+2+play that's more than just killing tasks.
Edit: Not much difference on Spiderman, that one needs fixed

i am used to change the governor to "performance" even on my pc, when i play games that put my system to the limit, so i do that on my phone, too
i use "CPU Master free" for that, works like a charm.
maybe i'd use this app with a lower specs phone, but atm there are plenty of games out there i can play perfectly fine, in fact i didnt find a game thats lagging at all, be it vice city, horn or order and chaos.
well if i experience a situation where i need even more cpu cycles, i will give this a try.
but 2€ is too much at the moment for an app i dont need.

I was reluctant to believe that it was laggy. Since it uses the same chipset as the nexus 4 or a better version. How is the heavy games performing? I know there plenty of videos regarding gaming reviews. But I just want a views from a user of xperia zr. Since its a little on the costly side for me and want to make sure it's worth it.
not so laggy . my zr is smooth when running apps . a little bit laggy when play heavy games ,but not so obvious . this is a great phone with a little cost :fingers-crossed:

You mean the Game lags are not much noticeable? I would be installing Asphalt 7, if I get this phone. How would xperia zr stand up to nexus 4 in performance section?
Mine is laggy, not all the time but if you keep screen on for about 10 minutes and launching apps after apps, it gets really laggy especially on Chrome. I even have display issues where black screen are displayed on certain apps for awhile before showing up. Not sure if it's because I have too many sync data and background apps going on but I don't understand how anyone can use a smartphone these days without a minimum of such things going on

That sounds quite bad, mine definitely does not do that. However, I have to say Chrome is laggy on any kind of phone, I would never use it, especially because of that. I use Dolphin these days.
It will drop frames in heavy gaming because of overheat. it works well in gaming as long as you can keep it cool.
there is not lag in daily uses.
even Asphalt 8 can run smoothly on XZR
Well the phone is kinda brand new so.. in this price range its expected to be smooth and fast no doubt about it. The 2 gigs and 1.5 quad boy do the job.Have the phone from more than a month and I can tell you if u have the money go for it. the heating is abit ****ty when you play heavy games more than 30 min but every smatphone heats so..its not a big deal

I have been using my zr for about two months. Lag is virtually non existent. I am happy with the performance. Dead trigger plays very well. Only problems are heating during heavy gameplay like deadtrigger or using chrome and those flaps covering headphone jack and usb port.

I think it's just some games that just resource hogging and seems to cause those delay and black screens.
Sony roms are the most laggy roms ever (Specially if you have many background app running!) So expect some lag when connecting to internet
Not laggy. try factory reset.
Guys,
I need your opinion on something. I have this annoying thing that given my slight OCD is going to drive me crazy. It's this: scrolling in any app (main culprits are Facebook and Youtube) is simply not as smooth as on my OnePlus One. It has this stuttering effect which is not super obvious at first, but when the phones are next to each other the difference is highly noticeable.
What is your experience with scrolling in apps? Is it smooth as butter or do you also notice some stutter? Could I have a dud device? Anyway to find out?
Scrolling seems fine to me, but I'm not comparing it with something else side by side, and have no ocd...

I have ocd too and im very sensitive to lag and choppy scrolling. Completely agree. I have the oneplus one as well. Note 5 is faster everywhere but scrolling is not that smooth. YouTube is really choppy compared to other phones. My oneplus one's screen is much less responsive though. input lag everywhere so I would rather have the note 5's choppy scrolling instead.

It's just bizarre really. This thing absolutely flies, it has power to spare, multitasking, Youtube, gaming ... but certain things are just not smooth.
Things I notice that bother me:
Scrolling in apps... Main culprits Youtube and Facebook
Pulling down notification shade... A subtle stutter
Scrolling through a long list op open apps... A small stutter in the beginning
It's small things, but it seems to have issues with refreshing graphics somehow. I don't know, I'm not knowledgeable enough. Unfortunately there is no root available yet for my model (N9200) so all I can do is wait I guess,

I have noticed all those except for the notification shade. I disabled a bunch of apps of course, including that Quick connect and the other thing that was up there all the time, so maybe that helped. I am seeing a ton of improvements in scrolling with all the apps I have disabled but not to where I would call it super smooth. For some reason scrolling in the browser is pretty smooth which is usually the place i see problems on other phones. It must have something to do with how touchwiz handles scrolling cache. If someone comes up with a mod to adjust it, that may almost be a big enough reason for me to root my phone.

Thanks. Yeah, I've done the same (disabling apps etc...). It definitely not bad, but it's not as smooth as other Android phones I've used. Fast yes, perfectly smooth, no.
Updates seem to come quickly. I've had 2 already in 2 weeks. let's see. And with Android M around the corner, I'm sure in a few weeks/months things will be perfect.
Samsung have anyways had this issue with their phones. Never been butter smooth due to bloat ware mainly. No matter the specs phone lags and stutters, I think Samsung should ditch TW.
Note 5 is a fantastic looking phone but ui is concerning.

One thing I found works is to install Adguard (not in store, just google it). It will block ads and make scrolling in Chrome a lot better. The only annoying part I would say is a persistent VPN notification. Adguard uses a local VPN which results in a permanent notification. If you can live with that I found it to be pretty great.

I thought it was just in my head but I gave adguard a try after some time of not using it and I thought it made the whole system faster. Still not 100% sure but things could be a tad smoother and more responsive in general. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth having it constantly running in the background and using chrome or just using lightning browser with its ad blocker built in.

My AT&T version has no issue in scrolling - either in the UI or individual apps I use. I'll get some lag when scrolling fast in the Gallery or FlickFolio but that's because I'm scrolling faster than the thumbnails can load. That's an OS thing, not a h/w or UI thing. Overall the diet Samsung put TW and their own apps on has really paid off.
I'm starting to believe it has something to do with the last "performance increasing update " . I can see from other threads on here that not everyone is on it yet. I received it mid last week. I had another Note 5 before which I returned as it had an issue with the Screen. That one never got upgraded to that stage and was very smooth. This one I have now felt smooth as well, but think that it got worse with the upgrade. I'm now on the update captured in the screenshot. It ends in AHO4. The one before was AHO2.
Once I've figured out how to flash that version on there using Odin3, I will give that a shot and turn off automatic updates. To be continued...

Discolourization.
Settings > Developer Options.
Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, Animator duration scale. Change all to "off". Has always seemed to speed up any Android device I've ever used.
Looks like it is being released to reviewers first then to us. I'm excited to see what other tweaks are included and how it performs after that update. Although my screen seems perfect and I've changed my ram limit to use all 6gb, it will be interesting to see how the world reacts.
http://www.neowin.net/news/oneplus-...xed-in-upcoming-update-reviewers-get-it-first
Maybe a reviewer could give us that update file even sooner ?
I hope that both are only options in developer section. I have no interest in a RAM fix right now.

Nobody has demonstrated that. I'm willing to bet that it conserves battery life because fetching an app from RAM is far more efficient than having to reload apps all the time.
Yesterday, with the ram fix, I got over 5h SOT with heavy multitasking. If that's the battery being impacted, then I'll take it :good:

Don't worry, no offence taken. A regular day would look like this:
phone, hangouts, chrome, inbox, whatsapp, camera, spotify - sorry, that's already 7, but I don't use the camera nor spotify (only in the gym) everyday. Most used apps are hangouts, chrome and inbox. I'm a pretty boring user but use my phone a lot.

Ah, I can see why the 6gb wouldn't be that important.
Do know that chrome uses a lot of ram! Every tab is an app. So 7 tabs is 7 apps
I've never been able to max out 3GBs of RAM much less 4 even with a 64bit Android OS. OnePlus added 6GB of RAM and USB C solely for the bragging rights, which explains why neither are implemented properly. I would have bought the OP3 if it didn't have either of them.

I'm all for updates, and glad they're pushing them out quickly. Honestly though I'm perfectly content with the current version. I think the screen looks great, I don't notice any over saturation. And while I guess putting more of the RAM to use would be a welcome thing, I have yet to experience any kind of slowdown at all. I guess I'm kind of like Derdjango in that I use my phone all the time, but only a select few apps. Maybe closer to 10-12 depending on the day though.
Battery should be more efficient with multitasking, and a camera upgrade is badly needed as sometimes camera got buggy and stucks while clicking the pics.

I can see why people are calling USB C and 6 gb ram as a gimmick but if it's giving me a future proof phone, I will take it. 2 years back 2 gb ram was more than enough and today 3 gb is considered as a baseline. With 6 gb ram at least I will have options to keep this phone for few years even if it fails to manage RAM properly. We all came to XDA to learn how to tweak with our devices after all and it would be better to respect OP's decision of how to manage their OS and take the tinkering in our own hands.

Here is a screenshot where you can see only 1Gb unused out of 6Gb. 5Gb used for system, apps and cache. There are a lot of apps opened/cached (nothing crazy). Only 1 game in memory (candycrush).
The other screenshot shows battery life under this load. I must say, I'm quite surprised.
I think many people complain because they were hoping that less memory would've made phone cheaper, but I doubt that there would be much difference in price. I like 6Gb for the future proof as mentioned earlier. It can be used right now with build.prop fix or upcoming OTA. I hope that Google builds system that can even better utilize it in the future.
Can't believe how bad the performance is when playing games, even ones that aren't as graphically intensive like Galaxy of Heroes. I had the S8+ for 5 months and never had issues with performance. Also, I've tried running the phone in different performance modes including "Game Mode" and it doesn't make a difference.

My Note 8 has been chewing up and spitting out everything I've thrown at it. No lag or stutter and doesn't even get warm. At max resolution and "optimized mode"
I too am having lag on galaxy of heroes, I haven't tried other games but I was surprised.
Wonder if it's just this game? The rest of the phone performance is second to none I'm very impressed. I am worried though because I play GoH quite a bit and will become annoyed almost certainly
Wonder if it's specific to this game for now. Maybe a software patch will fix?

When I compare pokemon go to a v20 and a pixel so. The game lags really bad and it's well documented that the game lags. Them when I play out on my note 8. There is no lag just smooth transition from the going I to battle or gyms or poke stops. I tried that star wars game and had no lag and even recorded a video. Did that fix your issues with lag?

Sure did.
I had issues with lag and stuttering and other oddities. Factory reset and it is smooth.
My lag is actually worse when I am playing galaxy of heroes after factory reset. I haven't played other games so I'm not sure if this is still isolated to GoH but I did run Epic citadel benchmark and it was really smooth, not a single hitch. I think this is specific to the game.
Interestingly, I did use game mode to turn on battery saver performance and improved my lag. Not sure what that is all about.

Careful using that analogy "Butter Smooth" someone may call you "Ignorant" as I was in another post.

I'm not the one who said that but to be fair, the discussion was about scrolling, not game play. This phone may handle games better but the scrolling smoothness is not perfect. On performance mode, I'd say it's damned close to perfect. Still a hiccup there or there but not many. Without performance mode, it was far too frequent for my liking.
